View 1 RepliesI posted this on Launchpad under bug# 569445 and though I'm certain someone in our heroic development community will have a look at it eventually, maybe someone can help me here in the meantime, or at least provide some background info. Maybe a little reassurance that Ubuntu isn't broken for my Wifi is all I need.

Binary package hint: wireless-crda I do hope I've picked the right package for this. Investigators, feel free to email me with whatever bash commands you need me to find out more about the hardware. The problem is that wireless in Lucid is dying for me after about a minute or so, and the activity light on my netbook just flashes. The wireless monitor at the top of the screen still thinks it's connected. It's like it's out of sync or something.
This doesn't happen under Win7 on this hardware, nor does it happen to other devices in my house on the network. Also, I wasn't having this problem under Lucid Beta 1 I have an Acer Aspire (Olympic Variant) 1410 Win7 reports the adapter as Intel WiFi Link 1000 BGN The wireless router I'm using is a DLink DIR-628. The connection is OPEN.
Why is my computer taking around a minute to boot? 10.04 for me is slower at booting than 8.04 is. 10.04 is taking about 10 seconds to get to the login screen, then almost a minute after that before it gets to a fully loaded desktop.

Will provide additional information if needed. Issue: Despite all the legwork I've been doing, I cannot play .mkv and .mp4 files. So far I've tried using VLC player, installing the w32codecs using medibuntu, installing the ubuntu-restricted-extras package, and did some gstreamer stuff. Nothing has worked so far. The best I've gotten is a blank screen with the audio. On a not so serious note, I have also been having trouble getting my webcam to work. I installed cheese, but it too only gives me a blank screen. In spite of having a blank screen, the pictures I take with it show up in the file. It's a rather vexing matter, but not as serious as the above one.
play these webstreams from the European Parliament? [URL]I'm using Lucid, FF etc. I've installed all the codecs/programmes etc (W32, gstreamer, mplayer, vlc, realplayer etc). I have tried gecko mediaply, mplayer, totem etc.I've read so many suggestions, but have no luck.
View 1 Replies View Relatedwhen I start playing some medium-intense game the computer just restarts randomly. I made a lot of search on it and even tested various things. I have been having this system for about a month and the problem appeared just one week ago.I am a big fan of "Spring: TA" and that's the easiest way to reproduce the problem, by playing that game(and the most annoying). The funny thing is that when I just start the game the gpu temperature raises very fast. If after some time the pc doesn't reboot on itself the temperature just gets lower and lower. I was suspicious that the problem had to do with temperature so I made some scripts and logged the temperatures in every instant time.
View 6 Replies View RelatedAnybody notice a slowdown in their boot times? I have had F11 (64 bit) running for about three days and it is taking twice as long to boot as when I first installed. I have not done much other than configure my wireless printer and change a few icons. I have Compiz cube effects running but I did that right away and it made no difference in my system speed. If anything I thought I should be booting faster after disabling a few things in the start up menu that I dont need.
I went from about a 30 second total boot to almost a minute to the login screen

Basically when I login back from a suspend or after I boot the pc, the wifi takes 30seconds to a minute before it starts to connect. This makes it very annoying to have to wait for no reason.
Basically the issue is caused by the wifi not having a script to search for a network after a suspend.
HP Pavillion DV9000 Fresh install of Maverick 10.10
After a successful upgrade to lucid, everything was going GREAT (including FINALLY having surround output) until now all of the sudden music files won't play... When I double-click a file, Totem opens automatically, and it says it's playing, but there's no sound and the bar does not move across at the bottom. In VLC, the bar moves like it's playing, but there is still no sound. Doesn't work when I hover the cursor over a file, either. In previous versions of Ubuntu, a simple reboot would fix this, but that doesn't work with Lucid... Online streaming works fine.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI would like to backup my files and folders. This is very easy - but just copying the files to another HD loses all the emblems I attached to files/folder with nautilus. So, I would like to backup/restore not only my data, but additionally the emblems I assigned to them in nautilus. At least in Jaunty, there was a xml-file in ~/.nautilus/metafiles/ that contains all emblem-assignments I did with nautilus.
So restoring this folder brought back all my emblems. In Lucid (and in Karmic), this folder is empty. Does anyone know where nautilus stores these information now? I read somewhere in the internet, that the new folder is ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata. But that does not seem to be true. I assigned a emblem to a new folder, but there are no changes in ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata and subfolders.
My system hangs at boot time when loading hardware drivers for about a minute. dmesg

I wanted to know if there is variant of RollbackRX (www.rollbackrx.com.au) freeware or payable. RollbackRX used to Backup/Restore whole system changes in less than 1 minute before OS boot. And it does not consume a lot of free space.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI need some restoring my Nautilus File Manager back to its original state. I tried installing Elementary Nautilus but for some reason it was not working for me, so I uninstalled it but have been having an issue with Nautilus looking like its former self. Now Nautilus doesn't display the "tree" on the left, there are no back/forward icons, and generally looking strange. Here's a picture to showcase my issue:

I would love to use Elementary Nautilus but can not get it as my default file manager. Since I can't do that I just want Nautilus (the one that comes shipped with Ubuntu) to look and act like it's supposed to.
Karmic there was a tab inside "System->Preferences->Appearance" called "Interface" which allowed me to modify the keyboard shortcuts. I had <Backspace> to move backwards in Nautilis and <Shift><Backspace> to move forward.
Without this tab can anyone tell me how I can modify the shortcuts to do this? I have spent some time looking at gconf-editor but nothing is jumping out at me, particularly with regards to the back and forward browsing.
How do you toggle between the button and text-based location bar in Nautilus in Lucid. I can only get Nautilus to show the directory path as buttons and not as as text based in the form of /home/Desktop.Previously there was a button to toggle between them.

I cannot seem to find any good documentation on the role of flags -Bdynamic and -Bstatic in g++. The man pages are not very helpful either.I found an example on the web:"gcc object1.o object2.o -Wl,-Bstatic -lapplejuice -Wl,-Bdynamic -lorangejuice -o binary".According to which -Bstatic instructs the linker to statically link
the applejuice library and to dynamically link the orangejuice library. If orangejuice uses the applejuice library anywhere however, the applejuice is also linked dynamically. Is it correct to assume that this is correct and describes the true functionality of those two flags in gcc? (ie: Bstatic and Bdynamic are used for mixing static and shared libraries during linking)Is it correct to assume that the same applies to g++ as well?
So recently I've been trying out openSUSE, along with a few other distros, for use on my HTPC. Previously, I'd been using a hackintosh build, so my external media storage HDDs are all formated HFS+. It was actually surprisingly easy to get openSUSE to mount them for both reading and writing.
Only thing is, XBMC has been pretty unstable on all of the linux distros I've tried, and I'm wondering to what degree the HFS filesystem might be affecting things? It would take a fair bit of juggling -- or going out and buying a new multi-TB HDD -- to clear out the disks in turn so as to reformat them with an ext filesystem, but if that would help me get a more stable HTPC with opensuse -- the linux distro I've settled on -- it'd be worth it. I'll paste a link to the log from an xbmc crash, in case that would be helpful, but really, I'm just curious, since I don't really know all that much about how different filesystems work or anything, how much extra strain does the filesystem translating entail?

View 3 Replies View Relatedtoday while using 10.04 Lucid Lynx 64 bit I decided to do something about the low resolution boot screen, I've seen the bugs thread but I thought startup manager would be the way to go Anyway I changed the resolution and the bits to the highest they would go I rebooted and I got the normal coloured boot screen but no logo just text, then I tried disabling text and enabling the boot logo Then I rebooted and the same thing again Then I removed startup manager and the whole boot screen turned bright pink and still had a text logo!
