Ubuntu / Apple :: External Screen On Macbook Pro - Automatically Detect When Connect A Monitor Instead Of Going To The Nvidia Settings?

Oct 16, 2010

I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my Macbook Pro 5,5. Everything is running fine with some tweaks. Just one thing bothers me: when I tell Nvidia X Server Settings that I want to use my external screen as primary screen it doesn't put the gnome panels to the other screen, well... sometimes it does after a couple times but most of the time it doesn't.is there a way to automatically detect when I connect a monitor instead of going to the Nvidia settings? Just the way Mac OS X does?

Feb 24, 2011

I received Ubuntu 10.10 (a friend gave me the cd) Well, I installed, but I can't change the display settings: the maximum it gives is 900x600 So, I went online and looked for a fix.. I found this:

Code:
Sudo dpkg-reconfigure x server-xorg

I have typed in normal mode...but, I guess the code only works before boot up. How can I execute terminal? is there any other way to fix the display settings? I currently have Windows Xp and Ubuntu.... and I have no problem with the display settings on Xp Can I do do from recovery mode?

Because I have 2 operating systems I get a screen like this (except mine is ubuntu 10.10) If I do it from the recovery mode.... would the code works?

General :: How To Change Default Display Settings On OpenSuSe

Jan 30, 2010

I'm using OpenSUSE as a guest OS in VMware. Display settings are 1400x1050@60Hz but I want to change them for 1440x900. Using root account I go to Configure Desktop -> Display -> 1440x900. The first problem is that I can't choose 60Hz, only "Auto" or "0.0". I click Apply and the resolution changes, but if I reboot the computer or just logoff... resolution goes back to 1400x1050. My card and monitor properties: [URL]. Another strange thing is that if I click Ok on the Card and Monitor properties (changing from one resolution to another), I can choose to "Test" it, and xfine2 appears but... it ALWAYS says "1400x1050". buntu user but this time I'm planning to remain so I would like to solve this little problem, which is the following:I have a MSI Wind U100 running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS... everything works fine, both Compiz and Emerald, but when I plug in an external screen (Samsung SyncMaster 2232BW) Compiz simply gets disabled, if I try to re-enable it a pop-up shows up saying "Searching for video driver..." (or something similar) and it reverts "None" againWhen I unplug the external screen and try to re-enable Compiz it runs fine like it should, I've read elsewhere to run "compiz --replace" but it does nothingI thought something like:Plugging in an external screen requires Ubuntu to use a different display driver which doesn't support Compiz

I wonder what went wrong and where to search for it. The card is worked and it is supported by ALSA. Just some settings went wrong.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Setting External Monitor As Primary Display?

Aug 19, 2010

I have an ASUS 1000HE laptop running Lucid 10.04 (Desktop not netbook version) which I have connected to an external display (LCD). I don't intend to use the laptop by itself anymore therefore I have configured the display properties to turn off the laptop display and use the external display as primary. However, when the PC enters 'locked mode' or the display powers down after a defined period of time (as set in the properties) when I wake the PC and the display, it turns the laptop monitor back on .... switches the laptop screen to primary display (i.e. with the panels etc displayed on it) and extends the desktop to the external display! The only thing I can then do is go back into the configuration utility and turn the laptop monitor off again and boom, everything is fine and dandy displaying on the external display again! I don't really want to have to do this every time I come back to the PC after it has been locked nor do I want to write a script (if it can be avoided) to deal with it!

However, in Rhythmbox's Music Player Preferences I can't get either the Library Location to change from "Multiple locations set" or the Preferred format to "CD, Lossy mp3".

When I go into Edit>Preferences>Music, where it says "Multiple locations set", it is greyed over (I think that's the term. You can't access it.) When I go into the Preferred format, mps isn't there, but it does show up in another window when I click on edit; however, the only options I have there are 'Close' and 'Help'. The help button brings up another window and syas its loading, but stays in a loading mode forever.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Extending Display To External Monitor On Dell Inspiron 6400?

Mar 22, 2010

My brother has just installed 9.10 on his Inspiron 6400 and would like to have a dual screen setup using both the laptop display and a flatscreen attached to the VGA socket. Using the standard display options, the two displays are recognised and when the 'mirror screens' option is disabled then settings applied it works to the extent of allowing the cursor to move between the two monitors; however the monitors display nothing except a black screen and the cursor.

I've updated everything to the current version, had a look for restricted drivers (none are suggested by the GUI tool thing) and checked both displays work (both independently and as mirrored). I also had a look for an xorg.conf to poke around in but there wasn't one there.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Change Some Settings In Order To Get The Ipod To Sync W Banshee?

Nov 13, 2010

I really, really like Banshee and I really, really don't want to use gtkpod or rythmbox

Overview:I have a 5th gen video ipod which I'm trying to load onto my banshee.I was able to do this in the past, but since the upgrade to 10.04 (WHICH IS AWESOME!!) I've been S.O.L. Previously, I had to change some settings in order to get the ipod to sync w banshee, and I'm wondering if that's why I'm blocking it's native ability to sync. I'm trying to remember what changes I've made, but it's been awhile...

Breakdown: - in order to mount the iPod, I have to go to Places>Ipod and select it from the list

- I then open banshee, and the ipod is recognized in my menu

- when I go to load it, it says "loading ipod", which goes indefinitely and never ends...

- in addition, it does not recognize any music/video is on my ipod - only 11.9gb of "other"

...and that's it. I would love to load my new music

Ubuntu :: Change File Permission Settings To Force All Documents To Inherit Parent Document Settings?

Aug 21, 2011

i have a computer with 3 users on it, and a folder using samba that everyone on the network has access to. Lets say that, the folder is stored in /etc/sharedfolder. What happens is, when user1 puts a folder in it, then logs off, user 2 attempts to modify it and fails, because permission is set to 755, and they are not in the same group. (even if they were, it should still need to be 775) Anyway, my current solution is, every 5 minutes a crontab changes permission like so: chmod 777 -R /etc/sharedfiles && chown useradmin:superadmin -R /etc/sharedfiles Which works, but seeing as there is getting close to a gig in there, this is a bad solution, as it eats up the computers resources. Solutions that i think might work:

1) create a script that only changes permissions that need be changed.
2) change file permission settings to force all documents to inherit parent document settings

Debian Multimedia :: Keep Laptop Screen Lit When Plugging In HDMI Monitor

May 7, 2015

Where the script is for Gnome 3. When I plug the HDMI cable, the desktop expands to include both, but disables the backlight on the laptop monitor. I have to restart gdm3 or the laptop for the brightness control to bring it back up. First, why would it turn brightness to 0, and how do I change the default of that so it stops. I plug and unplug the HDMI regualarly while I wait for a new desktop and the laptop has to pull double duty.

I just switched from Ubuntu 14.10. It never blacked out a screen on plug in or removing. That means that there must be some way to do it, however, it used Unity and this is Gnome 3.

I installed KDE. It works as well. I will use it for now, but would like to get Gnome 3 to work. My default is gdm but I think I saw I can switch it to kdm.
