View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to solve multiple issues with my 64x natty install using gnome3 ppa( official ppa from gnome3). I have this setup on two machines, one is a fresh install the other is a upgrade. They both have most of these issues. Here they are: 1) Nautilus will not launch from the favorites bar. It does launch from a shortcut on the desktop. It will not run from the terminal unless I am root. 2) Number lock is disabled at startup (enabled in my bios). I used to be able to enable after nattty had started, I no longer can, though num lock light is lit - number keypad does not work!
3) I have set gnome3 set to let nautilus draw the background and desktop, I get a white screen at boot until Nautilus is launched then I get a background and some desktop icons(no computer or network icons). If I plug in a usb drive the icon appears on my desktop, when I select it I loose the background and have to select it again.
4) Wireless randomly will drop the connection, have to reconnect, sometimes it will, sometimes I have to reboot. I have Fedora installed on a 2nd hard drive on the machine with a clean install and the only similarity is it displays the default desktop until I launch Nautilus, then my background and desktop are displayed with all of the icons. From there on out Fedora has none of these issues. I have used Ubuntu Gnome and XFCE as my only os since 6.0 and have never had this many problems. Both machines would not run the gdm because of Nvidia issues after the upgrade and clean install. I DO NOT want to give up on Ubuntu as I tell all my friends and family to use it.
Is it possible to install Gnome3 as a separate desktop, ie. selectable from the login screen. So I have the option to choose Gnome2 or Gnome3 ? If so, How would I do it ?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have upgraded my OpenSuse 11.4 to gnome3, and it works beautifully, but now. I want to be able to log in to old gnome desktop and I can't. I only have gnome 3 as my default gnome desktop now? Can I have my classic gnome desktop back without removing my gnome 3? Can I make Gnome 3 & my classic Gnome 2.3## co-exist so I get to choose at login?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm slowly getting used to Gnome 3 and trying to give it a chance. After a few oddities (like it swallowing my Gnome Shell and Tilda invocations because I use Super in them) then I think I'm slowly getting used to it. There are still some things I miss from Compiz, but it has potential and I like some bits (the notifications and dialogs).I don't know what got upgraded, but my themes seemed to be working before yet today I've got the default Sonar rather than my darker Sonar theme with a fixed Chromium style. I've managed to change the titlebar theme, but I can't change the GTK theme or the icon theme.
Running "gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface icon-theme" reports "Tango-green", but I still have the default icon theme and using Appearances only partially works.Running "gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-theme" reports "SonarLighter" (the menu bar is lighter to match the Uniq theme) but I'm definitely seeing Sonar.I've tried gnome-tweak-tool from someone's OBS, but various dependencies seem to be missing (first it bails with the wrong GI version, then I updated some other bits and tried again, but even after switching a dozen or more packages then it never started).

Fresh Install. Used Gnome3 link from here
openSUSE:GNOME 3.0 - openSUSE
Worked Yesterday. Not today
I was playing with a theme (Atolm-GS) and followed the install instructions which stated to back up the /usr/share/gnome-shell/theme directory, and replace it with the one from the theme. I did this, logged off, logged on, got my wallpaper for a second, then the Oh No Screen. I logged off, logged in to IceWM, replaced the theme folder with the original, logged back in to Gnome3 and same thing. Alt+F4 does not get rid of the OH No screen. My ~/.xsessions-errors file contains the following:
/etc/X11/xim: Checking whether an input method should be started. sourcing /etc/sysconfig/language to get the value of INPUT_METHOD INPUT_METHOD is not set or empty (no user selected input method). Trying to start a default input method for the locale en_US.UTF-8. There is no default input method for the current locale. Dummy input method "none" (do not use any fancy input method by default)

I am running OpenSUSE 11.4 on my laptop and I decided to try out the Gnome 3 shell. I really like the design and I like the way it functions so I would like to keep using it, but it seems as though every time I install a new application or package it breaks Gnome 3. This is really frustrating because when I then try to log in it just gives me that cryptic error message that im sure you all have heard about "Oh No! Something went wrong!" or something like that and then it tells me to log out.
I know a fair bit about linux in general, but im no expert by any stretch of the imagination (my experiences have been with Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Linux Mint, and some older distros) so im only used to the Apt-get package manager and I find zypper to not be very understandable. So I don't know if im breaking Gnome 3 every time I install something because of some dependencies not getting installed. My laptop is running a Intel cure 2 duo processor and an Intel mobile graphics chipset (which runs gnome 3 fine normally).
I was having some trouble with dual display on my laptop, so I loaded the system using the nv graphics driver. I got some message from gnome3 saying that my display configuration wasn't supported, and then it fell back to something that looks similar to gnome2. I switched back to the nouveau driver, but gnome3 didn't come back. Does anybody know how to switch it back?

openSUSE:GNOME features - openSUSE
Gnome 3 released yesterday but I see there is n activity so far in terms of re-spin. let me know if I'm missing something or the re-spin is not going to take place anymore. I was eagerly waiting for the GNOME3 so that I can use the respin version of OpenSUSE.
Ever since I moved to GNOME3 and every time I mouse right click and select "Properties" in Nautilus, there is no response. In fact it only freezes the browser and I have to force to kill it.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have recently changed to using gnome3 shell and after an initial familiarisation i find its usability far better than other desktops and judging by the recent articles and blogs it will be the future so the earlier people start using it the better it will be. I am sure there will be a few bugs to fix, but one thing I have noticed is that in the applications list the app for 'Desk Top Effects' is there, given that gnome 3 does not use compiz nad actually uses clutter why is it there. My curiosity got the better of me and i tried to enable it, which resulted in immeadiate crash!!

I have SUSE DVD and have set local(OD) repository priority to 80 in order to get most packages from DVD. Inspite of that YaST pulls packages from online repositories, it may be the latest version. I have 8 MbPS dsl but the YaST download speeds are around 500B. How do I change mirrors of repositories. In my opinion this has nothing to do with ipv6, I use ipv6 for openBSD and it get good browsing speeds. Im trying to set kdm4 login manager but it doesnt start after enabling for YaST-/etc/sysconfig.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have installed openSUSE with Gnome3.
I had to install the nVidia proprietary drives so the OS would boot into Gnome3 and not fail safe mode. Without the proprietary drivers installed the display settings said:

After installing the nVidia drivers Gnome3 works in one monitor, but I would like to be able to use my other two monitors (totaling three with two video cards.)
When I run nvidia-settings to generate an xorg.conf file it hangs, so I used nvidia-xorgconf to generate the xorg file and then used nvidia-settings to configure my extra screens.
This fails with a permissions error, running sudo nvidia-settings fails with the following error:

So, I ran nvidia-settings, saved the settings file to my /home/$USER dir, then copied xorg.conf to /etc/X11/
Logging out and logging back into Gnome fails with the error:
This problem extends to Ubuntu running Gnome3, so my thinking is:
a) Imma id10t and something in my xorg.conf file is wrong,
b) there is an issue with Gnome3/nVidia/Multiple displays.
I would really like to use Gnome3, it works on multiple other machines (ironically all ATI devices) just not the machine I use all day long...
Here is my xorg.conf file as generated by nvidia-settings.

openSUSE 11.3 and 11.4 share a swap partition (although this presents a problem in hibernation/resumption), and have happily co-existed for some time. I just installed GNOME 3 on the 11.4 platform, with some minor problems. After shutting down 11.4 w/ GNOME3, booting of 11.3 (KDE) was somewhat messed: workspaces were reduced to one (1), window decorations were those of GNOME 2 (yes, GNOME 2 as installed on 11.3, NOT GNOME 3), and all windows were named "xxxxx (as sean)" (such as "bash (as sean)" or "gkrellm (as sean)") (where "sean" is the username). Curiously, the window background and widgets were KDE, as was the menu.
A clean logout and login seemed to restore the desktop. Assuming a fluke, I repeated the sequence, with the same results. I re-booted 11.4/GNOME 3, shut it down and re-booted 11.3 with "noresume" in GRUB, and all was as it should be.
My guess is that GNOME3 is leaving something(s) in the swap partition that is confusing 11.3 (KDE). This is not a critical problem for me, but I think it should be reported. Question: should it be reported against : a) GNOME 3, b) 11.4, c) 11.3, d) KDE 4.6 or e) all or any combination of the above ?

View 1 Replies View RelatedThis may seem like an oddball question, but I ask because I don't know. When working with Fedora 15, which parts of what I see on screen are actually Fedora, and which parts of Gnome 3? I'm trying to understand where the separation lies between the OS and the shell, and I'm not quite clear when I'm "doing things" if I'm using a feature of Fedora, or Gnome 3. I know when I'm in a terminal window, that's the shell/Gnome3. But what else that I do is actually the shell, and not Fedora?
View 3 Replies View RelatedF15 running on my Dell Latitude 505 laptop. During installation (last week) I got "Gnome3 not fully supported - using fallback mode". I found out later that my Intel 855 video doesn't support 3D, which Gnome3 requires.
System seems to run fine and boots into fallback video. But I'd sure like to have access to my "desktop" so I can drag and drop folders, etc. there. Currently I now have to open the Desktop folder, and then drag and drop, etc. And without an "active" desktop screen, added devices (external drives, cameras, etc.) don't show up unless I open the Desktop folder. Is there an alternative to Gnome3 I can install? I assume without the need for 3D which my Intel video 855 doesn't support.
If there's an alternative or two, could someone point me to exactly how to install them? If there's a more appropriate forum here for this request,
has anyone tried to use Mikogo under Fedora 15 with Gnome 3, i have tried with the instructions on the site but nothing happens, it might be because the app is not gnome 3 ready or something I am missing.[URL].. the way it is supposed to work, you just download it and run it like blender.. and it should start a task bar app (the reason why i think it does nothing) and then you can use it..
View 6 Replies View RelatedI opened UbuntuTweak to find a new repository, Gnome3, available.
I selected it, and tried to install it. I was told I had a broken package, and to fix it first.
I closed Tweak, and opened Synaptic, and clicked fix broken packages, then select all updates. It updated.
I went to restart...and now I can't log in. It brings up the login menu, but the "session" tab at the bottom is grayed out.
If I attempt to login, it seems to accept it, then goes black, and right back to the login screen.

and just now, I was updating and upgrading my system via terminal. I sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and install , update everything, when I restart my computer, everything was gone back to normal, as in the gnome-shell interface, and there are no extension.
What should I do to get it back? do I need to follow the tutorial in webupd8 again? and , is there anyone out there, experience the same thing like me?
I have installed Gnome3 from gnome3-team PPA. Now the desktop has both gtk-2 as well as gtk-3 applications. I have observed that gtk-2 applications use a different theme while gtk-3 applications use a different one. Using gnome-tweak-tool, I'm able to change theme for gtk-3 applications, but I don't seem to be able to find a way to change the theme of gtk-2 applications.

For example, if I have several terminal windows open, I can't cycle through all of them by just pressing Alt+Tab repeatedly. Now the system just displays one terminal icon and icons for each terminal window, but if I keep pressing Tab (Alt being down all the time), it does not switch the window.
I want back the old behavior of the Alt+Tab keys!
