Networking :: Ubuntu 9.04 SAMBA Not Connecting To Windows 98 Error Saying Inspiron 510m Is Not Accessible, The Computer Or Sharename Could Not Be Found?
Jul 15, 2009
My network comprises three PC's .... Windows XP, Windows 98SE and Ubuntu 9.04 running SAMBA. All PC's are configured WORKGROUP=WORKGROUP. The network connection To/From XP/UBUNTU via SAMBA Shares works perfectly OK. However, despite scouring all forum information regarding changes to Win98 ENCRYPTION, (Registry change re: DWORD "EnablePlainTextPasswords"), the Win98 PC refuses to connect to UBUNTU. The UBUNTU PC can conect to all the Win98 shared folders OK. I have disabled my Linux Firewall (Firestarter), I have run SMBCLIENT to check the user password for Win98 and it is validated OK. The Win98 error message is ....
"\Inspiron 510m is not accessible. The computer or sharename could not be found. Make Sure you typed it correctly and try again."
My samba.conf file is as follows ..... Any help or assistance PLEASE !
#======================= Global Settings =======================

# Change this to the workgroup/NT-domain name your Samba server will part of
workgroup = workgroup

We have an existing Windows 2000 network that I am trying to add an Ubuntu 8.04 server to. I have put links into the windows domain DFS to the linux machine's samba shares.
The shares work fine for local users that are physically on the same network (192.168.0.X). Remote users from other offices or dialing in with a vpn client can not access the these particular folders off the DFS. However, they can map them directly from the ubuntu server.

I have Linux installed on one machine with samba running and a second machine running XP. They are going through my router and I am using the same username/passwords for both machines and I have even gone to the point of allowing access to everyone for the share I created and the worgroup in samba is MSHOME just like my XP machine. When I view (or search) my workgroup computers my Linux machine shows up and so do the shares I created but when I try to open them I just get a message that permission is denied and I may not have permission to use this resource. I even tried setting access to the shared folder to 777 but still I can't open this share. Has anyone got any idea of why this is?

I'm able to connect to a networked Windows machine and its shares using the Places -> Network -> Windows network interface, but unable to do so using smbclient at terminal command line. I can see the shares using:
smbclient -L //server -U username
But when issuing the command:
smbclient //server/service -U username
I get:
domain=[server] OS=[Windows Server 2003 R2 3790 Service Pack 2] Server=[Windows Server 2003 R2 5.2]
tree connect failed: NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME
The share name has spaces, like
lab raid root share
I use 40 to fill in the spaces. This problem must be something fairly simple if I can connect via the Places GUI but not through the command line.

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 and have 5 shares that I have setup for Samba (assume names of share1, ..., share5). I find that shares(2,3,4) are accessible from my MS Windows system, but the share1 and share5 are listed but Windows gives an error accessing them that I may not have permissions.I have reviewed the sharesve the same owner, group, and permissions.Is this a known Samba bug or configuration issue? I have gone through the smb.conf file multiple times as well as examining the directories and do not see what the issue might be.

I am trying to create a Samba share on Ubuntu so that I can see it on my Windows computer but have had nothing but trouble. I've tried everything that I could find in Google but the best I can get is that my Ubuntu computer shows up as Unknown device on my Windows computer. Unfortunately, my Windows computer belongs to my company or I would just switch to Ubuntu altogether. I have posted a couple of screenshots of what I see in Windows, my GParted partitions, and the options that I have enabled for the folder I am trying to share. Below are my fstab and my samba files from Ubuntu. I am sure that this is just some rookie mistake as I am new to Ubuntu. It certainly seems that this should be easy, but I just can't get it.

I have Samba 3.5.3-61 running on a Fedora Core 13 system. I created a share that is browseable to all systems, and I made sure to create a user account via the smbpasswd utility. When I try to connect to the server from a Windows XP system, I am able to enter the appropriate sharename as well as the username and password.

I have setup Samba shares on my Ubuntu 10.10 and assigned different different username and password combination for each share.
The sharing works perfectly fine on all the Windows machines but it does not work on OSX. When I try to connect using OSX, it ends up showing waiting icon (screenshot attached) after entering username and password. (It asks for the login details after selecting the share from the list)

I would like to know if there is a fairly easy "How To" for setting up my home network. I have 2 XP SP3 computers and 2 Linux with ver. 9.10. The XP boxes can see each other and share files and folders. I can see from an XP box one of the Ubuntu machines, but can't access any of the files or folders.
I get the following when I try: \Lstoragemusic is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found.

I want to have my Fedora 10 computer act as file storage and access it from my Windows computers.
Details:
Fedora 10 box is fully functional and connects to the internet using a wireless card to my Linksys 54G router. I've configured the smb.conf file to workgroup MSHOME, and assigned it an IP of 192.168.1.150. I've also set it to turn on smb at boot. Windows XP Home is hard wired to the same router with the standard Workgroup of MSHOME. Windows is set to obtain IP and DNS automatically. There's another Windows XP Home system that's also wireless on MSHOME that I can interact with fine from the main Windows comp. Ping results to 192.168.1.150 results in Request timed out.

Update: I found the name of my software that came with keyboard: Cubase Ai4
How can I connect usb-piano to my computer?
I recently bought a yamaha KX8 keyboard. It does not, however, have any built in speakers, but must be connected to something in order to play.
It come with a USB cord and some weird windows software, that must be running in order for the keyboard to make any sound. Now that software seems VERY complicated. I merely want to play the "piano" instrument.
I was wandering if there is some kind of SIMPLER software (maybe open source) that will allow me to connect this keyboard to either windows or linux os?

I need to be able to log into (with X enabled) my home computer (running OpenSuse 11.4) from my work computer(running Windows XP). I was originally going to setup ssh on my home computer but then realized that I wouldn't be able to get my desktop this way.At work, we use windows remote desktop connection to log into other computers within our network, but I'm planning on asking my manager if I'm allowed to login to my home computer.If he accepts, I need a method to actually make it happen.I looked at FreeNX which seemed awesome but it doesn't seem to have windows support. To an extent that I would like to only allow my work IP to be allowed to even try an login.The bridge to cross here is the fact that I'm connecting from windows.

I have 2 computers in my house, on my network. I want to connect to one computer to the other using SSH. On one I installed "OpenSSH-server". "OpenSSH-client" was already installed. I go to the other computer to try to connect to the "server" computer and I enter in the terminal:
Code:
ssh username@192.168.0.33
It never connects. The text input "bar" keeps blinking, it never connects and I get the "Connection timed out" message.
how I can connect to the "server" computer? What am I doing wrong? And if I edit my "/etc/ssh/sshd_config" file to listen to port "12345" how do I get the other machine to connect to that port?

I have a tp-link TL-WR941ND router, but it doesn't seem to have any related options. How can I do it? Is there another way?I know I can add them on by one to the host file, but that is not what I want. Also that wouldn't work well with DHCP, and new hosts.

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my sister's HPtx2000 since she isn't going to use it anymore and it worked better than I expect. The touchscreen works without any additional driver tweaking and installation <3, the wireless works fine, the sound works. I listed those because when i was installing, I was looking around at other people that did this and those were the problems they had (but those was of an old OS).
Well anyways, what I want to ask is about the stuff that doesn't work and the stuff I want to do: The buttons that flip the screen and etc doesn't work. Is there a way to map them and flip the orientation of the screen? And the other buttons too, like the media button. Is there a way to map them to open VLC or something? Does anyone know any tablet programs for Ubuntu? E.g a simple text program that can convert stuff written to neat, typed font? A way to write text into a google search bar using the stylus? And while we're on this, is there a way to map a left click on the touch screen?
In Windows, the left click could be mapped to: a). a side button of the pen, b) the top button of the pen, and c) holding the pen down onto the touchscreen. how to use Samba to access a public folder of a Windows computer? And to access the printer connect to the Windows computer? Some of the tutorials I found were only for folders and printers on the Ubuntu computer.

I'm trying to set up a Samba printer in Debian linux. The printer is being shared by a computer running windows vista. Some of the information I've got in the process. Sharing seems to be working, the printer seems to be detected and authenticating (I've tried invalid values and the utility I'm using to set things up says it cannot verify when I use invalid values, but with things as they are it claims everything checks out).
When I go into CUPS it says it detects the printer and everything is working. However, printing a test page causes the job to be immediately complete and nothing happens. It seems that the job is getting lost somewhere in the process. Could it be a firewall issue? I feel like the right ports must be unblocked since I can query the computer and verify the printer, etc. I have a laptop with vista which I installed a printer on and was able to print to that computer just fine. So it doesn't seem to be a Vista thing.

I am trying to connect to an apple computer wirelessly to get access to the internet.. If no encryption is used on the network (gateway?) set up by the apple computer I can connect just fine and browse the internet.
-If a WEP encryption is introduced I cannot seem to connect... even though the WEP keys are identical.
-I have tried both WEP 128 passphrase and WEP 40/128 key... -Have tried the WEP passphrase being both just numbers in case that mattered.

I want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.
My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.
