Ubuntu :: Nautilus File Manager Looks Strange In Lucid

May 7, 2010

I need some restoring my Nautilus File Manager back to its original state. I tried installing Elementary Nautilus but for some reason it was not working for me, so I uninstalled it but have been having an issue with Nautilus looking like its former self. Now Nautilus doesn't display the "tree" on the left, there are no back/forward icons, and generally looking strange. Here's a picture to showcase my issue:

I would love to use Elementary Nautilus but can not get it as my default file manager. Since I can't do that I just want Nautilus (the one that comes shipped with Ubuntu) to look and act like it's supposed to.

Ubuntu :: Make Nautilus As File Manager?

Dec 13, 2010

I have, in fact, stated my problem correctly. I want to make Nautilus as the default File Manager in KDE. I use GNOME on other computers, and don't like the feel of the KDE file manager on my PC. I looked online but most "solutions" are for the other way round and in either case, didn't work for me.

I tried changing the 'inode/directory' file association to Nautilus but it didn't change anything. What can I do ? (I have GNOME as a DE here too .. But I would like to know how to change the association in KDE as well)

Ubuntu :: Nautilus File Manager Very Slow With Folders With Many Files?

Jun 3, 2010

With Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.0.4 I have seen that the nautilus filemanager is extremely slow with folders that contains many files or/and folders.I made sure that "Assistive Technologies" is diable. On the filemanager preference I set all preview to "Never", tried all possible views, but the filemanager remains extremely slow. It seems like it becomes even slower when the subfolders in the folder you are viewing new files are being created by for example a program. Possibly nautilus filemanager is updating continuously ?

I use to be using debian etch nautilus file manager. With the same directories, nautilus in debain etch was working much faster. But contrary to the one in Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.0.4 is is far less stable. It seems like the newer version is more stable but however extremely much slower. I was wondering if I am missing something. Or whether this is a bug. If it is a bug, then I am wondering when this is going to be solved in nautlius filemanager.

Ubuntu :: Choose Nautilus File Manager Header Format?

Oct 31, 2010

Last night I had to re-install Ubuntu. Previously, the header of the file manager had been configured up with the three buttons on the right for icon/list/compact view (see 1st image below), whilst since re-installing, they appear with the drop-down menu instead (as per the 2nd image). How do you change between these two formats? My preference is for the first of these.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Access Network Shares From Nautilus File Manager

Oct 15, 2010

I'm running 64 bit Lucid on a HTPC that is networked with a Windows 7 64 bit laptop. Up until this morning, sharing media between these two worked fine. When I attempted to connect through Rhythmbox to play music, the computer couldn't find the files. I attempted to access the network through Nautilus and it was unable to mount the location. So I tried the Create Launcher command and created a link of the network on the desktop. I was prompted to login and it worked perfectly This has happened once before and the only way to fix it was to reinstall Ubuntu.I would very much like to avoid that if possible as the system is setup perfectly.

I wouldn't bother with the issue if it didn't prevent me from adding my music files to Rhythmbox. I have run findsmb as well as smbtree. Smbtree returned nothing and findsmb had a dotted line with nothing underneath. Nothing has been removed. I did install security updates this morning, but since it has happened before, I am more inclined to thing it is a bug or conflict somewhere.

Ubuntu :: Where Are Nautilus / Metafiles In Lucid

Apr 30, 2010

I would like to backup my files and folders. This is very easy - but just copying the files to another HD loses all the emblems I attached to files/folder with nautilus. So, I would like to backup/restore not only my data, but additionally the emblems I assigned to them in nautilus. At least in Jaunty, there was a xml-file in ~/.nautilus/metafiles/ that contains all emblem-assignments I did with nautilus.

So restoring this folder brought back all my emblems. In Lucid (and in Karmic), this folder is empty. Does anyone know where nautilus stores these information now? I read somewhere in the internet, that the new folder is ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata. But that does not seem to be true. I assigned a emblem to a new folder, but there are no changes in ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata and subfolders.

Ubuntu :: Lucid - Change Gnome / Nautilus Keyboard Shortcuts?

Without this tab can anyone tell me how I can modify the shortcuts to do this? I have spent some time looking at gconf-editor but nothing is jumping out at me, particularly with regards to the back and forward browsing.

Fedora Servers :: LAMP Configuration - Strange PHP INI File

Nov 22, 2009

My installation went fine. Apache, PHP, and MYSQL all work independently. My trouble getting PHP to serve MySQL content. The first thing I did was look in the PHP.INI file to check that it was set up correctly. Then I discovered my install of PHP does not have the expected directives, namely extension_dir or any DLL comments where I can enable MYSQL. Instead my config file has a PHP.D directory. In that directory there are no files for MYSQL. I look at the PHP.net site and I can't find any info on how to write this file. And there's the issue of the missing extension_dir directive.

As I said, I visited the PHP.net site and could not find any specific manual pages explaining this change to PHP 5.2.11. I downloaded "the latest php.ini" development file from the site. As near as I can tell its for PHP 6.0.0 and it does have the extension_dir directive, and it still uses the DLLs in Dynamic Extensions section. (EDITED= The introduction of the PHP.INI file doesn't give a version number, however later under error handling there is a note: "as of PHP 6.0.0"). Why I can't find more information about this on any forum or at PHP.net?

Debian :: Sudo Results In Strange File Owner

Mar 16, 2010

I like the "Ubuntu" sudo philosophy and wanted to setup this sudo the same way on my Debian system. I was happy when I found that I just have to do the following:
-create a group 'admin'
-adduser christian admin
-visudo
-add the line: %admin ALL=(ALL) ALL

Then I tried sudo rm -rf / to check if sudo works. All worked fine. No, seriously, I can move around files that belong to the root and such, so sudo somehow works. But when creating new files with sudo, like e.g.
tar xzf myZippedTarball
these files belong to user 41034 and to the group users instead of root root:
drwxr-xr-x 7 41034 users 4096 2009-11-01 01:07 libsvm-2.9
Certainly, this is not the way I want to have. The user 41034 doesn't even show up in /etc/passwd...

Ubuntu :: Compiz Config Settings Manager In Lucid

Aug 2, 2010

So I decided a while ago to download the newest distribution release, Lucid Lynx, and try it out on a LiveCD. The first thing I installed onto the LiveCD environment was CompizConfig Settings Manager. One question I have about it is... Why are so many of the plugins missing or limited?

In 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope, there are many plugin options, and to be honest, I use a large quantity of them. For example, a plugin I use on 9.04 called "Reflection." For those of you who don't know, reflection allows you to show an image in window decorations and shadows. This plugin is completely missing from CompizConfig Settings Manager in 10.04!

Another example, this time a limited one, is the Animations plugin. It's missing the option for closing animation called "Burn." This is an animation I LOVE showing off and using, yet it's... Gone.

Am I missing something? Did I do something wrong on installing it? Is there a way to get the parts that are missing?

Just in case you're wondering how I installed it, it was the popular method of using GNOME-Terminal and typing:

Code:
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
