Ok my respected Linux genius. This is my project. First I have a Windows / Linux combo OS set-up!
In my windows, I use the latest realtex sound driver as this gives me complete control with recording output control and Microphone gain control. In the set-up, there is a stereo mixer component with is necessary to engage the direct sound recording from my sound card. To make this all come together, I use a sound recording software [ free sound recorder 9 ] and to convert the recording to a wma, wav, or meg, I use Roxio 10 to produce audio cd's to play on all CD Players.
The challenge for me in Linux is to create the same set-up with Linux applications to produce the same professional results.Presently, my kubuntu 10.04 has Alsa sound drivers, with a version of realtek incorporated. I have the Alsa mixer software as well as Audacity as the sound recorder program. But no matter what I do, audacity depends on the microphone to record, which makes the final recording pure crap. If I lower the microphone boost or gain in my Alsa mix, then Audacity can not record the ambient sound from the speaker output and it will only recognize mono and pulse as the sound method. With the pre mention set up, Who has a set up identical to what is offered to windows that will do exactly the same for Linux. I basically want to record directly from the sound card in my Linux, without depending on using my microphone and then a CD burning program to make the conversion to MPEG or the necessary file format for the burned CD to play in all CD players, not just on a PC) I am trying to stay away from command line language in the terminal. I'm trying to record some audio from 4-track cassette tapes using Audacity and a Sound Blaster mp3+ external usb audio card.I'm using Karmic.I have fiddled with levels on the sound card using alsamixer, but the only I way I can detect any sound from the tapes when recording is by turning the levels all the way up in alsamixer, and in doing this, I can faintly make out the audio beneath a large wall of static. If the levels are not maxed out, I only get static when recording in Audacity.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have detected some problems when I try to record sound in my Kubuntu 10.04 system.
The problem is that the "default" device for audio recording does not work but I have to select another device to do so. I always selected the "default" device for audio recoding but currently I have to select hw:0,2 device.
Another odd thing is that different programs show me different device. For example, Audacity shows me that I have the following audio recording devices:
- HDA Intel: ALC888 Digital (hw:0,1)
- HDA Intel: ALC888 Analog (hw:0,2)
- spdif
- default
The only one that works is hw:0,2.
But arecord shows me (when I execute "arecord -L") the following:
Finally, in KDE system preferences for audio I get that I have 2 different audio devices for audio recording:
- HDA Intel (ALC888 Analog): it is said that it will try first x-phonon (CARD=0, DEV=0) and, if the latter does not work, it will try plughw (CARD=0, DEV=0)
- HDA Intel (ALC888 Digital): it is said that it will try first x-phonon (CARD=0, DEV=1) and, if the latter does not work, it will try plughw (CARD=0, DEV=1)
Where is the hw:0,2? and how can I set the alsa system to use hw:0,2 as the default device for audio recording?
All of that would not be a problem but I also have an ubuntu 9.04 installed on a virtual machine (by using virtualbox) and audio recording doesn't work there. I suppose that it is becase of the virtual sound card is using default devices for playing and recording audio.
I must say that audio playback works fine in both host and guest systems. It is just audio recording.
I just installed skype 2.1 beta 2 (the deb file) from the skype website, but the only option I see under Sound Devices -> Recording is "PulseAudio Server (local)" This doesn't work for me, as the skype test calls don't actually record anything I say. I use skype a lot and FINALLY got it working under karmic, but I needed to upgrade to lucid and now it's broken.
When I open Sound preferences and look at the Applications section, Skype shows up as recording when I run its test call... but no sound is recorded? How is it possible that my sound card picks up something recording but doesn't actually record it when I'm in skype?
My trusty Tascam us122 is now an ex-card (as the guys from MP would say). I'm looking for a new one:1. Obviously it has to play really nicely with linux2. it needs to have phantom powerI'll be using it for recording voice (a Behringer Studio Condenser Mic) and my electric guitar.
View 4 Replies View RelatedPlaying a song works at first; then it quits after 1-5 minutes. If you select a different output device, it will work for another 1-5 minutes, but switching back to an already used up device will not play sound. Running 'sudo killall pulseaudio' resets everything and each output device works for another 1-5 minutes. This is on on 9.10.

found one other post with this same issue, and the final reply was "I give up"...I got a fresh 9.1 install. I just want to record some audio, but it's only recording on one channel, the left channel.I tried audacity and sound recorder. checked the sound preferences, Hardware set to Analog Stereo Duplex. In audacity Preferences > Devices > Recording, 2 (Stereo) is selected.When recording in audacity the output meter for the left channel shows activity while the right channel looks like it goes up a little bit but doesn't peak like the left channel. I have looked into the fixes of the 64bit MMPEG upgrades and gone through what steps I can find to fix the problem, although even after going through the re-compile in konsole, as well as then removing it and trying again using K Package Manager, I still have no Audio with my Video when recording in Cheese.Cheese records the video in ogv format, and I have attempted to convert the ogv file to avi format using VLC. I am able to watch the video in both VLC and Dragon Player... but no sound, just video. I have used Cheese to record video's using Ubuntu 8.10 onwards, but my current Kubuntu 10.04.01 (and when I had 10.04) has no sound in the recordings. I have not changed microphone, and I have checked all my connections. I can hear voice in the speakers through the microphone. I am using on board sound, which I have no other issues with. The error message I get tells me that my MMPEG install lacks the AAC Audio Codec.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWell, I've made progress in getting my recording to work.I was running a piece of software called liveice, and this used to work, but now with the current versions of of Fedora I just get noise and other strange problems. I stopped using liveice, and switched to darkice, and now my recordings are working without noise. I hear correct sound and the volume controls are acting sensible.Liveice was broken in a very weird way.The recording meter worked correctly, but the audio it actually recorded was just noise.This program uses OSS, as does darkice.When I record on the SB live, which is dsp2,sometimes I hear sound on it from the other sound card? Is that weird? Why would the input from the sound cards come in mixed like this?I have two sound cards, /dev/dsp and /dev/dsp1. One shows as ICH5/AD1985, and the other is an SB Live 5.1.I currently have Pulseaudio installed and running. I did a yum update just now.This is all with Fedora 12.This system was upgraded from 10 to 11.And then again from 11 to 12.

Video is OK, and the sound also gets thorough (to the line out) when running xawtv, for example. However, I found no ways yet for recording it.I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 with ALSA drivers. Pulseaudio was running in the beginning, now it doesn't, but it doesn't seem to make much difference.
capturing with VLC, using plughw:0,0 as the audio capture device. (Result: no sound track at all in the resulting video.)arecord, then aplay.alsamixer. The capture source is set to "CD" (and on the input side it's also "CD" where I can effectively modify the volume for audio going through...), but still no result.
Is there any way in Debian to record streaming audio from the soundcard, after it has been decoded by a player or a browser?
Of course, the best way to record streaming audio is to grab the stream directly, but with emerging technologies, before the stream grabbers catch up, it can be difficult or impossible to directly grab a stream. The Akamai HDS format is a good example of this. The fragment packets are hard to grab individually and hard to combine. Something like [URL] .... didn't work for me.
Furthermore, as technology advances, stream grab techniques will have to play catchup.
But what normally works is capture from the soundcard, after the stream has been decoded by the player or browser. I have used Total Recorder [URL] .... on windows to do this for many years.
Is there a debian package that can capture sound from the soundcard, and save it as mp3 or ogg? And will this package run on the raspberry pi?
I just bought an Audigy SE sound card. It sounds fine for regular playback, but, for recording through Audacity, all I hear is this scratchy/distorted sound like it's turned all the way up. I tried lowering the volumes in alsamixer, but, that didn't work. Wanted to know if anyone had a solution before I send it back.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am currently running Ubuntu 9.04 and am looking at upgrading to the upcoming 10.04 LTS release. And have been trying out the new version using the release candidate live CD. The main problem is one that was also evident when 9.04 was originally installed - audio recording and monitoring simply is not working. With 9.04 it took several hours of head-banging and reading HOW-TOs and guides to get to the point where audio input to the sound card played through the speakers and can be recorded by programs such as Audacity.
I've been trying to poke around with 10.04 to get the same results and so far had no success. (Things have changed sufficiently that it does not seem straightforward to simply replicate my 9.04 settings.) This is on 64-bit Ubuntu with a Soundblaster Audigy sound card. It's a little disappointing that we are not yet at the point where this type of basic functionality is working "out of the box" with Ubuntu. Anyone have any tips to setting up 10.04 for audio recording and monitoring?
Although I never did get this working with the live CD, recording worked fine after doing a test installation of Lucid on a spare hard drive. With the live CD the primary line input was not even showing up in alsamixer. With Lucid installed it was no problem to find and crank up the volume on this input. In actuality then, once the installation was actually done it took much less fiddling with this release than it did with 9.04 to get the same results.
Is there any way of changing the recording sample rate in the GNOME sound recorder? It's set at 22050Hz, and I'd like to record at 44100Hz. I can't find anything in the GUI to set preferences, and I can't find a text configuration file to edit, either.I've tried rec and arecord, but they both give a similar message:
I made it this way so that I wouldn't get audio lag in programs, but it also means I can't play audio in more than one application at a time, apparently (with some odd exceptions). I just got it from a thread in the Ubuntu forums, and it's worked fine for me so far.I'm really clueless here, as I've never had to fiddle around much with audio settings (let alone ALSA) before. I have just installed 9.10, unfortunately sound is not working. I have an 275 gtx video card that is connected via HDMI cable. The spdif is connected via the motherboard and video card.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been using Ubuntu for several months now. The sound was working just fine until now. I installed an update I put off that came 9/20/10. I restarted and my sound no longer works. The speakers built into the laptop doesn't work nor do the headphones. I tried going to the preferences to fix it, but my sound card info wasn't there anymore. Dummy Output was in my Output. I've been searching frantically for a solution but found none. I think my driver has been uninstalled some how but I'm not sure. I use the laptop for multimedia purposes, so please respond as soon as possible. I would GREATLY appreciate it. I have Ubuntu 10.04 on my Acer Aspire 5532 laptop.
