Ubuntu / Apple :: EMac And IMac File Sharing With Ethernet Cable And Other Cable?

Oct 12, 2010

how I could file share, or make the whole Hard Drive (HDD) accessible to another computer. The two other computers I have are a Toshiba Laptop with Ethernet and USB, and a iMac Intel with Firewire, USB, and Ethernet. Putting these to use along with:

Three Ethernet Cables
Two Printer Peripheral USB Cables
The Two Computers
A 2GB Flash Drive

That is all I can think of right now. I do not want to use CDs. In a way, I would like to do a network boot. So, how do I get the whole HDD visible to the others computers (either/both) and be able to write to it? I want to put Xubuntu on it, and earse the rest of the Hard Drive. The computers getting this are the iMac G3s and the eMac G4. The eMac has 256MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 700MHz processor. Two iMacs have 128MB RAM, 40GB HDD, and a 600MHz Processor. The other iMac is the same as the rest but has a 500MHz processor.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 - Woops Flat Window Manager?

May 29, 2011

I see in this thread the poster wanted the "old ambiance" look.[URL].. Well, I don't mind the new Ambiance look, but my window manager tool bars have reverted to "Old Win 32". They have gone flat and gray. The window bars still look rounded and dark. After I first log in, the window manager looks fine, and then it flips Flat and Light Gray. I've logged in using the "Ubuntu Classic" setting. Someday I'll learn "Unity", but I'm trying to get some work done. I'm running this system in a virtualbox. Irrelevant, right?

Ubuntu :: Setting Up A Headless Torrent Server For The Flat?

Feb 19, 2010

setting up a headless torrent server for the flat. The webui works great on transmission except I want to schedule it to pause during daylight hours. Essentially I only want it to be downloading between the hours of 2am and 8am.

Currently I cannot get it to pause. Only throttle the speed. Setting the speeds to zero appears to set it to unlimited speed. And we don't really want it running 1 kb/s constantly (lowest possible setting) during the day.

Server is running 8.04 LTS using Transmission 1.83. Currently I have the Gnome desktop installed and using remote desktop viewer to set some things up via a gui. CLI is faster... if you know what you're doing, which I don't really, so I like to fiddle. I did think about using Crontabs to kill the process at 8am and start it at 2am, however this is pointless as we'd like to be able to setup torrents via the webui during the day.

Software :: Key Pair Moved From Another Machine

I thought I had a handle on Enigmail based on my playing on a test machine. I have run across one perplexing problem on my "production" PC.

Thunderbird 3.04
Enigmail 2.1.0.1

I have five email accounts configured in Thunderbird. I configured 2 of the accounts successfully with individual key pairs. I have a key pair for a third account which I created on a test machine, exported to a file (public and secret keys) and imported on the production machine. When I walk through the OpenPGP setup wizard to the point of selecting a key for the email account I do not find the key which I imported. They key does show in the key management tool.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Get 10.4 Live CD For PPC To Work On Old 800 MHz Flat Screen IMac G4

May 20, 2010

I can't get the Ubuntu 10.4 Live CD for PPC to work on my old 800 MHz flat screen iMac G4. I believe it's supposed to work, but the installation dies with a magenta screen about a minute after selection of any boot option in the yaboot dialog.I tried all the sensible boot choices and options, all with the same result: some trundling of the CD reader, display of the messages related to the ramdisk, more trundling, then a blank magenta screen and no more trundling. The iMac becomes totally unresponsive: no more messages, can't enter any command shell. I get the impression (complicated story) that it begins to install the X server and then aborts.

This iMac has a PPC G4, 512 MB of working memory, and a GeForce2 MX video card with an nVIDIA chipset and 32 MB of video memory. There seems to be no hardware problem: OS-X 10.3 and OS-9 run just fine including wireless networking.

My challenge is that when I open Gparted, it only show one disk at a time. I would like to learn how to use Gparted to partition this RAID0 with a UEFI sector and LVM for the rest.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Can't Get Bluetooth Keyboard To Pair In Maverick?

Oct 13, 2010

I think my computer must be haunted, as I've so far failed at 3 different ways of installing Maverick on my 2007 aluminium imac! I've written off using a VM, and I'm currently stuck trying to make a dual boot setup.

So I've followed the guide at [URL].. and got as far as rebooting with the CD in, and selecting Ubuntu, but then when everything loads I'm left at the screen where I can select try or install, with no way of selecting either as my mouse (apple bluetooth mighty mouse) and keyboard (apple bluetooth wireless aluminium keyboard) don't seem to be connected. I've got past this point by hitting random keys after booting and selecting the CD - this takes me into a more basic looking menu where the keyboard does still work and I can select install, try etc.

So I can get as far as selecting try, and get a working Ubuntu desktop. However, when the desktop loads, my keyboard and mouse are again not working. By connecting a USB keyboard and mouse, I'm able to get my mouse to pair, using the bluetooth menu and going through the setup. However, I'm stuck trying to get my keyboard to pair.

Going into set up new device and searching initially shows up my keyboard, then it disappears. If I wait it randomly comes back and disappears again. If I click on next whilst it is available, I can get as far as putting in a pin, but when I press enter it says Failed..

Sorry for the rambling post - I basically have 2 questions: 1- Is it expected that bluetooth keyboards and mice won't work during the installation menus? Half my problem is that I don't know what should be working and when (should I have to boot into the trial installation and setup the keyboard and mouse, or should it be set up automatically?).

2- Has anyone else seen the same problem with the apple wireless keyboard failing to pair? I've searched the forums and google, and found lots of people with problems with bluetooth keyboards, but none which seem to match what I'm seeing. I don't know if there's any point in pressing on with the installation using the USB keyboard and mouse in the hope that things will work in the full install, or if they don't work in the trial install then thats my lot.

Debian :: How To Pair Bluetooth Keyboard Via Command Line On Jessie

Mar 27, 2015

I installed the Open Source Media Center (OSMC) on my Raspberry Pi 2. It's based on Debian Jessie. I bought a Blueooth Keyboard (Keysonic KSK-3211) and an USB-Bluetooth adapter (CSL Bluetooth Stick Nano). And now I am looking for a way to pair the keyboard with the raspberry via command line.

I'm new to all this bluetooth stuff in debian. It's the first time I try to install it. As far as I've understood I need an agent that is started with the pairing PIN. Then I type this PIN at the keyboard and that's it. Am I right?

The problem is, that every agent I've found in howtos or descriptions like bluez-simple-agent or bluetooth-agent (like described here [URL] ....) is not installed (and as far as I know can't be installed) under Jessie.

The bluetooth adapter is recognized

Code: Select allosmc@osmc:~$ hcitool dev
Devices:
        hci0    00:1A:7D:DA:71:0C
the keyboard is found
Code: Select allosmc@osmc:~$ hcitool scan
Scanning ...
        00:12:A1:70:42:28       Bluetooth Keyboard

And I can ping the keyboard

Code: Select allosmc@osmc:~$ sudo l2ping 00:12:A1:70:42:28
Ping: 00:12:A1:70:42:28 from 00:1A:7D:DA:71:0C (data size 44) ...
0 bytes from 00:12:A1:70:42:28 id 0 time 14.82ms
0 bytes from 00:12:A1:70:42:28 id 1 time 9.91ms
0 bytes from 00:12:A1:70:42:28 id 2 time 32.62ms
0 bytes from 00:12:A1:70:42:28 id 3 time 28.81ms
^C4 sent, 4 received, 0% loss

So everything seems to be ok ... but I can't find the command for pairing the keyboard. Looks like something changed in Jessie so that the old tutorials are outdated.

Debian Hardware :: Failure To Pair Bluetooth Mouse In Squeeze

May 9, 2011

I recently upgraded this machine from Ubuntu Maverick 10.10 to Debian Squeeze, x86_64, by wiping the root partition (I kept my backup and my home partitions). Everything has gone OK except this: for whatever reason I cannot pair my Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 with this machine any longer. In bluetooth-applet I can see the mouse when I go to pair it with the machine, but it simply times out and the pairing fails.

The target mouse definitely used to work in Ubuntu, so I doubt it's a problem in the physical layer. I tried another Bluetooth mouse (a Rocketfish/BestBuy POS), and it doesn't pair either. The Microsoft mouse I would like to use pairs just fine with my Debian squeeze laptop, but they're not using identical Bluetooth adapters as far as I can tell. lsusb reports that I've got a Broadcom BCM2210 in my workstation (the subject of this post), and lsusb on my laptop reports some kind of Broadcom Bluetooth adapter, but doesn't report its chipset.I'd really like to stay on squeeze if possible, but my googling for this has only led me to old documentation, or stuff that applies to wheezy or sid.

Ubuntu Servers :: Simulate A Failed Raid Array On A Pair Of 2tb Disks?

Feb 26, 2011

Using a fresh copy of server 10.04 im trying to simulate a failed raid array on a pair of 2tb disks. Here is the procedure i have been following so far:

- Remove the dead disk partitions from each of the raid 1 arrays (substitute the correct md devices and partitions)
- mdadm /dev/md0 -r /dev/sdb2
- mdadm /dev/md1 -r /dev/sdb3

[code]....

I get an error here that sfdisk does not support gpt (guid partition table). I thought sfdisk did support gpt? It says to use parted, but i cant find a command that copies a partition table over from another disk in parted documentation. Any suggestions? I suppose i could make the partitions manually, but im writing a procedure for people who arent that technical and i need it to be simple enough to be run in my absence. manually building the partitions would be too hard for them.
