I have 2 computers, one running Windows 7 (and connected to my router wirelessly) and another running the latest Ubuntu Server version and I am just wondering, since I've already got the windows machine to share the internet connection via their LAN connection, how would I get the Ubuntu to use it?
View 8 RepliesI just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.
Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a DSL internet connection. The DSL is just a cable that comes into my house, no routers under my control. For a long time the internet functioned fine in Ubuntu using the default Network Manager. Recently however, my ISP was bought by another ISP, and the service name had to be changed in the DSL settings. In Windows, it connects without any issue whatsoever, only the service name change was required... But in Ubuntu, the first time I connect I get a "Apache: Not Found" page, the next time, I get to the previous ISP's login page, it continues like this for some time until I get it working. I have to try connecting it again and again.
When I asked the customer service, they said that because of the takeover, they have switched servers. But they said, it should work properly in Windows, and they were clueless about Ubuntu. Is there anything I can do to solve this issue?
I have the latest version of ubuntu on an HP dv4000 laptop fully updated. wireless worked out of the box. but the wired connection wont start. Problem is with the ubuntu install not the network. But i dont know how to configure it to work.

The problem that I have been struggling with is while connecting to VPN server, I can't connect to other sites.
I am on 11.04, but this have been happening on 10.10 as well.
On Win7, I was able to browse the VPN and the other sites at the same time without any issue.
I also tried by checking ON the "Use this connection only for resources on its network" option (under IPv4 settings tab) but doing that is allowing me to browse all sites except the VPN site. The method that I am using is "Automatic (VPN)".
Need your help to solve this issue.
My sons Ubuntu installation on his computer hasn't showed the Network Connections Icon in the Panel for a long time. This weekend everything was working fine and we needed to go away for the weekend and unhooked the router. When we came back the computer wouldn't connect back up to the internet.
How can I fix the Wired Connections Icon on the Panel and get the Auto Connect to work again?
I am using UBUNTU 9.04 on a HP mini notebook. I pratically never had problem connecting wireless with my netbook, expecially with this connection at home. Until yesterday. There were some line problems, that have been solved after some hours. Then I was able again to connect.
I didnt do nothing on the netbook. After 2 hours, connection gone. Now, even if other laptops are wonderfully connected (to the same line), mine has a dramatically slow connection (in the sense that is able to open just the first page of google if I am lucky) or no connection at all (even if the signal looks good on the network panel.
I tryed the help for wireless troubleshooting, checked for device recognition. Putting in terminal sudo lshw -C network Says disabled. But the device of the wireless on my pc is on, and it's also enabled in its panel.
I have a Netgear DG834 ADSL router (v3) which I have used for a couple of years. Prior to that I had a v2 of the same router, but upgraded for the one that supports ADSL 2+ (here in the UK).
Recently I have been having problems with the connection often being dropped, and when I access 192.168.0.1 for the router admin page, when it is not working I get no IP address listed for that of the ISP's server, and sometimes as well the upstream and downstream speeds are listed as 0 kbps.
Usually this was resolved by rebooting the router.
However, for the last couple of days, when using Ubuntu 9.04, the page of the router at 192.168.0.1 will not load. I have tried numerous different browsers, and none of them will give the router admin page.
When I tried booting from a live CD of Fedora 13, the router admin page came up just fine, no problems (although still not getting a proper connection to the Internet).
I was going to try to use the older router I had, but so far, as I cannot access the router admin page in Ubuntu, I have not done so (not had the time, and now I am at work posting this).
So there must be a problem in Ubuntu that is preventing it showing the router's admin page. The Network connection details show that the router has given the PC an IP address of 192.168.0.6 and the DNS servers are listed, so I know that Ubuntu is talking to the router, but it is not allowing me to access its settings in any way.
Just had an issue crop up where connecting wired network seems to stop wireless connections from getting an IP (happens on multiple networks both while the cable is plugged in and once it's been unplugged; also persists across reboots). Machine is a Dell Latitude 2120n with UnionFS running. Connection was working fine prior to the wired connection

It affects all machines that connect to the internet through a Netgear WIFI Modem Router. I recently tried an alternative when this happens is to use a USB Huawei Mobile Broadband UMTS connection which works when you insert it in 1 laptop. Is there a way i could get the Netgear WIFI modem router to connect on that usb stick or PC that is online on that usb stick and give access to other machines that will want to connect to the web ?

Sometimes I am unable to connect to my WEP network in ubuntu. No matter how many times I try, even restarting, it will not allow me to connect. However if I boot into XP, I can connect to the network. Then when I reboot again and then try in Ubuntu again, it will work.
Router is a Netgear MR814v2
After many hours of searching forums, help files, turning on/off firewalls, etc, I need someone far smarter than myself to help me connect to the above machine. I also looked into Samba and do not understand how to use it. It is installed on my Linux laptop, but I have no idea how to access it. I'm hoping that connecting to my Windows laptop is a fairly simple process.

This works fine so long as I specify the username and password statically. Is there a way I can get it to mount using the currently logged in users credentials so that it mounts automatically?
The other issue then is how to I specify that user is allowed read and write access?
I'm able to connect to a networked Windows machine and its shares using the Places -> Network -> Windows network interface, but unable to do so using smbclient at terminal command line. I can see the shares using:
smbclient -L //server -U username
But when issuing the command:
smbclient //server/service -U username
I get:

The share name has spaces, like
lab raid root share
I use 40 to fill in the spaces. This problem must be something fairly simple if I can connect via the Places GUI but not through the command line.
I have a beefy Win Box desktop that i'm using as a media server and i have a home network setup already using windows xp. I had everything running fine and the PC connects flawlessly to my Bravia TV and both my ps3's so i know the network and sharing settings are setup just fine. Anyways i got tired of all the Windows 7 BS and decided i would once again use Ubuntu on my Toshiba netbook. So the question is how in the heck do i get my Ubuntu netbook to connect to the Desktop? I've tried browsing the fourms but either i'm missing something of just a little slow. What "extensions" would i need to get and how would i go about implementing it from there?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have the following setup: An ADSL Router (192.168.4.1) which plugs into my server (that has 2 network cards) Server(eth0-connecting to the ADSL Router) = 192.168.4.2 Server(eth1-connecting to the windows XP PC) = 192.168.4.3 And the windows XP PC = 192.168.4.4 if I delete the entire routing table and add a default route route add default gw 192.168.4.1 dev eth0 I get an error (I can't remember the error, the PC's at work) however if I unplug the cable going from the PC to eth1, I can then successfully add the default route, and I can ping the router, however when I reconnect the cable to the PC and Server... I can still ping the router (from the server) but I cannot ping the PC
if I try and add another route such as: route add -net 192.168.4.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 192.168.4.4 it wont let me add the rule I have a feeling i am doing something really stupid here with the addressing scheme,
I want to connect a laptop running ubuntu 10.04 to a laptop running windows 7 via direct connection in order to transfer files like music, documents, pictures, etc. I have an ethernet cable that I thought I would need in order to do it. Is that even possible?? If so, how would I go about doing that?
Now, I have tried to share the files wirelessly but for some reason when I pick up the workgroup on the ubuntu laptop and enter the password in order to connect to the windows laptop it says my password is wrong, when I know for a fact that it is not. I know I can transfer files with a flash drive and what not but I want to try to get this working.
i installed unix services for windows 3.5 on a windows xp pro box and it installed fine. I configured nfs on the debian box and exported the ip of the client computer and forwarded port 2049 correctly. I followed the instructions for setting up teh nfs client on windows. However whenever i go to tools->map network drive and type in the server-domain-name:/file-address it says it cannot connect?

The network connection To/From XP/UBUNTU via SAMBA Shares works perfectly OK. However, despite scouring all forum information regarding changes to Win98 ENCRYPTION, (Registry change re: DWORD "EnablePlainTextPasswords"), the Win98 PC refuses to connect to UBUNTU. The UBUNTU PC can conect to all the Win98 shared folders OK. I have disabled my Linux Firewall (Firestarter), I have run SMBCLIENT to check the user password for Win98 and it is validated OK. The Win98 error message is ....

I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and its great. However when I connect to the internet at home it shows that the connection has been established but I still cant connect to the internet. My flatmates are all able to connect. However, I am able to connect from work both wirelessly and through an ethernet cable.
