Feb 27, 2010I just went out and bought a 19" flat screen LCD monitor. Plugged it in and it is not working correctly. When I start the computer the bios info will show up on the screen, then it goes to the screen that let's you choose an O/S if you were to dual boot. After clicking "enter" it will show the first line of the boot then it goes off into horizontal colors then goes black. I have search many different posts and googled but nothing is giving me a hint at this.I changed the xorg.conf to match the refresh rates to match the monitor but that did not work, and did not really think it would considering the point this monitor goes out on me. running: 2.6.27.7-smp 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller:

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Get 10.4 Live CD For PPC To Work On Old 800 MHz Flat Screen IMac G4
May 20, 2010I can't get the Ubuntu 10.4 Live CD for PPC to work on my old 800 MHz flat screen iMac G4. I believe it's supposed to work, but the installation dies with a magenta screen about a minute after selection of any boot option in the yaboot dialog.I tried all the sensible boot choices and options, all with the same result: some trundling of the CD reader, display of the messages related to the ramdisk, more trundling, then a blank magenta screen and no more trundling. The iMac becomes totally unresponsive: no more messages, can't enter any command shell. I get the impression (complicated story) that it begins to install the X server and then aborts.
This iMac has a PPC G4, 512 MB of working memory, and a GeForce2 MX video card with an nVIDIA chipset and 32 MB of video memory. There seems to be no hardware problem: OS-X 10.3 and OS-9 run just fine including wireless networking.
Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound & Screen Noise?
Sep 21, 2010I'm running the latest version of Ubuntu and have been for a while now without issue. However today (actually now yesterday) i made the giant mistake of upgrading my on board HD3150 graphics to a PCIe HD5570 since then my whole life has fallen to bits.
First i noticed some visual noise on the screen. Concluding this was due to incorrect or out of date drivers i attempted to update them from the Hardware Drivers section. This gave the error:
SystemError: installArchives() failed
Activating from the command line using jockey gave the same error.
Deciding a reboot might be needed i did so. On power up all ubuntu and recovery modes produced an unskinned GUI with no desktop icons that responded to no mouse or keyboard input.
I was forced to reinstall the operating system.
On reinstalling and losing everything i had installed previously (it's going to take many days to get that all back and working again!), i still have the screen noise, have still been getting the same errors on attempting to activate the drivers, except now i also get this:
the installation of this driver failed.

Jan 28, 2011There's this low monotone electronic buzz coming out of my speakers. But only if the greater part of my screen is using lighter colors! Meaning, if for instance I have the terminal (black) full-screen there is no buzz. If I have it sized over the half of my screen there's a medium buzz. And if I am on the Google Search home page with the browser full screen (most of the screen white) there's a loud buzz. :SAnd it's only if I run the sound through my amplifier. It's not audible if I just use the laptopspeakers. Really, I have no idea even in what direction to start looking.

Feb 12, 2010i'm using ubuntu since 8.04, and the current (9.10) is a fresh install on new hdd.the problem was the same each version (8.04, 8.10, 9.04, 9.10) - while i'm playing the video (no matter if i use mplayer [smplayer], gstreamer [totem] or adobe flash plugin [videos]) the playback freezes randomly for about 5-10 sec. during the freeze the movie is still played, i can hear the sound is ok. if i press [space] in smplayer it pauses the playback, so the responses for keyboard actions are ok. not for the mouse clicks however. i can still move the cursor around the screen but it seems the system is not aware of it (clicking on the "pause" button doesnt pause the movie). except the cursor, nothing changes on the screen (if the im [pidgin] window was blinking because of new message, it freezes etc etc).
is there any kind of log i could look into just to try figuring out the problem?it is impossible to watch any movie on my pc (currently i don't have tv)i installed windows on external hdd once and it played videos fine so i suppose it's not hardware problem .
Ubuntu :: 11.04 - Woops Flat Window Manager?
May 29, 2011I see in this thread the poster wanted the "old ambiance" look.[URL].. Well, I don't mind the new Ambiance look, but my window manager tool bars have reverted to "Old Win 32". They have gone flat and gray. The window bars still look rounded and dark. After I first log in, the window manager looks fine, and then it flips Flat and Light Gray. I've logged in using the "Ubuntu Classic" setting. Someday I'll learn "Unity", but I'm trying to get some work done. I'm running this system in a virtualbox. Irrelevant, right?

Feb 19, 2010setting up a headless torrent server for the flat. The webui works great on transmission except I want to schedule it to pause during daylight hours. Essentially I only want it to be downloading between the hours of 2am and 8am.
Currently I cannot get it to pause. Only throttle the speed. Setting the speeds to zero appears to set it to unlimited speed. And we don't really want it running 1 kb/s constantly (lowest possible setting) during the day.
Server is running 8.04 LTS using Transmission 1.83. Currently I have the Gnome desktop installed and using remote desktop viewer to set some things up via a gui. CLI is faster... if you know what you're doing, which I don't really, so I like to fiddle. I did think about using Crontabs to kill the process at 8am and start it at 2am, however this is pointless as we'd like to be able to setup torrents via the webui during the day.

Sep 23, 2010I've tried running Cheese over SSH to get a view of my flat but it's very jumpy.My upload speed at home isn't the best in the world, and Cheese seems to struggle. Does anyone know of any software that will allow me to view the cam, specifying low quality settings etc to at least get a steady picture.I know it wont be amazing, but Cheese is crashing. I tried Camorama, but it didn't pick up my webcam.

Mar 10, 2010i have a viewsonic VA712b monitor that used to get 1280x1024 resolution on my dell optiplex gx260 that had the intel video card.i upgraded my motherboard cpu and memory..the nvidia 6100 that is onboard seems like it would be an improvement to my old onboard intel but the best resolution i can get is 1024x768
i installed the nvidia 185 drivers and it's not recognizing my monitor as a flat panel lcd but as a crt, also it won't set the correct refreshrate - either 60 or 75.. it's set at 50... since xorg 7.4 no longer uses a xorg.conf file.. i'm not sure how to go about manually adjusting the settings to ones that will actually work. i mean other than buying a separate graphics car (URL)

Jun 7, 2011After installing I was not able to get many of the audio programmes to work. After some reading, I realised that this was probably due to jack not starting.
I was unable to get jack to start normally but have been able to get it started with the playback only option selected. Programmes that use jack now work, however there is no sound once jack has been started. The sound does work in other programs when jack is not started. Strangely, I only have to open qjackctl for the sound to stop, and jack is not even started. Initially I thought these problems were due to my sound card not being supported, but I believe that alsa support was added for the via 1708 codec at some point. I found that support had been added in a document showing the changes between alsa versions; however I cannot find the exact model listed as a supported sound card on the alsa site.
I believe that altering jack settings could fix the problem, as i have been able to get audio to work in hydrogen by selecting plughw:0 but there is still no sound in other programs. I have tried altering many other settings but to no avail, however I do not really understand the meaning of the settings that i am adjusting.
Does anyone know what settings to adjust or know something else that might fix this problem so that sound works once jack has been started?
Also, would programmes that use jack such as audacity, hydrogen, and ardour work with pulseaudio as the main sound server if I were to install normal ubuntu - it might be worth seeing if my soundcard works with the puleaudio sound server

May 1, 2010I've got a custom compiled kernel, just built on Lucid 10.04 from the kernel sources.System works fine, except for sound.When I log in as normal user and try to play a wav file using.The sound file is being played, but I hear no sound.However, when I do "sudo -s" and become root, execute the same mplayer command then I can hear the sound.My Sound preferences shows no input device and only "Dummy Output" as output device.On the generic kernel as came with the Lucid 10.04 CD, sound preferences shows different devices.The strange thing is: when I compiled my custom kernel, I changed nothing to the sound options in the kernel config file.

Nov 29, 2010For a couple of days ago, maybe a week or two I beguinne to get a 'snap-sound' in my compurt sound, like an eletrick charge or someting. I comes with about a minutes period. I resently find out that it came from the center-speaker. I run Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and have this sound-card: 00:09.0 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP73 High Definition Audio (rev a1)
My speaker system is Logitech X-530 I have located the problem to center-speaker, but the snap-sound only disappear if I mute the center, not lower the input, in the GNOME ALSA Mixer. I have tried to disconnect the antenna to the analoge-TV-tuner. Has anyoe a similar problem, and a trick to fix it? I don't know if it's related to any recent update of the system?
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Stops Working After 1-5 Mins Of Playing Sound?
Dec 14, 2010Playing a song works at first; then it quits after 1-5 minutes. If you select a different output device, it will work for another 1-5 minutes, but switching back to an already used up device will not play sound. Running 'sudo killall pulseaudio' resets everything and each output device works for another 1-5 minutes. This is on on 9.10.

May 8, 2011I have a fresh install of Natty and i'm having some issues getting sound to work. My laptop has a built in sound card which works just fine. However, i also have a usb 5.1 sound card which isn't working at all. Both devices show up in 'Sound Preferences' but when i select the 5.1 device as the output device sound doesnt work. I ran the alsa-info.sh script and the output can be found here.

Aug 9, 2011I am setting up a mythtv/xmbc box on Ubuntu 10.10 (natty does not install on my hardware). I have a Sabrent TV PCIRC tuner card, which seems to work fine with the proper card and tuner settings. My on-board sound is HDA-Intel surround sound, which I have configured as analog duplex.
Currently the sound works fine through my speakers plugged into any jack on the back of the PC (two speakers, one jack). I can watch ripped movies and listen to music. The TV tuner is pumping sound from its external jack -- if I hook it up directly to the speakers it works fine. I can feed the Tuner's sound to the line-in on my motherboard, but nothing comes out. In the sound manager, i have the input device selected and the input level shows that the sound is coming in through the connector, and I can test the speakers and they work fine, but they don't seem to be communicating that the sound coming in needs to be pumped out through the speakers.
