Ubuntu Multimedia :: HVR-1250 - Found Fixes Don't Work?
Oct 9, 2010
I am really confused/frustrated/exhausted, now. I bought a HVR-1250 for a PVR and music/media HTPC that I just built, and installed Mythtv last night. The backend continues to report it as "failed to open" in the capture card section. Having read through all of the recent information I could find (mostly forums), I've tried card=3, 7, 12, 18, 19, 20, and 21 options in the new cx23885.conf file, and the card's still not recognized in Mythtv. dmesg shows me the same info from most recent screen captures (other forums, too), and lspci still reports it as a 1250 rev. 04. (Before I made the new conf file, the card was listed with device code 0070:2259.
I'm new to all things linux, and I have no idea where else to look, or what else to do. I'd prefer to not use Win Media Player, as I've heard it has more playback issues (skips, jerks, etc.) with recorded high-def OTA programs. If I'm wrong, I have no problem with switching OSes, as I just want to be able to record high-def TV and watch it when the baby is asleep. Is there something I'm forgetting, or am I just screwed, for some reason I don't understand?

This is a writeup to help you enable your Hauppauge 1250 tv tuner card so you can use it with programs such as Mythtv. This will enable multiple cards. I am assuming your card isn't working "out of the box". You can check if it is recognized in the OS by following the instructions in "How to tell if the TV card is recognized" below.
In linux land, the 1250 is not just a 1250 but can be a variety of designations. I own older 1250's which are listed as 1270's. My newer cards are listed as 1255's. These cards usually don't work "out of the box" with linux. You have learn the ropes and enable them yourself. You have to have time on your hands and be a glutton for punishment when it comes to setting up linux but a stable, well running system is worth it. If you need everything done for you and want it "out of the box", you might as well ride back to Bill Gates' Boneless Chicken Ranch.
First off, here is an updated cardlist for the cx23885 driver that is used with the 1250 amongst other tuner cards:

I've looked everywhere for this and I can't find an answer. I've got a hauppauge wintv-1250 card; ubuntu and mythtv recognize it OOTB. The dvb digital tuner portion of this card works great. I had quite a time figuring out how to set it up, but it all works pretty good now. nyway, the only problem is that I need to record 2 sources: 1 is RF, the other is from an analog cable box. So, I figured I should be able to record analog video from the s-video input. Is this possible with mythtv, and if so, how? I could watch it in windows with the software that came with the card, so I know it's possible, but I'd rather avoid windows if I can.

I recently ran out of space with my free 2 GB U1 account. So I upgraded to a 20 GB pack. This was shortly after upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10, during which I changed the name of my computer from 'Rain' to 'El-Mustango'. Don't ask.Anyway, in the process of upgrading U1 to 20 GB, I noticed the machine I had connected on the website was still called Rain. So without really thinking, I removed it.Now I can't get U1 to sync. If it tries at all, it tells me that I've got no free space. And when I say "it tells me", I mean "someone should fix the bug where it pops up a notification for every single file it tries to sync".I've gone through every fix I can find online. My issue is the u1sdtool -s shows:Quote:
State: AUTH_FAILED
connection: With User With Network
description: auth failed

I'm getting this error message after I login saying "Could not update ICEauthority file home/jon/.ICEauthority" Loading then takes longer than usual and the audio indicator doesn't work. I'm running ubuntu on my laptop so the Volume button doesn't work.I've tried changing the ownership of the files as mentioned in one thread(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=949750)I've also tried deleting the file (kept a back up) and then restarting, but that failed as well.(http://computers-linux.blogspot.com/...read-file.html)Another reason I wanted to start a new thread is because I noticed, that there wasn't any post with people getting this error in newer versions of Ubuntu.

is there any simple way how to upgrade 0.22+fixes (under Mythbuntu 9.10) to 0.23+fixes? For example any debian package (which I didn't found) to download and simply unpack and install? I'm afraid that if I modify this MythTV, Open Source DVR for 0.23 and use it on 9.10 with 0.22 I'll have problems with directories and so on...

Do you guys remember the inability for lucid to boot with some intel graphics cards?
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1466337
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1472282
Anyway I used a workaround to get it working on my Toshiba Portege laptop. However from it stemmed slower graphics, no splash, et cetera. That didn't worry me too much. However, I am now at the stage where I am getting arrays of different issues (that don't necessarily relate) and I would like to just have a nice clean install. I have been upgrading since 8.something and I long for freshness. My files are allready off.
Has anyone patched the kernel or anything? I'm purely a newbish end user and have not been following launchpad or anything. I did the workaround the week of the release. any fixes floating around? If not, I'll go back to 9.10.

I am trying to restore my desktop to how it was, what I assume is default. Some background. I am not new to computers but not an advanced user by any means. While very comfortable in Windows, with Linux I feel like I am trying to learn a foreign language by reading a translation dictionary. Most times things go right but when things go wrong I have no idea why. I am running Xubuntu on an ASUS 701. I installed it based on these directions:[URL]
By the way under Sytem Monitor I am told I am running Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid) Kernel Linux 2.6.32-27-generic GNOME 2.30.2. I'm not sure what all that means or if it is relevant. I have been thrilled 70% of the time. Twice I have had to do a complete reinstall because so far that is the only way I have found to fix it when things go bad. I am hoping that this time I can avoid that. This morning I installed Wine from WineHQ and followed the directions on this page: [URL] That didn't work so well for me. Somehow it took up 2GB of disk space, scrambled my desktop and Thunderbird no longer worked. I reinstalled Thunderbird but that resulted in losing my inbox I uninstalled Wine but can't figgure out how to free up 1 GB of installed applications, I'll ask about that in a sepatate thread. I have searched and tried all kinds of tips and tricks on fixng the desktop. Deleting /.cache. Deleting /.config. Nothing. My final attempt was following the intructions here: [URL] Still not fixed. I tried all of the steps. Previously I had a tab labled "Apllications" in the upper left hand corner. Next to it was "Places" Then a button for Firefox. The Shutdown door button was in the upper right hand corner. My battery status, network status and clock were to the left of the door.

I have an HP mini 1116nr, with the BCM4312 wireless card. I do not have any wireless or wired connection on this mini.I have looked at dozens of posts and different forums, sites, ect and most methods are the same and have not worked for me.The mini comes with a wireless switch to turn on the wireless on the front, I have tried to turn it on at almost every point in my troubleshooting with no change.I have copied and installed the following software pacs via a removable usb hd to my home file in a folder named linux and these are the results I have gotten. I have worked on this for about 10hrs today and several more hours across the week, if anyone can help me I would appreciate a line by line step by step instruction to get through this because it seems I am making an error in the steps in the forum for installing without internet connection.

So I've been reading around a bit, and have found a few fixes for this Resolving Hosts problem, but none of them have fixed mine yet. Basically what happens is all browsers fail to load pages, pinging local network works, but pinging default gateway doesn't. Cannot ping external websites and cannot reach update or upgrade servers for ubuntu. All networking works as normal on all other PCs in house, as well as the windows 7 boot I have on my ubuntu PC.
What I've tried:Disabled IPv6 completely by preventing the module from booting up Manually setting network settings instead of using the router's DHCP server Changing DNS servers from ISP to Google public DNS to OpenDNS Buying a new ethernet card And a few other things I can't remember off the top of my head, none of which worked. From memory, all this just started happening out of the blue. I recently changed from Windows to Ubuntu, and was enjoying the switch but all of a sudden I couldn't get on the internet on Ubuntu.
Now, I'm not sure why, but I decided to ping myself. Not my LAN ip, but our router's WAN ip. It worked, albeit took a little while to return a response the first packet, but each subsequent packet after that was a normal speed (~0.5ms). The strange thing about this was that I found that for a few seconds after pinging myself, I could access the internet. After a few seconds though, it returns to it's resolving hosts self again, which another self-ping would fix.
Consequently, in order to browse, I have an open terminal constantly pinging myself which appears to be working. Not ideal, and certainly not something I would like to keep doing for long, but it works for now. I really like Ubuntu, but if I can't get this net thing fixed, I can't finish moving over from Windows!

I am running Fedora 14 with KDE on my IBM T60p Thinkpad laptop. The wireless network adapter is Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG. The wireless network uses WPA2 with AES encryption.
Until yesterday my wireless worked fine. I originally installed wlassistant and it enabled my Network Manager to work with WPA2. My XP on the same machine still works on wireless without any issues, so both the adapter hardware and the router are eliminated as sources of the problem.
Yesterday I booted up my Linux and noticed there were 20+ security updates and I installed them all. It asked me to logoff and log back in. I did, and since then my wireless is dead as a doorknob. When the wireless adapter initializes it prompts me for the WPA2 password, however the password is visible in the password field. I click to accept it but it cant connect. Network manager just sits there waiting for authentication and nothing happens. The wpa_supplicant service is disabled, however I honestly cant remember if it was enabled before, considering that I use wlassistant. If I enable it, still nothing happens.
Anyway, thinking that the security updates possibly broke wlassistant, I uninstalled it and installed the latest version. The old version was 12, the new one is 13. It makes no difference though.I always use my laptop on wireless, therefore I am dead in the water.
Its really frustrating how something always breaks on this OS. It resembles a leaky boat that always has at least one hole. By the time I plug it another one appears, so I spend 90% of my Linux time fixing problems and have the remaining 10% for work and play. Windows and Mac work out of the box and apparently thats what 99% of users want, hence the 1% market share
Anyway, sorry about this, however losing my network connectivity from installing security updates really ticked me off. Its pretty unacceptable. Anyone has any ideas which recent fixes may be to blame? I am sure it didnt only happen to me.

Upon logging into kde 4.4 the left mouse button (3 button usb mouse) becomes unresponsive on certain windows. For instance the toolbar may still respond to left-click while other windows on the desktop do not register it. However more and more windows/panels become unresponsive rather quickly. The same happens for right-click sometimes but far less often. Some functionality can be recovered by re-plugging the mouse.
Logging out and logging back in solves the problem until the next reboot. I have tried different users and wiping the .kde and .kde4 folders. The problem persists. I can stil work by relogging every time I turn on my computer but it does waste a lot of time so if there are any ideas I'd apreciate it. KDE 4.4 release 3 (There seems to be no updates in YAST available)

I was dumb and uninstalled the nvidia drivers too not realizing my internet didn't work in the command line. I need to install the drivers from the live cd unless there is another way. I don't want to have to reinstall!

I installed debian 4.0 (etch) on an old computer with some pickled graphics card in it, and then I upgraded the computer to one with slightly newer hardware only without the graphics card (the new one used on board graphics). I moved the hard drive from the old one to the new one but when I booted it up it failed to start the X-server and I got some errors listed for "device not found" and "no screens found".
I tried using "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" however I can't seem to find a working configuration. It seems pretty silly that when installing debian it can detect all this automatically with no problems but when it comes to changing some hardware around you are left in the dark with a complicated re-configuration process. Is there not some way to automate this? I'd rather not have to re-install everything

If I go to the website and download the ISO file is it the exact same one that was released in April or will it contain the latest patches (e.g. security fixes, etc) that have been release since then? If it doesn't I suppose I'll have to download the entire ISO file, install the OS, and then have another couple hundred MB to download which is not what I'd prefer.

When I installed my 64 bit system of Ubuntu 10.04 the sound worked very well and I were very happy. The problem started however when I installed Skype which uses pulseaudio. As soon as I start skype (or any other application that uses pulse, HoN for example) the applications sound output or input does not work at all. If I have pulseaudio started in some way, applications that I suppose do not use it like spotify or flash player stops to produce sounds.
