i have dlink dir-300 router which i flashed to dd-wrt v24 preSP2 (Build13064. I wish to try openwrt now,but i do not know how is openwrt Different from dd-wrt? Does any one have any info regarding this? All i read was openwrt is much more linux like than dd-wrt.
View 5 RepliesMy main wireless is an ActionTek DSL modem: it handles my incoming DSL, all my DHCP and DDNS, and it's a good Wifi base station throughout the house. Life is Good. I want wired access to a desktop PC upstairs: I tried a USB wireless stick, and it just isn't cutting it. I'm hoping I can use an old WRT54G wireless router, install some hew firmware, and use it as a wireless access point. I would like to plug the desktop into the WRT54G (cabled), have the WRT54G get a DHCP address and register the desktop's hostname in DDNS (wireless), and have everything work.
Q: Is "wireless access point" the correct term here?
Q: Should I go with OpenWRT (suggested in a previous post: looks very promising), DD-WRT, or Tomato?
I am looking for a router and trying to decide which one to go with based on the firmware I will want to use. I like how Tomato has alot of graphs and can show alot of graphical data. Does DD-WRT or Openwrt have as many graphs available?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI need QOS on my network to limit bandwidth on an ip/mac address level, while monitoring bandwidth, banning sites, and keeping VPN (openVPN). Tomato is nice and simple, elegant graphs and user interface, and fits nicely on a wireless router (love to save hardware space), but the lack of a true QOS is getting annoying (bandwidth hoggers! would like better solution than to keep surprising them at their desk and asking nicely to check their bandwidth usage).
Is there a better solution to my problem? I'm I going to have to go full fledge Linux on a computer tied to wireless router and comcast to satisfy all that I need? or is there a better linux-like software I can put on my router (wrt54g v.3)?

The reason I ask is because I do have the router set on WDS mode on the tomato firmware. I think I have it configured to the best of my ability, but when the interface is up, the signal doesn't get pushed out (no received packets) and it gives something at the bottom of an ifconfig eth0 "Interrupt:28".
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've managed to confirm that I can reach my home network via ssh from a remote location through my SMC Barricade when it is directly connected to the desktop machine but when the second router is put back into the chain ssh requests time out. The second router is a Linksys WRT 54GL running the Tomato firmware. The chain looks like this: ISP's router (bridged) --> Barricade -->WRT54GL-->desktop
The Barricade has port 22 forwarded to the Linksys' WAN address and it in turn forwards to the desktop address. It appears that it is a setting on the Linksys firmware that is preventing the remote connection. I've looked through the various settings many times but cannot see anything that would cause the problem.

I dual boot Windows/Fedora 11 on my Dell Latitude D830 laptop, which has an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG card and I have just bought a Linksys WRT160NL wireless router. I am currently trying to set up OpenWRT linux on the router. Because of the nature of my problem I have also posted this on their forum.I am having trouble connecting to my OpenWRT install via Fedora. Things seem okay in Windows, but when I try to connect from linux my laptop locks up completely and I have to hard reboot. I previously have never had any trouble connecting to any other router with this install of Fedora.

I have a device that must use a real IP address. Currently, my ISP uses DHCP and I can have up to 4 real IP address assigned. However, the cable modem only have 1 ethernet port and it's connected to my router (running Tomato, but can run DD-wrt or other Openwrt if required). Question stems from how I can connect the additional device, requiring a real IP? would be to get a switch and connect to the CM, Router, and Device. But alas, I want to avoid this route, since:
my wiring cabinet in my home is drawing lots of power and heat already Device will be unprotected by any firewall unable to monitor the traffic to/from device.Besides, what would be the FUN in that? what I want to do is to configure the router, so that one of the switchport is removed from the normal br0 bridge. Instead, I want to make it behave like a switch on the WAN port. What's the best way of doing this? Should I create another bridge on the WAN & the device port? Can a single port belongs to two bridges? or would I need to create a subinterface first? Would I need a DHCP-relay? Am I expecting too much from my poor cheapie router?

How can i set my OpenWrt 10.03 router to not to use 192.168.1.0/24? instead, use a /32 mask, so every client, that gets an ip from the DHCP server just can't sniff the network traffic - it would be a great security feature to safely use e.g.: FTP!

I am trying to monitorize an OpenWRT (Backfire 10.03, r23115) router from an Ubuntu server, but I am having some problems. I have installed Nrpe (2.12) on the remote host (OpenWRT), I have executed the program as a deamon (/usr/sbin/nrpe -d) but when I start the NRPE deamon, I don't get anything about NRPE executing netstat -at or ps -ef.I would need to install check_nrpe on OpenWRT to find out if NRPE is working, but I can't find any ipk package with it. Now, once in the monitoring host when I try to reach the remote host from the server:
/usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_nrpe -H ip_remote_host
I get: Connection refused by host
Even, trying with localhost:
/usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_nrpe -H localhost
I get the same error: Connection refused by host
I have installed Nagios Plugins and the check_nrpe plugin. I have edited the /etc/nrpe.cfg file:
allowed_hosts=127.0.0.1 ip_server
I don't exactly know if it is remote host's fault, monitoring host's fault or both.
I am attempting to setup and old BBSinside of DosBOXI've built one of the DosBOX Megabuilds, with the NE2000 patch.It uses libpcap in order to piggy back on top of the system's NIC. All of the dosbox side appears to be working.My system comes up, gets the MAC address i told it to use, i can load a packet driver in dosbox, all of that seems well and good. The issue, i think, is on the linux side. It's built on a Fedora 14 box. I'm getting the feeling that networking isnt getting out of the dosbox instance. Does it seem possible that fedora needs to have some config in place to link networking over to dosbox?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.
Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.

I just got connected to Charter Cable Internet service a few days ago and I'm having a weird problem with my home network. Prior to this my network worked fine. On my network I have a desktop running Ubuntu 9.10/64 and Virtualbox with WinXP installed, an HTPC with Ubuntu 9.10/32 installed and a laptop dual booted with Ubuntu 9.10/32 and WinXP. The desktop and HTPC are hard wired to a wireless router and the laptop is wireless. The cable modem is hard wired to the router. I have samba installed and UFW is disabled. The problem is: with the cable modem turned off or on standby, all machines connect to each other and can transfer files, etc just fine but when I activate the cable modem all of the machines can connect to the Internet but the machines running Ubuntu can't connect to each other on the home network. If I boot the laptop into Windows, it can connect to the Linux machines just fine but if I boot it into Linux, it won't connect to the Linux machines but it can connect to the Internet and as far as the desktop, Ubuntu won't connect to the network but Windows running in the Virtualbox with bridged networking can connect to all of the machines.
