When i want to record sound it record but the voice is very low.which means i need to turn up for full wolume on both headset and pc when i want to hear it, and it still is very low sound..I've tried.Re-installing audacity changing microphone plug microphones directly to pc instead of through headset.both the 'pink' and blue jacktick port (also with above options)
View 2 RepliesI'm trying to record some audio from 4-track cassette tapes using Audacity and a Sound Blaster mp3+ external usb audio card.I'm using Karmic.I have fiddled with levels on the sound card using alsamixer, but the only I way I can detect any sound from the tapes when recording is by turning the levels all the way up in alsamixer, and in doing this, I can faintly make out the audio beneath a large wall of static. If the levels are not maxed out, I only get static when recording in Audacity.

It sounds fine for regular playback, but, for recording through Audacity, all I hear is this scratchy/distorted sound like it's turned all the way up. I tried lowering the volumes in alsamixer, but, that didn't work. Wanted to know if anyone had a solution before I send it back.

The first track is the music. I looked at the alsamixer and the mic was originally muted and i unmuted. Should line be muted when i am using the mic? I also tried to record with the mic in sound recorder but got nothing there either.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to capture audio from a stream, NOT from the mic. This is what I'm doing: Start Audacity, push its record button, play a song. It shows that it is recording but when I play back the results, all background noise, conversation, etc, is in the recording as well as the audio from the song. If the mic is unplugged, I cannot record what I hear coming from the sound card (as in what you hear from the sound card is what you get). I got directions on how to do what I want here ( Looking (maybe) for audio mixer for use with Pulse Audio - Page 2 Posts # 4 and 5) but it's not permanent. I got the instructions in post #11 from that same page to make such a change permanent. I tried using the instructions to make the change permanent (I backed up my default.pa just in case something went wrong) and these are the changes I had made:

i am trying to use Audacity to record internally the sound playing on my computer, and im finding the program quite confusing. I have found that by connecting the line out to the line in i am able to record, but the quality is rubbish, it will be a lot smoother recording it internally but I cant find a way of doing this, does anyone know how to record that way or know where i'm going wrong?

Im on XP and am trying to get a 9 min piece of music from a cassette on my music centre into audacity on my comp got the line from earphone socket into the blue socket at back of comp (there are 3 sockets in a line then 3 more below them in a line go the line in socket... blue top left. )
Im getting sound ok on the comp with radio, its playing vids etc well so I cant think anything is wrong with the sound card. Playing the cassette on my music centre should get the sound into the comp and into the comp speakers.... but I just cant get a peep

View 3 Replies View RelatedBackground: I'm digitizing an old record. I used Sound Recorder to make FLACs of each side of the LP, and now I need to edit them down to individual tracks. I'm using the development version of Ubuntu 10.04.
Problem: Audacity ignores these FLAC files when I attempt to import or open them.
The FLAC files play if I hover the mouse over them in GNOME.
Audacity gladly imports FLAC files I ripped from CD last year (using Sound Juicer I think).
But when I try to do the same for my recorded FLAC files, nothing happens. I tried running audacity in a terminal window, and there is no additional output when I attempt the import. This comes out when I start it:

Looking at the file properties, they're basically the same except the Juicer-generated file has values filled in for title, artist, album, year. They are all FLAC Stereo 44100 Hz. I thought it might be a file-size problem, so I made a 5-second test with Sound Recorder, and that also refuses to import.
So, why do only the ripped files work with Audacity?
I want to be able to record the sounds coming through my soundcard with Audacity. How would i go about doing this?

Its recording from the built-in mic, and I want to use the mic jack instead as a line in from a guitar (well, technically, an acoustic-electric resonator, but its close enough to a guitar to call it a guitar).
I have tried using various devices for recording, and changing settings in both the Volume Control and Sound Preferences, but no matter what I do, Audacity still records from my built-in microphones, instead of from the line-in.
I'm having problems getting my microphone to work on a new Kubuntu 10.10 install. I'm not sure what's wrong, but I can't make Skype calls (in which the other party hears me).

Ok my respected Linux genius. This is my project. First I have a Windows / Linux combo OS set-up!
In my windows, I use the latest realtex sound driver as this gives me complete control with recording output control and Microphone gain control. In the set-up, there is a stereo mixer component with is necessary to engage the direct sound recording from my sound card. To make this all come together, I use a sound recording software [ free sound recorder 9 ] and to convert the recording to a wma, wav, or meg, I use Roxio 10 to produce audio cd's to play on all CD Players.
The challenge for me in Linux is to create the same set-up with Linux applications to produce the same professional results.Presently, my kubuntu 10.04 has Alsa sound drivers, with a version of realtek incorporated. I have the Alsa mixer software as well as Audacity as the sound recorder program. But no matter what I do, audacity depends on the microphone to record, which makes the final recording pure crap. If I lower the microphone boost or gain in my Alsa mix, then Audacity can not record the ambient sound from the speaker output and it will only recognize mono and pulse as the sound method. With the pre mention set up, Who has a set up identical to what is offered to windows that will do exactly the same for Linux. I basically want to record directly from the sound card in my Linux, without depending on using my microphone and then a CD burning program to make the conversion to MPEG or the necessary file format for the burned CD to play in all CD players, not just on a PC) I am trying to stay away from command line language in the terminal. I have detected some problems when I try to record sound in my Kubuntu 10.04 system.
The problem is that the "default" device for audio recording does not work but I have to select another device to do so. I always selected the "default" device for audio recoding but currently I have to select hw:0,2 device.
Another odd thing is that different programs show me different device. For example, Audacity shows me that I have the following audio recording devices:
- HDA Intel: ALC888 Digital (hw:0,1)
- HDA Intel: ALC888 Analog (hw:0,2)
- spdif
- default
The only one that works is hw:0,2.
But arecord shows me (when I execute "arecord -L") the following:
Finally, in KDE system preferences for audio I get that I have 2 different audio devices for audio recording:
- HDA Intel (ALC888 Analog): it is said that it will try first x-phonon (CARD=0, DEV=0) and, if the latter does not work, it will try plughw (CARD=0, DEV=0)
- HDA Intel (ALC888 Digital): it is said that it will try first x-phonon (CARD=0, DEV=1) and, if the latter does not work, it will try plughw (CARD=0, DEV=1)
Where is the hw:0,2? and how can I set the alsa system to use hw:0,2 as the default device for audio recording?
All of that would not be a problem but I also have an ubuntu 9.04 installed on a virtual machine (by using virtualbox) and audio recording doesn't work there. I suppose that it is becase of the virtual sound card is using default devices for playing and recording audio.
I must say that audio playback works fine in both host and guest systems. It is just audio recording.
When I try to playback a sound file in aucadity just after having played one in rhythmbox or totem or vlc (or presumably any other media player), I get the following message :
"Error while opening sound device. Please check the output device settings and the project sample rate."
When I try again 2 or 3 seconds later, playback works fine. In fact if I wait 2 or 3 seconds after having stopped playback in rhythmbox or totem before starting playback in audacity, audacity doesn't give me the error message at all. Just wondering what causes this delay (as there are no delays when I go from rhythmbox to totem or vlc or anything else).
I just installed skype 2.1 beta 2 (the deb file) from the skype website, but the only option I see under Sound Devices -> Recording is "PulseAudio Server (local)" This doesn't work for me, as the skype test calls don't actually record anything I say. I use skype a lot and FINALLY got it working under karmic, but I needed to upgrade to lucid and now it's broken.
When I open Sound preferences and look at the Applications section, Skype shows up as recording when I run its test call... but no sound is recorded? How is it possible that my sound card picks up something recording but doesn't actually record it when I'm in skype?
My trusty Tascam us122 is now an ex-card (as the guys from MP would say). I'm looking for a new one:1. Obviously it has to play really nicely with linux2. it needs to have phantom powerI'll be using it for recording voice (a Behringer Studio Condenser Mic) and my electric guitar.

Right now I just want to edit some audio in Audacity.
I switched back to Linux after a few years, because it usually is "better" than Windows.
I cannot get any sound. I installed ALSA removed and reinstalled PulseAudio and everything else I could find in a forum, to no avail.
Linux tells me my sound card is: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)
I used to be able to play MP3s but that went away in the process of all this.
Is there one solution I am missing, or do I have to change everything around depending on what I am doing?
I would like to use Linux for this but deadlines might make me go back to the dark side....
I've found somewhere on the forum I need to check whether "wave" in alsamixer is not muted. There is another posibility: change source in audacity to "wave". There is no option like this in my program and I don't know where can I find that "wave" in alsamixer. I don't use any like artsd, jack... Just alsa + fluxbox + audacity.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running Fedora 15 XFCE spin, Audacity 1.3.13-beta and my sound is ALSA/Pulseaudio (I'm not totally sure what these are anyway, are they drivers?) Anyway, when I'm in Audacity and I go to the record options I can choose from default, pulse, and HDA ATI SB:ALC268 Analog (hw:0,0). If I try any of these three options and press record I get static. Here's a screenshot of what it looks like to press record for each of the three options in order.

The last option won't even record nothing, it just doesn't work. Also, if you look where the little picture of the microphone is, the option to drag the input volume is greyed out.
