Ubuntu :: Network - Unable To Access Inter/intranet?

Dec 29, 2010

I've recently installed Ubuntu server 10.10 on an older Pentium 3 computer to test the capabilities of Ubuntu and to have more experience with the OS. During my install, the network card, a Kingston KNE100TX, was successfully detected however auto configuration failed. This was tried against a Windows 2k3 DHCP server as well as a Cradlepoint router. As expected, since no DHCP server provided an address, the routing table is empty.

I retried configuring the Kingston card with a static IP address. This time as expected, ifconfig showed the IP address that was assigned and the route table had been populated. Attempting to ping my gateway, 192.168.17.1, resulted in Destination Host Unreachable. The same results were encountered when the configuration was changed to a different network.

Slackware :: Getting An Intranet Without Outside Access?

Dec 29, 2010

I've been running with DSL and Linksys router, connecting servers and printer via hard-wire Ethernet. The router doesn't like to talk to things without a network connection (the only thing I can have is a USB wireless modem until I get HughesNet or some other satellite service). What I'm wondering is what I need (a bridge? a switch?) to plug stuff in and have them talk to each other nicely.

Ubuntu Networking :: Creating A Ubuntu-based Intranet With Internet Access?

Jan 20, 2011

I am trying to create an intranet that will serve about 100 clients. If it is possible, I would like it to be set that anyone on the intranet would be able to type helpdeskin their browser bar and be taken to the intranet site. I have Webmin and there are just too many options to figure out how to do this. They may as well have written it in Chinese. File server? Email? Impossible.

I can get to the intranet locally by typing in the local IP, but no one wants to remember numbers.

Then, I need to get that intranet accessible via the internet. A domain name has already been purchased and our cable company has assigned us 5 static IPs. The issue here is getting the IP to link up with the server. The intranet has to be configured in such a way that it can be administered remotely. Again, with Webmin, I am clueless. I was going to try to use ISPConfig, but seeing as how you have to pay for the install directions

Networking :: Build A Network From Scratch That Includes File And Printer Sharing, Intranet?

Apr 17, 2010

I want to learn how to build a Linux network from scratch that includes file and printer sharing, intranet. I have an intermediate-level knowledge of Windows networking. Can anyone suggest a book or online tutorial that I can learn from? Now let me be clear: I am finding no shortage of tutorials on the web. However, too many are old or incomplete.

A little extra info: I am a teacher/network admin for a small private school with about 50 student computers (that I wish to become Linux machines in the future) and about 10 staff computers (mostly Windows laptops--I do not expect the staff to convert to Linux as readily), I currently do not have an intranet implemented.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Access Network Shares From Nautilus File Manager

Oct 15, 2010

I'm running 64 bit Lucid on a HTPC that is networked with a Windows 7 64 bit laptop. Up until this morning, sharing media between these two worked fine. When I attempted to connect through Rhythmbox to play music, the computer couldn't find the files. I attempted to access the network through Nautilus and it was unable to mount the location. So I tried the Create Launcher command and created a link of the network on the desktop. I was prompted to login and it worked perfectly This has happened once before and the only way to fix it was to reinstall Ubuntu.I would very much like to avoid that if possible as the system is setup perfectly.

I wouldn't bother with the issue if it didn't prevent me from adding my music files to Rhythmbox. I have run findsmb as well as smbtree. Smbtree returned nothing and findsmb had a dotted line with nothing underneath. Nothing has been removed. I did install security updates this morning, but since it has happened before, I am more inclined to thing it is a bug or conflict somewhere.

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Access Windows Shares On An All Lucid Network

Oct 26, 2010

I marked this solved when I discovered, after much reconfiguring, I had a faulty Netgear router - I just thought I'd save you reading all this to find the answer.I have 3 machines at home all running Lucid. All have Samba and shared folders but I can't access files on any machine from any other. This worked ok when they were running Karmic. I'm also unable to set up printing across the network from the two machines without local printers. The main machine has 2 printers connected via USB, the others are using WiFi. I'm not using firewalls on any machine.

Filesharing
On any machine I go to Places, Network and Nautilus opens at network:/// and shows me 'Windows Network' I open that and see the Workgroup folder which I open and see the folder is empty. (I did see the 3 machines before I completely removed Samba and re-installed a few minutes ago)

Printing
On one of the remote machines I go to Add Printer, Select Device, Network Printer, Windows Printer via Samba, Browse but I can't see the machine with the printers attached in the Workgroup. Another clue is that when I look at the printer properties, policies on the main machine all 3 boxes are ticked, Enabled, Accepting jobs (but it says Not published) and Shared.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Unable To Access University WLAN Network?

Nov 12, 2010

I'm unable to get into my university's WLAN network. LAN works just fine, but sometimes it's quite convenient to be able to access stuff wirelessly. It doesn't seem to be a hardware problem, because if I configure my computer according to our computer department's instructions it works fine with Ubuntu (currently I carry around a stick to get into the Internet when I really need it and don't have a cable). Some info:

My device:
Broadcom WLAN controller on a Lenovo G560

My system:
OpenSUSE 11.3 64-bit

The drivers are installed, I can get into normal private networks, but have never managed to get into the university network except for with Ubuntu.

The university instructions tell me to use the following settings:
Security: WPA Enterprise
Authentification: TTLS
Inner Authentification: PAP
Username: My username
Password: Password
CA Certificate: Deutsche_Telekom_Root_CA_2.pem
In the KDE instructions, they tell you to write "anonymous" into the anonymous identity field, but in the GNOME instructions it says to leave it blank. In Ubuntu, I leave it blank and it works.

I've got the recommended settings, which also work in GNOME.

I'd ask the tech support here, but I am the tech support We've got it working with other systems, like I said, but not with SUSE, and I'm a SUSE fan.

General :: Unable To Access Windows Shares Or Printer Over Network

Dec 19, 2009

I've got my other networking problem (mostly) solved, but now I'm having other issues.I was previously able to access the shared folders on a Windows machine on the network essentially by default. Now whenever I try to navigate to the shared folders graphically (either through Places->Network->Windows Network->(workgroup name here), or through a custom shortcut on the deskop), I get a message: "Failed to retrieve share list from server". I have no idea what I might have done config-wise (or install-program-wise) to screw it over, but something's definitely not working...it's been like this for a good many weeks, and I've just dealt with it, seeing as how I don't normally use that shared folder much anyway.

What's really ticking me off now, though, is that long before this started happening, I had set up a printer share with the same computer (using the graphical tool that comes with Ubuntu), and that worked excellently to start out. Recently, however, when I tried to print from the same printer (after the "Failed to retrieve share list" message started showing up), it would sit there and show "Pending"; it wouldn't print at all. Then I tried deleting the existing entry and creating a new one, figuring a new, fresh configuration would be created. However, when I tried to add a printer via the graphical tool (same as I had done before), it's telling me that "No printer was fount at [that] address".

Debian Configuration :: Unable To Access System>Pereferences>Network Connections?

Mar 15, 2011

I just installed Debian and am getting a problem where I can't open the list of network connections. I can use the network manager applet to connect to wireless networks, but I cannot access the network connections list from there either (right click "edit connections)

I'm not incredibly knowledgeable with Linux, but I tried a few simple things I could think of like reinstalling the packages, or restarting the interfaces. (ifdown/up wlan0)

It's strange, because when I click "network connections," I see it show up for a second on the bottom panel, I get some rotating mouse icon while I wait a few seconds and then if goes away. Is there some kind of logfile that could help me identify the problem?

Using Debian 6 on eeePC1000HEB with Ath9k (i think) wireless card. Net Interface: wlan0

Programming :: Fast Inter-application Communication For Academic Simulator

Dec 1, 2010

I have an academic simulator software and I want to visualize its output at the same time the simulation is happening. However I want to separate visualization and simulation modules. The simulation data will be held in an array of a size around 0.5M and will be read only to visualization software (but updated regularly by simulator).

- In past I have used shared memory to share small variables among two applications.

- TCP/IP adds the option of having the simulator and visualization applications on separate machines but the implementation will be more difficult.

- I have also thought about an abstraction layer which allows to replace the communication/interconnection layer with other methods later (file/network/shared memory/pipe).

Ubuntu Networking :: The Phone Can Access The Internet Through The Computer Unable To Get Access To Https Sites, Like Webmails

Dec 31, 2010

I managed to configure my W890i phone to get access to internet through an ubuntu-based computer. It's very easy to use the phone to give internet access to the computer, but the opposite is quite more tricky. For that I've done the following

----On the phone---

-Set the USB network option to "through computer", so that the phone uses the computer's internet connection and not the opposite.

-Decide and set "Shared Network" parameters: user, pasword and workgroup.

-In "conectivity-> internet connection" set "allow local network" to "yes"

----On Ubuntu 10.04---

-Install samba, samba-client, smbfs, smbclient, firestarter and dhcp3-server

-Configure Samba (System-> Administration-> Shared folders): same workgroup as in the phone, add new user (the phone), passwd this new user. In my case the user was called "w890i" and the password given was the same.

-Once the phone is connected to the computer through USB (then select "phone mode"), a new connection appears in NetworkManager: usb0.The aim is to create a shared network that gives internet access to this device. Edit the IPv4 parameters of this new connection, set them to Manual and give an IP adress (192.168.0.1) and a subnet mask (255.255.255.0); the rest of the fields are left empty.Connect this network.

-Set firestarter to use dhcp3: sudo ln -sf /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server /etc/init.d/dhcpd

-Launch firestarter and follow the wizard. Set "allow internet shared connection", choose the device for the primary internet access, and then the device for the shared network (usb0). Then change the settings for firestarter: activate DHCP for local network, set IP to the one we gave before (192.168.0.1).

-Open dhcp3-server config file sudo gedit /etc/default/dhcp3-server And set INTERFACES="usb0"

-Set the policies of firestarter: in incoming connections, allow connections from the IP adress given to the phone (192.168.0.1). Then add rules for the ports that need to be open for this connection. I opened HTTP, HTTPS, SMB, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, IMAPS, DHCP for all the connections in the local network.

-Apply policies and start the firewall.

------------

After all this, the phone can access the internet through the computer. Two problems appeared:

1. I couldn't get access to https sites, like webmails. The phone gave a "communication error". But then I tried with Opera instead of the browser built in the phone's firmware, and I could finally get to https sites.

2. I couldn't retrieve mail, neither POP nor IMAP nor IMAPS. I thought it was a firmware problem again, and I tried out several mobile phone email clients written in java, but none of them worked.

So this is at the moment the problem. If I connect from the phone to the internet directly through 3G, the email clients work for all my accounts. I don't think it's a firewall problem, because the ports are opened for this connection

Ubuntu :: Write Access On Raid5 Mount And Network Access

Apr 22, 2010

I'm running ubuntu 9.10, and created a softraid5 with no problems. Now i need it to automount with user read/write access, and i need to make some network share folders. My fstab has the following line for the raid:

Code:
/dev/md0 /media/raid auto rw,user,auto,exec 0 0
After i mounted it, i changed the permission with:

Code:
sudo chmod 777 /media/raid/
So now i can create folders and files on it.
Then i created some shares, one with guest access and other with no guest access.

Now the questions:

1) If i access the guest shared folder via WinXP, i create files and folders, but they appear locked on ubuntu, so i cant access them until i change the permissions. If i go to proprieties/Permissions, the owner is "nobody".

2) What password do i need to use on WinXP, and i try to access the non-guest shared folded? Do i need to create a user just for that?
