Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting To Networked Windows Hard Drive

Jun 14, 2010

My friend has a Windows 7 desktop with a large data hard drive which is set up to allow other users to connect to remotely, such that they have read and write access. To set up a connection from another Windows machine, it is as simple as right clicking in the My Computer window and selecting "New Network Connection", then entering the information requested.

The information my friend as given me is:
- The IP Address
- The Hard Drive's Name
- A Username and Password

Software :: Backup Of Data To Both Networked Desktop And USB Hard Drive?

Mar 2, 2010

I am under orders from She who must be obeyed that I must fully backup her data as she had a loss of information due to a hard drive failure.Presently I am having her make available her info as shared documents on her XP system and I am copying this data over to my Ubuntu (Karmic) desktop. I would also like to have a USB Hard Drive save the information in order that I can safely store this away from a live system.

So far things are working not too bad but She wishes to have all her backup that was available on DVDs and salvaged from posted material assembled as one complete resource. I can with some effort put this into some semblance of order but do not feel like doing the work twice.I would like some method of easily copying / transferring data to the external HD. Additionally I would like to be able to update data daily and be able to with minimal effort have this synced onto the external HD.

Ubuntu Networking :: Mounting Shared Drive On Networked Machine [wubi]

On my laptop I am running a dual boot system with Windows Vista and using wubi install, Ubuntu 9.10.

In Windows, I am able to wirelessly connect to the shared folder and access the music folder and the media downloads folder on my Desktop Ubuntu machine. All is good.

When I boot in Ubuntu, I am unable to connect to the shared folder under Places > Network I can negotiate to the MSHOME (the name of my work group). Once selected I get the error Failed to retrieve Shared List from server error message.

Ubuntu :: Connecting To A Networked Mysql Daemon

Dec 6, 2010

I have installed Tomcat on one machine and MySQL on another. When I run tomcat on the same machine as Mysql and use 'localhost' in the jdbc url, I have no problem accessing mysql through jdbc. So my problem is accessing a remote mysql instance. I have granted privileges in the following way from the MySQL prompt:GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON mydatabase.* TO myusername @192.168.0.103 IDENTIFIED BY 'mypassword';

FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
Still I get :
com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.MySQLSyntaxErrorEx ception: Access denied for user 'myusername'@'192.168.0.103' to database 'mydatabase'
sun.reflect.NativeConstructorAccessorImpl.newInsta nce0(Native Method)
sun.reflect.NativeConstructorAccessorImpl.newInsta nce(NativeConstructorAccessorImpl.java:57)
[Code]....

I have no idea whether this is a problem at the operating system level i.e. allowing networked hosts, or whether it is something to do with MySQL. I have commented out bindaddress and, on this version, there is no 'skip-networking' line to comment out.

Ubuntu :: Wireless And External Hard Drive Not Connecting

Aug 17, 2010

I am running the latest Ubuntu on a partition with windows 7 as my main OS. I got my wireless drivers installed and it seems to pick up on all the wireless networks, whenever i try to connect to mine it tires and then fails and asks for the password again, even though its definatly the right password for my wireless.

I am also having trouble connecting to my external hard drive, i am completely new with Linux and would appreshiate -retard proof- tutorials if you need me to run anything, and such. Its fully updated and drivers are up to date (apparently) so i cant understand what is wrong.

Hardware :: Test Integrity Of External Hard Drive / Without Removing It And Connecting With SATA To Motherboard?

Jul 28, 2009

I have a seagate SATA hard drive that was running a mythtv distro. It had 3 partitions, EXT3, swap, and XFS. I started having I/O errors on boot and saw error messages on both the EXT3 and the XFS partitions. I also heard some clunking sounds on the drive when it was reading, so I thought hell, the drive is dead.

I have since replaced the drive and everything is back up and running on the replacement drive. I thought hell, the seagate drive is toast, but I just want to verify it with some sort of tool. I have the hard drive in a Vantec NexStar external hard drive case (SATA->USB) and found there was a tool called badblocks. Ran badblocks on it, which ran for 24ish hours and found no bad blocks. I also didn't notice any clunking sounds while it was running.

I ran
Code:
badblocks -n -v /dev/sdb
Is badblocks a proper test to run on external hard drives or was I just wasting my time? Is there any way that I can really test it without removing it and connecting it with SATA to the motherboard?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 In A Second Partition Of The Hard Drive - Windows XP And Windows 7

Oct 24, 2010

I have Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows XP running each one in a partition of two different hard drives. I want to install Windows 7 in a second partition of the hard drive where Ubuntu is running. Windows 7 did not see the hard drive where Ubuntu is running. So I understand that I need to format the partition where Ubuntu is running, install Windows 7 and later on Ubuntu 10.04 which will create the boot for the three systems. But I want to backup Ubuntu's installation, and after installing Windows 7, install the backup. So I will need to add the file for the dual booting. How can I do it? Is it there any piece of software that could create the three booting option that I need?

Ubuntu :: File Preview In Nautilus On 11.04 On Networked Home Drive

Aug 2, 2011

We have recently upgraded to ubuntu 11.04 64bit from 10.04 and 10.10 in a networked office in which our home directories are mounted on a server raid array. Ubuntu considers that the home directory is a local drive rather than on a networkWe have noticed that file preview are very very slow in 11.04 for pdf's and pictures in nautilus, causing a lag of around 10 seconds for each file. This can cause a problem for folders which hold multiple files which can be previewed. Preview worked fine in previous versions of ubuntu on the same machine, with the same network setup. Previewing of actual local files works faster, but is slower on 11.04, than previous versions.

Both the 10.10 and 11.04 systems are up to date with available updates (11.04 - 2.32.2.1 and 2.30.1 on ubuntu 10)Obviously, there is a work around for this problem - turn off preview. But, it would be nice to turn it on as its a useful feature.

Hardware :: Brother DCP-9010CN Prints Via USB Networked Only From Windows?

Jul 12, 2011

Yesterday I bought the DCP-9010CN printer. When connecting it to a network it replies to pings, and its web-interface is perfectly accessible. Network printing is also possible from a Windows XP computer, but from a Linux box I can only use the printer via its USB connection.

Following Brother's installation instructions I got stuck after changing the USB configuration to the network configuration.

Attached is a more detailed report of my efforts. The attached file consists of several numbered sections, section 6, near line 350 describes my experiences when configuring the printer for USB printing and then for network printing.

Ubuntu :: How To Image A Windows Hard Drive

Apr 30, 2010

I have an unused laptop computer with an WindowsXP installation lying around. I decided to use this computer with Ubuntu for the next few months but it is absolutely crucial to preserve the current WindowsXP state somehow. Is there a safe way to "conserve" that very Windows installation as an image so I can recopy it later on? I'd like to clean out the computer completely to install Ubuntu afterwards. After using Ubuntu I want to install the old WindowsXP again as it was before. Is that even possible? Power on and XP boots as before? I mean driver, accounts, passwords etc? What would you recommend?

Ubuntu :: Windows Hard Drive Won't Mount / What To Do?

Windows XP Laptop hard drive is stuck in a hibernated mode. Will not let me access it through Windows, period.

I loaded Ubuntu Live on the suggestion of a coworker in order to retrieve my important files by hooking up the Windows HD through a USB adapter (Inland).

Ubuntu recognizes the 160GB HD, but refuses to mount the drive because "Windows is Hibernated." I Know my disk is hibernated, I need a way to get my important files from the drive...

I know very little abount Ubuntu so please keep that in mind with your gracious replies.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting To NAS - Cannot See My Synology NAS Drive On My Network

Jun 20, 2011

Having become so frustrated With the many bugs in 11.04 I have stepped backward and instead installed Ubuntu 10.10 onto my Dell laptop. Until now I have been very pleased, as nearly everything has worked well, straight out of the box. So, just as I thought I was home and dry I have noticed that I cannot see my Synology NAS drive on my network. This is doubly frustrating because my other PC, also running 10.10, has suddenly lost it's ability to see the NAS drive too. Throughout last week I used the NAS in conjunction with my Ubuntu PC without a hitch but now it's gone. The NAS is visible to both Windows and Macs it's just the Ubuntu machines that cannot use it. It is also vaguely annoying knowing that the NAS itself uses a Linux OS or maybe that could be a clue to what's wrong.

As things stand my Apple Macs can see each other, they see the Windows box, see the NAS and see the shared folders on the Ubuntu machines. The Windows machines see the Macs, each other, the NAS and the Linux shared folders. The Ubuntu machines only see the Apple Mac shares, no Windows and no other Ubuntu shared folder nor the NAS.

It is curious because the little program Avahi Zero Conf Browser can see absolutely everything on my network yet the Ubuntu GUI is proving to be the most difficult thing to network using anything other than than a web browser. Is there a concise definitive reason why Linux (Ubuntu) is so infernally difficult to network? I am not very experienced with Linux or the terminal but was hoping that this system might by now have become a little more user friendly for ordinary people.

Could there also have been something in a recent OS update that has killed off my PC running Ubuntu's ability to see the NAS where previously there has been no problem.

Ubuntu :: Non-ntfs Hard-drive - Install Windows?

Apr 18, 2011

Some time ago I reformatted my hard drive to just run Ubuntu. Now I need to install Windows XP but when I put in the install disk it says it can't find a hard drive. I'm guessing this is because the hard drive is formatted to a Linux-specific ext4/extended/linux-swap set-up. The ext4 partition is 71GB and only uses 13GB. I have 57GB free. I can see all this in Gparted but how do I now split that ext4 up and free some space for ntfs partition for Windows? Indeed is this what I should be doing? Obviously I can't unmount the ext4 bit whilst in Ubuntu.

Ultimately I want to do a complete reformat of the hard disk and just install Windows XP for the time being (I'm handing the laptop in for a hardware service).

Hardware :: Windows 7 Killed Hard Drive?

Mar 6, 2010

EDIT : Solved? (Sorry if this is the location for this thread or if someone else already made a thread about this but I tried Googling this ever since it happened with no relevant results IMO so yea. Also sorry if this post sounds trollish / ect. but the fact that I lost the original version of this post due to the website logging me out kinda changed my attitude ATM... Besides, this one is shorter :/)

About a week ago (2/28/10) I went to install Windows 7 (CURSE YOU MICROSOFT!!!) and my damn comp froze during the formating process. So I then went ahead and shut down my comp like an idiot and tried rebooting with the install disk for it to only show the Windows 7 startup animation screen When booting without the disk all I get is some sort of Grub installation with no bootlist Afterwards I went ahead and booted my Fedora 12 LXDE Live-CD and ran Gparted, which tells me that there are 156 hard drives (or Partitions?) on my comp, labeled /dev/sda, /dev/sda100, /dev/sda101 - /dev/sda255 most with just unpartitioned space and every third hard drive / partition containing an EXT4 partition consisting of around 148.32GB of space...

All the file browsers I've tried using (LXDE's pcmanfm, GNOME's Nautilus, and Windows XP's Explorer (yea, makes no sense why if 99.999% of the partitions were Linux partitions...)) do not even seem to acknowledge it's existence, let alone allow access to whatever partitions might have survived the event.

So my Question[s] is this : Can my files be restored? If so then How? If not then how am I supposed to format my Hard drive and get the damn thing working correctly? (since Gparted thinks my single hard drive = 156 hard drives >_>)

Anyhow, theres no rush as I've been running off of Live-CD for the past week or so but in any case it would be nice if I could get my files back or at least have a working hard drive to use if all is lost Trying to get uncertainty out of the equation - Should I pull teh plug?
