Fedora :: Systemd Boot Script - Alternative Desktop To Gnome3

May 30, 2011

Two general questions about Fedora 15 before I decide to install. My system typically starts in about 32 seconds, with a distro using normal boot scripts. With Ubuntu and upstart it reaches the gdm login screen quicker in around 18 - 24 seconds. With systemd does anyone get a noticeable difference?

Also, is it possible to use an alternative desktop to gnome3 in Fedora 15. I've tried Gnome3 with Arch and its very slick although not for me, as I like panels and desktop applets. (I should add that my times quoted were mesaured using bootchart with a default set of services, no tweaking).

CentOS 5 :: Desktop Alternative To Ubuntu And Fedora?

Mar 31, 2009

I'm getting really fed up of all the bugs on Ubuntu and Fedora. Currently I manage 20-25 Optiplex 755 computers on my company. I tried Ubuntu and while it was great because of the repositories, the machines do not shutdown properly. Suspend is also a hit and miss. Well, I'm totally fed up of this. On the server side I use mostly CentOS and I am extremelly happy (except for the lack of VMI) with it.

Do you think CentOS will be a good alternative for my desktops? Is it comparable to Redhat Enterprise Desktop?

OpenSUSE :: Reload Default Gnome3 Desktop?

Jun 23, 2011

I was playing with a theme (Atolm-GS) and followed the install instructions which stated to back up the /usr/share/gnome-shell/theme directory, and replace it with the one from the theme. I did this, logged off, logged on, got my wallpaper for a second, then the Oh No Screen. I logged off, logged in to IceWM, replaced the theme folder with the original, logged back in to Gnome3 and same thing. Alt+F4 does not get rid of the OH No screen. My ~/.xsessions-errors file contains the following:

/etc/X11/xim: Checking whether an input method should be started. sourcing /etc/sysconfig/language to get the value of INPUT_METHOD INPUT_METHOD is not set or empty (no user selected input method). Trying to start a default input method for the locale en_US.UTF-8. There is no default input method for the current locale. Dummy input method "none" (do not use any fancy input method by default)

Debian Configuration :: Systemd Boot Is Now Verbose

Aug 13, 2015

When I first started running Jessie 8.1 I noticed that after the disk check the boot was quiet, ie. no messages to the terminal . However, something has happened and now when I boot the machine I get a verbose listing of all the processes being started. Is there a way to change it back to the way it was? In other words a quiet boot. The only thing I know of that has been 'anomalous' behavior is the other day when doing a mp4 to avi conversion, using avconv, I apparently had an over temp condition which closed my LXDE session and brought me to the login prompt. Don't know what other info one may need but feel free to ask for more, if necessary.

Ubuntu :: 64x Natty Install Using Gnome3 Ppa ( Official Ppa From Gnome3)?

May 5, 2011

I am trying to solve multiple issues with my 64x natty install using gnome3 ppa( official ppa from gnome3). I have this setup on two machines, one is a fresh install the other is a upgrade. They both have most of these issues. Here they are: 1) Nautilus will not launch from the favorites bar. It does launch from a shortcut on the desktop. It will not run from the terminal unless I am root. 2) Number lock is disabled at startup (enabled in my bios). I used to be able to enable after nattty had started, I no longer can, though num lock light is lit - number keypad does not work!

3) I have set gnome3 set to let nautilus draw the background and desktop, I get a white screen at boot until Nautilus is launched then I get a background and some desktop icons(no computer or network icons). If I plug in a usb drive the icon appears on my desktop, when I select it I loose the background and have to select it again.

4) Wireless randomly will drop the connection, have to reconnect, sometimes it will, sometimes I have to reboot. I have Fedora installed on a 2nd hard drive on the machine with a clean install and the only similarity is it displays the default desktop until I launch Nautilus, then my background and desktop are displayed with all of the icons. From there on out Fedora has none of these issues. I have used Ubuntu Gnome and XFCE as my only os since 6.0 and have never had this many problems. Both machines would not run the gdm because of Nvidia issues after the upgrade and clean install. I DO NOT want to give up on Ubuntu as I tell all my friends and family to use it.

Debian Configuration :: Wheezy - After Update Systemd Turn Off Laptop Screen On Boot

Sep 25, 2015

I decided to update all the software on my computer. Fortunately, it upgraded kernel version 3.14 to 3.16. I was happy to learn that suspend now worked on my laptop by calling pm-suspend, but it did not worked by closing the lid. So I search and found on debian's website that installing systemd and adding some config lines in /etc/systemd/logind.conf would sove the issue. So I followed the procedure and did like instructed, to end up with a computer that boots on black screen.

The last verbrose line I see on boot up is "kvm disabled by bios" and then it shutdown down the screen. The computer works, as I can login and shutdown by doing those operation blindly.

I tried removing systemd but it still does not work. If I use the old kernel 3.14 I can boot without any problem, but if I use kernel 3.16, I boot to a black screen. I remember successfully booting in 3.16 before installing systemd.

Ubuntu :: Finding 11.04 Unity Desktop Alternative?

May 16, 2011

Having been totally happy with Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 but after a recent fresh install of 11.04 I find myself extremely stressed out with the desk top.I absolutely hate the unity desktop. It's flakey, unreliable, with random mouseclick issues, random application crashes and poor performance both in the increased time it now takes me to navigate to the apps that I want to fire up and in terms of really slow rendering of menus.It's awkward to start up multiple apps (I typically have my IDE, eMail client, browser, ssh terminals to remote servers and at least one terminal running at any one time)

I use my system as a serious development platform and I have come to the conclusion that 11.04 in it's default configuration format (and also with the classic log in being just as flakey) has to go. It's costing me too much in lost development time.So I'm faced with a decision, move back to using 10.10, stick with 11.04 but find a very much better desktop alternative to unity (and I don't mean the classic log in options as already explained) or I ditch Ubuntu in favour of an alternative distribution.

Fedora :: Simple Display Of Systemd Service Sequence?

Jul 13, 2011

What's the best way to get a list of the start order of services from systemd? Yes, I've tried

Code:

systemctl --order

This looks like the output I would expect, except that if that list is the system service start order, then my system is hosed. I certainly hope that my system is not starting nfs service before all the /usr/export filesystems are mounted.

I tried

Code:

systemd --test --system

but that generates over 22 thousand lines of gibberish! I filtered that with

Code:

systemd --test --system | grep -- -> | grep Unit | grep -i service

And it's less gibberish, but it's ALMOST the reverse order of the first command, and still pretty crazy.Ultimately, I need to discover, and fix the order of the services started by systemd, because they were mangled during the upgrade from Fedora 14 I hope that "systemctl --order" is either not the real deal, or I'm reading it wrong. Because if it is, I'm afraid I have a huge problem to fix.

Fedora Installation :: How Can I Install Upstart And Sysv INSTEAD Of Systemd

Jul 30, 2011

I've proven that the the D in systemD is for DISASTER.At first, I thought that the dozens of problems I had with startup, shutdown, and services, was due to my upgrading from Fedora 14. But now that I've tried a fresh install, I have a new set of different problems. Basically DBUS broke after I installed Samba, and no combo of reinstalling either of them fixed anything. So here goes my third Fedora 15 install.

During a fresh install, can I de-select systemd and select upstart and sysv instead? systemd is not visible in the GUI installer. Do I need some Kickstart hack or something? Is this possible at all?

Fedora :: Distinction Between F And Gnome3?

Jun 17, 2011

This may seem like an oddball question, but I ask because I don't know. When working with Fedora 15, which parts of what I see on screen are actually Fedora, and which parts of Gnome 3? I'm trying to understand where the separation lies between the OS and the shell, and I'm not quite clear when I'm "doing things" if I'm using a feature of Fedora, or Gnome 3. I know when I'm in a terminal window, that's the shell/Gnome3. But what else that I do is actually the shell, and not Fedora?

Fedora :: F15 Gnome3 Alternatives?

Jun 24, 2011

F15 running on my Dell Latitude 505 laptop. During installation (last week) I got "Gnome3 not fully supported - using fallback mode". I found out later that my Intel 855 video doesn't support 3D, which Gnome3 requires.

System seems to run fine and boots into fallback video. But I'd sure like to have access to my "desktop" so I can drag and drop folders, etc. there. Currently I now have to open the Desktop folder, and then drag and drop, etc. And without an "active" desktop screen, added devices (external drives, cameras, etc.) don't show up unless I open the Desktop folder. Is there an alternative to Gnome3 I can install? I assume without the need for 3D which my Intel video 855 doesn't support.

If there's an alternative or two, could someone point me to exactly how to install them? If there's a more appropriate forum here for this request,

For example, is it advisable to remove gdm in favour of kdm? Are there gtk/gnome programs that are "better" than kde equivalents and are thus best left untouched, along with their dependencies? finally, somewhat unrelated, do you know good tutorials for gnome2.X expatriates to learn modern kde?

Fedora :: No Fading Animation In Gnome3, F15?

Jul 25, 2011

I've recently decided to switch from KDE 4.6 to Gnome 3. I've always been a KDE user, since version 2, really. But I happen to really like the new look of Gnome. To me it looks more professional somehow. Very little in terms of distractions.On both my laptop and my desktop, I have installed the Gnome 3 packages through Packagekit and on both machines it runs nice and smooth. There is one difference, though. On the desktop machine, when I lock the screen, it goes to black instantly. On the laptop, it fades to black. I really like the look of the fading animation and I'd like the desktop machine to do the same, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to do it.

The difference between both machines is that the laptop has an Intel graphics card whereas the desktop machine has an Nvidia 6800 GT, with the proprietary driver running. I followed Leigh's excellent guide to install that driver and it works like a charm. I do have desktop effects in KDE 4, so I know the driver is installed and running. I also am able to run hardware accelerated games in Wine without a problem.Being new to Gnome, especially Gnome 3, I have no idea where to look for these kinds of special effects. The System Settings program seems sort of Spartan and the gconf-editor doesn't show me anything that I can relate to this fading effect.
