View 1 RepliesI'm looking to dual-boot Windows 7 and Debian 6 upon its release on my sister's laptop. I want to share a partition between the two of them so that /home points to this directory and the Windows equivalent also points to it (C:Users).
Anyway, I've heard good and bad things about the NTFSMount driver (I think it's NTFS-3G now) and the NTFSprogs project and so I am not so certain what I should believe. I do know that NTFS has relatively high overhead, though I do not recall the source of this assertion, so I am considering the use of EXFAT. An open source EXFAT project is hosted on Google Code at [url] and it utilizes the kernel module FUSE.
I'm quite certain that I've got everything covered on the Windows side -- that is, I know that both NTFS and EXFAT will be suitable filesystems for my required usage.
My issue is that I'm curious which will have superior performance and stability in Debian. I planned on building the package from source and mounting the device in my FSTAB but I have also found a PPA for Ubuntu on Launchpad at [url] that I could borrow the debian/rules from and make a .deb package from.
What do you guys think? Should I go at it with the EXFAT or NTFS partitioning? Is NTFS-3G actually fairly supported at this point? Or perhaps should I consider some alternate method?
I have also considered that the only files she will be sharing are those of music, videos, and pictures so it could be better to just link /home/xxxx/Pictures (Music and Videos, too) to the new partition instead of all of /home.
i have dlink dir-300 router which i flashed to dd-wrt v24 preSP2 (Build13064. I wish to try openwrt now,but i do not know how is openwrt Different from dd-wrt? Does any one have any info regarding this? All i read was openwrt is much more linux like than dd-wrt.

I want wired access to a desktop PC upstairs: I tried a USB wireless stick, and it just isn't cutting it. I'm hoping I can use an old WRT54G wireless router, install some hew firmware, and use it as a wireless access point. I would like to plug the desktop into the WRT54G (cabled), have the WRT54G get a DHCP address and register the desktop's hostname in DDNS (wireless), and have everything work.
Q: Is "wireless access point" the correct term here?
Q: Should I go with OpenWRT (suggested in a previous post: looks very promising), DD-WRT, or Tomato?
I am looking for a router and trying to decide which one to go with based on the firmware I will want to use. I like how Tomato has alot of graphs and can show alot of graphical data. Does DD-WRT or Openwrt have as many graphs available?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI need QOS on my network to limit bandwidth on an ip/mac address level, while monitoring bandwidth, banning sites, and keeping VPN (openVPN). Tomato is nice and simple, elegant graphs and user interface, and fits nicely on a wireless router (love to save hardware space), but the lack of a true QOS is getting annoying (bandwidth hoggers! would like better solution than to keep surprising them at their desk and asking nicely to check their bandwidth usage).
Is there a better solution to my problem? I'm I going to have to go full fledge Linux on a computer tied to wireless router and comcast to satisfy all that I need? or is there a better linux-like software I can put on my router (wrt54g v.3)?
Using Ubuntu Server 9.10 x64 and a tomato router to act as a wireless bridge to connect to another router. The reason I ask is because I do have the router set on WDS mode on the tomato firmware. I think I have it configured to the best of my ability, but when the interface is up, the signal doesn't get pushed out (no received packets) and it gives something at the bottom of an ifconfig eth0 "Interrupt:28".

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've managed to confirm that I can reach my home network via ssh from a remote location through my SMC Barricade when it is directly connected to the desktop machine but when the second router is put back into the chain ssh requests time out. The second router is a Linksys WRT 54GL running the Tomato firmware. The chain looks like this: ISP's router (bridged) --> Barricade -->WRT54GL-->desktop
The Barricade has port 22 forwarded to the Linksys' WAN address and it in turn forwards to the desktop address. It appears that it is a setting on the Linksys firmware that is preventing the remote connection. I've looked through the various settings many times but cannot see anything that would cause the problem.
What are the pros and cons of various current model ADSL modem routers for use with DD-WRT, OpenWRT or Tomato? There are, of course, hardware compatibility lists (HCLs) for each of these (DD-WRT, OpenWRT and Tomato) but many of the models are no longer available and there are so many that researching them all would be onerous. Many pages on the Internet recommend the WRTG54L and that would be great but it is no longer an option except second user which is increasingly difficult. What are the pros and cons of the various chipsets: ADM5120, AR7, IXP4xx and BCM63xx?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a device that must use a real IP address. Currently, my ISP uses DHCP and I can have up to 4 real IP address assigned. However, the cable modem only have 1 ethernet port and it's connected to my router (running Tomato, but can run DD-wrt or other Openwrt if required). Question stems from how I can connect the additional device, requiring a real IP? would be to get a switch and connect to the CM, Router, and Device. But alas, I want to avoid this route, since:
my wiring cabinet in my home is drawing lots of power and heat already Device will be unprotected by any firewall unable to monitor the traffic to/from device.Besides, what would be the FUN in that? what I want to do is to configure the router, so that one of the switchport is removed from the normal br0 bridge. Instead, I want to make it behave like a switch on the WAN port. What's the best way of doing this? Should I create another bridge on the WAN & the device port? Can a single port belongs to two bridges? or would I need to create a subinterface first? Would I need a DHCP-relay? Am I expecting too much from my poor cheapie router?

View 4 Replies View RelatedReproducible with Firefox 3.6.6 (installed from Ubuntu 10.04 repository), on Dell D620, Ubuntu 10.04 Steps to reproduce:
1) start Firefox from command line "firefox -P"
2) create new Firefox profile on NTFS volume (mounted with NTFS-3g)
3) add NoScript extension (through extension manager Get Add-ons), restart Firefox as suggested
4) extension is not added to Firefox In case at step 2) profile is created on Linux volume, at 4) extension is added to firefox.I'm not 100% sure, but I think this bug is related to Firefox 3.6 update (no problems with Firefox 3.5). I did not make proper investigation, but I have feeling same problem applies to Thunderbird 3.1.This issue does not allow to share Firefox/Thunderbird profile on dual boot machine (Ubuntu/WindowsXP).
Virtualbox, is great, except that I have no wireless networking or USB support. Problem one, is USB support. As far as I know there is a personal free use version of Virtualbox that includes USB support, however I can't find this copy to download it. Any ideas where I can find it? Second problem, I have an integrated wireless networking card in my laptop, that Ubuntu recognizes with no problems, but Virtualbox can't even "see" the device. I found a tutorial that addresses this know issues with wireless and Virtualbox, but I don't understand the instructions

I had the elrepo kmod-r8168 driver running smooth for a while on my development box.
Yesterday, I did a clean install on it and when I tried to install the latest kmod-r8168 rpm, it failed to enable the networking support:
# yum --enablerepo=elrepo install kmod-r8168
The install performed all proper steps to disable the 8169 driver, I double checked to be sure.This is not a connectivity issue. If I remove the kmod-r8168 rpm, reboot the server and run the ifconfig eth0 up to activate the interface, everything works as expected. I use the latest kernel (2.6.18-194.26.1.el5 x86_64).
First, I performed a clean install, activated the eth0 and did a yum update, then installed the kmod-r8168 with yum. Then, I reinstalled the OS again, activated the eth0 and installed the kmod-r8168 on a 5.5 CD based kernel, same fail results. The only hiccup is: every time I start the box, I have to activate the eth0 interface (with default CentOS 8169 driver):
# ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.3
# ping -c 3 192.168.1.1 (no packets lost)
# ifconfig eth0 up
Once I do this, I have network connectivity.
I am doing major deployment of opensuse 313 pcs from windows to opensuse. I am having a problem that I have to keep 2 ntfs partitions intact will deleting the partition that has windows. Now everything goes well, opensuse installs but the problem is that I cannot give user full rights to ntfs folders. I have used graphical file permission methods n terminal chown n chmod methos but still permissions revert back to root.

Unprivileged user can not mount NTFS block devices using the external FUSE library. Either mount the volume as root, or rebuild NTFS-3G with integrated FUSE support and make it setuid root. I have a computer that's booting Ubuntu 9.10 from the first of 4 drives. The other 3 drives are formatted as NTFS. Is it possible for my 9.10 to share the NTFS drives to the network so my other network users can access my NTFS drives while I'm booted to 9.10?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have this samba share for ghosting images to (backing up computers at work) and I can read the ghost images just fine from the share, but I am unable to write to the share. From any windows environment I have tried, I get a disk is full error. I have 200GB+ free space, so this is not the actual issue. I believe there is a write permission somewhere that I am overlooking. My setup basically lets me log in under the username samba from a client machine.
