General :: Setting Primary Display (nvidia) Form Command Line

Apr 15, 2010

Normally I use disper to enable my external monitor, but I don't think I can force the 2nd monitor to be primary. [URL]

I've played around with nv-control-dpy included in the nvidia-control source, but I haven't figured out how to do it yet. How to get: [URL]

This is a laptop, to which I connect an external hdmi display when I get to work. dipser -e extends the desktop for me, but the laptop remains the primary desktop (holding the panels etc). nvidia-settings can set primary monitor for me, but I want to use the cli.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Setting External Monitor As Primary Display?

Aug 19, 2010

I have an ASUS 1000HE laptop running Lucid 10.04 (Desktop not netbook version) which I have connected to an external display (LCD). I don't intend to use the laptop by itself anymore therefore I have configured the display properties to turn off the laptop display and use the external display as primary. However, when the PC enters 'locked mode' or the display powers down after a defined period of time (as set in the properties) when I wake the PC and the display, it turns the laptop monitor back on .... switches the laptop screen to primary display (i.e. with the panels etc displayed on it) and extends the desktop to the external display! The only thing I can then do is go back into the configuration utility and turn the laptop monitor off again and boom, everything is fine and dandy displaying on the external display again! I don't really want to have to do this every time I come back to the PC after it has been locked nor do I want to write a script (if it can be avoided) to deal with it!

Ubuntu :: 10.04 X64 / Nvidia Quadro NVS / Dell E6500 - Cannot Display This Mode' On The Primary Monitor

May 21, 2010

I am posting this to hear if there are others with display issues on Dell E6500 laptop with the Nvidia Quadro NVS 160 driver. This problem is starting to annoy me a great deal, but I am uncertain how I should move forward. In short; I have Ubuntu 10.04 x64 installed on my Dell E6500 laptop. When using only the laptop, everything works great. The second I plug it into the docking station (the laptop lid closed) and want to use my two external monitors (Dell 2001FP) I'm in trouble. I cant see anything and what I get is a 'DVI: Cannot Display this Mode' on the primary monitor - If i try a regular VGA cable I get nothing but a black screen.

I have played around with the Nvidia config but it cant find my monitors and therefore I cant do much. I am aware of the various "hack the xorg.conf" options, but I before I do that I wanted to see if others had experienced the same thing. I had hoped that we were pasted the hack stage and that primary functions such as display would work by now.

General :: Setting Command-line Console Resolution Vbeinfo In Grub2 Does Not Report All Resolutions?

May 6, 2010

I have a Asus EEE PC 1005P which I installed a Command-line system on using the Alternate Installer CD of Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. Altough I think this is a general linux and grub2 question. I do not have (or want) the X Window System installed. I want to change my console screen resolution (not inside X) to 1024x600. But it isn't reported when I use vbeinfo inside grub:

grub> vbeinfo
VBE info: version: 3.0 OEM software rev: 1.0
total memory: 8128 KiB
List of compatible video modes:
Legend: P=Packed pixel, D=Direct color, mask/pos=R/G/B/reserved
0x112: 640 x 480 x 32 Direct, mask: 8/8/8/8 pos: 16/8/0/24

[Code]...

Does it mean I have the driver? how to set it to 1024 x 600 in grub2?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Over Sized Display Setting With NVidia

Jan 5, 2010

I am new to Ubuntu (Karmic with GNOME). I have a Samsung LED UEB7020, with an Asrock ION 330 BD player feeding to a Onkyo TXSR607, AV rec. The other day I downloaded NVidia v180.25, which was very useful, because it immediately solved an earlier teething problem of no sound. However immediately upon re-booting and ever since, the screen size is too big for the TV, meaning that I can not see the top, bottom, side and left of the display by about 2 inches either way. I have checked the NVidia resolution settings and they are correct for the TV, ie 1920 by 1080.

My etc/X11/ xorg.conf file reads as follows:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
DefaultDepth 24
EndSection

Section "Module"
Load "glx"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Default Device"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "NoLogo" "True"
EndSection

General :: Setting Primary Monitor For Natty Narwhal

Jun 8, 2011

I'm having problems setting the primary display in my Linux environment. I tried following the instructions here which seems to be working for everyone but it didn't work for me. In my /etc/gnome-settings-daemon/xrandr folder, I edited the monitors.xml file as well. It looks like this:

<monitors version="1">
<configuration>
<clone>no</clone>
<output name="LVDS">
<vendor>AUO</vendor>
<product>0x22ec</product>
<serial>0x00000000</serial>
<width>1366</width>
<height>768</height>
<rate>60</rate>
<x>1920</x>
<y>0</y>
<rotation>normal</rotation>
<reflect_x>no</reflect_x>
<reflect_y>no</reflect_y>
<primary>no</primary>
</output>
<output name="VGA-0">
<vendor>DEL</vendor>
<product>0xf022</product>
<serial>0x30395453</serial>
<width>1920</width>
<height>1080</height>
<rate>60</rate>
<x>0</x>
<y>0</y>
<rotation>normal</rotation>
<reflect_x>no</reflect_x>
<reflect_y>no</reflect_y>
<primary>no</primary>
</output>
<output name="HDMI-0">
</output>
</configuration>
</monitors>

The settings seem correct, primary is set to yes on the monitor that I want but it doesn't seem to be working as well.

Ubuntu :: Setting Visual Effects From Command Line?

Mar 12, 2011

I've been searching for how to set Preferences - Appearance - Visual Effects from command line. I'm not trying to launch the gui, I want it to set from CLI and then I want to check the GUI to confirm it did set properly... possible? I've tried gconftool which shows me what windowmanager I'm running (note both "Normal" and "Extra" say I'm running "compiz" as my windowmanager.

I've tried gconftool-2 to set it but since both are already "compiz" I don't know how to differentiate between "Normal" and "Extra". I have grep'd all of my .gconf directory and there doesn't seem to be any reference to "Normal" or "Extra" in any of my %gconf.xml files. How can I change the Visual Effect setting from CLI?

General :: Setting Up The Alternative Ad-hoc Connection In Case Primary Wireless Fails?

Jul 2, 2011

I have a device that is only accessible using wireless. By default it starts an ad-hoc wireless I can connect to. The problem is there is no internet access on the ad-hoc. So I'm connecting it to my router using the commands (its a gnu/linux):

iwconfig ath0 mode managed essid "ESSID"
ifconfig ath0 192.168.1.25 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
route add default gw 192.168.1.1

I want to add it to start up script but I don't want to get locked out of the device forever if something happens to the router (its really old). Is there any way to check if the connection failed and create an ad-hoc instead if it failed?

Ubuntu :: Configure Nvidia Driver From Command Line?

Nov 24, 2010

My daughter just broke her laptop screen. I can order another LCD - no problem, but until then she wants to use an external monitor. With Windows, this used to be no big deal, because I would hook up a monitor, hit a key combo on the keyboard, and everything would come up on the other monitor.I know how to do this using the GUI, but unfortunately, I can only see about a 2 inch strip at the top of her computer. I can see the gnome menu bar, and when I go into the Nvidia configuration, I can't make out anything below the tops of the two monitors it detects. (I was able to get it to detect both displays, but I can't see to press the "configure" button.)What I need to do, is configure the new monitor from the command line using the two inches of visible monitor that I have at the top of her broken LCD.

Software :: Redirecting APT Cache - Can Redirect Cache Of Apt To A Specified Folder Either On Command Line Or Via A Config Setting?

Jan 5, 2011

I was laughing about klackenfus's post with the ancient RH install, and then work has me dig up an old server that has been out of use for some time. It has some proprietary binaries installed that intentionally tries to hide files to prevent copying (and we are no longer paying for support or have install binaries), so a clean install is not preferable.

Basically it has been out of commission for so long, that the apt-get upgrade DL is larger than the /var partition (apt caches to /var/cache/apt/archives).

I can upgrade the bigger packages manually until I get under the threshold, but then I learn nothing new. So I'm curious if I can redirect the cache of apt to a specified folder either on the command line or via a config setting?

CentOS 5 Server :: Setting Up CUPS (command Line) On New Server?

Mar 29, 2009

I was using Red Hat 7.3 forever and decided it was time for a change. I went to Fedora 10 but it was really buggy. CentOS 5.2 is VERY stable.Here is my problem.The server is command line only -- I tend to hate GUI"S.I setup Samba no problem disabling the ports needed through the firewall and that was straightforward.CUPS is a nightmare for me since CentOS locks down the cupsd.conf and then the firewall does its thing. I allowed port 631 through the firewall but then got lost on the cupsd.conf. It's been too long and the old redhat one won't work with CentOS (not surprising since it's a VERY old system) straight-forward CUPS tutorial for a command line interface. I just need it to be:

a) do this

b) do that
