I decided to have a go at running conky on my 11.04 desktop. It isn't showing any wifi activity, even though i'm obviously connected. also, is there any place where i can see the whole list of options that can be added to it?

I have my conky set up so it displays fortune, then I run a script to add enough spaces so that even if fortune is any amount of lines long, it will take up exactly 17 lines, and after that, it displays the time. The problem I have is that a lot of the time, the fortune will display fine, but the time will only display what default_shade_color is (black).

is there a built-in linux script that does what mine does? and why is conky only drawing the fortune in the right colors? PS the reason I want it all on one conky, is I'm running openbox and the right-click menu only works for stuff drawn to the root screen.
edit: When I don't use the script the colors work just fine, but the spacing's off, obviously. sceenshot-1 shows it.

I had a problem with the new network manager a week ago and got it solved with help from the forum so now I'm back again. I have a dual boot with Windows 7 (I have to use it when serving my corporate masters) so I wasn't in my Fedora partition much this week.
I just noticed this and I'm positive it wasn't doing it before my network manager problem but I'm not sure when it started or if they're related.
I'm running F15. The machine is an HP Elitebook 8440p and has a wifi light that is also a touch button to turn the wireless on/off. Whenever there is activity on the network now it blinks between orange and blue. I know that isn't really a big deal but it's really annoying and is driving me completely nuts!! The normal behavior is orange when it's off, solid blue when it's on (or connected) and blinks orange/blue just while it's connecting. During network activity it's always been just solid blue and that's what I want.
I found a script that some Ubuntu users said fixed the same problem but when I tried to copy it the directory they said to put it in "/etc/network/ifup.d" doesn't exist. I'm assuming that's a distro difference between Ubuntu and Fedora?
Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas how to fix it?

I posted this on Launchpad under bug# 569445 and though I'm certain someone in our heroic development community will have a look at it eventually, maybe someone can help me here in the meantime, or at least provide some background info. Maybe a little reassurance that Ubuntu isn't broken for my Wifi is all I need.

I changed the file permissions to be executed and named it .conky-startup.sh.
Then I went to System>Preferences>Startup Applications and created a new entry that points to my script file. When I restarted my system, Conky didn't start. If I try to run the file from Nautilus or the Terminal, nothing happens.
I've upgraded from Karmic 64-bit kubuntu to the RC build for Lucid. I have two pcs connected to two monitors via an Aten dual head KVM switch. With the new release I only get a background slideshow on one monitor. I can get an image on the first monitor by right clicking and choosing Next Wallpaper image, but it never changes. When I select Desktop Activity Settings both monitors go entirely blank, except for the mouse cursor. The Display Multiple Monitors screen has ticks in all the multiple monitor checkboxes and Identify All Displays correctly identifies both monitors.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have conky on my desktop, and it works most of the time. The only times I've noticed problems are when I do large file transfers from my computer to an external HD.
What happens during large file transfers is that Conky crashes, and then I realize that my desktop is also "dead" (as in, I can't highlight anything. The icon for my external HD is gone, even though it is still mounted and accessible. Right-clicking doesn't do anything either.). I tried Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, but that didn't work either. I can log out and back in to get everything working again, but that's a bit of a pain.
I'm using the GNOME desktop on Ubuntu 9.10.
what is running there are conky - transparent background and terminal - also transparent background AND undecorated.how do I integrate these into the desktop (I mean how do I make them both auto-start on startup and more importantly how do I make the terminal auto-undecorated from the beginning?)I found some script for conky - trying that out right now, gonna let you know how it turns out.

I just upgraded to 11.04 just this morning and I tried to get on the internet. Under the networking thing there is only wired connections. How do I fix this. I have a dell vostro 1000 with a Dell 1390 WLAN mini-card.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to work out with Conky on my Ubuntu 10.04 x64.
Conky is set to Top Left alignment, but it doesn't seem to be ending up there at all. After changing all of the different alignments, it doesn't seem to move around much at all.

My other issue, which may have something to do with the way my Conky is set up, is that I have a couple of icons on the desktop, but they only show up when I put my mouse over them, and in the next couple of seconds they go away. It seems to be related to the refresh frequency of conky, which seems to be all of my issues right now.
Another note, this conky code is essentially pulled directly from the conky website.

got a dell inspirion 15r (i think), and it comes w/ win7 (I HATE Win7) so i made him let me dual-boot with ubuntu maverick meerkat. (he wouldn't let me get rid of win7 cuz thats what his parents use.) It installed successfully, so we booted into it, and there was no wifi networks. I thought it was because wifi was disabled so i press the button i think its F5 but still nothing. I thought it might have been the comp but i booted into win7 (Que the Beethoven's fifth)... and it worked in win7 (thats a first) can someone help me. Oh and i forgot i used that terminal command to unblock wifi
View 2 Replies View RelatedI accidentally deleted a system directory so I had to reinstall. I reinstalled, and setup my users again in the same way. When I tried to copy my user files from a saved source, they now appear on the desktop in mass. What I expect is that only files in the Desktop directory show on the desktop, instead all files in the home directory show on the desktop, less the dot files. I can not figure out how the system controls what files show up on the desktop. Comparing the problem user to a working user failed to disclose the difference.

conky draws the root background for sudo transparency, not the desktop image, so solve by using real transparency, but this means any desktop icon blinks or just vanishes, what to do,looked around for a while. but no further along, anyone else had this problem, anyone else solved this problem?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to Maverick over the weekend from Lucid, and at school yesterday, I could no longer connect to the campus wifi network in my office. I have no problem connecting to the wifi network at home, and my phone still sees and connects to the campus wifi network, so I think the problem is with my laptop (Gateway T-6345u), which doesn't even detect the campus network. As of last week, it connected automatically, and now it can't even see the network.
