Ubuntu :: Natty Update Manager GUI: Not Showing Progress

May 18, 2011

When I run the update manager in XUbuntu (natty/11:04) it does not show its progress while installing the upgrades.

After clicking on "install updates" and authenticating, there used to be a popup window with a progress bar and an option to show "details" but these appear to have disappeared in the last few days.

I don't recall switching these features off and there are no settings to restore them, available within the GUI. Is there another way of restoring this functionality?

If not, is a reinstall the way to go? If so what package(s) need re-installing? And in-case it is a configuration script, what files in my home directory need deleting to ensure a clean reinstall.

Ubuntu :: Natty - Appearance Fonts Not Showing Tahoma

Jul 14, 2011

After going to Appearance->Fonts, in Natty, I changed the "Window title font" from Tahoma to "Arial Black". Now I can't change it back because Tahoma isn't listed in the "Pick a Font" dialog. I don't know how I originally got Tahoma. I think it did that several versions of Ubuntu ago. How do I get it to show up in the "Pick a Font" dialog? I do have ttf-mscorefonts-installer installed.

Doing:
Code:
# dpkg -L ttf-mscorefonts-installer
shows that they are in this directory:
Code:
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts
But Tahoma is not in there?

Ubuntu :: 11.04 - Two Of Partitions Not Showing Up

Jul 12, 2011

Objective: To dual boot Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows 7
Problem: When I use Live USB and try to install Ubuntu 11.04, two of my partitions are not showing up.

System:
C2D 3.1 Ghz
6 Gb of Ram
Nvidia 8800 gt

More info:
I have a self built machine which is currently running windows 7 64 bit.
4 hard drives
2 x 1 TB (mirrored)
1 x 500 Gb (single)
1 x 320* Gb (Windows 7 is installed here) <--both do not show up in the installer
*Split into 247 Gb and 73.4 Gb partitions

fdisk -l output
Code:
Disk /dev/sda: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x76a81caa .....

This happens in Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04, the screen shot above was taken in 10.10. Also I can mount the 247 Gb partition in the Live USB, however doing so does not make it show up in the installer.

Things I have tried:
Unplugging all of the hard drives except for the 320 Gb hard drive, as a result not drives showed up in the installer but where present in Gparted and "Places".

Ubuntu :: Partitions Not Showing Up In Gparted?

Mar 7, 2010

I have what is a weird problem, at least I think it is. I deleted some files and now my partitions do not show up in Gparted. Instead, the entire disk shows up as unallocated space. I am still able to run every partition, one of which is ubuntu and another which is Windows without any other apparent problems. here is my fdisk -l:

Code:

Ubuntu :: Partitions/drives Sometimes Not Showing?

May 14, 2011

I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 from 10.10 about a week or so ago and since the upgrade when I boot into Ubuntu (I am running a dual boot Ubuntu and win7) other HDD's and partitions often do not show up anywhere on my system. For example I have an ntfs partition that I store music on so I can access it on either windows or ubuntu, as well as other partitions. When this issue occurs even my dvd drive appears not to exist. I have to reboot my machine sometimes 4 or 5 times before the drives/partitions show again. I had no issue like this before running the upgrade or using earlier versions of Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Ext3 Partition : Fdisk Is Not Showing Any Partitions On The Drive?

Apr 24, 2010

I had a 500gb hard drive that I wanted to use on my Ubuntu system as a media storage drive. The drive originally had two partitions on it,one was a Dell Recovery partition and the other was a Windows Vista partition. Using the Palimpsest Drive Utility that comes with Ubuntu, I deleted both partitions, created a Ext3 partition using 100% of the space and copied my data to the drive. After I finally got fstab to load the drive, I found another problem. First of all, when Grub loads, two options it offers are:

Windows Vista (loader) on sdc1
Windows Vista (loader) on sdc3

Aside from that, 100% of the drive is not being used by the Ext3 partition. It is showing 434.6gb available on the drive. Fdisk is not showing any other partitions on this drive, so A) why are the Windows loader options showing up under Grub and B) why do I not have 500gb available? Here is a copy of the output fdisk -l:

Code:
Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80000000000 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9726 cylinders

Server :: 4 Virtual Disk On AX4-5i / RHEL Showing 16 Partitions

Jul 29, 2010

I have 4 virtual disk on AX4-5i. RHEL for some reason shows 16 partitions in /proc/partitions. I got lot-lot of IO errors in dmesg. Some of those 16 partitions "work", others just give (on using fdisk for example): Unable to read /dev/sdb. On EMC I have 4 ports, so it might be somehow releated to this.

I've googled and read docs but got no idea what to do. Any experiences with EMC/RHEL/iSCSI - I just don't understand where those 16 (and half of them not working/giving lotof errors) come from? For example Citrix Xen on similar network conf can see/use same EMC thoughr iSCSI nicely. SO there should'nt be network/auth issues (not using CHAP btw). I got feeling that problem is on RHEL iscsi conf side.

Software :: Partitions On Older Drives Not Showing Up After Reboot?

That involved adding a single partition on 4 of my drives (3 older, 1 brand new - a replacement drive), using mdadm to create the array, etc. However, upon restarting the box, the 3 older drives do not show up as having partitions and hence mdadm cannot immediately start the array because 'there are not enough disks to start'.For example, if I do an ls command before I restart, I will see:

Code:

I'm attempting to install natty (really any ubuntu OS that will work) through an external usb drive. The only functional machine at my disposal for preparing and partitioning the external usb drive is a seperate intel ubuntu box. I understand that I need to create an Apple_Bootstrap partition with yaboot installed inside so openfirmware can recognize the usb drive as bootable.

how do I create an Apple_Bootstrap partition on my external usb drive through a regular x86 ubuntu box? is "mac-disk" or pdisk commands available for x86 machines if not how or where could I find software to do the job?

General :: Partitions Don't Appear While Installing Ubuntu 10.04

Apr 27, 2011

My computer is currently running on Windows 7 and I had a spare partition formatted as ntfs. At first I tried to install ubuntu to that partition. Everything was fine, ubuntu recognized my previously installed OS and all partitions. At some point during the installation, however, it is recommended to have another partition formatted as swap. Then I split the partition into two parts and formatted one as swap and one as ext3 using Acronis Disk Director.

Then I restarted my computer to install ubuntu to new partition. This time it did not recognize any of the partitions and said that "there are no operating system on this computer." The whole disk was appearing as one partition. At that time, I quitted installation and go back to Windows 7, it was working properly. I booted using Acronis Disk Director and partitions were in their proper place.I tried formatting back to ntfs and then to swap and ext3 again, nothing changed. (I also tried several other combinations, nothing worked.)

Ubuntu Installation :: Recommendation For Installing When There Are Already 4 Partitions?

Mar 15, 2011

I got a laptop that I'd like to install Ubuntu on (I've done this numerous times before). But this one already has 4 partitions on it, and the Ubuntu installer complained that you can't have more than four. I know you can make a logical or whatever partition that holds others sub-partitions, but I'm not sure the best way to do it without destroying data from the other partitions.

The existing partitions include: a recovery partition, the primary windows partition (large size), a small boot partition, and a special partition for hp software that can run without booting windows. Can I convert the windows partition into a logical partition or something like that which can be divided up, without wiping out the windows files and data there?

And yes I know I can use the wubi installer, but I prefer a more permanent solution (Ubuntu is my primary OS, but I don't want to wipe out Windows at this point).
