Aug 4, 2010I want to change color depth, but there's no xorg.conf file to edit... what to do? btw, shouldn't there be a simple gui for that? Like for changing resolution

Mar 11, 2010I am running Karmic Koala on a Dell Precision M90, and have some problems with my color depth, or at least that's what I believe. I have googled this problem numerous times, reading a lot about /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and have created numerous files in that location, with all manners of (probably) valid contents. I have yet to try invalid contents, in the hope that Linux is reading the file, and doing so would crash the system. This is my current xorg.conf, after many iterations:

Now, is there some other place to change this? Should I sacrifice more virgins to Cthulhu, or is Hastur the one to ask in these situations?

May 5, 2011I've been "on vacation" using gnu/linux since koala 9.10. Now after come back in, I realize that there is no xorg.conf file in ubuntu maverick 10.10. But we can create it however.
My lab is now using onboard vga, intel G41 Express, 32 MB dedicated, 782 shared memory (I have no clue about this )
I recently using compiz in 16 bit color depth, and it run pretty smooth. After enabling /etc/X11/xorg.conf and changing/adding Defaultdepth to 24. I can't use compiz again. My goal is to set compiz for 32 bit color depth

Apr 9, 2010I have installed Kubuntu 8.04.2 on a USB stick with persistence to keep any changes I make after a reboot and it works fine. I then installed the 185 Nvidia driver to give me higher resolutions and it works fine.
But each time I reboot, my updated xorg.conf is replaced with the default xorg.conf that ships with that version of Kubuntu and a backup is made of my updated xorg.conf (the correct one) which looks like xorg.conf.20100409135913. I have to put the backup xorg.conf back in place to get my Nvidia driver to work with the correct screen resolutions again. Otherwise my screen resolution is too low.
What could be causing this behavor? I'm sure it not the persistence feature of the USB stick failing since a backup is made of my original xorg.conf.
I might add more information. The xorg.conf that gets changed after a reboot says "This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using # values from the debconf database." #

Apr 13, 2011i have a Fedroa12 installed as a VM, and my problem is that i can't change the resolution higher than 800x600 .
i am trying to do that with an Xorg.conf file. here is what i did:
1. telinit 3
2. Xorg -configure (root user)
3. cp /root/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
4. inside xorg.conf i have added the following:
under the "screen" section i have added:
DefaultDepth 24 then under the "SubSection" of Depth 24, i have added:
Modes "1680x1050" "1028X768" "800x600"
but then whenever i am try to start the X, it fails with the following message: no screen found...
since i am doing it for studying only, how to configure properly the xorg.conf file ?

May 3, 2010I'm running the ubuntu based Green OS and cant get my video card properly configured. i've already gone through the forums to figure out what i need to do to get my ATI card working but my system wont let me access the xorg.conf file. i can see it using the the GOS file editor but it wont let me save the modifications. when i attempt to edit from a terminal window with su privelages it tells me that /etc/x11/xorg.conf does not exist. i've even tried booting into recovery mode and using the root instead of the sudo command. nothing i've tried will let me open the file.

But I don't have an xorg.conf file in Natty. There are several conf files in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/, but I'm not sure which one to add it too (I can't find the Device section in any of them). I guess I don't even know if the "BackingStore" option is valid in the latext Xserver.

Apr 6, 2010I've a laptop from 2001 with 512MB of RAM, and I was running Windows XP, and the laptop wasn't coping very well with the huge demands of the applications of today. It was only yesterday I installed Ubuntu alongside XP and I was surprised to see how fast everything was!
The only thing that's bugging me a bit is the screen. Some parts of the desktop shows some banding where there is meant to be a gradient, probably telling me to increase the color depth. Is there a way in Karmic Koala to change the color depth? I tried using sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf but when the editor shows up with the setting file, it's empty.
Ubuntu :: 9.10 Keeps Switching To Low Color Depth?
Apr 12, 2010Basically I've just installed Ubuntu 9.10 on an old Acer Aspire 3000 laptop. When I first did the install I observed that the screen color depth was very low so after browsing the forums I ran the latest updates and then everything was perfect.
However after a restart the color depth reverted back to low. I created an xorg.conf file and set the default depth to 24. However no luck. I then set the color depth to 16 in this file and restarted. This time it switched to the 16 bit color depth, however after a restart again it all reverted back! I tried changing the value again but it is now stuck at the low color depth again.
The driver I am using is the updated SIS driver that was provided from Ubuntu for the onboard 661 SIS video card.

Aug 29, 2011I have the nVidia driver on my desktop kernel set-up but have to change /etc/X11/xorg.conf from nVidia to nv to get a X to run in Xen. Whilst this works, is there a way to tell Xen at boot time to use nv rather than nVidia so I don't have to edit xorg.conf each time?

May 3, 2010I have a home theatre setup, where the hdmi output from my nvidia card goes to a 3 way splitter. I have found a modeline that all 3 monitors are happy with and all works well.
However, every bootup causes linux to detect a different (of the 3) monitor, a changing the video resolution etc..
How do I force linux to just use the Xorg.conf as is (without detecting new monitors every time and messing things up).

I also understand that the xorg.conf can be partial. If it is missing some sections, these will be taken from the corresponding xorg.conf.d section config file. Currently I'm using a xorg.conf generated by nvidia-settings in one of my home machines, due to a dual-monitor setup. After generating xorg.conf, the device sections are:

My question is if the Option "UseCompositeWrapper" "True" will be used or not. In other words, if a section exist in xorg.conf then it's correspondent in xorg.conf.d/ will be completely ignored *or* only the lines in xorg.conf.d/ that already exist in xorg.conf will be ignored?

Dec 29, 2010I am trying to create a media server, and I decided to try out Ubuntu, but I'm having trouble figuring this out. I have taken a suggestion that I got from another forum, but it did not work.
I'm using version 10.4 and I have to get it to at least 24 bit so I can run XBMC. I have a friend that works for red hat and he said I needed to find the restricted driver or something, but I can't find it, and he doesn't know where it might be on Ubuntu. So, does anyone know how I can change my color depth to 24bit?

Nov 15, 2010I have looked around and haven't had a lot of luck finding any information on this. I could be blind...but I'm not sure, haha.
I do a lot of remote support for my clients (I do PC repairs and training). I have recently starting suggesting to some of my basic users that they give Ubuntu a try. So far it has been very well received and they are loving it. The problem I am running into is that some of them use laptops in multiple places, and some use routers that are not easily configured. In each case it makes port forwarding a large pain in the behind to allow for remote access.
I have started using the X11vnc reverse connection and it has been working well, except for the fact that it is using high quality color depth (24bit I think?). I know when starting the connection from my end I can set the color depth, but is there any way to set the depth of a reverse connection?
Also, I understand that using just vnc over the Internet is not secure. I need to look into a decent guide to set up SSH tunneling for this. I don't suppose anyone knows of a good guide for 10.04 and 10.10?

The reason is my little netbook really burns up when i play a video.. acer aspire one and one of the reason why I installed linux over windows 7 was that I wanted my laptop to run faster ... apart from the fact that I would have installed suse anyways!!

Mar 13, 2011Problem appears every time I leave my computer for a while and my screen turns off because of inactivity. Then after screen starts again, my desktop looks like it lost color depth. I can see wallpaper that consists of big blocks of color tones instead of being smooth. Temporary I had to disable blank screen during inactivity in Power management settings. I have installed:

Sep 1, 2011I have an apple tv1 running ubuntu hardy. Due to audio video requirements I do not want to upgrade. I am trying to get 1080p24 working my TV. I ran X in verbose mode to ensure that my TV supports 1080p24 and it does. For some reason the X is not able to see the 1920x1080 @ 24Hz mode. I got the required information to add the modeline to my xorg.conf.

Ubuntu :: Monitor Display Awful (color Depth) Acer Aspire 1710?
Oct 29, 2010I've been desperate to successfully install Ubuntu on my Acer Aspire 1714SMi (old and huge, I know), but the display suffers from a greatly reduced color range, strange white haze/ fine vertical lines and virtually ilegible text. I took a screen shot as I know it's hard to describe these things, but it looks normal on the image! The Graphics Driver is nVIDIA GeForce FX Go5700 128MB. The display is perfect on XP.
I downloaded some NVidia Drivers for Linux from nVidia & from here: [URL] Can't get any of them to work, and I find it hard to believe it's so difficult to get a basic display to work. I'm about to give up.
