I just bought an Audigy SE sound card. It sounds fine for regular playback, but, for recording through Audacity, all I hear is this scratchy/distorted sound like it's turned all the way up. I tried lowering the volumes in alsamixer, but, that didn't work. Wanted to know if anyone had a solution before I send it back.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to record some audio from 4-track cassette tapes using Audacity and a Sound Blaster mp3+ external usb audio card.I'm using Karmic.I have fiddled with levels on the sound card using alsamixer, but the only I way I can detect any sound from the tapes when recording is by turning the levels all the way up in alsamixer, and in doing this, I can faintly make out the audio beneath a large wall of static. If the levels are not maxed out, I only get static when recording in Audacity.
View 3 Replies View Relatedi can't record with my mic anymore. I went to do so in audacity and i only get the noise it hears through the headphones. I am recording a second vocal track. The first track is the music. I looked at the alsamixer and the mic was originally muted and i unmuted. Should line be muted when i am using the mic? I also tried to record with the mic in sound recorder but got nothing there either.

I have found that by connecting the line out to the line in i am able to record, but the quality is rubbish, it will be a lot smoother recording it internally but I cant find a way of doing this, does anyone know how to record that way or know where i'm going wrong?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to capture audio from a stream, NOT from the mic. This is what I'm doing: Start Audacity, push its record button, play a song. It shows that it is recording but when I play back the results, all background noise, conversation, etc, is in the recording as well as the audio from the song. If the mic is unplugged, I cannot record what I hear coming from the sound card (as in what you hear from the sound card is what you get). I got directions on how to do what I want here ( Looking (maybe) for audio mixer for use with Pulse Audio - Page 2 Posts # 4 and 5) but it's not permanent. I got the instructions in post #11 from that same page to make such a change permanent. I tried using the instructions to make the change permanent (I backed up my default.pa just in case something went wrong) and these are the changes I had made:

Before Fedora 14 i have Fedora 12 and all was ok with sound. Starting with root account surprize i have sound. But after playing a song in xmms, sound is dead. I have tested sound in Windows and is ok.
I've recently changed motherboards from a gigabyte ma785gmt-ud2h to an ASUS M488T-M/USB3. For comparative purposes, I have done a fresh install of both Win 7 and Fedora 14 - everything works well except that the sound in Fedora is very scratchy and I cannot get the volume or clearness I was used to with the previous board.
Is there a driver which will fix this problem, or is this a quirk peculiar to ASUS boards? (The sound in Win 7 is crystal clear, by the way - I'm starting to think that the board was designed with Win 7 in mind.)
I have an issue with TVTIME's sound, its scratchy , the sound isn't clear. i can hear the sound & even understand, but there is a scratchy noise along with it,I didn't used to get it in ubuntu9.10 & 9.04,i don't have any issues with windows xp even,the tv tuner card is pinnacle PCTV version 5.

I switched to openSUSE 11.2 because the internet used to be slow on UBUNTU 9.10. INTERNET on openSUSE 11.2 is working like wonders for me as i use 3G internet from a NOKIA N73 MOBILE.ubuntu was was a touch slower on the internet side. i don't want to shift back to ubuntu ,UBUNTU 10.04 release is just 9 days away. FYI - xine,amarok,vlc,mplayer,smplayer all work fine without any issues,
It seems like it's mostly an issue with playing games. When I play certain 3D games, the audio may work for a little while, but will start getting scratching or full of static. Some times it's a lot, and other times it's just a little bit. Most times, the sound in the game will stop working after a short moment of static/scratchy sound. Then I am left with complete silence.I've seen on other posts that PCM volume may be turned up all the way. I wasn't sure what PCM was, but in the volume controls, I saw that you could adjust each individual application's volume. I assumed that this was PCM, as the game's volume was all the way up.I turned it down some, and I still got some static in the sound, and the sound still disappeared completely after a short time.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just installed 10.04 (64 bit, in case that matters) last night. I have onboard sound and video, and they working fine until I installed the proprietary drivers for my video card. When this happened, my sound got all fuzzy/scratchy. I can go back into the Hardware Drivers and remove the proprietary ones and then the sound is fine. My problem is that I want to use better drivers for my video, but not at the sacrifice of sound quality. I went to the nVidia site, and they have drivers from April 24, 2010 on there, but there's a couple problems with that. I don't know if they are any different than the ones I already installed through Ubuntu, and I don't know if they will cause the same issue. Since I'm fairly new to linux, installing the drivers from the .run file seems like more of an undertaking than I want to do right now, and I don't want to mess anything up and not be able to revert my changes. With the Hardware Drivers utility, I can easily remove the drivers and the sound works, but I don't know if that will be the case.
I have an ECS GeForce7050M-M motherboard. I can't really find specifics for chipsets, but the nVidia site detected a GeForce GTX 480 for video. If I recall correctly, my audio is some Realtek HD thing. I had this same problem when I tried 9.04, but I didn't narrow it down to the nVidia drivers at the time.

Sound does not work in my newly installed 10.04 (why I upgraded I will never know - I'm back to the same slowness problems with my ATI Radeon card as well). This time, however, I seemingly can't use my previous lazy approach of just switching on Digital support - it still won't work. Any suggestions - I'm really bad with Linux - and I have tried a couple of suggestions (I haven't recompiled alsa) - none of it will work.

I'm using openSUSE 11.4 x86_64. Today I came home from work and opened up Banshee... and to my surprise, nothing came out of the speakers. This morning everything worked just fine and my computer was left untouched since then. I found out that sounds works fine in Ubuntu and Windows 7, but in openSUSE... nothing. Well I tried deleting my sound card in YaST, and then reconfigured it. I used the Quick Automatic Setup option and then played a test sound. It worked so I opened Banshee again and picked a song to play... and still nothing.
Running speaker-test in Terminal returns no errors and no sound. In superuser terminal it returns "Playback open error: -111,Connection refused" and mplayer (in superuser terminal) returns "[AO_ALSA] Playback open error: Connection refused."
Are there some additional steps I should take to diagnose and/or troubleshoot the problem? I only know the problem is native to openSUSE, my speakers and sound card are both functional and sound works fine in Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7.
I have a Dell PowerEdge 830 Dual Pentium on which I installed 10.04. I have installed (slotted in) an SB Audigy 2 ZS card, from another PC, but it doesn't appear to be working. The donor PC suffered a graphics card failure that killed the motherboard. I can't tell whether the sound card is actually faulty. Did the sound card ought to work without any 'fiddling'?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI use 64-bit Ubuntu Lucid. This machine has an onboard Nvidia sound chip (which can not be disabled in BIOS), I also have an Soundblaster Audigy 2 card, which i'd rather use.
Previously, this was impossible because Ubuntu could only configure the first card. However, with the event of 10.4 and the easy-to-use selector in Sound Preferences I was hopeful that it would work now. But no luck.
I should mention that this machine dual boots to Win XP, and the Audigy works like a charm there, so it must be a Ubuntu problem. The Audigy 2 card is detected by Ubuntu, and is selectable in Sound Preferences, playback is fine with no errors, the source appears in Sound Preferences, but no sound.
These are the steps I have tried, without success:
- Disable the on-board card in Sound Preferences
- Cranking all the sliders to max in Alsamixer
- Checking that there's no mute in Alsamixer, Sound Preferences, Volume Control
- Adding lines to the bottom of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base making the Audigy the default card (0), and the Nvidia secondary (1). The output of

I managed to create a dual boot on separate drives Win7 and Linux UE 64bit and loading which ever OS I want to use with GRUB. Now everything is working dandy sofar in Linux except it seems that in sound properties, it's picking up my onboard sound & audigy4 card the latter being the one want to use. Could this be the reason why my audigy sound is not working. I have not plugged my speakers into the onboard sound to see if they work. So it seems as if linux is picking up both sound devices but not using either. Also linux sees my audigy 4 as a audigy2 card. I will tonight after work disable the onboard card in the bios to see if it works but if not, am I missing something here?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been using Ubuntu 10.10 for a few months now (after about a 5 year hiatus from all things Linux) and when I first booted up, everything worked perfectly out of the box except audio. I have a Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 4 sound card, and after searching the forums I used [URL] to successfully get my audio working.
Now, I'd like to try Kubuntu. Like Ubuntu, when I use the live CD everything but audio works. However, I can't install gnome-alsamixer like I did to fix the sound under Ubuntu (of course, I may not have had all the repositories enabled, I didn't think of this until later). Also, KMix didn't seem to offer an option that worked.
My trusty Tascam us122 is now an ex-card (as the guys from MP would say). I'm looking for a new one:1. Obviously it has to play really nicely with linux2. it needs to have phantom powerI'll be using it for recording voice (a Behringer Studio Condenser Mic) and my electric guitar.
View 4 Replies View RelatedIm on XP and am trying to get a 9 min piece of music from a cassette on my music centre into audacity on my comp got the line from earphone socket into the blue socket at back of comp (there are 3 sockets in a line then 3 more below them in a line go the line in socket... blue top left. )
Im getting sound ok on the comp with radio, its playing vids etc well so I cant think anything is wrong with the sound card. Playing the cassette on my music centre should get the sound into the comp and into the comp speakers.... but I just cant get a peep

Right now I just want to edit some audio in Audacity.
I switched back to Linux after a few years, because it usually is "better" than Windows.
I cannot get any sound. I installed ALSA removed and reinstalled PulseAudio and everything else I could find in a forum, to no avail.
Linux tells me my sound card is: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)
I used to be able to play MP3s but that went away in the process of all this.
Is there one solution I am missing, or do I have to change everything around depending on what I am doing?
I would like to use Linux for this but deadlines might make me go back to the dark side....
Audacity doesn't play any sounds, although it can record from my microphone. And kubuntu plays the startup sounds (BTW, how to turn them off?).

I've found somewhere on the forum I need to check whether "wave" in alsamixer is not muted. There is another posibility: change source in audacity to "wave". There is no option like this in my program and I don't know where can I find that "wave" in alsamixer. I don't use any like artsd, jack... Just alsa + fluxbox + audacity.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to record in Audacity in Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit on a Dell Studio 1535 laptop.The problem is not that its not recording, per se.Rather, the problem is its not recording the way that I want it to.
Its recording from the built-in mic, and I want to use the mic jack instead as a line in from a guitar (well, technically, an acoustic-electric resonator, but its close enough to a guitar to call it a guitar).
I have tried using various devices for recording, and changing settings in both the Volume Control and Sound Preferences, but no matter what I do, Audacity still records from my built-in microphones, instead of from the line-in.
