Running 11.04 with the gnome3 team ppa and runs as smooth as silk but cannot find a setting to not have two partitions mounted in fstab and Home and Computer from being mounted on Desktop?
View 1 RepliesI am trying to solve multiple issues with my 64x natty install using gnome3 ppa( official ppa from gnome3). I have this setup on two machines, one is a fresh install the other is a upgrade. They both have most of these issues. Here they are: 1) Nautilus will not launch from the favorites bar. It does launch from a shortcut on the desktop. It will not run from the terminal unless I am root. 2) Number lock is disabled at startup (enabled in my bios). I used to be able to enable after nattty had started, I no longer can, though num lock light is lit - number keypad does not work!
3) I have set gnome3 set to let nautilus draw the background and desktop, I get a white screen at boot until Nautilus is launched then I get a background and some desktop icons(no computer or network icons). If I plug in a usb drive the icon appears on my desktop, when I select it I loose the background and have to select it again.
4) Wireless randomly will drop the connection, have to reconnect, sometimes it will, sometimes I have to reboot. I have Fedora installed on a 2nd hard drive on the machine with a clean install and the only similarity is it displays the default desktop until I launch Nautilus, then my background and desktop are displayed with all of the icons. From there on out Fedora has none of these issues. I have used Ubuntu Gnome and XFCE as my only os since 6.0 and have never had this many problems. Both machines would not run the gdm because of Nvidia issues after the upgrade and clean install. I DO NOT want to give up on Ubuntu as I tell all my friends and family to use it.
i recently installed wine, steam, and team fortress 2 so that i could play it. They all installed just fine except for not getting fonts but i did that manually. The problem is when i run tf2 the screen seems to scramble at the menu but after a while it goes away. Performance is terrible in game though and crashes have happened. im running ubuntu 11.04 and the beta of wine installed via software center. Everything else runs great if not better on ubuntu and i would really like to continue to use it over win7.

View 2 Replies View Relatedi ve upgraded to natty 64 bit and have painstakingly re-configured my prev desktop settings (as in maverik) abd now i am held up on 2 items for which i have not found any solution.
a) bluetooth does not detect my nokia n 70 (n 70 detects my laptop but i cant send or receive any files unless it is paired)
b) alternatively when i try to send a file from nokia, it asks for pairing and i key in the pin. then the window hangs and i have to log out and log in. in bluetooth paired deviced i can find my nokia but i cant configure it to connect to the internet...
c) in office i have to connect through a proxy. i am not able to apply it system wide (as the option network proxy is not shown)
I didn't see the gnome3's quick launcher (the quick start bar like MAC) When I install GNOME3 via apt ppa repo. I'm on maverick. Do I have to remove the awn-manager prevously installed?

I know that there must be some NFS links mounted, so if one fails, i need to see that with like an echo or something.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have multiple ubuntu machines and I connect to one through an NFS share. I have done this for a few years without issue. However, since re-installing ubuntu and upgrading to 10.4 I have a problem with my system hanging when the remote shares are lost.
Basically, I can power down the machine downstairs, and my main machine then has a fit. I can not open any folders in ubuntu, nor can I shut down. If I try and shut down the system hangs, last time it hung for 8 hours before I had to kill the power.
These are the lines in my fstab
I don't know what I've done wrong, or how I can prevent this from hanging. I have googled the heck out of this as well and can't seem to find an answer either.
When I run the update manager in XUbuntu (natty/11:04) it does not show its progress while installing the upgrades.
After clicking on "install updates" and authenticating, there used to be a popup window with a progress bar and an option to show "details" but these appear to have disappeared in the last few days.
I don't recall switching these features off and there are no settings to restore them, available within the GUI. Is there another way of restoring this functionality?
If not, is a reinstall the way to go? If so what package(s) need re-installing? And in-case it is a configuration script, what files in my home directory need deleting to ensure a clean reinstall.
After going to Appearance->Fonts, in Natty, I changed the "Window title font" from Tahoma to "Arial Black". Now I can't change it back because Tahoma isn't listed in the "Pick a Font" dialog. I don't know how I originally got Tahoma. I think it did that several versions of Ubuntu ago. How do I get it to show up in the "Pick a Font" dialog? I do have ttf-mscorefonts-installer installed.

I was playing with a theme (Atolm-GS) and followed the install instructions which stated to back up the /usr/share/gnome-shell/theme directory, and replace it with the one from the theme. I did this, logged off, logged on, got my wallpaper for a second, then the Oh No Screen. I logged off, logged in to IceWM, replaced the theme folder with the original, logged back in to Gnome3 and same thing. Alt+F4 does not get rid of the OH No screen. My ~/.xsessions-errors file contains the following:

When I first boot up. I get the GRUB command line. What happened to the boot menu? And I can boot up into my Windows partition just fine. But when I try the other partitions i get "Unknown file system" or when I try to boot into the other ntfs drive, I get "BOOTMBR missing", but yet it does not mean Windows, because i can boot that just fine. I can't find my Ubuntu partition. How can I get the GRUB boot menu back?

With Ubuntu and upstart it reaches the gdm login screen quicker in around 18 - 24 seconds. With systemd does anyone get a noticeable difference?
Also, is it possible to use an alternative desktop to gnome3 in Fedora 15. I've tried Gnome3 with Arch and its very slick although not for me, as I like panels and desktop applets. (I should add that my times quoted were mesaured using bootchart with a default set of services, no tweaking).
I accidentally deleted a system directory so I had to reinstall. I reinstalled, and setup my users again in the same way. When I tried to copy my user files from a saved source, they now appear on the desktop in mass. What I expect is that only files in the Desktop directory show on the desktop, instead all files in the home directory show on the desktop, less the dot files. I can not figure out how the system controls what files show up on the desktop. Comparing the problem user to a working user failed to disclose the difference.

Since my upgrade to 11.04, ubuntu has been running real slow. When I click on the firefox icon on the side bar, it literally takes over 3 seconds to start opening up. And the same thing goes for folders. Is there something I need to tweak to fix this? And my computer is pretty fast on its own, vista runs very fast on it if that says something.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my netbook. Having had a bit of a play with Unity I found it not to my taste, so I've switched to "Ubuntu Classic" - Gnome without Unity - on the login screen. For a while now I've organised my work using the Workspace Switcher Gnome applet. I use five workspaces, each named to identify the type of stuff that goes on in it.
11.04 comes with Workspace Switcher version 2.32.1 - right clicking it and clicking on Preferences gives a stripped down preferences dialogue, no longer including fields allowing the user to define workspace names. Ubuntu 10.04, for example, uses Workspace Switcher 2.30.2 which did allow for workspace names to be defined via the Workspace Switcher Preferences dialogue. I'd really like to be able to define workspace names and have them show in the Workspace Switcher in the panel.
At random times, natty crashes for no obvious reason. The desktop will freeze for about 3 seconds, and then everything goes black. But it seems that everything is still running, because I was able to hit ctrl-Alt-f1 and it worked. This has happened ever since I upgraded to natty yesterday, but is becoming more frequent
View 9 Replies View RelatedFirst off I got to say that Natty is pretty interesting. I really like the space-saving techniques with the omni-bar, vertical app panel, and very fast omni search (similar to windows 7 but much faster). It will take getting used to but I think in the end it will eventually make working much easier and quicker.
It is in beta so I won't get ahead of myself and make assumptions but it seems like Ubuntu has sacrificed a lot of customizability with this release. A few things I've notice that maybe I can get some clarification on-
1. I cannot add panels or items to panels.
I would like to add the system-monitoring tools to my top panel so I can see when my CPU and RAM spikes.
In addition, pidgin no longer appears in my tasks bar. I'm guessing this is a bug? (I prefer it over Empathy. Rather not switch).
2. I cannot find a feature that leaves my vertical app bar visible all the time. When I make an application go full screen it pushes it out of the way. This is a bit annoying when I'm trying to find a file, folder, or application quickly.
Also when I open a file that I didn't mean to open I would like to see it popup in my app bar so I know instantly where to find it and close it. With this I will have to search for it.
Of course this all takes only a few extra seconds.
3. I cannot change the size of my apps in the app bar and it doesn't automatically resize. This might not be a big issue for some but I use my Linux OS solely for work. As a developer I often have upwards of 20 files open and it usually fills my screen when using my avant window navigator. This is significant since I have a wide and short monitor.
4. I am unable to change the orientation of the app bar. This goes back to the fact that I have a wide and short monitor. Because of this it may seem better to fill up space vertically by adding a vertical app bar, but I have so many apps and usually work in text-documents that it would be better for me to have a horizontal app bar.
5. Unable to remove unneeded buttons. My app bar is going to fill up very fast. I do not need a workspace switcher, a home folder, the applications button, or the trash visible in this app bar. I will use these rarely and I would rather make room for apps I use often.
6. Apps at the bottom of the app bar does not adjust context menu accordingly.
However I do like how Ubuntu is finally clipping unseen areas. I am using dual monitors and the one you are looking at is the short one. So when i take a screenshot I can see black area below. In previous versions I would be able to see the overflow. Does this also mean we are finally double image buffering as well?
7. I am unable to change desktop effects. I don't need a massive fancy shadow on every window. I prefer speed over desktop effects (but use Ubuntu for non-free software support).
8. I cannot move the Files & Folder button to the top. I would have use for this context menu since there is no longer a places button in the top panel. But I would rather have it at the top so I can access it easier.
9. Cannot clear recent file's history. As a developer I've worked on a couple adult entertainment related sites. I like to keep these hidden from my little ones for obvious reasons but now it seems there is no way to remove them from recent file history. There should be a context menu for this.
I installed Natty in a VirtualBox VM (running in XP), and all I see is an empty Desktop with background. No Launcher or anything else to run anything.
It is obviously running, because I can right click on the desktop, create a folder and navigate round. If I navigate to an application I can run it.
Rebooting to Classic works (if maybe a little slower than 10.10).
I wanted to try Unity, and assume it is trying to run.
I just upgraded to 11.4 and was surprised to find my desktop completely changed. The main reason I use Ubuntu is because I could customize the desktop environment how I wanted. Now I can't seem to move or adjust anything. Does anyone know how to move the menu and launch bars? The biggest thing I want to do is move the launch bar to the bottom of the screen.

View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter doing a wubi install of 11.04 onto my hp g56-116a because of it having all 4 primary partitions in use, natty seems to be running abnormally slow Not throughout, but there's major slowdowns when doing something like opening a new browser window or similar task.
Sometimes it will just spontaneously log out. The slowdowns are so bad the mouse cursor will become completely unresponsive/laggy for 20-25 seconds. My laptop has 4GB RAM and an intel celeron t3500 cpu, which zips windows 7 along speedily, but its running this install a lot slower than my old laptop ran in,with 2GB RAM and a slightly slower processor.
I am running Natty on a Dell Inspiron 6000 under dual boot. Now Ubuntu refuses to load. GRUB goes along to a point where the final message in both regular and recovery modes is 81.8921591 atal: SRST failed (errno=-16). Is there any way I can recover short of having a professional rescue my data from the hard disk and totally redoing the install. I have had this problem in previous versions but never fatally before. My computer works fine under Windows.
