I was messing around with different GUI sessions, and I wanted to try XFCE. Well, I switched to XFCE for a session, and I played around in it. When I went back to a Gnome session, however, it appears that Thunar is now the default filesystem explorer.I get the Thunar explorer. I want the Nautilus explorer. How do I fix this issue?

This machine has UBUNTU & wINDOWS XP. I'm currently logged into UBUNTU. I was just checking the features of GParted and accidentally clicked Device > Create Partition Table. A default MS-DOS partition table is created. Now if I re-start the Gparted there is nothing. Its showing entire disk as UNALLOCATED space.
Lucky thing is All the drives (C:, D:, E:) are currently mounted and I'm in UBUNTU. I guess its possible to re-create the partition table using current status. how to do this. This is a lab computer. If its not recoverable. I'm completely screwed!

Now, when I click on Places and anything (say Desktop), Krusader starts up (I set krusader to the default in KDE).
Where do I change this? I can't find the location in preferences to change this.
I have a pretty vanilla install of Ubuntu Lucid. I would like to change my default WM to sawfish. I have it installed, and it works routinely, I would just like to have it start automatically on log-in, rather than Lucid. A few sources have suggested that the way to do this is during log-in. They refer to a "session" I could choose, which would allow me to set the WM. I remember doing this in the past, but can't find such an option on the login page, now.
I have also experimented with changing .gconf/desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager/ using both gconf-editor and emacs. However, when I change "/usr/bin/compiz" to "/usr/bin/sawfish", log out, and log back in, I find that compiz starts anyway, and the setting in that file has been restored to compiz. Clearly, the gconf mechanism is getting the information from some other source.

This worked for me with karmic, but I'm not seeing any way to select a window manager during the lucid log in process. (Sawfish is running fine if I start it with "killall compiz && sawfish &" during an ongoing session.)

View 1 Replies View RelatedI finally waded through all the graphical issues that have been reported when upgrading 10.10 to 11.04. I've managed to get the nvidia drivers installed and working (even though Jockey still reports that nvidia-current is installed but has not been activated).Whenever I log into an Ubuntu Classic session, GNOME defaults to using metacity as the window manager. In order to get my compiz effects working, I have to open a terminal and do "compiz --replace". After that, everything appears to work normally including on screen notifications, the cube, etc.
I've though of including a "compiz --replace" script in Startup Applications as a possible workaround, but is there a better way to handle not having compiz started by default? Is there something in gconf-editor or similar that I can edit in order to make GNOME default to using compiz?

I play a few games that dont play well with compiz even with all the effects turned off (on system>appearance) which used to change the window manager to metacity it dosent seem to anymore so that i dont have to run metacity --replace every time i want to play one of thease games (and remember to keep the terminal open untill i log out (otherwise i loose all window decorations) how would i set gnome to allways use metacity?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI've got this Ubuntu 10.04 machine at work where I installed xubuntu-desktop as I'm much more familiar with Xfce than with Gnome.This means now all Gnome and Xfce related applications are installed (both Nautilus and Thunar, to make an example).I use Gigolo to access network shares.Problem is, when I open a network share with Gigolo, Nautilus opens instead of Thunar. This is annoying for a number of reasons and I'm not going to bother you with those.I want Gigolo to use Thunar instead.
I already did everything that's suggested on the Gigolo help page, but the problem persists. Uninstalling Nautilus, besides not being an option as this is a multi-user machine, doesn't solve the problem and actually results in this error on the terminal.
Is there a way I can remove Nautilus and replace it with Thunar. I like Thunar more and would like to use it.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently went through a desktop crisis after removing unity from 11.04, installing openbox, hating it, and then installing Gnome 3. What's weird is certain applications like chrome and some other system things appear to use the theme I have (as in, they look nice) but windows like terminal, file browser, and most other applications including the default log in screen all look like windows 95.
you can see the square unstyled buttons. I'm just wondering how to apply a full on system theme to apply to all windows in gnome 3. tweak-gnome didn't look like it could do it, and after running through the themes (redmond, clearlooks, etc) they didn't have any impact on these windows.
I tried to install Compiz on F9 Gnome and I added a startup entry (system, preferences, personal, session, startup programs). Now I can't log in to the gnome window manager, it logs in and then logs out again. I would like to remove the entry that I created in the startup programs, but I don't know which file to edit. Where the settings to the System > Preferences > Personal > Session > Startup Programs are stored.
