Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting Reliably With DSL Connection
Mar 21, 2011
I have a DSL internet connection. The DSL is just a cable that comes into my house, no routers under my control. For a long time the internet functioned fine in Ubuntu using the default Network Manager. Recently however, my ISP was bought by another ISP, and the service name had to be changed in the DSL settings. In Windows, it connects without any issue whatsoever, only the service name change was required... But in Ubuntu, the first time I connect I get a "Apache: Not Found" page, the next time, I get to the previous ISP's login page, it continues like this for some time until I get it working. I have to try connecting it again and again.
When I asked the customer service, they said that because of the takeover, they have switched servers. But they said, it should work properly in Windows, and they were clueless about Ubuntu. Is there anything I can do to solve this issue?

I just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.
Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.

The problem that I have been struggling with is while connecting to VPN server, I can't connect to other sites.
I am on 11.04, but this have been happening on 10.10 as well.
On Win7, I was able to browse the VPN and the other sites at the same time without any issue.
I also tried by checking ON the "Use this connection only for resources on its network" option (under IPv4 settings tab) but doing that is allowing me to browse all sites except the VPN site. The method that I am using is "Automatic (VPN)".
Need your help to solve this issue.

My sons Ubuntu installation on his computer hasn't showed the Network Connections Icon in the Panel for a long time. This weekend everything was working fine and we needed to go away for the weekend and unhooked the router. When we came back the computer wouldn't connect back up to the internet.
How can I fix the Wired Connections Icon on the Panel and get the Auto Connect to work again?

I am using UBUNTU 9.04 on a HP mini notebook. I pratically never had problem connecting wireless with my netbook, expecially with this connection at home. Until yesterday. There were some line problems, that have been solved after some hours. Then I was able again to connect.
I didnt do nothing on the netbook. After 2 hours, connection gone. Now, even if other laptops are wonderfully connected (to the same line), mine has a dramatically slow connection (in the sense that is able to open just the first page of google if I am lucky) or no connection at all (even if the signal looks good on the network panel.
I tryed the help for wireless troubleshooting, checked for device recognition. Putting in terminal sudo lshw -C network Says disabled. But the device of the wireless on my pc is on, and it's also enabled in its panel.

I have a Netgear DG834 ADSL router (v3) which I have used for a couple of years. Prior to that I had a v2 of the same router, but upgraded for the one that supports ADSL 2+ (here in the UK).
Recently I have been having problems with the connection often being dropped, and when I access 192.168.0.1 for the router admin page, when it is not working I get no IP address listed for that of the ISP's server, and sometimes as well the upstream and downstream speeds are listed as 0 kbps.
Usually this was resolved by rebooting the router.
However, for the last couple of days, when using Ubuntu 9.04, the page of the router at 192.168.0.1 will not load. I have tried numerous different browsers, and none of them will give the router admin page.
When I tried booting from a live CD of Fedora 13, the router admin page came up just fine, no problems (although still not getting a proper connection to the Internet).
I was going to try to use the older router I had, but so far, as I cannot access the router admin page in Ubuntu, I have not done so (not had the time, and now I am at work posting this).
So there must be a problem in Ubuntu that is preventing it showing the router's admin page. The Network connection details show that the router has given the PC an IP address of 192.168.0.6 and the DNS servers are listed, so I know that Ubuntu is talking to the router, but it is not allowing me to access its settings in any way.

Just had an issue crop up where connecting wired network seems to stop wireless connections from getting an IP (happens on multiple networks both while the cable is plugged in and once it's been unplugged; also persists across reboots). Machine is a Dell Latitude 2120n with UnionFS running. Connection was working fine prior to the wired connection

sometimes our ADSL connection gives up and we are left without internet connection for days until the problem gets fixed. I mean by this problem along the phone line. It affects all machines that connect to the internet through a Netgear WIFI Modem Router. I recently tried an alternative when this happens is to use a USB Huawei Mobile Broadband UMTS connection which works when you insert it in 1 laptop. Is there a way i could get the Netgear WIFI modem router to connect on that usb stick or PC that is online on that usb stick and give access to other machines that will want to connect to the web ?

Figured out a straight shot at connecting to the Internet in Fedora 15. Follow these commands.
1.)****** SWITCH TO ROOT USER if you don't have privileges*******
2.) cd /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
3.) rm ifcfg-XXXXX (DO NOT REMOVE THE IFCFG-LO)
4.) system-config-network
-> Once in this screen, press the enter key on "Device configuration"
-> Configure your network statically. ( I did the following.) Name: leave as default Device: Leave as default DESELECT "Use DHCP" Set Static IP as 192.168.2.117 (or 192.168.1.117) Set NetMask as 255.255.255.0 Set "Default Gateway IP" AND "Primary DNS Server" to 192.168.2.1 (or 192.168.1.1)
[Code]..

I have two computers that have a direct ethernet wire between them. The interface is set to a static ip address on each side, and under control of the NetworkManager.
About 1/10 the time the interface does not start. The messages log file will show:
Jun 22 13:01:22 owl10 NetworkManager[601]: <info> (p6p1): carrier is OFF
Jun 22 13:01:22 owl10 NetworkManager[601]: <info> (p6p1): new Ethernet device (driver: 'r8169' ifindex: 2)
Jun 22 13:01:22 owl10 NetworkManager[601]: <info> (p6p1): exported as /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/Devices/0
[Code].....
So, I imagine there is a race condition where both boxes wait for the other to start the interface.
My question: Is there anyway to force NetworkManager to bring up an interface even if there is no Carrier?
BTW, this problem started recently on Fedora 13 after some upgrades. We upgraded to the latest Fedora 15 to try and solve it, and it now appears more often than it did on Fedora 13.

When ever i run ssh -p <port> <user>@<remote IP>, i get a connection has timed out error. (i use the -p <port> part because i'm using a custom port). does anyone know what could be causing this? i know of a few *possible* problems, but i don't know how to test them all.
- I am on the same network as the server (I'm trying to test using remote IP to make sure it works before i go out an try it somewhere else)
-The router could be blocking it (i'm using linksys)
-IPtables may not be set up right (i think it is though. the only thing i've run is "sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport ssh -j ACCEPT". I have changed the port for the server since then. maybe i have to restart it or something for it to recognise the change? I know very little about IPtables though).
-maybe i have to change something in my client or server config files? (the only config file i've changed is the sshd_config file on the seerver, and that was to change the port to my custom port).
thats all i can think of for now. It may be none of those. I do have the sshd_config and port forwarding in my router set to the same port, so thats good.

I have a Cisco Switch that is connected to my computer via serial. I simply want to configure the switch via the serial connection from within a terminal. I edited the /etc/inittab to include agetty for ttyS2 and ttyS3. The switch is hooked up to one of the two.
I ran
Code:
init q
to re-read the inittab
Ran a
Code:
ps -ef
and I can see the two agettys I also have run a dmesg to confirm that my computer has detected ttyS terminals. The requirements for the cisco switch connection are the following:
8 data bits
no parity
1 stop bit
[code]....
How do I connect to /dev/ttyS2 or /dev/ttyS3?
I've tried
Code:
agetty -8 115200 ttyS2 vt100
but it just hangs.

As a random thought I purged the firmware-realtek package and rebooted. Ethernet works fine now??
Fresh Jessie installed this morning with KDE. Wired worked fine during installation and initial boot. Reboot after package installation and only wireless is working right now. I did install the realtek firmware as part of my normal package list.
This is /var/log/syslog when it stopped working, and hasn't reconnected since. Cable is fine as it was working perfectly with a live Ubuntu shortly before I installed the system with Debian.

I can't get HDMI sound reliably when using Ubuntu. The strange thing is, if I repeatedly reboot the computer, eventually the sound will work. This can take anything up to 10 reboots. Once working, it will keep on working as long as the machine is not rebooted or shut down. HDMI sound works fine under Windows.
aplay -l will only list the Intel (analogue and S/PDIF) hardware, not the Nvidia, even when it is working. Selecting between analogue and digital output under Sound Preferences has no effect on the HDMI either way.

I've been having problems connecting to my MSN (Hotmail) account with Empathy. Empathy is in my start-up applications, but every time I start my PC MSN is disconnected. I have to run "killall telepathy-butterfly" then disable and re-enable the MSN account in Empathy to get it working again.I read today in another forum post that you can remove telepathy-butterfly. So I've tried that. Now I can't get it to connect to my MSN account at all.
I've tried using the "HTTP method" and not, restarting Empathy, recreating the account, but whenever it connects it immediately disconnects and now says "Disconnected - Connection has been replaced by a new connection using the same resource"I only have one MSN account in Empathy, although I also use it for Google Talk, Facebook, Yahoo!, and People Nearby.Any ideas how I can get MSN reliably working every time without interference?

I decided to try kubuntu after reading over the webs. I got lastest 10.04 release of kubuntu installed (downloaded yesterday).
So far i dont seem to get any mediaplayer to work correctly with video files (avi's and Video_ts.ifo's). I've tried:
- built in Dragon
- Vlc
- mplayer and kmplayer/smplayer
- xine
The result is as follows
- Dragon plays only Dvd's "vob" files but cannot switch audio or subtitles
- vlc wont open ANYTHING at all
- mplayer crashes on anything as well
- xine will play some videos as dragon but wont play vob files (no "muxer")
At first i installed recommended stuff to play mp3's. When i tried to watch films or dvd's i couldnt do it with Dragon so i tried to install so advertised VLC. I did, and when i open ANY file in VLC, it closes itself. Just closes. Or on rare occasions (when opening some of dvd's files) it just opens a big black screen and reverts to starting small state w/o screen or file opened. I can even sometimes see the first picture from the video blink before it closes. I couldnt get ANY file to play on VLC not even an mp3...
I then installed some packages that told they contain codecs to play alot of formats, and package for "encoded dvd's" - nothing.
After that i've seen that now i can play some videos (avi's and stuff) and even DVD's with built in Dragon video player, but dragon cannot understand subtitles or different audio streams. I tried mplayer and Xine with no luck as well.
Now since its not a problem of one player, but i cannot get to play video_ts.ifo files at all and cannot get vlc and mplayer to play anything at all, there must be something i am doing wrong.

I recently installed Lubuntu 11.04 on my aunt's old computer (Sony PCV-LX800); I had it running Ubuntu for a few years but the latest releases are too much for it to bear. Anyway, a while back I installed a DVD-ROM drive in her computer in order to play DVD movies. It plays CDs and non-commercial DVDs fine, but with the commercial DVDs, it doesn't work 80% of the time. The 20% it does work, everything is fine.
I've installed all the necessary packages with every new release. Currently using the following: libdvdcss, libdvdnav4, and libdvdread4 (via the Medibuntu repository). Here's some info from this system while trying to play the DVD LotR: Return of the King Extended Edition:
Code:
gloria@gloria-PCV-LX800-U:~$ mplayer dvd://1

I'm having trouble getting this computer to boot up a lot of the time. It's an older AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+. Motherboard is (apparently, I'm just copying from the Sysinfo app) AMD K8 Athlon64 Opteron. I have Ubuntu Jaunty and Windows XP installed, but I don't know how relevant that is. When booting, it will simply stop around the stage where it detects the HDD and DVD drive, or right after. The last thing I see is the line with the DVD drive being found. I can't get into the BIOS, it does not make it that far before freezing.
If I keep rebooting, sometimes it will boot normally allowing me to access BIOS settings or make it to GRUB and start up the OS. If I do manage to boot the computer successfully, it is extremely stable. I often go months without a reboot. The problem is it's nice to be able to reboot once in a while without fear of the computer crossing over into the land of the dead. I can't figure out what's wrong, but the problem seems to be very early in the booting stage.

I've just installed openSUSE 11.3 for the first time on a Dell E1505 notebook and am having problems connecting to my home wireless network. Using the Network Manager I've been able to find my home network and connect after entering the network password. After a minute or two the wireless network is still shown as active but their is no connection (websites will not load).
I'm completely new to Linux so I have almost no clue what could be causing this. I have tried connecting the notebook hardwired (Ethernet) to the router and get a perfect connection if that information helps any.
