Ubuntu Servers :: Config - Change / Add From The Default OpenSSH Config Files To Get Tunnelling To Work?

Jul 10, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu Server 11.04 with OpenSSH, trying to create an ssh tunnel (for web traffic) to it from my (also Ubuntu) laptop. This is the command I'm using to create the tunnel:

Code: ssh -ND localhost:8080 george@192.168.1.20 I had it all working on a virtual machine.. which was deleted What settings/lines do I need to change/add from the default OpenSSH config files to get tunnelling to work? I've Googled and AllowTcpForwarding is set to yes, as is X11Forwarding.. but it still doesn't work. Chrome can connect to the server, but says the connection was closed before any data was sent.

Ubuntu :: Change Default Zoom Level In Evince?

Jan 2, 2010

I need to change the default zoom level for Evince. There must be some way to do this. Besides, can Evince start without any PDF file loaded? Also, what is the command line to execute evince? (I run Linux Mint 8 based on Koala 9.10). Whenever it loads a file for which it assigns a zoom level more than 175% or 200%, the whole PC hangs if I click on the "reduce zoom" icon in the toolbar. This is a very big regression.

This is ridiculous! Even ePDFViewer is better than this. I really would like to stay with Evince for the time being, and not need to move to Foxit.

General :: Change Permissions Of Rc.sysinit In Run Level 1?

Apr 6, 2010

While playing with my Linux box, I edited rc.sysinit in /etc/rc.d/ folder. But now when I boot into run level 3 or 5, I get complain that system cannot run /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit. I boot into run level 1, and checked its permissions, which is rw-r--r-- . It should be rwxr-xr-x. I tried to use chmod to change its permissions, but it responded that "Read Only file system" Now how can I change its persmissions when in run level 1. In run level 3 and 5, machine does not boot. My box has Fedora Core 2 with kernel 2.6.20.

Ubuntu :: Change Default File Permissions?

Jul 3, 2011

my dad has been using Ubuntu for a few weeks now and likes it, however he's having some issues regarding read-only files. He's a doctor and frequently has to download word files to edit, however they always download as a read-only file. While this isn't particularly difficult to do, he finds doing it tiresome and because he isn't the most proficient PC user, may have difficulty with it when I return to school after the summer. I was hoping that there's some way to change the default settings so that all files downloaded are writeable.

Additionally, he has a number CD-RWs which he both retrieves files from and stores them to, however when trying to access these CDs he is told that they are read-only. Right clicking on the CD and trying to change the access permissions doesn't work (says that permissions can't be changed because the disc is read-only).

Fedora :: Cannot Change Default Applications Or File Associations

Jun 15, 2011

I recently upgraded to Fedora 15 and am super-happy with it. Unfortunately, I have a minor issue that I haven't yet figured out how to fix: I can't change the default applications or the file type associations. For instance, I'd like to set Chromium as my default browser. When I first login, I tell it to set itself as default. But after I end my session and log back it, Firefox is back to being the default browser.

I have the same issues when trying to change what applications open filetypes. .rtf files have been opening in Wordpad in Wine. When I try to change it to Writer through the "Open with" dialog, it retains the change for that session but resets after I log out. I actually ended up having to uninstall Calibre because it was opening .odt files instead of LibreOffice and I couldn't change it permanently.

Ubuntu :: Change The Default File Manager In GNOME?

Dec 13, 2010

How can I change the default file manager in GNOME? I've got these notes but neither methods work:

GUI
Change under 'Session control' in 'Ubuntu Tweak'
Delete nautilus and type in pcmanfm or another file manager such as thunar
Apply
Quit ubuntu-tweak
Reboot

TERMINAL:

Code:

gksu gedit /usr/share/applications/nautilus-folder-*handler.desktop

Then replace 'nautilus --no-desktop %U' to whatever you like. Example: pcmanfm %U

Save, logout & login

Update: This works. Why does the Ubuntu Tweak method not work though?

Code:

sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/nautilus-folder-*handler.desktop

Note: I know I can do a chmod, but I don't want to do this again and again for every new file I create.

General :: How To Change Default?

Jul 20, 2010

I don't know what is up with our servers, but each time I upgrade Linux or switch back to Windows it seems that the default providers have changed, and as such I'm having trouble finding out how to change the default run level from 5 to 3 in Ubuntu 10.4. I had tried the /fstab file, and although the last time I made this configuration was under Suse, I'm not even sure that's how I did it for OpenSuse. I did find how to pass the text argument to the kernel but I don't want to disable GDM so that I have to renable it everytime I login. I'm unsure of how this will affect the startx command, at which point I'll be stuck sifting through books for random commands that might perform the task I would like.To elaborate, the reason I'd like to switch my default run-time level is so that I can configure an nvidia proprietary driver, which requires that the x server not be running and I could switch tty's but that doesn't shutdown the x server and although someone had given me a key combination to the effect of ctrl-alt-backspace,backspace I was advised against using it as it might cause damage to the integrity of the data used to load gdm.

Server :: OpenVPN Range Address / When Change Static IP To Dynamic IP In Config File OpenVPN Didn't Work?

Feb 13, 2010

I want to configure a VPN over the Internet.I installed the 'openvpn' package, generated the key file, transfered it by a secure way to the client, and setted up the configuration file.

So, in that configuration file I input the IP addresses of the tunneled interfaces. Both IPs are static in the tunnel.

Then, I've heard somewhere that I can assign a dynamic configuration IP for the client. I do this registering a range.

Well, when I tried to change static IP to dynamic IP (changing '192.168.0.2' to '192.168.0.0/24') in the configuration file, the OpenVPN didn't work.

Obviously I don't know what I'm doing, and I really, don't believe that simply changing the IP will make it work, but I tried.

I hope I explained my problem as well.

My configuration file:

# OpenVPN Server Configuration File
dev tun 0
ifconfig 192.168.0.1 192.168.0.2
cd /etc/openvpn
secret key_file

In client I execute the 'openvpn' without the '--daemon' parameter. Then I want that my client uses a IP in a range (192.168.0.0/24, for example), instead of a static IP (192.168.0.2).I also thought to use a DHCP server, but I'm not sure that will work.

Ubuntu :: Change File Permissions To Change Background Screen?

Feb 21, 2010

I'm new to Ubuntu Linux but have many years on windows platform. Please can someone help me with how to change the following items.

No.1 I would like to change the HORRIBLE!! YAK!! brown background color behind the word Ubuntu in the start up screen when the machine loads up (before the login). I have located the image file for this which I have found to be: /usr/share/images/xsplash/bg_2560x1600. jpg but the OS says that root is the owner and that I don't have permission to change this. So how can I change this for a color I do like.

No.2 I would also like to change the login dialogue screen style. I know this is possible but again I'm fumbling to see how I can do this. I have tried with the start up manager but every attempt fails, the settings don't take. Once again I suspect permissions are at the bottom of the problem?

No.3 Would like to have a colorful splash screen image on boot up, I've managed to remove the old one (small white 3 ring ubuntu logo on black background) but havent been able to install or replace with a new one. Its been incredibly frustrating, I'm feel sure I'm missing something simple here. Wondering if its permissions yet again?

Anyone who can offer help on any of the above, guidance or advise me would be much appreciated. Please bear in mind that I'm still very much feeling my way with Linux so keep it simple.

General :: Change Default Application For A PDF?

Jun 22, 2010

I'm running Redhat 5 Enterprise (Nautilus 2.16.2) with Gnome and am having trouble changing the default application for PDFs. No matter what I do, it seems to always come up as evince.

First I tried browsing to a PDF file using Nautilus, right clicking on a PDF file, selecting properties, open with, and then changing the radio button. However, the radio button is selecting "Document Viewer" and clicking on the other buttons doesn't do anything. The button is stuck on "Document Viewer" (I'd like to use Adobe Acrobat).

I thought I'd do it manually then. Running `gnomevfs-info file.pdf" shows code...

So now xdg-mime and gnomevfs-info are showing different default applications for this file type. I've tried updating the mime database using update-mime-database ~/.local/share/mime as well as updating my desktop database using update-desktop-database ~/.local/share but nothing seems to be working.

Changing a default application really shouldn't be this difficult. What should I try next to change my default application?

, however, shows something different

My .local/share/applications/defaults.list file, however, shows the following:

application/pdf=AdobeReader.desktop
