Of course, the best way to record streaming audio is to grab the stream directly, but with emerging technologies, before the stream grabbers catch up, it can be difficult or impossible to directly grab a stream. The Akamai HDS format is a good example of this. The fragment packets are hard to grab individually and hard to combine. Something like [URL] .... didn't work for me.
Furthermore, as technology advances, stream grab techniques will have to play catchup.
But what normally works is capture from the soundcard, after the stream has been decoded by the player or browser. I have used Total Recorder [URL] .... on windows to do this for many years.
Is there a debian package that can capture sound from the soundcard, and save it as mp3 or ogg? And will this package run on the raspberry pi?

Ok my respected Linux genius. This is my project. First I have a Windows / Linux combo OS set-up!
In my windows, I use the latest realtex sound driver as this gives me complete control with recording output control and Microphone gain control. In the set-up, there is a stereo mixer component with is necessary to engage the direct sound recording from my sound card. To make this all come together, I use a sound recording software [ free sound recorder 9 ] and to convert the recording to a wma, wav, or meg, I use Roxio 10 to produce audio cd's to play on all CD Players.
The challenge for me in Linux is to create the same set-up with Linux applications to produce the same professional results.Presently, my kubuntu 10.04 has Alsa sound drivers, with a version of realtek incorporated. I have the Alsa mixer software as well as Audacity as the sound recorder program. But no matter what I do, audacity depends on the microphone to record, which makes the final recording pure crap. If I lower the microphone boost or gain in my Alsa mix, then Audacity can not record the ambient sound from the speaker output and it will only recognize mono and pulse as the sound method. With the pre mention set up, Who has a set up identical to what is offered to windows that will do exactly the same for Linux. I basically want to record directly from the sound card in my Linux, without depending on using my microphone and then a CD burning program to make the conversion to MPEG or the necessary file format for the burned CD to play in all CD players, not just on a PC) I am trying to stay away from command line language in the terminal. I have a TV tuner card with its output connected to the CD in of an integrated sound card. Video is OK, and the sound also gets thorough (to the line out) when running xawtv, for example. I'm trying to record some audio from 4-track cassette tapes using Audacity and a Sound Blaster mp3+ external usb audio card.I'm using Karmic.I have fiddled with levels on the sound card using alsamixer, but the only I way I can detect any sound from the tapes when recording is by turning the levels all the way up in alsamixer, and in doing this, I can faintly make out the audio beneath a large wall of static. If the levels are not maxed out, I only get static when recording in Audacity.
View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter installing an external sound card, Im having some weird issues. The cards chipset is fully supported by suse, (CM8738) so I dont think thats the problem. Besides, I'm getting sound, but not in some applications. The system's sounds work just fine (login, logout themes) amarok plays without any problems, kaffeine, mplayer they all work flawlessly, in fact I can see the difference in quality between the onboard sound and my new card. However, no web browser is able to play any sound at all, firefox, opera or chrome, nothing,zip. Plus, vlc cant reproduce sound either, nor can smplayer.
I've tried switching channels on and off(muting)in kmixer and in alsamixer, on the console, with no results. I disabled the onboard audio on the bios before installing the new card, however my ati video card has integrated sound, which I cant disable.... I used to get this exact same problem randomly with the onboard sound, but I just had to go to kmixer and turn up the "pcm" channel volume, which was set to 0, and I had sound again on my browser. However this card's pcm channel is at max and turning it up or down affects the whole systems volume, not just the browser's. Is it better to just reinstall the sound system, if so how could I do that.
I bought a Diamond Xtreme Sound 5.1 sound card because I had read online that this card was a good choice with Linux and came with universal driver software. I installed the hardware correctly (as it works with WinXP) but I'm not able to get it working with Ubuntu.

Started off with a HP with a Creative Labs XiFi soundcard, but am now using a Dell with a Creative Labs Audigy. Sound worked perfectly on the Dell since a clean install (about 7 months ago). I turned it on a week or so ago, and no sound! Even the little sound indicator in the notification area has gone.

I installed pulse-audio everything worked great except i couldn't get sound out of wow if i started mangler first and vice-versa. I then found a version of Mangler that worked with alsa. So i uninstalled mangler and pulse-audio, installed mangler-alsa. Everything works great now. The problem is when i uninstalled Pulse-audio i lost all my sliders in Yast > Hardware > Sound > other > volume. The only thing that shows up is master volume > Test. My sound works great just can't adjust anything. How do i get my sliders back. I would like some advice before i screw something up. (lol) My Sound card is according to sound configuration SBx00 Azalia(Intel HDA) - Driver snd-hda-intel.Opensuse 11.2 KDE 4.3.5

sound card is working well inside SuSE and everything is ok there. But when I install Windows 7 or XP inside Xen Virtualization software, I can't use sound card and Windows is unable to find any sound hardware.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am setting up a mythtv/xmbc box on Ubuntu 10.10 (natty does not install on my hardware). I have a Sabrent TV PCIRC tuner card, which seems to work fine with the proper card and tuner settings. My on-board sound is HDA-Intel surround sound, which I have configured as analog duplex.
Currently the sound works fine through my speakers plugged into any jack on the back of the PC (two speakers, one jack). I can watch ripped movies and listen to music. The TV tuner is pumping sound from its external jack -- if I hook it up directly to the speakers it works fine. I can feed the Tuner's sound to the line-in on my motherboard, but nothing comes out. In the sound manager, i have the input device selected and the input level shows that the sound is coming in through the connector, and I can test the speakers and they work fine, but they don't seem to be communicating that the sound coming in needs to be pumped out through the speakers.
trying to get everything set up in Debian lenny on my new Toshiba staellite L500. I have successfully installed the wireless drivers and graphics card and have them both up and running. But I'm having trouble with the sound card. Specifically, it appears to be installed but I cant get any sound or any devices related to sound (speakers, volume control, alsamixer) to work at all.

I seem to be having sound issues on CentOS 5. When I run the sound card configuration, my sound card is recognized and the test sound plays fine but there is no sound coming out of any applications. This just started today and I have made no changes to my computer or installed any new software.
Below is the output from lspci :
In ubuntu 10.04 my X-fi Fatal1ty Titanium sound card worked for my speakers but I had to use onboard sound for the mic. When I installed 10.10 the sound card no longer works at all so I have to run the speakers through the onboard sound.
The second problem I have is that Skype will not pick up my microphone all other programs seem to be able to record from the microphone just fine but skype does not. Ive tried selecting all the different input device options from the skype settings but none of them seem to work.
EDIT: Sound doesn't work at all in wine.
EDIT2: The X-fi card no longer shows up in the sound control panel.
I have installed xubuntu version 10. My sound card is a Yamaha dS-1S, and seems to be properly configured. Alsa mixer doesn't indicates any error. However, I can't manage to get any sound. I have checked that jacks are correctly plugged.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI encountered this on a 10.3 system but there might be similar problem with the 11 series. Having gone through the business of obtaining config info on this card via pnpdump and subsequently using Yast to configure and install it, I encountered a situation whereby the card was fully functional as far as the "Test Sound" option of Yast was concerned. However, after a reboot, it was not loaded and no sound was possible. Debugging the "alsasound" script, I discovered that the directory /proc/asound was not in place at that time and, therefore, sound was not started.
The solution was to add the module name (snd_sbawe) to /etc/sysconfig/kernel to the parameter "MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT". Seems like Yast did not see a reason to do this itself.
A friend has intalled Linux after a load of problems with windows. He very kindly installed my Edirol UA25 soundcard, and when i click 'test' on System-preferences-sound, it indeed plays a sound. The problem is that when I try to play anything from the internet on firefox, or any sounds in VLC, or any other application, it doesn't work. I believe I'm running Ubuntu Studio, version 8.04, but I am not sure. I have an Athlon 64 bit processor if that's relevant.

(What I'm really trying to do is sync a sports broadcast by putting a delay on AM audio, as described here. I'm stuck at the part where it says "this shouldn't be too difficult".) I've seen some hints that there might be code-heavy solutions using LADSPA or some JACK SDK, but there's just gotta be a simpler way. I'm hoping for something like

I'm running WinXP Pro on a Dell XPS 710 with a Creative X-Fi sound card. Been away from Linux for a year or so since I got this machine and would like to come back. Can you suggest/recommend a sound card (5.1 preferred) that has a high success rate with the Linux OS. I will probably install Open Suse or Kubuntu. I'm more than willing to dump the high end sound card for less flash.

Preliminary checks of sound level settings and obvious dumb stuff but there is still no sound. The problem seems to be that the system does not recognize the existence of the sound card and insists on using alternative audio devices.

I'm relatively new to debian, but an intermediate linux user. I've just installed wheezy and I'm having trouble setting sound up. When plugging my headphones in via the motherboard, sound works fine. Great. I plugged in my USB Sound Card (Audiobox 44VSL) and no dice. It's set as card 1 under aplay -l, yet no sound. I know this box works on GNU/Linux because I used to use it in Xubuntu a couple years ago with no problems at all.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy PC has the ASUS P7H55-M SI motherboard with the audio chipset VIA VT1708S. Under Fedora 13 (64-bit) I have no sound although the audio chipset seems to be properly recognised and supported by the OS.
I used the alsmixer application and I set the volume for all channels, including PCM to their maximum value but still I get no sound. When the OS boots I hear a "click" sound coming from the audio chipset when it is initialised by the kernel but then the sound stops and I hear nothing.
Note that I do not have this problem with Ubuntu 10.04 but I have the same issue with openSUSE 11.3 Milestone 7. My guess is that F13 and openSUSE 11.3 having newer kernel/alsa software versions exhibit this problem due to some bug introduced to the code.

I have decided to move my laptop over to openSUSE after a terrible experience with Vista. I have some experience with Ubuntu, but I'm a brand new suse user. I installed 11.3 but haven't been able to get any sound out of it. The laptop is a Compaq Presario CQ45-307tx (more specs at link below) [URL] The first thing I tried was I updating the alsa firmware using the konsole command "zypper install alsa-firmware". The firmware updated fine, but still no sound. The next thing I tried was editing a file based on the advice found at the link below. [URL] This didn't work either, but I wasn't too optimistic to begin with due the differences between our systems.
