On about 90% of bootups I find that network manager has disappeared from the notification area to be replaced by a random duplicate of one of the other icons (at random). If I remove the notification area and add it again all is fine.
View 9 Repliesam new to ubuntu, have some issues with connecting to wireless. I have downloaded my wireless drivers and installed, I can see that my wireless is on from the indicatior, but I cant connect to any wireless access point because I cant locate network manager on the notification area. Am using Dell inspiron 1501.The second issue I have is connecting as root. after I installed ubuntu, it created a user for me which I specified during installation, but most things am doing requires root privilleges. I cant connect as root because I dont know root password, I have tried changing the password but it doesn't go. Pls guys help me sort out these issues.
View 2 Replies View Relatedim just getting the hang of ubuntu 9.10, and then all of a sudden 10.04 comes over and screws everything up with the upgrade. i did the upgrade, and now the network manager wont show up in notification areas. any clue as to why? help is greatly appreciated. also, my machine does register that the drivers for wireless card is installed, and when i run lshw -c net command with sudo priveleges, it says it can detect networks, so im confused as hell.
View 9 Replies View RelatedHi. I have Ubuntu 10.04, nm-applet is running in the background, my battery icon and sound icon are showing but my network icon has been missing for the past 2 days. It was working fine before but now it's not. How can I fix this issue if I don't have an ethernet cord? Is there a way to roll back the recent updates or do I need to reinstall my network manager?
I've tried restarting the system and I've tried killing nm-applet and reloading it using Alt F2. I get some Debug error.
When I try to run nm-applet --sm-disable
It says an instance is already running and then gives me a warning.
I tried removing "iface eth0 inet dhcp" from /etc/network/interfaces and then tried restarting by "sudo /etc/initi.d/networking restart"

What can I do to connect to the internet? I have a flash stick if its possible to download a .deb package on this mac and transfer it over to my other laptop to fix the problem. If its possible.
After upgrading to Kubuntu 10.10 the icon for the gnome-network-manager (which I had installed instead of the former knetworkmanager) does not show up.
Although I can connect to the Internet, I am not able to set up my VPN without an icon showing up.

1. network manager keeps disappearing from notification area, I would have to run the following command to have it show up again nm-applet every-time I log to the system.
2. Audio goes a way all the sudden, I have to log out and log back in to fix this issue.
So, there is no Network Manager in the system notification area, but it is turned on, as you can see from the pic. below So i thought it is a bug... and better to ask you about this problem.I'm using latest ubuntu 10.04 (x64 version).Just for information.I had problem with NM before, in Ubuntu 9.10,it cannot make internet connection. View 4 Replies View RelatedI was using both the Indicator Applet and the Notification Area applets in my panel but realized that very often when I started the system, the icons of these applet appeared mixed. Some items were duplicated (for example the keyboard indicator) where others were missing (sometimes the battery indicator, sometimes the sound indicator, etc). When that happened I had to remove them and add them to panel again.
This seems to be a bug that makes one applet interfere with the other (maybe because there are some items that appear in both but when you add both initially nothing is duplicated but after a system restart the problem happens).After searching for some way to fix this apparent bug without success I decided to remove the Indicator applet and keep just the Notification Area.
It works but then I don't have the sound applet anymore, because it was part of the Indicator Applet.
I searched for a standalone sound applet but I couldn't find any. Do you know of any such applet that I could install in the system? If I can find any it would be fine to me and I would be satisfied using just the Notification Area.
Fresh install (10.04), only the packages that I thought I needed. nm-applet is running, but not appearing in the notification area of the panel.
View 9 Replies View Relatedi'm running ubuntu 10.04 x86 on my laptop and the following problem occured recently; i made a mistake and tried to remove the monitors icon by finally removing more than i hoped for :/ BUT that didn't disappear the whole notification area...i was left with the wireless icon and the input language switcher so i can't restore the battery icon and the sound icon and the mail/chat envelope icon.

WI-FI was working fine, though a slight pain for asking for the key every time. I thought I would apply all updates I could find and that may improve my networking.Having applied all I can find the wi-fi is now broken.If I use YaST I can see the Broadcom internal device seems to remain recognised, it even has the configuration I set for my wi-fi network access.The problem seems to be the NetManager applet, which denies all knowledge of wi-fi now and only has wired (which is working).Ironically the update causing the failure was applied wirelessly.I am slightly at a loss how best to proceed - I was going to cut my losses and make another boot partition with Ubuntu, but the live CD I made failed to run so that I could make a flash boot version, I shall have to return to that.
I have also now discovered that SUSE 10 is a bit long in the tooth - I sort of assumed it was current, given I bought the machine recently. So I'm wondering if it would be best to take the hit and reformat completely? I know it is broadcom, so should not be a problem, and I have been through ndiswrapper and the like in the past, though somehow I seem to have forgotten all about it now!I was happy enough with the SUSE setup and this is highly annoying as I was only updating to fix an annoyance and now the wifi has been broken... Whenever I start up my laptop i do not get a wireless connection automatically. I have to rightclick network manager applet and select enable networking. After that everything works fine untill i shutdown and restart my laptop. I would like a way to change this so that my wifi connection is working whithout having to click something first..

I'm not sure if I have two seperate issues or one inter-related issue. The Network Manager applet wasn't appearing in the tray, found out it wasn't installed. Installed, still didn't appear. Tried installing WiCd, WiCd did appear but couldn't find any networks. I had installed restricted drivers previous, decided it was worth another look. Found that Broadcom STA Wireless Driver wasn't installed. Tried to install, it said it couldn't and said I should review the var/log/jockey which is....excessively long.

When I rebooted, after giving up on Bluetooth in Ubuntu, I had no way of connecting to my wireless network. In command line (iwconfig & iwlist scan) I was able to see the wireless router. So the wireless card is working correctly. How do I reinstall the network manager applet? Oh even when use a wired connection to the router there is no connection.

Hence I couldn't connect to the available wireless network. I am able to add Network Monitor, which is similar to Network manager, but this just displays info about current network.

From next reboot the Network Manager Applet which was present on right hand upper corner, disappeared. I wonder why? This has happened with 9.04, 9.10 and now in 10.04. Another question is, are Network Manager settings (ip) and /etc/network/interfaces do correspond to same thing or not? As I have narrated above, since network manager applet is no more visible how to see the physical network cable connectivity status (as we do in windows xp)? (is there any other app of such kind or what?)
