I have a dvd that was made on windows and acidrip rips about 75% of it then stops.All others that was made on ubuntu ripped but not the one made on the windows pc.Can someone tell me how to rip it or maybe a software better then acidrip.

I've got several language multimedia CD-Rom's, made for Windows 95/98/98 SE and 2000, that I'm using by means of my daughter's old PC (Win 98 SE O.S.). However I noticed, also, that you can perfectly use them even with Windows Vista. What I'd like to know is if you can use them even with Suse/Novell and (why not?) OpenSuse Linux.

Back in July I bought an Acer Aspire ONE KAV60 with Xubuntu installed on it. I used to run Linux a long time ago but had not messed with it for a couple of years and I was surprised to find out how much more "user friendly" Linux had gotten (With Ubuntu anyways). There are more and more GUI programs/processes now days which makes everything easier to do, however there are a couple of things that I have found in the last few months running Linux only on my little netbook.
When I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid and installed it from the Xubuntu, I was quite satisfied with the general desktop setup and ease of the operating system. I loved it, it was like going from OS/2 to Win95 all over again! (I'm not that old, I just started young). Here recently, I ran into a little problem with 10.04 and had to re-format, but when I went to re-download it the new 10.10 was available instead. I threw it on a flash drive and installed it on my netbook only to have "problem after problem" upon installation and had downloaded and installed 10.04 from the archives in a matter of a few hours after messing with 10.10.
There were plus sides and down sides to both right off the bat. I am a nerd I suppose and I have started to play a game called Runescape. After installing 10.10, I opened up Runescape and was able to use the "Re-sizable" screen option! That's an amazing option with Runescape on a netbook. I then opened up my favorite and most used program suite called aircrack-ng. I had the apparently infamous problem titled "fixed channel mon0: -1" and was completely unable to get it working (even after reading the SOLVED article on here.) I spent probably 2 hours trying to figure out that problem and was unable to do so. I cannot be without the aircrack-ng suite so I decided to revert back as I fore mentioned.
Upon reverting back to Lucid LTS from the archives, I was happy with the smoothness of how it runs on my netbook compared to 10.10, but as soon as I logged onto that damn game Runescape, I was on a mission to figure out how to correct the "fixed channel mon0: -1" issue on 10.10 so I could have the re-sizable screen option again.
I finally figured out that I needed (from a fresh install on 10.10) to do apt-get install patch and apt-get install gcc before I could complete the steps of the SOLVED issue guide. This was never mentioned and it made me realize I still need to know what I'm doing if I'm going to run Linux and then maybe I won't have all these issues.
Out of all this, I have a couple of questions and would like to learn more about Linux so I do not have these problems in the future. Here are a couple of questions I would like to mention first: What is gcc? I had all that trouble just because I didn't know to install gcc to do the tutorial.
I believe the re-sizable screen option is available for me in 10.10 and not 10.04 because of Java. I did not have to install Java in 10.10 at all, I just opened up Runescape "out of the box". In 10.04, I use Sun Java with the apt-get command in Terminal. Does anybody have any information to confirm or deny this?
Once I got aircrack-ng working in 10.10, I was surprised to find out that it is amazingly fast compared to 10.04. I believe this has to do with drivers. I was able to use aircrack-ng (after install) "out of the box" with 10.04 so I did not download the "compat wireless" drivers that had to be used in 10.10 to get it to work.
If I were to revert back to Ubuntu 10.04 (I much prefer Lucid for my netbook, runs much better), would I theoretically be able to download a different Java and use the re-sizable option on Runescape? Would I also be able to use the "compat wireless" drivers in 10.04 to make aircrack-ng send and receive arp's and ack's so much quicker?
Last but not least, I would like some sources if possible to better learn Linux from. I mean Terminal type Linux, I do appreciate (as I said earlier) the new GUIs that are available now and I didn't have before, but I still feel the need to know my way around the system and I just don't have that knowledge.
My computer originally had Vista installed on a sata hdd, and I added a second hdd (IDE) to install Ubuntu 8.04 and had been working great. Everything installed easy. few months ago I downloaded and reinstalled 9.10. That also worked good. I have been telling others about how well it has been working for me. I haven't had any trouble fixing any of the minor problems that I did come across like playing encrypted dvds.Well last week I upgraded to 10.04 using update mgr and it wanted to update grub. so i went ahead and let it.
after rebooting to Ubuntu (which is now a little slower than 9.10), the login screen page was shifted to the right. everything else was fine after logging in. windows also booted up ok. I found some info on a forum that helped me change resolution for grub, and I think I may have done more custom changes that I read online. everything seemed ok until this week. I try to boot into windows but after selecting the windows loader, the page just goes black and does nothing (cpu fan is working hard and doesn't slow) im not sure if i moved grub to wrong partition or if its configured to boot the right windows partition.I have two partitions on sata hdd. one is just the windows recovery. the IDE has Ubuntu only.

I asked my friend who is a contributor to ubuntu, and runs a cyber security company to install it on my computer and he said that he will charge me $375 to do this. And then he said that it is not such a difficult thing, however, it will need a lot of tinkering with ubuntu before it works flawlessly. I didn't know what he meant and didn't want to get into it with him. I was wondering if you could direct me to the threads that discuss installation of Ubuntu alongside Windows 7 already installed and on a separate hardware. I don't wanna pay him that money and I'm very new to this. Also, I hope someone could explain what kind of tinkering is done before it works flawlessly.
I have a home movie that is currently in Video_TS format (.bup/.vob files). I burned the movie using K3b and it works awesome in both Ubuntu and on my DVD player with the television. BUT the thing will not play in XP! I understand this is because XP is the work of the devil, but that is not important. The disc shows 4Gb used (in XP) but only gives the title. I even made sure hidden files were visible, just in case somehow the movie was invisible. I have tried burning my DVD directly from the video_ts files in K3b, and first making an .iso file, then going over to XP to burn the DVD using Nero...annnnnd same thing. I can watch them on the TV and 'buntu but not XP.
What have I done wrong? Advice? Need more info? invariably someone wants to ask the irrelevant question "Why do you need to watch it in Windows?"
I have an HP laptop with both Ubuntu 8.04 and Windows Vista installed on it.
The other day I noticed I was running out of space in the main linux partition (the / partition, not the /home partition), so I decided to move some space from the Windows partition and move it to the linux one. I used a GParted Live CD to do that.
My partitions are ordered as follows:
Windows Vista partition (NTFS)
Main linux partition / (ext3)
Linux home partition /hom (ext3)
HP RECOVERY (NTFS - I don't know what it is, it just comes with HP laptops that have Vista on them)
So I shrank partition 1, and then "moved" partition 2 to enlarge it (GParted said everything was alright).
After doing that, I went to my linux and everything seemed to be fine, I'm also quite sure I had access to my Windows partition as always. But today I tried to start my Windows and it just got stuck on the "loading" stage (that screen that says "Microsoft Corporation" and has a green loading bar). So I shut the computer down manually (by holding the power button for a few seconds). After doing that a couple of time, I went to my linux, which worked just fine, but I was not able to go to the Windows partition. You can see how GParted looks now for my computer:[url]
As you can see, the first partition (/dev/sda1), which is supposed to be the Windows partition, is not mounted and the system doesn't seem to be able to read it properly. Here is my attempt to mount it manually:

I would like to capture the sound of my peacocks. These birds "crow" (for lack of a better word) only a few times in a day.
Usually they do so at around the time it gets light, about 6:00-ish. They might call again once before I leave for work.
The problem is to capture a high quality audio clip of their sound I need to have the recording running when they call. Turning the recorded on an hour before they call may be an option, but the size of the data file produced is rather obnoxious.
So I need something like a kind of time-lapse function for sound. I'd like to set the recording to run and then have it fill a 10-minute circular buffer.
Then when the birds call, I can go and stop the recording and then I can extract the portions from the file that I like.
Now, finally, for the question: Is there a ready-made linux application I can use for this?
I don't do a lot of audio work, and don't expect to use the program more than a few times, so I am willing to build something from source too, so long as it is easy to clean up afterwards and as long as it compiles without too many issues.

View 9 Replies View Relatedi wiped my entire hard drive that had xp as its only OS. I freshly installed a Windows 7 ultimate and everything went perfectly. I then decided to install 10.4. I split the partitions correctly (i had experience doing this already with my laptop, which has xp/10.4). Ubuntu 10.4 install went flawlessly, except for one thing. Now when i boot up the pc, it goes straight into 10.4. I have tried holding shift during the start up to force the boot menu, and it just shows the Ubuntu 10.4 OS as choices. Any clue what i could do to make Win7 appear in the boot menu?

I'm now attempting to rip these files to dvd to upload onto other computers. Burning to DVD seems to be fine, but windows doesn't read any of the jpg's.

View 7 Replies View RelatedSo I shrunk my Windows 7 partition. Now I have a 450GB partition with Windows 7 on it and a 50GB partition for Ubuntu that is unallocated space currently. So when I go to the setup for Ubuntu, booted into using my USB flash drive, it doesn't recognise that Windows is there. It thinks that the hard drive, all 500GB of it, is free space. Going into GParted, it also seems to think that the entire hard drive is a blob of unallocated space. According to tutorials online, this shouldn't be happening. It should recognise the two different partitions. So I went into Computer in Ubuntu (Live) just to double-check and indeed all my Windows files are there and I can still boot into Windows just fine.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a hp pc that has a hard drive of 750 gb and a recovery hard drive of 31gb. I installed linux side by side with windows 7 for dual booting. Now I can't boot windows 7 anymore. During the installation of linux, I chose the advanced option so as to manually partition the drives for linux. On the available list of drives, I chose the 750gb and clicked on modify. I chose 150gb for the root "/" (on ext4) and 700mb for swap out of the 750gb and clicked install. After finishing the installation I restarted the pc and sought to test linux. The linux works fine but when i tried to start windows, I have a boot error. My pc doesn't seem to recognize windows anymore. It takes me straight to the HP recovery tool. I don't understand why. So I logged into ubuntu and check the disk utility and I discovered that I have a whooping 600gb unallocated space. It's like my whole windows is gone. This is what Disk Utilty shows

What can I do to recover my windows back?
Ubuntu insists on using movie player as the default for audio files. I would like to use VLC. VLC doesn't show up on the list as preferred applications for multimedia. I tried using custom with vlc %u but it doesn't work.

I reboot my computer, and it doesn't try to install anything.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot setup with two hard drives. Windows 7 is running on my primary drive with Ubuntu 10.04 on the secondary drive. I installed GRUB 2 to the secondary hard drive, and I'm booting from that. Everything seems to be working well with one problem. Every time I shut down from Ubuntu and tell it to load Windows (it doesn't matter if it's a reboot or power off/on), Windows locks up during its boot. If I power the laptop off and back on, I can select and load into Windows just fine. It just takes two attempts EVERY time.

But by accident I pressed the power button when I was downloading in Windows and since then Windows won't boot anymore. Is this a Windows problem or is it maybe that it srewed up my grub? Because I can still select Windows in the grub menu but it stops at "Starting up".
I have a new netbook - "Eee PC 1005PE-PU27-BK" and installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04, Kernel Linux 2.6.32-24-generic. I love Ubuntu, but I also want to be able to access Windows 7 if I can. I've read some on GRUB, but the menu on startup isn't showing my Windows 7 instance. I've tried reinstalling GRUB, but when I run sudo update-grub, I still get this:

I know that Windows 7 is still on the system, I just can't access it.
I've searched the forums, internet, etc... and I can't seem to find anything on this. I installed Windows 7 using ~70% of my available hard drive space, the other 30% is unallocated. there are two partitions, the 100MB 'System' partition and the NTFS one with Windows 7.
On my first attempt to install Ubuntu: The partitions didn't look right. It detected two NTFS partitions, the first one of 100MB, and a second NTFS partition using ~30% of my hard drive, and 70% (presumably Windows) as unallocated. I decided to go ahead and try to install it over the 30% NTFS partition thinking that maybe the installer just didn't recognize the free space right or something, but after that happened, Nothing loaded and my Windows partition was trashed.
I wiped the drive, and reinstalled Windows again with the 70/30 split. On my second attempt to install Ubuntu: On step 4 of the installation process (partitions) it doesn't detect my Windows 7 installation at all. Instead, it says the disk is 100% unallocated.
Does anyone know why the Ubuntu Installer is not detecting my Windows partition correctly? If so, how can I go about getting Ubuntu to see it and install itself along side Windows?
So, as the title says Windows 7 doesn't show up in GRUB2's selection menu, but it does show my Windows XP professional option that I had before Linux and then reinstalled. After searching very long for the problem in Linux and GRUB2 I decided to boot into XP, witch gave me the option for Windows 7 or older versions of Windows -> so I eventually can boot to it! So here is the real question: How can I make an entry for Windows 7 and for Windows XP? This is because I'd like to use a theme for GRUB and it would be to stupid to make GRUB look nice if I then come to a stupid screen of the Windows loader!
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows XP Pro SP3 and it is currently setup on a system running 2 SCSI drives with an adaptec 2940 UW (non RAID) PCI card both are 18.4 GB. Windows XP is installed on the first one and I am trying to install Ubuntu 11.04 onto the second, but the installation doesn't recognize that windows is installed on the first drive and only gives me that drive as an option to install... Gparted recognizes both, one as an NTFS file system (sdb) and the second as a unpartitioned drive (sdc) and for some reason is placing the usb drive as sda which i'm assuming might cause some issues with grub boot loader later on after the drive is removed. what might be causing this issue and how i would go about fixing it... should i just go to 10.04 and upgrade to 11.04 after?

I recently did a fresh install of Windows 7 on my laptop, then shrunk my partition and set aside some free space for Ubuntu. When I went to install Ubuntu, however, it told me that no operating systems had been detected on the system. I ignored this message and just installed Ubuntu on the free space, but when the installation was finished, GRUB failed to recognize Windows 7 as well and would only boot into Ubuntu.
After several attempts at getting GRUB to see W7, I eventually gave up and used my W7 CD to reinstall the Windows bootloader which, naturally, didn't detect Ubuntu and would only allow me to boot Windows.
I've tried messing around with my Windows partition a bit, but no matter what configuration I use, I can't seem to get the Karmic installer to see it. I've resorted to using WUBI for now, but I'd really like to have Ubuntu on its own partition in case something goes wrong with Windows; plus, I'd love to be able to use ext4 and GRUB. Anybody know how I can get around this issue?
I've used the same install CD on several other machines with Windows 7 and it recognized them just fine. It's only this one computer that's having the issue.
As many people have posted before regarding this issue, i think it was me who messed things up as i believe i incorrectly put grub on the sda1 ? when they asked about grub config during installation i was a bit lost, and even though i went off the help it said if you were not sure choose all of them..
So i am wondering if there is an easy way to fix this. As i am running sata drives on my laptop, so my windows xp recovery option is out... and all i have is a windows image, which i would like to try and repair from ubuntu as i can start ubuntu up.

I wanted to test 10.04 and downloaded Wubi to do so. Normal setup, it automatically picked the 64-bit version. After booting into Wubi, installing my ATI drivers and restarting it did no longer connect to my ethernet. A few reboots didn't help so I went back to Windows for troubleshooting.
However now Windows doesn't connect to the ethernet either. It's plain dead, Windows doesn't find any connections and the modem doesn't light the Ethernet cable LED. The modem itself works fine with wireless devices. I have now tried everything including uninstalling Ubuntu, system restore, driver rollback, driver update, BIOS default settings, a different cable, a different modem etc.
This is a 64-bit specific issue because I tested the 32-bit version of Wubi 10.04 a few months ago without problems.

I'd like to get out of this without Ubuntu effectively having broken my hardware and my trust in it.
I want to auto mount my ntfs partition using pysdm. However, it does not see it. When I do an fdisk -l it shows up. I can access the partition through my home folder... it just doesn't show up in pysdm. I have already tried to reinstall the program.
