Server :: Setup Home - DSL - Netgear Router - DNS - Bind - For Use With Qmail On Cent-OS 5.3

Apr 30, 2010

I would like to setup a qmail server for learning purposes (if you strongly feel Postfix is better, feel free to let me know). When I started setting up qmail (using Life with qmail), it suggested that having a DNS is the best approach. In the spirit of learning, I decided then to create another server for DNS only, and use that for qmail.

My problem is that, as this is a home installation, the internet is behind a Netgear DG834Gv5 router, on a DSL line that has a dynamic IP address. I am using DynDNS, but also don't mind having to update any DNS entries to keep up with the change, this is not exactly a production-grade setup.

In addition, I also have access to another DNS server where I can create authoritive entries for any domain I register. I have done that for a domain, and would like to point part of that to my home DNS so that I can learn.

So essentially, I would like to have a new zone for home.mydomain.org on my home DNS so that I can create new entries for *.home.mydomain.org such as qmail.home.mydomain.org etc. there.

I assume that this would include port forwarding on the router which is not a problem, but I truly have no clue where to start. I have a very basic install of Cent-OS 5.3 (no X and just Base a few admin and dev tools) and just installed the latest RPM of bind (9.3.x).

General :: Setup BIND Server For Home Network?

Aug 26, 2009

It it possible to setup a bind server for my internal network at home? Currently, all clients DNS requests go to my Verizon FIOS router, which also acts as a DHCP server. I would like to setup a another DNS server using BIND for studing.

Current setup:

Client --> Router (DNS Server) --> Internet

New BIND server setup:

Client --> BIND Server (2nd DNS) --> Router (Primary DNS) --> Internet

How would I go ab this? Would I have to configure a cache naming DNS server?

Server :: Setup Home (1 Computer) FTP Server Using DSL Connection No Router?

Jan 21, 2010

I'm going to start a new thread because previous searches have not totally satisfied my question. I've read all day about doing this but each inquiry leads to discussion of configuring the router. I am also not network savy. I would like to set up an FTP server on my home computer (presently Ubuntu 8.10). I have only one computer. I am using DSL with my telephone line for internet connection. I do not use a router.

Is it possible to do this with no router and only a DSL ISP connection?

Ubuntu :: Logging Into Netgear Router Setup After Passphrase Change?

Jun 29, 2010

I changed the passphrase in my Netgear WNR3500 router. I got the teenager's win7 netbook back online (wireless) no prob by simply changing the security key in windoze and it didn't effect my connectivity but when I attempt to enter my router setup by entering my local IP nothing happens, no response at all. I've rebooted twice and my connection is still very solid but I cannot access the router setup. The ONLY change I made was in the router's "passphrase".Not a big emergency at this point I suppose but I need to know what I need to change in Linux? Or to rephrase, in windoze7 passphrase=security key. In Linux?I can just reset the silly thing I guess but was kind of hoping I wouldn't have to and besides I anticipate the same trouble when setting the passphrase afterward.

Networking :: Setting Up Linux Box As IPv6 Router To Replace Netgear WNR1000 Wireless Router?

Jun 18, 2011

I want to set up a Linux box as a wireless router to replace our existing Netgear WNR1000 router, as I believe the Netgear does not support the coming IPv6 protocol. Unfortunately, it is not flashable with OpenWRT or DD-WRT presently.

As we have Comcast, our cable modem acts as a dumb modem according to the customer support guy I talked to, and our router is the one that asks for the IP address from DHCP. Thus, when Comcast switches over to IPv6, I don't believe my existing router would work, correct?

My idea is to take a Linux box and put two NICs and a wireless adapter in it, using IPCop or Smoothwall to set up a router. I could then enable IPv6 support for when we have IPv6 with Comcast. Is that possible? Would there be a way to get BIND to hand out private IP addresses in the same subnet on the both the LAN NIC and the wireless card?

Server :: Setup Bind 9 To Support Web And Mail?

Mar 13, 2010

I am working on setting up a bind 9 nameserver that will be responsible for serving up DNS records for my internal network and publicly for my web server. My configuration is below:

Firewall Gateway (Ubuntu Server 9.10) ---> switch ---> internal servers (ubuntu server 9.10 and mac os x server)

The internal servers are all on the same subnet, so DNS, web and mail will all be on the same subnet of private IPs. Each internal server is mapped with SNAT to a public IP address. And the DNS server only has port 53 forwarded to it.I am trying to figure out the best way to set up my nameserver so that it can provide records for my internal servers based on private IP addresses, and then provide records to the public for my internal servers based on their public IP addresses. I had a few questions on this:

1) Is this the correct way to think about my setup, or is this typically done in another way?

2) Does anyone have recommendations on the specific configuration I should follow?

3) Are there specific references I should look into as well?

Ubuntu Networking :: Setup Server As Router / Gateway?

I am not an expert at linux by any means but I can usually figure stuff out. I believe I need iptables, bind, and a few others probally. It eventually will also be a samba server but I have done a little with samba before. I do have 2 network cards, my router at the moment is starting to die and would love to have a more powerful router. I would also like to figure out how to do port forwarding in the router, as well as be able to see the load on the network cards. Maybe there is a program to show usage by user? As well as be able to do packet pritorization.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting To Router - Netgear DG834 - Connection Often Being Dropped

Jul 12, 2010

I have a Netgear DG834 ADSL router (v3) which I have used for a couple of years. Prior to that I had a v2 of the same router, but upgraded for the one that supports ADSL 2+ (here in the UK).

Recently I have been having problems with the connection often being dropped, and when I access 192.168.0.1 for the router admin page, when it is not working I get no IP address listed for that of the ISP's server, and sometimes as well the upstream and downstream speeds are listed as 0 kbps.

Usually this was resolved by rebooting the router.

However, for the last couple of days, when using Ubuntu 9.04, the page of the router at 192.168.0.1 will not load. I have tried numerous different browsers, and none of them will give the router admin page.

When I tried booting from a live CD of Fedora 13, the router admin page came up just fine, no problems (although still not getting a proper connection to the Internet).

I was going to try to use the older router I had, but so far, as I cannot access the router admin page in Ubuntu, I have not done so (not had the time, and now I am at work posting this).

So there must be a problem in Ubuntu that is preventing it showing the router's admin page. The Network connection details show that the router has given the PC an IP address of 192.168.0.6 and the DNS servers are listed, so I know that Ubuntu is talking to the router, but it is not allowing me to access its settings in any way.
