Networking :: Openwrt Or DD-WRT Have As Many Graphs Like Tomato?
Jan 16, 2011
I am looking for a router and trying to decide which one to go with based on the firmware I will want to use. I like how Tomato has alot of graphs and can show alot of graphical data. Does DD-WRT or Openwrt have as many graphs available?

My main wireless is an ActionTek DSL modem: it handles my incoming DSL, all my DHCP and DDNS, and it's a good Wifi base station throughout the house. Life is Good. I want wired access to a desktop PC upstairs: I tried a USB wireless stick, and it just isn't cutting it. I'm hoping I can use an old WRT54G wireless router, install some hew firmware, and use it as a wireless access point. I would like to plug the desktop into the WRT54G (cabled), have the WRT54G get a DHCP address and register the desktop's hostname in DDNS (wireless), and have everything work.
Q: Is "wireless access point" the correct term here?
Q: Should I go with OpenWRT (suggested in a previous post: looks very promising), DD-WRT, or Tomato?

What are the pros and cons of various current model ADSL modem routers for use with DD-WRT, OpenWRT or Tomato? There are, of course, hardware compatibility lists (HCLs) for each of these (DD-WRT, OpenWRT and Tomato) but many of the models are no longer available and there are so many that researching them all would be onerous. Many pages on the Internet recommend the WRTG54L and that would be great but it is no longer an option except second user which is increasingly difficult. What are the pros and cons of the various chipsets: ADM5120, AR7, IXP4xx and BCM63xx?

I need QOS on my network to limit bandwidth on an ip/mac address level, while monitoring bandwidth, banning sites, and keeping VPN (openVPN). Tomato is nice and simple, elegant graphs and user interface, and fits nicely on a wireless router (love to save hardware space), but the lack of a true QOS is getting annoying (bandwidth hoggers! would like better solution than to keep surprising them at their desk and asking nicely to check their bandwidth usage).
Is there a better solution to my problem? I'm I going to have to go full fledge Linux on a computer tied to wireless router and comcast to satisfy all that I need? or is there a better linux-like software I can put on my router (wrt54g v.3)?

Using Ubuntu Server 9.10 x64 and a tomato router to act as a wireless bridge to connect to another router. The reason I ask is because I do have the router set on WDS mode on the tomato firmware. I think I have it configured to the best of my ability, but when the interface is up, the signal doesn't get pushed out (no received packets) and it gives something at the bottom of an ifconfig eth0 "Interrupt:28".

I've managed to confirm that I can reach my home network via ssh from a remote location through my SMC Barricade when it is directly connected to the desktop machine but when the second router is put back into the chain ssh requests time out. The second router is a Linksys WRT 54GL running the Tomato firmware. The chain looks like this: ISP's router (bridged) --> Barricade -->WRT54GL-->desktop
The Barricade has port 22 forwarded to the Linksys' WAN address and it in turn forwards to the desktop address. It appears that it is a setting on the Linksys firmware that is preventing the remote connection. I've looked through the various settings many times but cannot see anything that would cause the problem.

I'm trying to set up my router, with tomato firmware, to save the bandwidth usage information. One of the 'save history' choices is "CIFS" ... I'm lost as to how to create this save area..anyone able to give me a link to a 'how to' ...or if you've done it, perhaps a step by step?

I dual boot Windows/Fedora 11 on my Dell Latitude D830 laptop, which has an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG card and I have just bought a Linksys WRT160NL wireless router. I am currently trying to set up OpenWRT linux on the router. Because of the nature of my problem I have also posted this on their forum.I am having trouble connecting to my OpenWRT install via Fedora. Things seem okay in Windows, but when I try to connect from linux my laptop locks up completely and I have to hard reboot. I previously have never had any trouble connecting to any other router with this install of Fedora.

I just spent an hour at Google and the OpenWRT site looking for something that might be called a "List of Features." I did not find one.
I did find this: url but it is not an official project document so I'm left with as many questions as answers.
I know that OpenWRT uses dynamic packages for feature deployment, but I'd expect some sort of grid page -- package vs. edition -- or similar so that one might have some idea what is available to choose from.
{commentary}
I know that part of the Linux sociology involves some amount of "you just gotta know." However, unless one is a networking maven or wonk one does not know enough about network features to state which features one wants ... much less know what name to use in search or discussion.

making My simulation graphs in Ns-2.34 in ubuntu how i can make them. my simualtion is about Home automation lighting control and i wnated to make 6 graphs1) time VS Residaul energy ( remaining enregy of the nodes)like sensors (we have mentioned Insteon sensor and Switchlinc Dimmer)use 9V battery in them. the 9V should be converted in joules and Energy on Y-axis should be in Joules and time on X-axis should be of simulation timeThe graph would be showing after running the simulation 3000 times how much energy is remaining or how much energy is consumed in the nodes after sending 2000 packets.2) Packet size Vs Delay, Delay on Y-axis and Packet size on X-axis with there units and the graph would be showing if Pacjet size increases how much delay is created.3) Throughput Vs Badwidth. througput on Y-axis and Bandwidth on X-axis4) Packets Loss Vs data rate5) Packets sent Vs data rate6) Packets received Vs data rate

I have a device that must use a real IP address. Currently, my ISP uses DHCP and I can have up to 4 real IP address assigned. However, the cable modem only have 1 ethernet port and it's connected to my router (running Tomato, but can run DD-wrt or other Openwrt if required). Question stems from how I can connect the additional device, requiring a real IP? would be to get a switch and connect to the CM, Router, and Device. But alas, I want to avoid this route, since:
my wiring cabinet in my home is drawing lots of power and heat already Device will be unprotected by any firewall unable to monitor the traffic to/from device.Besides, what would be the FUN in that? what I want to do is to configure the router, so that one of the switchport is removed from the normal br0 bridge. Instead, I want to make it behave like a switch on the WAN port. What's the best way of doing this? Should I create another bridge on the WAN & the device port? Can a single port belongs to two bridges? or would I need to create a subinterface first? Would I need a DHCP-relay? Am I expecting too much from my poor cheapie router?

how graphs can be plotted on a web interface on real time ? I have a web interface coded in PHP mostly and for graphs I have jpgraphs. But the job needs the graphs to be real time not static. As of now there's a server side program that writes onto a csv file. I read data from the file and plot it using jpgraph when the page loads. Is there anyway I can code real-time dynamic graphs on a web interface ?

When the memory usage reaches 95% and above I noticed that the disk activity and load graphs go up and some of my applications are killed by the system. In windows, if someone define a pagefile then the OS will try to use it at the expense of very slow response. Why ubuntu does not use SWAP in such a way?

I've been trying to make a bunch of graphs using gnuplot from a bash script. The tricky thing is that I have to divide values from two columns: Code: plot "results.csv" using 1:($4/$6) notitle with lp When this command is called from a bash script, the columns get mixed up with script arguments. how to make it read the column values like in the interactive mode?

The data tables copied fine but the graphs did not. i made both in spreadsheet and copy pasted them over to a writer document.

I followed the below steps
1. Creating a rrd database file
rrdtool create diskusage.rrd --start N DS:Usage:ABSOLUTE:600:1:100 RRA:AVERAGE:0.5:1:432
I then updated the rrd file with below cron entry code...
Why no data is coming into the rrd file ?

How can i set my OpenWrt 10.03 router to not to use 192.168.1.0/24? instead, use a /32 mask, so every client, that gets an ip from the DHCP server just can't sniff the network traffic - it would be a great security feature to safely use e.g.: FTP!
