Ubuntu :: Ubuntu 9.10 + NTFS-Config And Files Missing From NTFS Partition?

Apr 22, 2010

First off let me say that I love working with Ubuntu. It's a great OS to learn Linux on. Now on to my problem. I have a laptop that dual boots. Ubuntu 9.10 x64 and Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Been working just fine. I was using NTFS-Config to auto mount the Win7 partition during startup of Ubuntu. It has been running fine. I am able to move files between the linux partition and the NTFS partition with no problem. Now I've come across a problem. I big problem. Just this week I installed VirtualBox onto Ubuntu. I started creating virtual machines. 6 in all (3 Win 2k3, 1 2k8 and 1 Win7). I was saving the virtual machines to the NTFS drive as this was by far my largest drive. I used a directory titled "virtualbox" under the c:/users/public directory. This setup was working great. Was able to get my vm's patched and up to date. Created several snapshots. Basically I was a happy camper.

Last night I booted into Windows 7. OS started fine. I was just surfing the web. After that I rebooted the system and entered Ubuntu and started Virtualbox. I tried to start a vm and it complained that the virtual harddrive was missing. I checked to make sure that the path was correct for the virtual drive and discovered that the entire virtualbox directory that I created on the NTFS partion was gone!!! Everything else was in place and intact including music and large video files that I had downloaded to the Ubuntu partion and moved the the NTFS partion.

I save these virtual machines???? Should I abandon using NTFS-Config. This is somewhat critical since I had took sometime to create this test lab and to have it disappear from simply booting into Windows 7 is crazy.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Install Firefox Extension If Profile Is On NTFS (NTFS-3g) Volume?

Jul 16, 2010

Reproducible with Firefox 3.6.6 (installed from Ubuntu 10.04 repository), on Dell D620, Ubuntu 10.04 Steps to reproduce:

1) start Firefox from command line "firefox -P"

2) create new Firefox profile on NTFS volume (mounted with NTFS-3g)

3) add NoScript extension (through extension manager Get Add-ons), restart Firefox as suggested

4) extension is not added to Firefox In case at step 2) profile is created on Linux volume, at 4) extension is added to firefox.I'm not 100% sure, but I think this bug is related to Firefox 3.6 update (no problems with Firefox 3.5). I did not make proper investigation, but I have feeling same problem applies to Thunderbird 3.1.This issue does not allow to share Firefox/Thunderbird profile on dual boot machine (Ubuntu/WindowsXP).

Debian Installation :: Critical Bug Of "mount -t Ntfs" Cause NTFS Partition Broken

May 2, 2010

About dual boot system with winxp and lenny.

Storage information:
1st primary:SG 160G ATA 100
1st secondary:WD 160 ATA 133
SATA:WD 1000
2nd primary:DVD
2nd secondary:DVD±RW

Winxp in 1st primary.I did a fresh install of lenny on 1st secondary.

info about lenny setup:
1.Partition list:/boot,/,/home,swap
2.Every partition is XFS except swap.

At the end of installion, lenny installed grub on (hd0) that is 1st primary.

Everything seems OK.Lenny runs OK.

But when I switch back to windows xp,the diskmgmt can not detect hdd's info and the system meets a problem of shutting down.

After many times of trying.
I solved the problem by the following way.
1.Boot with windows xp's install CD and use fixmbr on (hd0).
2.Boot with lenny's install DVD , do a grub>root (1,0)>setup (hd1)
After that,edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and change (hd0,0) to (hd1,0) and also (hd1,0) to (hd0,0).
3.Reboot and Press F8 for a boot menu then I can select which disk to boot.
windows boot from 1st primary's mbr, lenny boot from lenny's grub.

The problem is caused by a bug between GRUB and windows' mbr and maybe more about GRUB and XFS.

Fedora :: NTFS - Config Tool Will Not Open And Gives Error

Sep 10, 2009

When logged in as my standard user in Fedora 11 gnome desktop the installed ntfs-config tool will not open and gives an error which says this; "no authentication program found", and to run that ntfs-config as the root in a terminal. So then the only way to open that tool is to type that in a terminal, and it did open, but how can I fix this ? Can this issue be related to ownership and permissions of it ? Also the num lock does not come on during boot up, is there a easy fix for that too ? This is a recent fresh updated install from the DVD with the ext4 file system. All the ntfs-3g applications are installed as default, so I just added that enable ntfs write support tool with the package manager.

Code:

Please see more information at [URL] Before installing ntfs-3g I was able to mount as a user but there was no rw permission. Software :: Best Tool To Resize NTFS Partition With XP Installed On Vista?

Jan 19, 2010

What's the best tool or method to resize an NTFS partition containing Windows XP Home but with some evidence of being installed using Windows Vista? (Possible answer: Windows 7...) I bought a Fizzbook Spin, UK version of Intel Classmate PC with touchscreen. Disk is about 55 GB; I want to resize system partition C to about 17 gigabytes and then maintain it using something like partimage on live CD/DVD/USB for complete backup of volume: 15 gigabytes roughly compresses to one DVD, 2 gigabytes for hibernation memory storage which I won't back up (and can't move off C), pagefile on the next volume (probably 4000 MB on FAT32, an affordable commitment of disk space to buy not worrying about the page file size). Plus, I will be able to store the backup of volume C on volume D.

The machine can boot Linux (Knoppix 6.2) from external DVD drive, from a USB flash memory key, and from SD[?HC] card. I don't have a separate Windows install CD or recovery partition, but there's an Intel tool to generate a recovery, um, stick. There's evidence that XP's partition was created by Vista, as follows: 1 MB unused before the system partition; an error message about "correcting errors in the uppercase file" which apparently means "Vista did something on this disk that XP thinks is wrong, but this is not serious" - and several attempts to resize the volume with GParted have left Windows unbootable, blue-screening for a split-second and then rebooting. Apparently that's a Vista experience, and it would've been really bad if I hadn't taken a backup already.

I'm pretty sure that in at least one attempt, I remembered and successfully turned OFF the default-on "Round to cylinder" option in GParted... or is that WRONG? Standard Vista/Parted/resize advice (before 2010) such as [URL] seems to be "Use GParted, then use the Windows Vista installation CD to make your ruined hard disk partition properly bootable again." Since I don't have a Vista installation CD to use or legally borrow for this computer - unless I buy Vista or Windows 7 (which I'm considering anyway, for speech recognition) - I appear to be stuck. I do have more than one other XP computer, in case I can use something from there to exorcise the Vista-ness. But I want to keep the extra software (and device drivers) supplied with this little computer.

Debian :: Can't Write To USB HDD With NTFS

Dec 26, 2010

The task is to create a TrueCrypt file on a buddy's USB HDD and copy a bunch of my stuff to the file. He runs Win7 so disk has NTFS. He has data on it that I don't want to compromise. Disk then goes back to him to run under Win7.The disk automounts just fine. Here's the mtab line:/dev/sdb1 /media/OneTouch440Plus ntfs rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=hal,uid=1000.Read (as user) is no problem. It looks like I should (as user) be able to write to it but I can't. Permissions show user as owner but read-only and can't be changed by owner. I've tried an fstab entry and mounting from CLI but no luck. I have not tried to manipulate the disk files with chown/chmod out of concern I might compromise other files on the drive.

Debian :: HDA5 Cannot Be Mounted NTFS 3G

Oct 8, 2010

I've carelessly installed grub on hda5 instead of hda, using:
# grub-install /dev/hda5
And now my hda5 cannot be mounted with ntfs-3g. Here the error message 'mount' gives:
Failed to mount '/dev/hda5': Invalid argument
The device '/dev/hda5' doesn't seem to have a valid NTFS.

As far as I know, grub-install rewrites the 1st sector of the device, and I've been reading this guide on recover the 1st sector of an NTFS partition. The problem is that the Disk Probe tool is available in Windows only. Is there any similar software in Debian to do the same thing (i.e allows us to edit sectors of the hard drives available in the computer)? Any easier tool / method to restore the NTFS partition without read and write sectors manually.
