I've searched and searched and can't find a straight answer about this. I want to sent the same signal out of the digital output and one of the analog outputs on the soundcard (Intel HDA) on my motherboard. I'm using ALSA and Pulse Audio.
View 5 RepliesI've searched high and low, and can't seem to find a solution to this. I'm running a Dell Inspiron with an HDMI output with 10.10 through the tv. I want to get HDMI sound output for VLC, but I also want S/PDIF output (to the stereo) for Musicplayer. I can test and use the HDMI in the sound preferences sound/preferences/sound, but when I try to do the same for the internal card and click 'test speakers' the sound program closes itself. When the machine was a windows machine, it had PowerDVD outputting to the TV and Mediaplayer outputting to the stereo. I'm aiming for a similar set up in Ubuntu.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm thinking of installing openSUSE-11.1 Gnome on a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo 7400M laptop because the wireless in Gnome is much more user friendly than KDE3/KDE4 in openSUSE-11.1. The idea is to give this laptop to my 84-year old mother and things need to 'just work' for her (she currently has a desktop running openSUSE-11.1 KDE3 that uses a WIRED interface to the web).
I refuse to update this laptop to openSUSE-11.2 nor 11.3 (nor other recent distributions) because every kernel update after the 2.6.27 kernel has broken the Intel i855GM graphics drivers for that laptop. There are many bug reports and none have fixed the problem for this Fujitsu-Siemens implementation of the i855GM graphics.
Hence I am looking at Gnome.
I booted the laptop to a Gnome openSUSE-11.1 liveCD and wireless is easy and works great. But audio is very very VERY bad. It is incredibly user unfriendly and it does NOT work well. I assume that is because pulse audio in openSUSE-11.1 was very immature.

So my question is, did the updates to pulse audio (in the openSUSE-11.1 update repository) fix the pulse audio situation? Are there ANY helpful views on this?
Currently my wife is using this laptop with KDE-4.4.4 (and openSUSE-11.1) so I can't just install Gnome and play with it without taking the laptop away from her for a while (note the hard drive is too small for a dual boot of KDE/Gnome).
I have Intel core 2 duo machine running Ubuntu Karmic 64-bit.
Whenever I play a mp3 on rythmbox and use the "top" command, the pulse audio is at top at 100%.
Is it trying to break my system just by running a mp3?
Is my system not able to detect two cores? or Whatever?
It's just unbearable.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI would like to redirect pulseaudio sound through ssh to a local client while seeing content through a vnc connection. Something like this:
Client: ssh -L 5901:localhost:5901 user@server.net
Client: vncviewer localhost:5901
Server: Run a web browser with flash content on the server through vnc, but sound is redirected to the client.
A good example is Facebook flash games, most flash games require flash player 10 but my local client only supports up to version 9 because of the architechture.
Why? A number of reasons:
- The local client is not powerful enough to run flash content
- The local client has an architechture that flash does not support, eg ARM, PowerPC, etc.
- Save battery power - use the resources of a server instead of the client.
Environment:
Both the client and server have pulse audio installed and working. The server does not have a physical sound card installed but the client does.
Server: Ubuntu 10.04
Client: Ubuntu 10.10

Just noticed that during calls skype uses ~30-50% cpu, + pulseaudio uses ~20%. I found some old threads on this like [URL] Or [URL]. The former suggests to purge pulse and use alsa/oss instead. The latter suggests changing mic in skype to DeviceXX and tweak the pulse.conf
There's also a launchpad bug on that with status Confirmed->invalid (due to "problem fixed in skype 2.1 beta") but looks like it's not (I am using 2.1 beta)

2. I can't try 2nd link's approach as my skype has only PulseAudio in the settings, so I can't select Device or anything else!
3. Should I try to remove pulse in favor of ALSA? I'm pretty happy with pulse otherwise that this issue, I use it to record sound out of my sound card and I'm not sure if I can do this with alsa/os.
When using Skype, the sound suddenly stops working, both ways (about 4-5 min into the communication). The message "connection failed: connection terminated" is displayed and when I click OK, Pulse Audio closes and Skype freezes. Actually, and I just realized this, the sound suddenly stops working on Firefox as well. (The Alsa plugin in Pulse Audio 'Playback' just disappears). However this occurs after a long period of use. I've just watched about 30 continuous minutes of live soccer through Espn3, before the audio stopped working. No message was displayed though, and just refreshing the page fixed it.
All this makes me think this is some type of Alsa-Pulse Audio problem. I really don't understand well what they are, although I believe Alsa is a driver and Pulse Audio a sound server? Sorry, I started using Linux very recently. I am using Ubuntu-Studio 10.04 and the rt Kernel (2.6.33-29-realtime). Sometimes I use Pulse Audio in Jack and vice-versa, using pactl load-module module-jack-sink and source respectively, but my problem seems to occur even if I unload the modules before using Skype. I believe all this started happening after I started using the rt kernel and/or the module-jack-sink/source.

ALSA and pulse are both installed, and pulse is running -- ps -A | grep pulse gives: 3627? 00:00:00 pulseaudio Yet, mplayer fails to realize this. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong that's really simple...but what?

i just upgraded from Skype 2.0.0.72 to 2.1.047. Now my microphone isn't working anymore and i cannot select it in the skype options. From now on i can only select the PulseAudio server ..
So i have read some howtos for PulseAudio. They say i should starte PulseAudio Volume Control. ok.. Now i should go to the tab "Recording". This tab doesnt exist on my pc. I upgraded to the latest version of this volume control. It still doesnt exist.
I am using OpenSuse 11.0 with KDE4.3

I hear Pulse Audio is the culprit of all the sound issues. I would like to remove it, and default to straight ALSA or whatever distros like Fedora and Ubuntu use, which has never been problematic for me.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to capture audio from a stream, NOT from the mic. This is what I'm doing: Start Audacity, push its record button, play a song. It shows that it is recording but when I play back the results, all background noise, conversation, etc, is in the recording as well as the audio from the song. If the mic is unplugged, I cannot record what I hear coming from the sound card (as in what you hear from the sound card is what you get). I got directions on how to do what I want here ( Looking (maybe) for audio mixer for use with Pulse Audio - Page 2 Posts # 4 and 5) but it's not permanent. I got the instructions in post #11 from that same page to make such a change permanent. I tried using the instructions to make the change permanent (I backed up my default.pa just in case something went wrong) and these are the changes I had made:

I have a TV card connected to my Dish box, and I would like to use it on my computer. The tv card works fine, and the audio is connected to my line in. The audio card receives the audio signal, and I can set the volume and record it without any problem, but I can't get it to redirect to an output in order to hear the sound. I have been battling with this issue since a kernel update back when 11.2 was about to come out. Back then, the alsa mixer had an option called audio loop-back, which did the trick. Since I know I ca record the audio and play it back without any problem, is there an application that can do this automatically and simultaneously?

To use my microphone I found out that I have to change my microphone settings because it's mono and the default setting is thinking it's stereo: With the Volume Controller I setup one chancel to 5 and the other to 90 and the mic is working fine. Starting Skype and using it I see that the setting is reducing the volume for the mic below 20, so nobody can hear me. I tried closing first Volume Controller and then starting Skype, no matter the volume of the mic is reduced. How do I stop this behavior?

It doesn't have nearly enough options for a proper volume control program. Pulse is much better for my needs. It or Alsa. Is it possible to remove mate-volume-control, or at least make Pulse the default volume control?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am having trouble getting the pulse audio server to find the hw0 with the common m-audio 24/96 audiophile. This card worked with previous versions of all forms of pulse but seems to bork on the HW0 function for audio out...which is a stereo analogue simple output. Audacity sees the HW functions but pulse does not! Here is a screen shot of the pulse crap. And another screen shot of what the real card at "alsamixer -c 0" sees. There is no dac or adc detected or configured with pulse. This does not make any sense as alsa and alsamixer has all the correct device controls available to any other software that uses the ice1712 driver.
I am using Fedora 12 amd 64 as a live usb on a 16 gig stick and want to be able to record and mix audio on to HD with my reliable high end m-audio pci sound card without having to mess with the pulse crap or having to install a full HD option. BTW in the pulse sound configuration gui dropdown list there is no indication of HW0 and the only devices that are available in pulse are digital outs.....go figure, so essentially I can see all the correct connections and use programs that access alsa directly eg: audacity but have no sound through the crappy and ever borked pulse audio server! Any suggestions as to how to remove all the pulse stuff that comes with most distros that use gnome? I have done this deed before with Ubuntu but do no know how to do the deed with an rpm based system. If I install a non pulse version of xmms and let it use jackd then I should have reliable sound for cd audio etc and should be able to configure VLC, Ardour and Nted well without pulse getting in on the action and screwing up my sound.
I've recently got a problem. I've installed projectM, the pulse audio version. It worked fine until a couple of days. I noticed, that the visualization isn't synchron with the music. Then I opened pulse audio to check the volume controls. The blue bars showing the intensity of the loudness don't move at all, it's all gray. ProjectM can't analyze the music and therefor cannot visualize correctly.

I have a .avi file on the hard (really on a cd-rom, but it's just the same). Being in the GUI (KDE), I do Main Menu>Run Command and then, in the dialog box, I enter 'gmplayer foo.avi'. Gmplayer starts, the picture of a small console is seen on the screen, and the audio from the movie is heard. Just as if I had inserted the CD into a stand alone dvd player but I could not see the image. I compiled and installed mplayer (with GUI support) from the slackbuilds.org sources and script for slackware 12.0, which is the slack version installed in my machine. If I open a terminal (in the GUI) and run gmplayer there I get this:

I know I could do what is suggested by gmplayer but, before that, perhaps I am simply invoking gmplayer in the wrong way. That is: there are at least to ways: using the Run Command dialog box and opening a terminal and running as a cli command.
I was wondering if there is an application for Ubuntu (FOSS or otherwise) that would allow me real time management of all of my audio inputs and outputs. Essentially I have multiple microphones attached to my computer and multiple audio outputs. What I am looking to do is to be able to assign each different input to it's own audio output. A touch screen interface is a plus for the program but not necessary.

Sound is working fine though....I wasn't using Pulse to begin with, but don't understand what happened to them....think they got deleted in going to KDE 4.4.1 rel 228 today. Should I have those libraries installed for any reason? If so, what should I install?
PS: If I go to Yast, under multimedia, I know longer see Pulse as an option...only hda_snd_intel or whatever
When I hit the Pulse Audio Device Chooser icon and then click on 'Volume Control' the volume control GUI flashes on for long enough for me to realise it has flashed on and then is gone again! If I run the chooser as root from a terminal (sudo padevchooser) I get this response when I hit the error:

Strange thing is, I have spent a lot of time working on my wife's laptop and Pulse Audio was working great (after many brain twisting, hair ripping hours of working on it) and indeed is still working despite the lack of GUI. This is all good except I want to change the output device for ringing in Skype and this is where I need to 'Move Stream ...' and can't get to it.
I'm running Kubuntu 9.10, and I like it (yay!) But I've been having issues with sound. Especially under system load I've been having an error where it says that the device analog 9xxx has failed falling back to digital, then it says almost immediately device digital 9xxx has failed falling back to analog. At this point any programs playing sound seem to retain that ability as long as I don't close them, but any programs I open have no sound. This applies to webpages and flash, as well as internal programs. I have also been having issues with video, no errors, but the video skips and freezes. Flash video occasionally crashes and any flash games that submit data (e.g. high scores) to a remote system crash my browser.
I end up having to pause the video and move it back several frames, then wait as if it had to load from ..... for a while, and it will run again for some time. My hardware is a dell inspiron e1505 on which the only things I have done are to replace a broken monitor and upgrade the ram (that is, after I broke windows too many times and converted to Linux. I don't have more error data for you, I simply haven't had the foresight to stick it into a text file yet. The error is displayed in the Notifications and Jobs button in the system tray, which is not well suited to copying and pasting, and I'm admittedly unsure as to how to find the error. I learned BASH on Sun unix at my local college and I still haven't quite learned all of how to speak ubuntu's terminal.

how to update a series of values from multiple grep commands outputs to be appended to a single row of a csv file? Work on a linux envir. The values from grep output will be numeric values.
Output sold look like:

Each of these values will be odtained from multiple grep commands piped with wc -l Is it possible to update a single row of a csv file if so pleas ehelp me with the command to be used to redirect the output into the csv file
