Just had an issue crop up where connecting wired network seems to stop wireless connections from getting an IP (happens on multiple networks both while the cable is plugged in and once it's been unplugged; also persists across reboots). Machine is a Dell Latitude 2120n with UnionFS running. Connection was working fine prior to the wired connection

I have the latest version of ubuntu on an HP dv4000 laptop fully updated. wireless worked out of the box. but the wired connection wont start. Problem is with the ubuntu install not the network. But i dont know how to configure it to work.

View 9 Replies View RelatedRunning Ubuntu 10.10 on a Dell 710m. Fresh install of OS yesterday. Initially I had wired connection but no wireless. So I started chasing threads & trying different downloads & commands [WITHOUT KNOWING essentially what I was doing; throw your rocks at me HERE] & now I have lost the wired connection also.
Also:
[a] If I go into System > Administration > Additional Drivers, I get "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system."
[b] As far as being able to copy a downloaded driver [using a working M$oft machine with net connection] onto an SD card & transferring that driver to the Dell laptop, I have tried formatting 3 different SD cards with the Dell, & each time I come up with various failure errors--& I have no idea why something as simple as formatting an SD card isn't working.
My current network setup at home is all wired, and that's worked for me so far. Now I want to set up a wireless connection on my Linux box that I can connect to with both my laptop and my Nintendo DS. I'd like to be able to host a wireless network from the Linux box, connect to it with some other wireless device, and have the wireless device communicate with the router, the internet, and other computers on the wired network. I have the wired network set up (statically configured) as eth0. Other network adapters present on the system are eth1 (not in use) and wlan0, wlan1, and wlan2 (identical cards, remnants from the last time I experimented with wireless).
So I guess my question comes in two parts:
1) How do I set up wlan0 such that it can host? Is Ad-hoc mode okay for this, or do I need to set it up in Master mode?
2) How do I forward connections between the wireless net and the router?
Note that I will be using WEP, as it is all that the NDS supports. I'd like to set up MAC filtering as well, but not until after I get something that works.
in short : installed 9.10 on a dell inspiron 600m which has a broadcom bcm4401 ethernet and an intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B mini PCI. At this point, i'm not too picky about which one works (meaning neither of them currently work). nm-tool seems to pick up on both : the broadcom (eth0) is using the b44 driver, State is unavailable; the intel (eth1) is using the ipw2100 driver, it's State is disconnected.
i have encryption turned off, and the wireless sees a number of AP's (including mine).
i'm jumping off the good ship m$ and determined to make this work!
I just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.
Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.
An half year ago i reinstalled ubuntu 10.04, there both were no wired and no wireless connections.I have found drivers and it's everything ok with wireless, but i can't connect through LAN.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have never seen this before but to connect to the internet either wired or wireless I have to connect to a broadband connection as well. I am currently using wireless; I connect to ISP with wireless but in order to access the internet I have connect to the wireless connection through my broadband connection(This is where I enter a user name and password.). I'm not sure why this is, I have always just plugged an Ethernet cable in and the computer just knew I guess.
I am using ubuntu-10.04-netbook-i386.iso that I had put onto a USB drive. It booted fine, but when I tried accessing the internet I couldn't. I was able to connect to the ISP, but I couldn't find any settings for a broadband connection. My computer is a Acer Aspire One Netbook 250

Figured out a straight shot at connecting to the Internet in Fedora 15. Follow these commands.
1.)****** SWITCH TO ROOT USER if you don't have privileges*******
2.) cd /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
3.) rm ifcfg-XXXXX (DO NOT REMOVE THE IFCFG-LO)
4.) system-config-network
-> Once in this screen, press the enter key on "Device configuration"
-> Configure your network statically. ( I did the following.) Name: leave as default Device: Leave as default DESELECT "Use DHCP" Set Static IP as 192.168.2.117 (or 192.168.1.117) Set NetMask as 255.255.255.0 Set "Default Gateway IP" AND "Primary DNS Server" to 192.168.2.1 (or 192.168.1.1)

I recently purchased an Acer Aspire 1410 notebook running Windows 7 home edition. I installed Ubuntu 2.3 and my wireless and network LAN connection is not working. I saw on a link in this forum, someone was having similar problem. However, when i tried the solution that was recommended/suggested to the person, it did not work for me.

I have an old Compaq Presario v2000 that recently had Ubuntu 10.04 installed on it. The wired internet worked when it was installed, but the wireless didn't. I tried to download the drivers for it and it failed everytime. I did an update thinking that the update might fix the wireless, but it didn't, it actually made my wired connection stop working. So now I have a newly installed OS on the laptop, and I can't do anything on it because there is no way to get any internet.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI remember that I did configure my desktop PC for wired and wireless connections since openSUSE 11.2, 11.3 and 11.4. Currently I have openSUSE11.4 x86_64 KDE. Today I happen to notice that the icon for NetworkManager in the taskbar has been replaced with a red X. I discovered that Network Manager only shows VPN tab, whereas Wired and Wireless tabs are greyed out. The strange thing is I still have Internet connection with the CAT5 cable being plugged in. I can still configure wired and wireless connections via YAST but I cannot fix Network Manager settings.

I reinstalled Ubuntu and the problem persists.
Why is wireless taking priority from the wired connection? I should not have to disable wireless just to have the wired connection connect.

After viewing another post I've provided the output of "sudo lshw -C network" command below (I've blocked out my MAC address on purpose). It appears that the lan card is not even being recognized. The card is enabled in bios (I've checked twice). I don't get it, the wireless worked fine before I did a fresh install of 10.04LTS. I can't use wireless because I have the b43 driver firmware issue that I can't resolve unless I get my wired connection working.

For the last 3 or so hours I have been trying in vain to simply give my mobile phone wifi internet access from my netbook. I have tried to google and follow some howto's and guides, but they're either too old or don't explain it very well. I'm fairly new to use of Linux and of wireless networks, but can handle setting them up in Windows. So basically, having said that, I believe I mostly understand how this whole thing is supposed to work theoretically but I just feel as though I lack the experience to jump the wireless hurdle AND the Linux hurdle at the same time. I have provided some information below.
- Setup is based on Lucid netbook remix install with a Maverick kernel update due to lack of driver support for wireless NIC - I can confirm wireless does work properly for connection purposes
- I followed [URL] and kind of followed [URL however I couldn't even tell how to run Network Manager, even though Synaptic tells me it is installed
- When I ran into problems trying to install ipmasq I found [URL] and followed what the response told me to which allowed me to restart the dnsmasq and the dhcp3-server at least
- I have restarted the entire netbook several times throughout the process.
I'm using Archlinux with NetworkManager to connect to the internet. When I'm in my room, I've an ethernet cable and still receive the wireless signal.Sometimes (like when we have a power cut, somebody is rebooting the router or simply something wrong with the provider), I'm disconnected during a few seconds, NetworkManager ask me again the password of the wireless (even if it remembers it), and then I'm ok.But when I'm not in front of my computer, while I haven't push the button "ok", it doesn't connect, even with the wired connection.That's not very normal in my opinion as there is supposed to have two different and independent connection. No ?
I intent to install an ssh server on my computer but if I cannot access it every time there is a problem that won't be very useful.
I upgraded to 10.10 from 10.04. I have the problem with connecting to a wired connection at my workplace. It was connecting earlier on 10.04 and now it doesnt. Laptop make is Hp and model number is 8530W.

The only guide I found regarding this (I must admit, I didn't have much time to put into research), was dating back to 2005, and although doable, seemed somewhat confusing. 1.) I can see wireless networks only after I am connected to the router through wired ! I guess its some thing to do with me activating ifup and ifdown, when my wired connection stopped working as i was trying to install wireless drivers.
2.) Even when I see wireless networks, i cannot connect to any of them.
I tried various things for a whole day trying to fix it and i doubt if i screwed up some thing that was running good.

I have not been able to get an internet connection wired or wireless on my laptop. I downloaded the drivers from Acer's website and tried installing them using ndiswrapper. Still no luck.
I've been running Ubuntu 10.10 on my Dell Vostro 1500 for awhile, one morning I tried to get online & no networks would show up. I tried plugging in my ethernet cable & still nothing. Just the two lights by the plug stay lit up. If I boot into Puppy Linux the wireless works just fine. I was using the B43 driver before I had problems, then when I was trying to get it to work I accidentally deleted the driver. I cannot figure out how to get my internet working again in Ubuntu. I don't want to be stuck using Puppy Linux forever! I don't really know many commands, normally just search online how to fix problems, but it's pretty hard to do when I have to boot back & forth between operating systems to find things to try.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm fairly sure that this is an Ubuntu issue, as I've tried this on my windows computer with success.I'm running a minecraft server on my laptop, previously over a wireless connection but the data rates were too slow. On a wired connection, however, the server starts up and runs like normal but the port is not open when accessing from the network's public IP. I tested this with canyouseeme(.)org. I can get to it from other computers within the network by using a local IP, which to me seems a little strange as it seems to indicate that the port is open on the PC but somewhere in the router it gets confused due to being wired(?). Obviously I've forwarded the ports on the router (BTHomehub 2.0) with both TCP and UCP (it worked over wireless!). Any suggestions as to what might be causing this? I'm stumped.
