Ubuntu Networking :: Error Connecting To Wireless Via Command Line

Apr 6, 2011

I've been familiarizing myself with the command line and am attempting to connect to a wireless network but am getting stuck at the point wherein I need to put in a password. When I run iwconfig I see my card is wlan0.I definitely know my password as I can connect using a GUI. The encryption method for my network is WPA2.Could someone tell me how I could connect to a WPA2 secured network via a command line, and/or where I went wrong with what I've been trying?

Ubuntu Networking :: Pppoe Over Wireless Network?

Dec 3, 2010

I use pppoe connection over wireless network, for long time I've used console, so I didn't had any problem with it, BUT - after installing gnome, I can't connect to the wireless ISP. On my network manager I see my wireless network, I can connected to it, but when I do it, I don't see DSL connection on my menu, If I only connect cable to it, DSL connection is showing again. What should I do to see the DSL connection when only wireless is connected ?

Ubuntu Networking :: How To Setup PPPOE Connection Over Wireless

Apr 22, 2010

My adsl modem is in bridge mode. I can connect to internet via pppoe . pppoeconf recognise the pppoe in eth0 and setup a connection and I can use it. How can I setup a pppoe connection using pppoeconf so that it uses wireless ? I set the wireless mode to bridge in modem settings. But, after that the access point stopped appearing in "aps in range" in network manager and I can't connect to it. pppoeconf also doesn't recognise wlan0 as a valid pppoe link . but dat is normal since i don't think it can check if wlan0 is pppoe without wlan0 being connected to the modem's wireless network. How can I connect to Internet with modem in bridge mode and connections via wireless interface of modem? Is pppoe over wireless even possible ? coz the datalink layer of wlan is not ethernet rite?

Ubuntu Networking :: Uses PPPoE To Configure A Connection To Their Wireless Broadband?

Jun 26, 2010

I am deployed to Iraq and the Earthlink ISP here uses PPPoE to configure a connection to their wireless broadband. His english skills are pretty good and from what I gather, he's got a DSL connection that he's trying to connect me to. He showed me how he does it on a Windows machine but I can't figure it out on my ubuntu laptop. That windows machine didn't need any IP addresses or server names. It only used a username and password to connect. Of course a strong wireless signal detected was also pre-requisite.

I know my laptop works because I've had great success with it here lately, just not on the Earthlink service.I see their wireless is broadcast and I can connect to it. I just can't figure out how to post my credentials and authenticate.I don't see a way of entering my username and password because I don't know how to install (or configure) for PPPoE.I did use the pppoeconfig and got to the part where I add my username and password, but most of what's going on up to and after that, I do not have the knowledge base to use. So I figured that allowing the defaults and recommended settings would be acceptableYou'll have to forgive me if I've asked another dumb question here. I'm another one of those Linux enthusiasts who is learning and I'm just not willing to switch back to MS just to get internet while deployed.

Slackware :: Slowly Connecting To The Internet Using PPPoE?

Jun 25, 2010

i run into a very annoying thing, usually take less than a second to connect to the internet using pppoe-start but today after a new installation of slackware 13.1 take a couple of secs to connect.

now:
# pppoe-start
Connected!
usually:
# pppoe-start
. Connected!

i'm using kernel-generic-smp-2.6.33.4, i even rebuilt the rp-pppoe package but it's the same thing. same behaviour was also in the previous release using kernel 2.6.29.6 due the broken forcedeth in that version of kernel, but on ArchLinux using the same version of kernel works normally.

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04 - Eth0 Not Up After Pppoeconf

Jun 15, 2010

I recently installed Lucid 10.04 on a P-IV desktop. The install went extremely smooth and Ubuntu was up and running. Hats off to the Ubuntu folks for the excellent user-friendly experience in the installation process. However , I have run into a networking issue. I connected my PC to the router issued by my ISP. This is a plug-n-play type of connection where the username/password settings are stored in the router and there is no configuration required in Ubuntu for accessing the internet. All I need to do is connect the router and my PC using the LAN cable. I was able to surf the net without any issues.

A few days later , this ISP service was down and hence I switched to another wired ISP. This ISP required me to dial a connection using another supplied router. I setup the connection using pppoeconf where I was asked to enter username/password. Again I was able to surf the internet without any issues. Next , I shutdown the system and before booting it , I switch back to my original ISP connection (the plug-n-play one). But now I am not able to connect to the internet. The router lights show that my PC is connected to it , but when I issue ping 192.168.1.1 to check connectivity with the router configuration, I get

Code:
$ ping 192.168.1.1
connect : Network is unreachable.
Also , issuing ifconfig does not show eth0.
NM-applet also does not appear in my notification panel at the top.
How I can go back to using my original plug-n-play ISP connection? I have read some posts about networking issues , but none quite like this one. Please note that all my Internet connections are Wired connections.

Here is my interfaces file
Code:
$ cat /etc/network/interfaces
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
iface dsl-provider inet ppp
pre-up /sbin/ifconfig eth0 up # line maintained by pppoeconf
provider dsl-provider
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet manual

Ubuntu Networking :: Wired Connection Works But Only By Pppoeconf

Jan 3, 2010

It's been a while since i've been trying to deal with this problem but it was useless. I've found many related problems to this, most unsolved and those who had solution wouldn't work for me. I have few mates who have the same problem and still didn't find a solution as well. Here's the problem:

Both on my Desktop and Laptop, the network manager won't recognize that there is a cable pluged on the computer so that it would start my connection. The solution to make it work is pretty simple and its everywhere: use pppoeconf.

Altough that does the trick to make my internet work, i get another problem that i found out to be related to this one, which is: I can't use VPN. Which make me assume that one problem is related to the other, is that on my laptop, which has wireless internet, ubuntu will recognize it and then i can simple use vpn. My desktop, on the other hand, isn't that lucky and does not have wireless, so i can't just use vpn. So far, i've been using vpn on windows when needed, but switching systems is really a pain, not to say i'd rather do that on ubuntu.

Few other suggested solutions were to use 'wicd' and other network managers, altough for some people that did work accoding to what i saw on boards, that didn't really work out for me as well. Wicd coldn't recognize it either. Other suggestion was to check on some txt file on ubuntu, erase few information and let it 'fill up' automatic, it didn't work as well(sorry i don't remember all details on this one).

This problem happened on:
First, wubi for ubuntu 9.04
Ubuntu 9.04(normal install.)
Ubuntu 9.10
Happened both on my Desktop and my notebook, but the same version i installed on both of them were used on other computers and they did work on them so i strongly believe it has to do with the os itself.

Ubuntu Networking :: Not Connecting To Wireless

Mar 28, 2010

I recently installed the latest version of Kubuntu in a dual boot system with Windows XP on a Dell laptop. The dell laptop has a broadcom wireless device, and I was able to set up the driver and get wireless working. Then I booted into windows XP to make a whole bunch of updates/driver installations, and when I booted back into Kubuntu it would not connect to the wireless network. I am pretty sure the device is still active, because it picks up on the wireless networks in the area. But KWallet does not open to ask for my password on booting. Something is not set right, but I can't tell what.

Ubuntu Networking :: IBurst Modem Driver & 10.04 LTS LL Pppoeconf Required After Reboot?

Nov 9, 2010

I'm a Linux noob an I am really desperate for some top, top, top assistance. Been battling a while now with my iBurst USB modem driver and hope there is someone out there that can help? I have been through umpteen forums and threads and tried literally everything I read, but to no avail. I also realize there aren't many Ubuntu users that use the iBurst modem, but I am appealing to the few out there that do.

I have installed the open source ibriver-2.6.31 for my iBurst USB modem. Initially all went well with fast connection etc., connection everytime I boot, until... I started updates of 10.04 LTS, that is when I became aware, from the forums, that a re-install of the driver is required after every package update due to no "package management" in the iBdriver. what a pain in the proverbial to say the least!

Anyways.. now I am the stage where the driver is always installed, but...all of a sudden, I need to run pppoeconf and set up the driver after each boot to get connected!!!! If I can't find a solution it will force me back to Windoze7 which I dread to do! Can a script be written to pppoeconf (rp-pppoeconf.iso is loaded I think) automatically during boot perhaps?

So any top Linux hacker or "notsonoobasIam" user out there with a iBurst modem and similar pains & mis-fortunate experience please share your ideas and thoughts to correct this problem permanently for me please? (I should maybe mention that the other day I performed the "Grub2 Profile" exercise to try and speed up the boot time, this does not perhaps have something to do with the fact that I need to reconfigure in pppoeconf after every boot does it? I doubt it)

Ubuntu Networking :: No Connecting With Wired Or Wireless?

Apr 1, 2010

in short : installed 9.10 on a dell inspiron 600m which has a broadcom bcm4401 ethernet and an intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B mini PCI. At this point, i'm not too picky about which one works (meaning neither of them currently work). nm-tool seems to pick up on both : the broadcom (eth0) is using the b44 driver, State is unavailable; the intel (eth1) is using the ipw2100 driver, it's State is disconnected.

i have encryption turned off, and the wireless sees a number of AP's (including mine).

i'm jumping off the good ship m$ and determined to make this work!

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Router Connecting ?

Jun 21, 2010

I have a computer running Ubuntu, and a MacBook Pro. I need to buy a decently cheap wireless router that I can hook up to my Ubuntu so that it will send wifi signals and I can use the wifi to go online with my MacBook Pro. I was about to get one today, but remembered how Ubuntu is picky about working with things like that. I'm only going to be using it to get signals around the house which isn't that big at all.

So what would be the cheapest and decently efficient wireless routers that I can use which Ubuntu will cooperate with?

sudo-get -reinstall install bcmwl-kernel-source
Followed by a reboot which solves the problem.

I would like to try this out but the netbook only accepts a USB -router connection but my router doesn't have a USB port.
