I just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.
Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.

Sometimes I am unable to connect to my WEP network in ubuntu. No matter how many times I try, even restarting, it will not allow me to connect. However if I boot into XP, I can connect to the network. Then when I reboot again and then try in Ubuntu again, it will work.
Router is a Netgear MR814v2

I have 2 computers, one running Windows 7 (and connected to my router wirelessly) and another running the latest Ubuntu Server version and I am just wondering, since I've already got the windows machine to share the internet connection via their LAN connection, how would I get the Ubuntu to use it?

After many hours of searching forums, help files, turning on/off firewalls, etc, I need someone far smarter than myself to help me connect to the above machine. I also looked into Samba and do not understand how to use it. It is installed on my Linux laptop, but I have no idea how to access it. I'm hoping that connecting to my Windows laptop is a fairly simple process.

I'm configuring Ubuntu 10.04 x86 to work with a windows domain with multiple users.
All users need a specific network share mapped.
I am using Likewise Open to join the domain at the moment.
This is what I've got so far.
Code:
This works fine so long as I specify the username and password statically. Is there a way I can get it to mount using the currently logged in users credentials so that it mounts automatically?
The other issue then is how to I specify that user is allowed read and write access?

I'm able to connect to a networked Windows machine and its shares using the Places -> Network -> Windows network interface, but unable to do so using smbclient at terminal command line. I can see the shares using:
smbclient -L //server -U username
But when issuing the command:
smbclient //server/service -U username
I get:
domain=[server] OS=[Windows Server 2003 R2 3790 Service Pack 2] Server=[Windows Server 2003 R2 5.2]
tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME
The share name has spaces, like
lab raid root share
I use 40 to fill in the spaces. This problem must be something fairly simple if I can connect via the Places GUI but not through the command line.

I have a beefy Win Box desktop that i'm using as a media server and i have a home network setup already using windows xp. I had everything running fine and the PC connects flawlessly to my Bravia TV and both my ps3's so i know the network and sharing settings are setup just fine. Anyways i got tired of all the Windows 7 BS and decided i would once again use Ubuntu on my Toshiba netbook. So the question is how in the heck do i get my Ubuntu netbook to connect to the Desktop? I've tried browsing the fourms but either i'm missing something of just a little slow. What "extensions" would i need to get and how would i go about implementing it from there?

This network is still in place, only now I am using ubuntu I haven't got a clue as to how I connect to this network,or if it is even possible at all! how I would go about printing over the network when the other computers on the network are all windows machines.

My friend has a Windows 7 desktop with a large data hard drive which is set up to allow other users to connect to remotely, such that they have read and write access. To set up a connection from another Windows machine, it is as simple as right clicking in the My Computer window and selecting "New Network Connection", then entering the information requested.
The information my friend as given me is:
- The IP Address
- The Hard Drive's Name
- A Username and Password

I just finished bringing up Apache and my own Web server and viewed my new site (all locally). My Windows 7 box and the Fedora box are both connected (physically) to my Netgear DGN2200, so they each access the *real* Internet thru it.What I'd like to do now is access the Linux box/Web site from my Windows 7 box through the DGN2200.

I have the following setup: An ADSL Router (192.168.4.1) which plugs into my server (that has 2 network cards) Server(eth0-connecting to the ADSL Router) = 192.168.4.2 Server(eth1-connecting to the windows XP PC) = 192.168.4.3 And the windows XP PC = 192.168.4.4 if I delete the entire routing table and add a default route route add default gw 192.168.4.1 dev eth0 I get an error (I can't remember the error, the PC's at work) however if I unplug the cable going from the PC to eth1, I can then successfully add the default route, and I can ping the router, however when I reconnect the cable to the PC and Server... I can still ping the router (from the server) but I cannot ping the PC
if I try and add another route such as: route add -net 192.168.4.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 192.168.4.4 it wont let me add the rule I have a feeling i am doing something really stupid here with the addressing scheme,

I want to connect a laptop running ubuntu 10.04 to a laptop running windows 7 via direct connection in order to transfer files like music, documents, pictures, etc. I have an ethernet cable that I thought I would need in order to do it. Is that even possible?? If so, how would I go about doing that?
Now, I have tried to share the files wirelessly but for some reason when I pick up the workgroup on the ubuntu laptop and enter the password in order to connect to the windows laptop it says my password is wrong, when I know for a fact that it is not. I know I can transfer files with a flash drive and what not but I want to try to get this working.

My network comprises three PC's .... Windows XP, Windows 98SE and Ubuntu 9.04 running SAMBA. All PC's are configured WORKGROUP=WORKGROUP. The network connection To/From XP/UBUNTU via SAMBA Shares works perfectly OK. However, despite scouring all forum information regarding changes to Win98 ENCRYPTION, (Registry change re: DWORD "EnablePlainTextPasswords"), the Win98 PC refuses to connect to UBUNTU. The UBUNTU PC can conect to all the Win98 shared folders OK. I have disabled my Linux Firewall (Firestarter), I have run SMBCLIENT to check the user password for Win98 and it is validated OK. The Win98 error message is ....
"\Inspiron 510m is not accessible. The computer or sharename could not be found. Make Sure you typed it correctly and try again."
My samba.conf file is as follows ..... Any help or assistance PLEASE !
#======================= Global Settings =======================
[global]
## Browsing/Identification ###
# Change this to the workgroup/NT-domain name your Samba server will part of
workgroup = workgroup
# server string is the equivalent of the NT Description field

Is it possible to connect remotely to a Windows PC from Ubuntu.I know these people that are constantly receiving Malware on their PC's and when I'm around. The problem is, they are over 200 Miles away, and I won't be in the area until a very long time. Would it be possible to connect to their PC remotely with Ubuntu and remove their viruses via ClamAV?

Im trying to get vnc working over ssh between my windows pc and ubuntu server 11.04 natty over the internet. I have setup everything and got it all running automatically at boot on ubuntu. From within the local network i can use ssvnc and connect from a 2003 server to the ubuntu machine fine. Remotely I can connect and verify password over ssh but after that it tries to start tightvnc and fails. The issues seem to be on the windows side establishing the local connection to the tunnel or something I'm not a guru and I apologize if this is a windows issue but i think its likely that its a networking problem i need to forward or open a port somewhere but i cant find any easy to understand instructions so far in getting this running
This is the output in the putty terminal after running ssvnc slightly modified ive taken out my real username and server address I use user@server:0 as the arguments for ssvnc
Code:
Looking up host "server"
Connecting to server-ip port 22
Server version: SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.8p1 Debian-1ubuntu3
We claim version: SSH-2.0-PuTTY_Release_0.60
Using SSH protocol version 2
[Code]...
Does anyone have any ideas why the connection fails at the point of using the tunnel? is it a problem on the ubuntu or windows side?

I actually have two problems (which may be related). I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on a old Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo La1703 and Windows 7 on a new Dell Inspiron 1545. I only have one broadband internet dongle, so I would like to share the connection (preferably via wireless ad hoc connection, but lan would work too). The dongle is run with a program that comes with it and works fine in both Windows and Ubuntu (except that the Network Manager in Ubuntu doesn't realise that there is an internet connection).
Yesterday morning I managed ONCE to make a wireless ad hoc connection and was able to use the dongle connected on the Windows machine from the Ubuntu one (using WEP security). Since I wasn't able to reproduce this I tried with a Ethernet cable. I plugged it in and and was surfing smoothly the whole evening.
This morning I couldn't connect the computers any more. Neither with nor without cable. When the cable is plugged in the Ubuntu machine recognises a connection, but fails to connect. The windows machine just says "Unidentified Network". I don't know what I did to make the connection disappear or why my laptops refuse to communicate like friends any more. I've been trying the whole day to make them kiss and make up, but they are really stubborn.

I need to connect to a windows vpn now. I do not have time to spend days attempting to get a connection going. All previous posts here, and those coming up in google do not at all describe how to do this. So it begs the question: How to simply connect to a vpn using a Linux client? (Do not link some where that does not contain instructions, actually give a description on how to connect)

I have finally given up trying to get to a printer on my windowsXP pc to work with my linux box and need some assistance. The printer is a hp photosmart c5500 series. My linux box is running lenny and I have installed the cups and samba applications. The linux box is networked to the win pc on a win network using a eth0 link. The link works as I have internet and e-mail connections. I have configured the smb.config file as follows:
[Code].....
I have run the tests in the samba checklist and the connection is apparently working. Pings to the windows pc,, the notebook, and the linux box all return the proper results. The "smbclient -L w.x.y.z" return shows the windows shares that includes the above named printer. When I try to connect the printer using the kde cups wizard or get into the c drive on the windows pc I get the NT_status_access_denied message. I get the same return when I try the "smbclient //username:passwd@wincomputer" I downloaded the appropriate drivers from HP and tried the lpadmin comand and instructions in the Debian mini-Howto but get the return of "lpadmin: No such file or directory" when in fact all the files exist and have correct permissions etc. I have a Ubuntu OS running on a notebook computer (dual boot with windowsXP) with a wireless link to the same router that accesses the printer without a problem. The smb.conf file I am using is based on that I found in my Ubuntu OS but apparently something is different.
