After having been a Gnome user since initial release in 1999, I have now upgraded to Gnome3. I figured despite everyone's moaning, over 10 years of a successful desktop means I should give it a fair go.
One thing: If I have a music player such as Rhythmbox open, how can I change track without breaking my current task focus and heading to "Activities" now that the notification area icon is no more? I change track alot, do I really want to change windows to do it?
I've never really bothered about installing themes etc., to KDE and I've always just used the standard KDE setup so I am a bit of a newbie when it comes themes. But I was out the other day with a mate and he had got his Macbook and I quite liked the Bottom of the screen quick launch bar they have. Is there a program or widget I can install to KDE 4.4.4. So I can have a Mac style quick launch bar? And hopefully something that wont use to many system resources.
I've just installed Ubuntu and noticed that there are two tool bars. The one at the top says applications, places, system and then there is also one at the bottom. Is it possible to have just a single toolbar that has a "start button", "quick launch icons" and open applications?
I am trying to solve multiple issues with my 64x natty install using gnome3 ppa( official ppa from gnome3). I have this setup on two machines, one is a fresh install the other is a upgrade. They both have most of these issues. Here they are: 1) Nautilus will not launch from the favorites bar. It does launch from a shortcut on the desktop. It will not run from the terminal unless I am root. 2) Number lock is disabled at startup (enabled in my bios). I used to be able to enable after nattty had started, I no longer can, though num lock light is lit - number keypad does not work!
3) I have set gnome3 set to let nautilus draw the background and desktop, I get a white screen at boot until Nautilus is launched then I get a background and some desktop icons(no computer or network icons). If I plug in a usb drive the icon appears on my desktop, when I select it I loose the background and have to select it again.
4) Wireless randomly will drop the connection, have to reconnect, sometimes it will, sometimes I have to reboot. I have Fedora installed on a 2nd hard drive on the machine with a clean install and the only similarity is it displays the default desktop until I launch Nautilus, then my background and desktop are displayed with all of the icons. From there on out Fedora has none of these issues. I have used Ubuntu Gnome and XFCE as my only os since 6.0 and have never had this many problems. Both machines would not run the gdm because of Nvidia issues after the upgrade and clean install. I DO NOT want to give up on Ubuntu as I tell all my friends and family to use it.
I would like to know when usb inserted, its showing cant mount when i clicked details its showing bad blocks in beginning , and smething in /dev/sd6. Can i knw why usb drive cant be mounted automatically , even if its set to do so, and to cope the error mentioned above
Perhaps there is something on the net about this, however I couldn't find the correct keywords (and there are many other but similar problems) and didn't find anything. You know that when logging in, if you enter a wrong password, you'll have to wait a few seconds before giving it another try to avoid bruteforcing. However, when I enter the correct password in 11.04, it makes me wait a few seconds and then loads my desktop (fluxbox in my case, but the same problem remains in Unity).
I keep finding myself needing to type Unicode characters from the Latin alphabet such as or . is there any other way to do it other then using the character map application or cut and paste. It would be nice to use the alt - number pad technique from windows.

I am new to ubuntu. I was on windows 7 32 bit, computer was running slow with viruses and full hard drive so i installed ubuntu 10.10 32 bit as i believe it to be more secure. Before installing Ubuntu OS I made a backup DVD-RW data disk, it had my brothers holiday pics when he went turkey and morroco. Once I installed ubuntu I needed a DVD-RW and quick formatted the wrong disk. Is it possible to recover the data? I've read somewhere that the data is possibly can be recover.
I am running Ubuntu 11.04 on two machines; older dell desktop and an acer laptop. I have loaded quick synergy on both but can't get it to work. I have followed the install guides using proper server/client names in appropriate boxes etc. Removed and re-installed and still no luck. One question does multiple work spaces which seems to be a default setting interfere with quick synergy? Maybe there is an easy explanation to this problem but I haven't found one so far and have been searching the net for a couple of days.
I am trying to burn Ubuntu Server to a CD-R and I am getting a quick error after each burn attempt. I am burning on the slowest speed. I want to resolve this without using up all of my CD's. When I try to burn the ISO it shows 39.5 MB of free space on the disc when this is a brand new CD-R with 700 MB of free space. When I look at the newly burned disc it looks like Ubuntu Server is on the CD
I just upgraded my computer to Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid. Whenever I open Synaptic Package Manager it opens normally. If I type into the "Quick search" box, when I try to type in a word as soon as I type the second letter Synaptic immediately closes. However, if I click on the full "Search" button, this function works as it should. I just can't use Quick Search. Synaptic closes every time.
I uninstalled synaptic from a terminal by typing [CODE] apt-get remove synaptic. Then I reinstalled using [CODE] apt-get install synaptic. Reinstalling did not fix the problem. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?
Having one issue with evolution not showing html websites showing up in email like verizon sending a promo. I have gone to edit, preferences, mail preferences, html messages and have always load images from the internet chosen. I have also added sender to contacts. When I try to connect a projector to my laptop (already running) and hit the fn+f7 (the designated button for switching screen), nothing happens. I see "no source found" on projector screen and my laptop screen works perfectly. Now if I restart the laptop with the projector connected, I see all the intial booting messages on the projector screen (not on my laptop), then the gnome login screen appears on both the projector screen and laptop (when the login screen appears on laptop it looks like it has lower resolution than my usual laptop resolution). But immediately after I log in, my laptop screen goes blank, and projector screen becomes the only active screen.
If I restart without the projector, again all normal operation on laptop screen is restored.
I feel like I am missing some very silly options. Any help is appreciated.
Here is the output of xrandr when the laptop is connected:
What is the code snippet required to get an image to repeat vertically up a page? I can only find info relating to repeating *background* images in my search attempts, and this is just a regular image file which I want to repeat over the pre-existing page background. I'd like it to repeat all the way up the extreme left hand edge of the page. Say the image is called abd.jpg and is in the same folder as the index.html.
Launchy is a great piece of software, I use it on Windows mainly for quickly accessing folders. I love its auto-indexing in the background, and hardly ever browse through folders manually these days, solves me lots of time.
On Linux (Ubuntu 9.10), I usually "live" in the terminal, however. Therefore, Launchy on Linux (or Gnome Do, or its other replacements) are not what I need - as it opens the file manager, and I don't need the file manager.
What I do need is something that indexes my folders and lets me cd into them quickly in the terminal. For example:
It has been a long time i dreamed to get ubuntu and now i have my ubuntu 10.04 installed. Is there a quick and easy way to install 32-bit software on my 64-bit Fedora 11 machine? I've got some software that is 32-bit but can't use them because I lack those library files etc. needed to run them. The programs I'm trying to get to work are : LightZone 3.7 and Bibblepro both photo software.I'd hate to go back to Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit (it worked and all that was need were ia32libs I believe.)
How could I add quick edit mode in fedora terminal?i.e. In terminal, if highlight a word and and press enter, it will copied to clipboard and click mouse right click, I should be able to copy like if we enable quick edit mode in Windows.
Assume that I've got a folder called "Stuffs". So in fedora 15 you don't have a desktop folder, I mean you can't use it like we were used to. Even if you activate the option that allows you to use the "desktop", it is very uncomfortable because you can't minimize windows quickly. So my question is: Is there a way of put a "Link" in the overview, so I can get in to the overview and write "Stuffs" in the search bar and get my "Stuffs" folder open ?
