Ubuntu Networking :: IBurst Modem Driver & 10.04 LTS LL Pppoeconf Required After Reboot?

Nov 9, 2010

I'm a Linux noob an I am really desperate for some top, top, top assistance. Been battling a while now with my iBurst USB modem driver and hope there is someone out there that can help? I have been through umpteen forums and threads and tried literally everything I read, but to no avail. I also realize there aren't many Ubuntu users that use the iBurst modem, but I am appealing to the few out there that do.

I have installed the open source ibriver-2.6.31 for my iBurst USB modem. Initially all went well with fast connection etc., connection everytime I boot, until... I started updates of 10.04 LTS, that is when I became aware, from the forums, that a re-install of the driver is required after every package update due to no "package management" in the iBdriver. what a pain in the proverbial to say the least!

Anyways.. now I am the stage where the driver is always installed, but...all of a sudden, I need to run pppoeconf and set up the driver after each boot to get connected!!!! If I can't find a solution it will force me back to Windoze7 which I dread to do! Can a script be written to pppoeconf (rp-pppoeconf.iso is loaded I think) automatically during boot perhaps?

So any top Linux hacker or "notsonoobasIam" user out there with a iBurst modem and similar pains & mis-fortunate experience please share your ideas and thoughts to correct this problem permanently for me please? (I should maybe mention that the other day I performed the "Grub2 Profile" exercise to try and speed up the boot time, this does not perhaps have something to do with the fact that I need to reconfigure in pppoeconf after every boot does it? I doubt it)

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.10 - Computer Not Recognizing Modem On Reboot

Jun 14, 2011

After trying to deal with a very frustrating problem in Ubuntu 11.04, which caused my Eee Pc 1001PX to freeze any time I connect it to a wireless network. It worked Perfectly using my ZTE WCDMA Mobile broadband modem though. I gave up - and Formatted my netbook, Downgrading it to Ubuntu 10.10. Now the problem is the exact opposite:
The Wireless works perfectly, But the Modem Is causing the trouble.

Here is the problem:
Whenever I reboot the Computer, It doesn't recognize the modem. If I right click the networks button on the top, go to edit connections, and Delete the mobile broadband connection I had previously configured, then unplug the device (usb) and reconnect it, The computer recognizes it, allowing me to reconfigure the connection (make a new mobile broadband connection). As you can guess, repeating this after every reboot is rather irritating.

Some Technical Details:
My pc: Asus Eee Pc 1001PX
My Mobile Modem: Zte WCDMA Netstick.

When I tried to update my Kernel, the Wireless Problem from Ubuntu 11.04 was back, and I had to reformat.

Ubuntu Networking :: EVDO Modem - Refuses To Connect Till Reboot

May 11, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 in South Africa and I am using a Neotel telephone device that connects with EVDO. I have followed instructions to get it working by typing: sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x1d09 product=0x4000.

I have also put it in /etc/init.d/rc.local to get it to load up on startup. This works and I am able to connect using the network manager. The problem is if I disconnect and then try to connect again later, it refuses to connect till I reboot and then it works, till I disconnect again.

Networking :: HSF Modem Driver Will NOT Work With Ubuntu 8.04

Mar 18, 2010

I have a Compaq Presario 2100 laptop running Ubuntu 8.04LTS. It has a Conexant HSF modem/chipset, for which I bought the Linuxant HSF modem driver- 56K max.It is installed and it "functions",ie: it will connect to my ISP and I can start to browse (Firefox), but it will inevitably disconnect itself. At this point it is always down to "turtle speed of 4800bps".I have consulted with Linuxant Support and they suggested different modem init. strings - mainly different modulations - V34,V90,V92 w/variations. Nothing has made any signif. diff. They won't offer any further help.My question is: Could it be that Ubuntu 8.04 specifically, or Ubuntu of any version, is the source of the problem??

I have Knoppix 5.1.1 Live CD which loads up fine, and I was hoping to try the HSF driver with it, but I need to get Kernel Source pkg. and that will take 2+ hrs. to download by dialup , so haven't tried it yet.

Ubuntu Networking :: Find A Driver For A Sprint 3G/4G Modem?

Jan 3, 2010

I need to find a driver for a Sprint 3G/4G modem. I am running 9.04.

Sprint lists this as a U300 but the actual part is a Franklin Wireless FW300DOWMX.

lsusb shows this as ID 16d8:6002 CMOTECH Co., Ltd. and ID 0409:005a NEC Corp. HighSpeed Hub

so my box can see the part.

If I can get just the 3G working that would help a lot. I would be happy to do beta, even alpha, testing.

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04 - Eth0 Not Up After Pppoeconf

Jun 15, 2010

I recently installed Lucid 10.04 on a P-IV desktop. The install went extremely smooth and Ubuntu was up and running. Hats off to the Ubuntu folks for the excellent user-friendly experience in the installation process. However , I have run into a networking issue. I connected my PC to the router issued by my ISP. This is a plug-n-play type of connection where the username/password settings are stored in the router and there is no configuration required in Ubuntu for accessing the internet. All I need to do is connect the router and my PC using the LAN cable. I was able to surf the net without any issues.

A few days later , this ISP service was down and hence I switched to another wired ISP. This ISP required me to dial a connection using another supplied router. I setup the connection using pppoeconf where I was asked to enter username/password. Again I was able to surf the internet without any issues. Next , I shutdown the system and before booting it , I switch back to my original ISP connection (the plug-n-play one). But now I am not able to connect to the internet. The router lights show that my PC is connected to it , but when I issue ping 192.168.1.1 to check connectivity with the router configuration, I get

Code:
$ ping 192.168.1.1
connect : Network is unreachable.
Also , issuing ifconfig does not show eth0.
NM-applet also does not appear in my notification panel at the top.
How I can go back to using my original plug-n-play ISP connection? I have read some posts about networking issues , but none quite like this one. Please note that all my Internet connections are Wired connections.

Here is my interfaces file
Code:
$ cat /etc/network/interfaces
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
iface dsl-provider inet ppp
pre-up /sbin/ifconfig eth0 up # line maintained by pppoeconf
provider dsl-provider
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet manual

Ubuntu Networking :: Wired Connection Works But Only By Pppoeconf

Jan 3, 2010

It's been a while since i've been trying to deal with this problem but it was useless. I've found many related problems to this, most unsolved and those who had solution wouldn't work for me. I have few mates who have the same problem and still didn't find a solution as well. Here's the problem:

Both on my Desktop and Laptop, the network manager won't recognize that there is a cable pluged on the computer so that it would start my connection. The solution to make it work is pretty simple and its everywhere: use pppoeconf.

Altough that does the trick to make my internet work, i get another problem that i found out to be related to this one, which is: I can't use VPN. Which make me assume that one problem is related to the other, is that on my laptop, which has wireless internet, ubuntu will recognize it and then i can simple use vpn. My desktop, on the other hand, isn't that lucky and does not have wireless, so i can't just use vpn. So far, i've been using vpn on windows when needed, but switching systems is really a pain, not to say i'd rather do that on ubuntu.

Few other suggested solutions were to use 'wicd' and other network managers, altough for some people that did work accoding to what i saw on boards, that didn't really work out for me as well. Wicd coldn't recognize it either. Other suggestion was to check on some txt file on ubuntu, erase few information and let it 'fill up' automatic, it didn't work as well(sorry i don't remember all details on this one).

This problem happened on:
First, wubi for ubuntu 9.04
Ubuntu 9.04(normal install.)
Ubuntu 9.10
Happened both on my Desktop and my notebook, but the same version i installed on both of them were used on other computers and they did work on them so i strongly believe it has to do with the os itself.

Ubuntu Networking :: Madwifi Driver Lost After Reboot And Suspend?

Aug 7, 2010

I have a bit of a silly question, as I should know better, but I have a Toshiba A200 laptop that wasn't working well with the default ath5k driver so I switched to madwifi. It works great, but after the laptop goes into suspend or reboots, the driver doesn't get loaded and wireless isn't available.

I've been working around this by going to proprietary drivers, which shows the madwifi driver. When I say activate, it comes back with a failed message but works.

I'd like to save myself from going through this several times a day, but I'm not 100% sure what to do. Do I add madwifi to modprobe or something like that?

Ubuntu :: Server Disappears From Network Hard Reboot Required

Nov 15, 2010

I've been having issues with my ubuntu server (10.04 LTS) lately. Every once in a while, anywhere from 3 days to a month or more, the server will just disappear from the network. All manner of trying to reach it from the outside fails, even from the LAN. Since it's headless, this is kind of problematic. After a hard power down or reboot, the server will always come back online, but this is very annoying for a remotely administered server.

What should I look for when trying to determine why the server keeps going offline? I can't tell if there are any other issues like a hard lockup or anything, just that it is not on the network anymore when this happens.

For example, if it installed a kernel update a few days ago, the update manager will touch a "reboot_required" file in /var/run, and when I ssh into the machine today I'll be greeted with a "System restart required" message.
