Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Change Primary Display With Ati Ccc Or Xorg.config?

Apr 8, 2011

I have google'd the crap out of this and have yet to find a "solved" forum. I currently have 2 sapphire ati 5770's in xfire. I also have two monitors. My (preferred) primary display has a dvi input and my other display is hdmi. I have them both plugged into only one of the cards. For some reason it keeps setting the hdmi display as the primary. And I want them in extended view. The ATI CCC suite does not support changing the primary monitor and I have tinkered with the xconfig but I do not really know what I am doing, so I have ultimately not been successful. here is my xorg.config file.

Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "aticonfig Layout"
Screen 0 "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0" 0 0

Fedora Hardware :: System-config-display Creates Incorrect Xorg.conf?

Mar 3, 2010

Now that I have system-config-display installed I tried to create a new xorg.conf so I can have 3D acceleration, etc using the correct driver. But the xorg.conf file generated does not work. It locks up the laptop (Toshiba Satellite A45-S250). I don't understand why this happens because the Fedora 12 Live CD (for i686) works find on boot.

I tried looking for the xorg.conf file after booting the live CD but it doesn't exist. I don't understand what is happening here. Also, when I used an older version of Fedora (8 I think) the X driver was i810 which worked fine. It gave me all the 3D acceleration, etc. When I installed F11 it gave me a dumbed down install using the VESA driver. What happened to the i810 driver? Why does the intel driver not work? Why does the Live CD work great but an installed system not?

Necessary info: Toshiba Satellite A45-S25 Fedora 12 (preupgraded from F11)

Ubuntu :: Change Primary Display On Dual Monitor Setup?

Mar 10, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 this evening. I have a Nvidia Geforce 8500GT video card with two monitors hooked up (one to the cards VGA, the other to the DVI). I installed Nvidia drivers and Ubuntu is working with both monitors fine.

The problem I am having is it chose the monitor plugged into VGA as the primary (uses that monitor for the toolbars) when I really want them to go on the monitor that is plugged into DVI. Is there anyway for me to switch which monitor Ubuntu treats as the primary?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Setting External Monitor As Primary Display?

Aug 19, 2010

I have an ASUS 1000HE laptop running Lucid 10.04 (Desktop not netbook version) which I have connected to an external display (LCD). I don't intend to use the laptop by itself anymore therefore I have configured the display properties to turn off the laptop display and use the external display as primary. However, when the PC enters 'locked mode' or the display powers down after a defined period of time (as set in the properties) when I wake the PC and the display, it turns the laptop monitor back on .... switches the laptop screen to primary display (i.e. with the panels etc displayed on it) and extends the desktop to the external display! The only thing I can then do is go back into the configuration utility and turn the laptop monitor off again and boom, everything is fine and dandy displaying on the external display again! I don't really want to have to do this every time I come back to the PC after it has been locked nor do I want to write a script (if it can be avoided) to deal with it!

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Defining Primary Display ( 3 Monitor Setup)?

Jul 6, 2011

I have a Radeon HD 5830, running 3 monitors on 10.10 64bit with the 10.6 video driver. The three monitors ( from left to right ) :

DFP1 : 1152x2048
DFP2 : 1920x1200
CRT1 : 1360x768

The problem I'm having is getting the middle monitor to be the primary one.

Running
xrandr --output DFP2 --primary

puts the panel on the middle screen but my docky and icons stay on the left screen. Flash videos also open up on the portrait left monitor which looks awful. Ideally I would like the icons on DFP1, docky on P2 and flash videos to open on P2. But I would definitely settle for everyone to be on the middle screen and drag it around as I please.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Detect TV In NVidia-settings With Xorg-config

Feb 14, 2010

I have connected my computer to my LCD-TV (HDMI-cable) to enjoy my movies and such, on a big screen. I have nVidia GeForce 7050 so in nvidia-settings I've been using the TwinView configuration which allows me to see both the monitor and the TV.

There was a bit of trouble-shooting but it worked just fine until yesterday when I changed my monitor to a new one and on the way probably messed up in nvidia-settings. I thought it would be easy to fix it but the configuration (in nvidia-settings) is stuck on "separete x-screen" and doesn't allow any changes at all. When I hit the "Detect display" nothing happens although I have the TV connected!

Maybe my xorg.config could tell somebody what is wrong. I've been messing around with the file and made lots of changes acc to different advices but I really don't understand the options and settings so I'm afraid I'll soon do something inreperable.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Xorg/HDMI Display Anomalies With LCD TV

Feb 28, 2010

I just bought a new desktop with integrated intel graphics and built in HDMI. I don't have a monitor, only a 42 inch LCD TV. Now, when I plugged in the HDMI cable, when ubuntu loaded, it was oversized(overscanned) cutting off both panels(think zoomed in a bit). After failing to fix, I bought an ATI HD4350. When using the open source ati drivers(default on reboot), the screen looked perfect and fit perfectly when using the DVI to HDMI cable to the TV, was a bit UNDERsized when using a regular HDMI cable to the HDMI port on the new video card. Now, when I installed Catalyst...same problem as before. Entire image was overscanned using either port. Decided to get a better video card anyways, so returned ATI for Nvidia 9500. When booting again into a clean install, with nv drivers and using DVI-> HDMI cable(9500 doesn't have HDMI out), the image again fit perfectly on the TV. When installing the Nvidia proprietary driver, image goes back to being overscanned(Exactly same proportion as intel HDMI out and ATI with catalyst). Thankfully Nvidia gives an overscan correction tool that I scaled the picture down with, but it's ever so slightly off center or our of proportion(that is, it leaves small black strip on either side when height is adjusted perfectly).

In a nutshell, the open source drivers display perfectly. Proprietary and intel drivers are overscanned. Now, to confuse you anymore, with Lucid, even the open source ATI driver is overscanned by default. I'm trying to track this problem down and have no idea where to start.

I've Googled and AllowTcpForwarding is set to yes, as is X11Forwarding.. but it still doesn't work. Chrome can connect to the server, but says the connection was closed before any data was sent.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 X64 / Nvidia Quadro NVS / Dell E6500 - Cannot Display This Mode' On The Primary Monitor

May 21, 2010

I am posting this to hear if there are others with display issues on Dell E6500 laptop with the Nvidia Quadro NVS 160 driver. This problem is starting to annoy me a great deal, but I am uncertain how I should move forward. In short; I have Ubuntu 10.04 x64 installed on my Dell E6500 laptop. When using only the laptop, everything works great. The second I plug it into the docking station (the laptop lid closed) and want to use my two external monitors (Dell 2001FP) I'm in trouble. I cant see anything and what I get is a 'DVI: Cannot Display this Mode' on the primary monitor - If i try a regular VGA cable I get nothing but a black screen.

I have played around with the Nvidia config but it cant find my monitors and therefore I cant do much. I am aware of the various "hack the xorg.conf" options, but I before I do that I wanted to see if others had experienced the same thing. I had hoped that we were pasted the hack stage and that primary functions such as display would work by now.

Software :: Xorg Config For Fglrx ATI 4290 Dell 2405FPW?

Jun 19, 2010

I've just built a new system, the motherboard has an inbuilt ATI 4290 video (part of AMD GX890) and I'm using it with a Dell 2405 monitor. I've installed the latest Catalyst driver (10.6) from the AMD site, I can build the driver and X starts OK. The control panel for Catalyst says it will support 1920x1200 for a DVI connected screen - which mine is. When I start X it's always 1600x1200 and if I set the resolution via the Catalyst control panel, I get a display that has a black edge on the right of the monitor - about 1/4 of the screen.

At this point, I haven't tried setting any Modelines in xorg.conf as the fglrx driver is getting the information from the monitor via DDC and I'm assuming (probably a bad idea) that this data is correct.

Can anyone make any suggestions regarding this? Should I be setting Modelines regardless of what the driver gets from the monitor? Log files available if requested. Other that the 1600x1200 limitation, the system (AMD X6 1090t) runs very well.

Ubuntu Installation :: Change Primary Partitions Into Logical?

May 9, 2011

Windows and Ubuntu worked fine. I also planned to create another partition for data and two more partitions for Arch Linux. And here is the problem.I just assumed that the Extended partitions were created logical but actually they are also primary. So, as things stand, all my 7 partitions are primary and I cannot create any more partitions.I must've erred somewhere during the Ubuntu installation. Is it possible ti change the Extended partitions into logical, without affecting all the stuff within? Any ideas? Otherwise I will have to delete everything after Windows and install Ubuntu again, making sure that I create logical partitions in the Extended part
