Ubuntu :: Toggle Between Button And Text-based Location Bar Nautilus - Lucid?
May 2, 2010
How do you toggle between the button and text-based location bar in Nautilus in Lucid. I can only get Nautilus to show the directory path as buttons and not as as text based in the form of /home/Desktop.Previously there was a button to toggle between them.

I just installed 10.04 on a computer I put together, I noticed the button that allows you to switch back and forth to the 'text entry mode' on the nautilus location bar is missing. Is there a way to get this back? I found you can use CTRL+L or use gconf-editor to switch but I used that button quite a bit and want to find a way to get it back.

I have openSUSE 11.3 Gnome installed. The nautilus address bar shows the "Button Bar" and if I press Ctrl+L it swaps to the "Text Location Bar". The Text Location bar is where you see the full path to the directory that you're viewing. But I can't set the default addressing to the Text Location Bar.What else should I do to get the text location bar (i.e. the full path) to be the default view in the address bar?

how do I toggle between breadcrumbs and location bar? Ctrl L just doesn't do anything, just gives focus to the already existing location bar.
I'd like breadcrumbs back.

How do I get the middle button on my X220 to toggle scrolling with the Trackpoint?
And when I installed I couldn't get it to boot from USB in UEFI only. Why is that? How do I fix that so I can do a quick reinstall before I do too much else.
And before I do that reinstall is there anyway to backup the 300MB+ update that I just downloaded because I have appalling internet?

I have been testing ubuntu 10.10 maverick, it has some nice features. Anyway I am missing the possibility of writing manually the folder you want to go on nautilus using the Location bar. It was used to have some kind of icon which you can click and it switched between graphich breadcrumbs or the location of the folder and you could changed it manually, you know what I mean?

Does anyone know how I can move the location bar in nautilus up by the toolbar, as shown by this pic:
http://i39.tinypic.com/2qdsyll.jpg
I'd rather not have to download the source of nautilus and edit the code / compile it myself.
By the way, a guy on Ubuntu Forums thought this was a mockup. It's not. It's the regular version of Nautilus, only I removed some toolbar buttons through the /usr/share/nautilus/ui xml files.
I just want the location bar next to the toolbar to conserve screen space, and be a bit more like Finder.

I just installed Fedora 13 on my HP HDX 16 laptop (and accidentally corrupted my vista partition by resizing it so I'm pretty much stuck now. ^_^)
The light for the wifi toggle button constantly flashes between blue and orange (normally meaning the wifi card is on or off). Does anybody know how I can fix this?

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx LTS. My laptop is an HP Pavilion TX1210AU (TX1000 series). After disabling the touchpad using the toggle button and reenabling it again, it stopped working. I tried restarting my laptop and the mouse worked again only up to the Login Screen. After logging in to my account, the mouse froze again. I tried making a new account and tried logging into it (I'm using it now) and it's now fixed. Does Ubuntu change any user settings everytime the touchpad toggle (on/off) button is switched? Maybe I could just reenable it myself.

I am mighty annoyed that I have to dive into the file menue to create a new folder. So I googled and found something that supposedly fixes it.:
[URL]
So I tried that, for starters I only added the line
<toolitem name="Cut" action="Cut"/>
and saved nautilus-navigation-window-ui.xml again. However this has NO effect.

I have 2 text files : file1.txt and file2.txt
cat file1.txt
15 this is a sentence containing various words and spaces
34 this is a another sentence containing various words and spaces
cat file2.txt
2 this is sentence1file2
6 this is sentence2file2
54 this is sentence3file2
I would like to join these 2 files. The result should look as follows :
cat joinedfile.txt
2 this is sentence1file2
6 this is sentence2file2
15 this is a sentence containing various words and spaces
34 this is a another sentence containing various words and spaces
54 this is sentence3file2
==> so the joined file must be sorted on the first number. Any ideas how this can be achieved ?

Is there any application that will let me restrict search results, by, for example, whether it is a plain text document or a jpeg image (not by extension, but the same way nautilus knows if something is a jpeg even if it doesn't have an extension)? It would be nice to have an easy way to search for, e.g., just images, just videos, or just music without relying on file extensions.

On all the previous versions of Ubuntu there was a button I'd press to change between button navigation like this and text navigation like this but I can't find this button anymore so now all I have is button navigation. Theres no reason they'd get rid of that feature so I'm guessing its in there somewhere, I just can't find it.

In Fedora 12/11 there used to be a button in the Nautilus to the left of the address/location bar which would let me switch between two representation of location bar: 1) buttons 2) as string that I can type in.
In Fedora 13 I cannot get the same behaviour. The button is missing and location only shows up as a set of buttons.
I have looked in the settings of Nautilus, but couldn't find anything related to this. How do I get location bar to show up as a string where I can manually type the path?

I'm working on building my own turn-key variant of Ubuntu Server. I'm trying to find out what the non-graphical installer is called so I can use it in my install DVD After a fair amount of searching,I have come up empty-handed. I know the graphical installer is called ubiquity and that works great if you have a live desktop environment.

Been searching around for a few days. So far I have found three previous topics on this and all of them are useless/out of date. I'm trying to install [URL]... I've tried making it from the binary on the site and I get a bunch of errors when I try to "make" it. I've attached the output from make. Anyone know how to get this to work? I found a tutorial that said you had to find the .module files and remove all the "-e"s but I cannot find any .module files.

I was using lucid since beta 2 without problems, but since few days I can't get a menu when I click on the right mouse button. Doesn't work on the desktop or when for example I want to rename a file using the right mouse button. Is this a bug from gnome or a new properties?

I've installed lucid on two computers now and have been using or a few months.Overall, it's pretty good and everything just works. However, every now and then (seemingly random), the power button in the indicator appletsion panel widget randomly disappears, so I'm unable to shut down my computer without re-adding the widget, or using the command line to shutdown the computer. Now this is acceptable for me, an advanced user. However, this is not acceptable for my parents and family, who also use ubuntu computers. Today, my mother called me to ask why she couldn't turn off her computer. I was dumbfounded, and had to walk her through turning it off "by hand."
Now this is not me accidentally removing the indicator applet session panel item. No, I can still see the user name bubble with availability information and I can still switch users. It's just that the power button is completely missing (sometimes the place where it used to be is occupied by a corrupt graphic). Additionally, if I login later, the power button magically returns without me having to do anything with regards to the panel. This is disappointing indeed.
Honestly, this is why ubuntu and linux in general still have the reputation they do of being non-user-friendly. At least in windows or mac, when I get fed-up I can turn it off. But not so in ubuntu. No ubuntu tortures me continuously and I marvel that such a simple thing has escaped the minds of such advanced programmers. I wish Canonical would focus on letting us TURN OFF the computer instead of adding crazy features that I'm not going to use. I mean how can a real operating system fail at such a simple task
