I am going to cover these four problems in this thread.
1.)Using gtk-recordMyDesktop and xvidcap for recording videos
2.)Saving files in ogv format
3.)Converting ogv to avi or wmv or ?
4.)Uploading ogv video to .....
First, I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and have installed gtk-recordMyDesktop and it works great. Save a nice clear video with good sound. I can play it right from my system and also from my server but I can not upload it to ...... Maybe I should say I can't upload a good video to ...... It uploads OK but it is un-viewable. Just to make sure it wasn't a Ubuntu problem I tried uploading it from Windows 7. Same thing. The next thing I tried was to convert it to another file format and even before I uploaded it, it was un-viewable. (looked the same as when it was uploaded to .....). I tried the conversion in a Windows program called AVS and I also tried doing it with VLC in Ubuntu. VLC just give me a blank file after converting. I don't think the problem is with ..... but with the file itself. To be honest with you I believe the video is high quality but I don't see how I can put them on ...... Has anyone converted ogv files to another format which looks good and can be uploaded to .....? Has anyone uploaded a ogv file to ..... and have it look good? Does anyone know anything I can try to get a good viewable file up to ...... I tried recording a video with xvidcap and get a good video and it looks good on ..... but I can't get the sound to work with it. All I get is clicking in the video. File is in mpeg format.

I have installed XVidCap Screen Capture. If I record my screen with XVid Cap Screen Capture there is no sound. But if I record with Desktop Recorder there is sound. What is wrong?

Would anyone know why this program is no longer working? It starts up fine but as soon as I press record it freezes and I have to terminate the program. I've tried using some different settings but its always with the same result.Does anyone know what might have changed from 11.3 to 11.4 to cause these issues?p.s. Ok my respected Linux genius. This is my project. First I have a Windows / Linux combo OS set-up!
In my windows, I use the latest realtex sound driver as this gives me complete control with recording output control and Microphone gain control. In the set-up, there is a stereo mixer component with is necessary to engage the direct sound recording from my sound card. To make this all come together, I use a sound recording software [ free sound recorder 9 ] and to convert the recording to a wma, wav, or meg, I use Roxio 10 to produce audio cd's to play on all CD Players.
The challenge for me in Linux is to create the same set-up with Linux applications to produce the same professional results.Presently, my kubuntu 10.04 has Alsa sound drivers, with a version of realtek incorporated. I have the Alsa mixer software as well as Audacity as the sound recorder program. But no matter what I do, audacity depends on the microphone to record, which makes the final recording pure crap. If I lower the microphone boost or gain in my Alsa mix, then Audacity can not record the ambient sound from the speaker output and it will only recognize mono and pulse as the sound method. With the pre mention set up, Who has a set up identical to what is offered to windows that will do exactly the same for Linux. I basically want to record directly from the sound card in my Linux, without depending on using my microphone and then a CD burning program to make the conversion to MPEG or the necessary file format for the burned CD to play in all CD players, not just on a PC) I am trying to stay away from command line language in the terminal. I'm trying to record some audio from 4-track cassette tapes using Audacity and a Sound Blaster mp3+ external usb audio card.I'm using Karmic.I have fiddled with levels on the sound card using alsamixer, but the only I way I can detect any sound from the tapes when recording is by turning the levels all the way up in alsamixer, and in doing this, I can faintly make out the audio beneath a large wall of static. If the levels are not maxed out, I only get static when recording in Audacity.

The problem is that the "default" device for audio recording does not work but I have to select another device to do so. I always selected the "default" device for audio recoding but currently I have to select hw:0,2 device.
Another odd thing is that different programs show me different device. For example, Audacity shows me that I have the following audio recording devices:
- HDA Intel: ALC888 Digital (hw:0,1)
- HDA Intel: ALC888 Analog (hw:0,2)
- spdif
- default
The only one that works is hw:0,2.
But arecord shows me (when I execute "arecord -L") the following:
Finally, in KDE system preferences for audio I get that I have 2 different audio devices for audio recording:
- HDA Intel (ALC888 Analog): it is said that it will try first x-phonon (CARD=0, DEV=0) and, if the latter does not work, it will try plughw (CARD=0, DEV=0)
- HDA Intel (ALC888 Digital): it is said that it will try first x-phonon (CARD=0, DEV=1) and, if the latter does not work, it will try plughw (CARD=0, DEV=1)
Where is the hw:0,2? and how can I set the alsa system to use hw:0,2 as the default device for audio recording?
All of that would not be a problem but I also have an ubuntu 9.04 installed on a virtual machine (by using virtualbox) and audio recording doesn't work there. I suppose that it is becase of the virtual sound card is using default devices for playing and recording audio.
I must say that audio playback works fine in both host and guest systems. It is just audio recording.
I have intel 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller on my Asus Eee PC 1005PXD. Unfortunately, mic recording gives very bad sound. I've tried changing sound levels but nothing has helped. My system is OpenSUSE 11.4 XFCE

I use it for Team Speak, and Skype, so I know it works (I literally just placed a test call in skype to confirm...) I am trying to record a screen cast in OpenSUSE 11.3 and KDE4 with audio. Using any application that will do it.
I have tried gtkrecordmydesktop... but when I click on the "advanced" button to setup my audio... nothing happens... so I moved on. (it is supposed to present a window with options for setup... like sound source..)
I tried xvidcap, but I don't know what "device" to point the capture at. When I try to record from /dev/dsp (the default device) I get an error that says it cannot identify the file type. What "device" do I need to point to to get it to use my mic?
I have read about half a dozen forums about the issue, and many of them say that normally it is a mixer problem. I have systematically gone through my mixer item by item adjusting capture settings, mute, and volume levels on each item, then recorded to see if I got sound... and I got nothing. I know the device works, and I can get it to work in some programs (team speak, and skype), but How to I tell xvidcap to use it??? I found my device in the /dev list... it is /dev/snd/by-id/usb-046d_08c9_938E22B5-02 But when I point to that I get the same error.
I am not stuck on any one program to do this but I need to be able to record screen casts with synchronized audio in Linux. I am not afraid of the console or shell scripts... can anyone offer some suggestions... I have a working mic... I just need something that can use it.The best recommendation I've heard (so far) is running VNC and using camstudio in windows... but since my windows box is the same as my linux box... that is a bit difficult.... I really need a real linux solution.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to capture audio from a stream, NOT from the mic. This is what I'm doing: Start Audacity, push its record button, play a song. It shows that it is recording but when I play back the results, all background noise, conversation, etc, is in the recording as well as the audio from the song. If the mic is unplugged, I cannot record what I hear coming from the sound card (as in what you hear from the sound card is what you get). I got directions on how to do what I want here ( Looking (maybe) for audio mixer for use with Pulse Audio - Page 2 Posts # 4 and 5) but it's not permanent. I got the instructions in post #11 from that same page to make such a change permanent. I tried using the instructions to make the change permanent (I backed up my default.pa just in case something went wrong) and these are the changes I had made:

It works! Though I have to say that the audio quality is mediocre (to say the best). I blame it on the quality of the built-in microphone of this camera. It sounds like it was recorded in a giant bathroom.
I have installed opensuse 11.4 in my lenovo ideapad G460. But, I am not being able to make the inbuilt microphone work. It does not record anything and also does not work in skype. I am not that expert with linux. I looked at different posts in this forum regarding microphone detection problem, bit could not follow. How to setting up my inbuilt microphone?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just installed skype 2.1 beta 2 (the deb file) from the skype website, but the only option I see under Sound Devices -> Recording is "PulseAudio Server (local)" This doesn't work for me, as the skype test calls don't actually record anything I say. I use skype a lot and FINALLY got it working under karmic, but I needed to upgrade to lucid and now it's broken.
When I open Sound preferences and look at the Applications section, Skype shows up as recording when I run its test call... but no sound is recorded? How is it possible that my sound card picks up something recording but doesn't actually record it when I'm in skype?
Well, I've made progress in getting my recording to work.I was running a piece of software called liveice, and this used to work, but now with the current versions of of Fedora I just get noise and other strange problems. I stopped using liveice, and switched to darkice, and now my recordings are working without noise. I hear correct sound and the volume controls are acting sensible.Liveice was broken in a very weird way.The recording meter worked correctly, but the audio it actually recorded was just noise.This program uses OSS, as does darkice.When I record on the SB live, which is dsp2,sometimes I hear sound on it from the other sound card? Is that weird? Why would the input from the sound cards come in mixed like this?I have two sound cards, /dev/dsp and /dev/dsp1. One shows as ICH5/AD1985, and the other is an SB Live 5.1.I currently have Pulseaudio installed and running. I did a yum update just now.This is all with Fedora 12.This system was upgraded from 10 to 11.And then again from 11 to 12.

I just want to record some audio, but it's only recording on one channel, the left channel.I tried audacity and sound recorder. checked the sound preferences, Hardware set to Analog Stereo Duplex. In audacity Preferences > Devices > Recording, 2 (Stereo) is selected.When recording in audacity the output meter for the left channel shows activity while the right channel looks like it goes up a little bit but doesn't peak like the left channel. I have looked into the fixes of the 64bit MMPEG upgrades and gone through what steps I can find to fix the problem, although even after going through the re-compile in konsole, as well as then removing it and trying again using K Package Manager, I still have no Audio with my Video when recording in Cheese.Cheese records the video in ogv format, and I have attempted to convert the ogv file to avi format using VLC. I am able to watch the video in both VLC and Dragon Player... but no sound, just video. I have used Cheese to record video's using Ubuntu 8.10 onwards, but my current Kubuntu 10.04.01 (and when I had 10.04) has no sound in the recordings. I have not changed microphone, and I have checked all my connections. I can hear voice in the speakers through the microphone. I am using on board sound, which I have no other issues with. The error message I get tells me that my MMPEG install lacks the AAC Audio Codec.
