May 24, 2011I have upgraded my OpenSuse 11.4 to gnome3, and it works beautifully, but now. I want to be able to log in to old gnome desktop and I can't. I only have gnome 3 as my default gnome desktop now? Can I have my classic gnome desktop back without removing my gnome 3? Can I make Gnome 3 & my classic Gnome 2.3## co-exist so I get to choose at login?

Jun 23, 2011I was playing with a theme (Atolm-GS) and followed the install instructions which stated to back up the /usr/share/gnome-shell/theme directory, and replace it with the one from the theme. I did this, logged off, logged on, got my wallpaper for a second, then the Oh No Screen. I logged off, logged in to IceWM, replaced the theme folder with the original, logged back in to Gnome3 and same thing. Alt+F4 does not get rid of the OH No screen. My ~/.xsessions-errors file contains the following:
/etc/X11/xim: Checking whether an input method should be started. sourcing /etc/sysconfig/language to get the value of INPUT_METHOD INPUT_METHOD is not set or empty (no user selected input method). Trying to start a default input method for the locale en_US.UTF-8. There is no default input method for the current locale. Dummy input method "none" (do not use any fancy input method by default)

Ubuntu :: 64x Natty Install Using Gnome3 Ppa ( Official Ppa From Gnome3)?
May 5, 2011I am trying to solve multiple issues with my 64x natty install using gnome3 ppa( official ppa from gnome3). I have this setup on two machines, one is a fresh install the other is a upgrade. They both have most of these issues. Here they are: 1) Nautilus will not launch from the favorites bar. It does launch from a shortcut on the desktop. It will not run from the terminal unless I am root. 2) Number lock is disabled at startup (enabled in my bios). I used to be able to enable after nattty had started, I no longer can, though num lock light is lit - number keypad does not work!
3) I have set gnome3 set to let nautilus draw the background and desktop, I get a white screen at boot until Nautilus is launched then I get a background and some desktop icons(no computer or network icons). If I plug in a usb drive the icon appears on my desktop, when I select it I loose the background and have to select it again.
4) Wireless randomly will drop the connection, have to reconnect, sometimes it will, sometimes I have to reboot. I have Fedora installed on a 2nd hard drive on the machine with a clean install and the only similarity is it displays the default desktop until I launch Nautilus, then my background and desktop are displayed with all of the icons. From there on out Fedora has none of these issues. I have used Ubuntu Gnome and XFCE as my only os since 6.0 and have never had this many problems. Both machines would not run the gdm because of Nvidia issues after the upgrade and clean install. I DO NOT want to give up on Ubuntu as I tell all my friends and family to use it.

May 30, 2011Two general questions about Fedora 15 before I decide to install. My system typically starts in about 32 seconds, with a distro using normal boot scripts. With Ubuntu and upstart it reaches the gdm login screen quicker in around 18 - 24 seconds. With systemd does anyone get a noticeable difference?
Also, is it possible to use an alternative desktop to gnome3 in Fedora 15. I've tried Gnome3 with Arch and its very slick although not for me, as I like panels and desktop applets. (I should add that my times quoted were mesaured using bootchart with a default set of services, no tweaking).
Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Desktop Is Blank?
May 28, 2010I just recently installed 10.04 and the desktop look is nice, but all my applications, folders, games, firefox, etc... is missing. The only way for me to access anything basic is to browse through the fony folder I created just to try and find everything. getting at least my Firefox browser and some other basic applications. Oh and I noticed I don't have root access anymore either. I am the only one using the computer, but can't do a thing. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on my Acer Aspire One Netbook. So I have no HDD.

Jul 3, 2011I'm new to Ubuntu, so new that in fact that this is my first install of the Operating System. I'm currently using Ubuntu 11.04. At login screen, the bottom bar is present, but after I log in it disappears and all I'm left with is just the mouse cursor and the desktop background. This happens for both the Ubuntu and Ubuntu Classic choices. But both top and bottom bars are present when I choose the Ubuntu Classic (No Effects) and Ubuntu (Safe Mode) options. Is there a reason that this keeps happening? A bad install? Hardware can't support the new version of Ubuntu?

Jan 20, 2009I am running Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex dual-booting with Vista for work purposes. I have been running the two successfully for quite a few months now and am just getting to grips with it. I have lost my desktop at start-up. I get all the way past the Login to a blank desktop background (just colour - no image) and the only thing visible is a Terminal window. As I am not familiar with Linux command lines I can't do very much. I have even tried reinstalling Ubuntu which showed no error messages that I noticed but, I have the same result. At the moment I have used Supergrub to allow me to boot straight to Vista till I get things sorted out.

With the new release I only get a background slideshow on one monitor. I can get an image on the first monitor by right clicking and choosing Next Wallpaper image, but it never changes. When I select Desktop Activity Settings both monitors go entirely blank, except for the mouse cursor. The Display Multiple Monitors screen has ticks in all the multiple monitor checkboxes and Identify All Displays correctly identifies both monitors.

May 21, 2011An ubuntu-11.04 laptop is set to turn on the screensaver after 5 minutes of inactivity, and power management is set to blank the display after 15 minutes of inactivity. When the screen goes blank, you're supposed to be able to move the mouse to return to your Gnome desktop. This works sometimes, sometimes not. When it doesn't, moving the mouse doesn't eliminate the black screen, although I can see the mouse cursor. ctrl+alt+del does nothing, neither do alt+tab, alt+esc or ctrl+alt+esc. ctrl+alt+f1-12 work as they usually do, so I can "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart" from one of the TTYs, or via ssh.
I tested just now with setting the screensaver and power management display blanking to 1 minutes. After a minute the screen went blank (backlight on), and then after a second or two black (backlight off), and moving the mouse returned to Gnome as it should. So I don't know why sometimes it doesn't. Two questions:
1- Which program can I run, or which service can I restart, to return to Gnome without having to kill gdm and lose all open windows?
2- What's causing this?

Jun 2, 2011Following bad instructions too fast to reset the default keyring password I deleted the file .gnome2/login.keyring ! I can still login and get to a terminal and do instructions from there. I can also still login with root and a guest account. But my desktop is just blank and I can't, even as a root, access my files.

I can't explain how, but my desktop panel went blank, and is overloading the system to the point that I cant run other applications. I was able to run a Term session and confirm that the gnome-panel ps is using more than 65% of the cpu and 3.5 on RAM. I create a temp user to verify that is a user environment problem.

Jan 8, 2011I just put on my Linux PC now and after booting logging into the user a/c, it just gives a blank screen with the desktop wallpaper - no menu's or anything, so there's pretty much nothing I can do. I know I had removed the menu and replaced it with the dock (awn dock or something).
However, I can log in as root and root works fine (so I'm doing the update at the moment).
Coming back to my question, I used to know an Ubuntu command which I put in as sudo (terminal)and it used to work like a magic command which would literally restore and repair my linux installation - I even used it when I bought a new system and transferred my linux hard drive from my previous machine to the new one and this one command actually setup and prepared my linux installation to work smoothly in my new PC - just one command after connecting my h/drive in the new PC.

Ubuntu :: Updated To Gnome3 - Can't Log In
Apr 6, 2011I opened UbuntuTweak to find a new repository, Gnome3, available.
I selected it, and tried to install it. I was told I had a broken package, and to fix it first.
I closed Tweak, and opened Synaptic, and clicked fix broken packages, then select all updates. It updated.
I went to restart...and now I can't log in. It brings up the login menu, but the "session" tab at the bottom is grayed out.
If I attempt to login, it seems to accept it, then goes black, and right back to the login screen.
