Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Detect TV In NVidia-settings With Xorg-config

Feb 14, 2010

I have connected my computer to my LCD-TV (HDMI-cable) to enjoy my movies and such, on a big screen. I have nVidia GeForce 7050 so in nvidia-settings I've been using the TwinView configuration which allows me to see both the monitor and the TV.

There was a bit of trouble-shooting but it worked just fine until yesterday when I changed my monitor to a new one and on the way probably messed up in nvidia-settings. I thought it would be easy to fix it but the configuration (in nvidia-settings) is stuck on "separete x-screen" and doesn't allow any changes at all. When I hit the "Detect display" nothing happens although I have the TV connected!

Maybe my xorg.config could tell somebody what is wrong. I've been messing around with the file and made lots of changes acc to different advices but I really don't understand the options and settings so I'm afraid I'll soon do something inreperable.

Debian Multimedia :: XOrg Auto-detect Failing To Detect Max Screen Resolution

May 29, 2011

I've installed Squeeze 2.6.32-5-amd64 on my laptop (Alienware M17X R3, Intel i7 Sandybridge, ATI Technologies Inc Broadway [ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6800 Series])The screen is 17", with maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080. After a default install of the operating system, the maximum resolution I can select is 1280 x 1024.My research so far has suggested that I need to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and provide xorg with the necessary resolution.

Again, by default, the xorg.conf file is not created. This leads me to believe that xorg is scanning my hardware at startup and providing me with whatever it thinks is appropriate. I tried following these instructions to generate an xorg.conf file. This process created an xorg.conf file under /root/.

When I copy this xorg.conf file to /etc/X11, I get a blank (i.e. black) screen. Deleting this file restores the default resolution 1280 x 1024.This system is dual booting with Windows 7. Under windows I am able to get a 1920 x 1080 resolution, so I know my hardware is up to it.At this stage I have yet to install the drivers for the Radeon graphics card. What are my options regarding configuring xorg to give me a higher screen resolution?

Ubuntu / Apple :: External Screen On Macbook Pro - Automatically Detect When Connect A Monitor Instead Of Going To The Nvidia Settings?

Oct 16, 2010

I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my Macbook Pro 5,5. Everything is running fine with some tweaks. Just one thing bothers me: when I tell Nvidia X Server Settings that I want to use my external screen as primary screen it doesn't put the gnome panels to the other screen, well... sometimes it does after a couple times but most of the time it doesn't.is there a way to automatically detect when I connect a monitor instead of going to the Nvidia settings? Just the way Mac OS X does?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Change Primary Display With Ati Ccc Or Xorg.config?

Apr 8, 2011

I have google'd the crap out of this and have yet to find a "solved" forum. I currently have 2 sapphire ati 5770's in xfire. I also have two monitors. My (preferred) primary display has a dvi input and my other display is hdmi. I have them both plugged into only one of the cards. For some reason it keeps setting the hdmi display as the primary. And I want them in extended view. The ATI CCC suite does not support changing the primary monitor and I have tinkered with the xconfig but I do not really know what I am doing, so I have ultimately not been successful. here is my xorg.config file.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Screen Settings And Xorg Configuration / EDID Trouble

Jan 19, 2010

A few months ago my monitor broke and began using an old one that does not have EDID.Since then i havent been able to configure my computer with a stable video configuration.I`ve tried a thousand times to edit xorg.conf and i actually got it let me use resolutions higher then 800x600, but when i reboot my computer my usuall setting 1024x768 gets switched back to a lower one - its a pain... my icons get scrambled, the gnome panels, etc.Do I need to edit any other file then xorg.conf?

And another thing I noticed today is that the gnome display manager does not recognise the higher resolution of nvidia-settings. Does it have a seperate settings file?

It said you need to update your blah blah blah.
Then it said blah blah blah doesn't exist.
Then it said it would create it for me.
Then I said REBOOT!

Now I get a black screen of death.

The only way I can get anything to happen on my monitor that comes from this computer is to boot into the Install Disk and say "TRY UBUNTU".

However, having to restart X and lose my desktop set up every time when I just want to connect my laptop to my office screen is highly inconvenient. Is this a bug or expected behaviour that I have to live with?

Ubuntu :: Xorg DPI Settings Not Being Used?

Jan 25, 2010

First off my monitor is a 720p plasma, native resolution is 1024x768 and yes it's 16:9. Video is onboard ATI 4200 (AMD780G). and I've tried the fglrx, ati, and radeon drivers. So I would like my dpi settings to reflect that the pixels are longer horizontally (that there are less of them)

So i've been changing DisplaySize, and tweaking X with other options like [Option "NoDDC" "true"] etc. Nothing seems to change the display.

So then I check xdpyinfo and it reports what I have in X and it's what i've configured.. So I try wiping out X and seeing what it picks up and what do you know, it's auto-detecting everything fine.

Code:
screen #0:
dimensions: 1024x768 pixels (160x90 millimeters)
resolution: 53x95 dots per inch

So the problem, it's not using these settings. I can change the DisplaySize to 1000 10 or 10 1000 and the display does not change, but xdpyinfo does correctly report what I've entered.
