Ubuntu Networking :: Correct Key Rejected - Wireless Net Disappears

Mar 3, 2010

Out of the blue a dialog popped up requesting that I enter the key for my home wireless network. This is of course unexpected since the correct key is defined for that network in my network config. I entered the correct key but it was rejected. I then clicked on the network manager icon in the task bar. Contrary to normal behavior this did not show either my home network or any of the other wireless networks from my neighbors. The only resolution I could find to restore the wireless network was restarting my system. This seems excessive.

Ubuntu Networking :: WEP Wireless Authentication Rejected (Though Key Is Correct)?

Feb 18, 2011

I have 2 laptops running Ubuntu 10.04. One connects to my Linksys wireless modem fine while the other does not. The one that does not connect, will connect fine within the instances of Windows XP SP3 and Puppy Linux 5.1 that run on the same laptop. Ubuntu wireless worked fine with version 8.04 on this laptop before upgrading to 10.04.

When trying to connect within 10.04, Ubuntu pops up the dialog box to enter the authentication key. It rejects the correct key, and after a moment, pops up the same dialog box asking for the key again. I'm using WEP 40/128-bit encryption and the key I enter in the dialog box is the correct 26-character key.

The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite Pro 6000 (1g ram/40g disk). Here are some vital outputs root@user-laptop:/home/bsmis# iwconfig

lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.

So i ran the command 'rmmod ssb' and now my broadcomm wireless device is "unclaimed"

Ubuntu Networking :: 9.10 - Installing Correct Drivers To Get Wireless Running

Feb 13, 2010

I have just installed Ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix for my new laptop. I've tried at great length to install the correct drivers to get my wireless up and running. I'm currently trying to install the Broadcom driver for my 802.11g wireless card. I have downloaded the headers and tools for ubuntu and am proceeding with the instructions given on [URL].

But when I get to these steps I come unstuck
# mkdir hybrid_wl
# cd hybrid_wl
# tar xzf <path>/hybrid-portsrc.tar

I can make the directory and open it but when it comes to the third step I get a message saying that there is no such file or directory.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade To 10.04 Leads To Loss Of Correct Screen Resolution / Wireless Networking / Sound

May 4, 2010

Excited at seeing the new features in 10.04, I clicked the Upgrade button tonight. I am now really regretting it! Problems:

1. My screen resolution should be 1280x1024 but the System>Preferences>Monitors control panel only shows 1024x768.

I think I have onboard Realtek graphics. Do I need to install proprietary drivers? Everything worked fine out of the box with 9.10!

2. The sound isn't working. Again I think I have onboard Realtek sound, and again it used to work fine without any intervention from me...

3. Although on first startup wireless networking was working fine, I restarted to see if that would solve the display issue, and wireless networking stopped working too!

I have an RaLink wireless card.

When I used Grub to choose 2.6.31.20, I got some error messages at startup (e.g. mount couldn't mount /dev), but then it did eventually start up and the sound and wireless networking are working again. But the resolution is still not fixed. It is now offering 1152x864, which it didn't previously, but no 1280x1024 (my screen's native resolution).

Networking :: Capture A Dropped Or Rejected Firewall Packet?

I'm running ubuntu 11.04, and using firestarter for my firewall. Logging events, all good, but I'd like to be able to (tcp)dump the packets being dropped/rejected. Wireshark is great after the event, but can I hook iptables and tcpdump together somehow so the system logs the entire packet rather than the summary when it says "no"? I've had a quick look/google, but can't find anything. I'm sure somebody must have wanted to do this before - any pointers people?

PS - will keep looking and post the answer if I find one....

Fedora Networking :: F10 Machine Disappears From Network

Jul 8, 2009

The problem in a sentence: a F10 machine seems to disappear from the network after running for a couple of days, however, the network is accessible from the machine itself. My setup: A router with two machines connected via ethernet. Both are essentially desktop computers, one is a standard machine that is booted every day (let's call it Desktop) and the other runs continuously, having only a keyboard attached (let's call it Server).

After running for a few days, Server becomes inaccessible from Desktop. It doesn't respond to ping, ssh fails etc. Even the router shows that Server is disconnected from the network. There is a ping running in Server that pings a machine in the internet with an interval of 60 seconds, the output is directed to a file. The file shows no failed pings, it even succeeds when the router shows that Server is disconnected.

The most peculiar thing: a random keyboard event (e.g. pressing Shift) will make Server reappear. I don't have to do anything else, just press Shift on Server's keyboard and a few moments later everything is back to normal. The router shows that Server is connected and I'm able to do ssh to Server.

Networking :: Cable Modem Connection Fails - Static Route Disappears

Jan 24, 2011

Running Gentoo with kernel 2.6.29 on a Sparc Ultra 10. I'm having problems with my cable modem connection failing, so I've added a static route that enables me to log into the modem's diagnostics page at 192.168.100.1 when the connection drops; my /etc/conf.d/net looks like this (with the comment lines removed).

Code:
dns_domain_lo="MYNETWORK"
config_eth1=("192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255")
config_eth0=("dhcp")
routes_eth0=(
"192.168.100.1/32 via 0.0.0.0"
) dhcpcd_eth0="-N"

This works but after a period of several hours to several days, this static route disappears from the routing table.

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba Setting Permissions Not Correct

Jun 28, 2011

I am experiencing strange difficulties with Samba. The permissions aren't set correctly, when creating a file or a folder on the mounted samba share.

My smb.conf looks as follows:
Code:
[shareOffice]
path = /home/shareOffice
writable = yes
browseable = yes
create mode = 0777
directory mask = 0777
force create mode = 0777
force directory mode = 0777

Now if I create a regular file on the folder:
Code:
touch testFile; ls -l
The permissions turn out to be:
Code:
-rwxr-xrwx 1 simon share 0 2011-06-28 21:42 testFile

Why the w bit on the group is missing? If I play around with the create mode / force create mode, I get every other possible permission output --- except the write access for group members.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Navigate .conf And Default Route Are Correct?

May 24, 2010

I ask your help to diagnose a problem. For business reasons I use a broadband internet connection via a mobile phone's connected via bluetooth [rfcomm]. Speed is not the maximum but it is more than sufficient for my work. For configuration of ppp I followed this guide Pon pulls up dialup, but I can't navigate also if resolv.conf and default route are correct. In addition I would like to use the NetworkManager that by default, does not see the device. I worked around the problem this way:

I modified the / etc / rc.local so that launch at boot time: # Rfcomm bind yes

After starting Lucid Lynx, bluetooth connects to the phone but NetworkManager does not see the modem.
When I run the connection manually, by: # Pon BluetoothDialup

NetworkManager sees the device, but can not use it because obviously it is locked by the ppp daemon.
So I close the connection with: # poff

Now NetworkManager sees the broadband modem via / dev/rfcomm0, dialup is performed properly. I can finally surf and just enable vpn with NetworkManager. all start automatically at boot, without the need to manually connect and disconnects the dialup to use, finally, the NetworkManager.

Ubuntu Networking :: Making Sure Two Network Cards Each Have The Correct IP Addresses?

Nov 2, 2010

I've got two NICs connected to two different routers, and on different subnets of course. Each is set for static IP. But somehow I must have mixed up the connections at some point, so the NICs don't always have the IP addresses I expect. I think there may also be a mixup with different ways of setting the network addresses. When I click the Network Icon on the Desktop, I see that each NIC has both addresses as options. The /etc/network/interfaces file has some information about eth0, but all commented out, so there must be another place the addresses get set. And I just discovered that eth0 and eth1 aren't physical but virtual. I guess eth0 is the first one that is set.

2. a Suse 10 machine 2.6.22.xxx kernel

3. a Ubuntu 9.10 machine 2.6.31.20.xxx kernel

I can use sftp/ssh between 1 and 2. in either direction - no problem.

I cannot sftp/ssh between 3 and anything. sshd is running on the ubuntu machine. I used to be able to sftp/ssh between 2 and 3 but only if 2 started the process.

The failure is machine #3 not accepting the password to or from the other machines, or at least that's how it presents.

All machines can ping each other.

The configs are defaults

I only dimly understand what's going on.
