Ubuntu :: Use ALSA Without PULSE ?

Sep 13, 2010

I was just wondering if there was a way to use ALSA without PULSE, PULSE AUDIO is causing my Skype to crash continually.

I entered the following command into terminal- sudo apt-get remove --purge pulse-audio

Now my system has no sound at all, soundcards are detected in aplay -l, but unfortunately when i go to sound properties it just says waiting for sound system to respond.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Alsa Works - But Not Pulse

Jan 27, 2011

This is a fresh install of 10.10 (although I had the problem on 10.04 as well). I have installed MythTV on here (via apt-get, its not MythBuntu), and use the system primarily for that. Myth works great, sound in everything, no problems.

However, not much else can play sound. Firefox (.....), totem, mplayer, all nothing. Either just no sound or crash. If I can set them to use Alsa (eg: VLC), then they work.

System is an Asus P5B and on-board sound. I've also got an Nvidia GT210 and would like to use the HDMI out, but can't get anything at all to go through this. Don't know if thats related or not. Sound problems existed before adding the GT210.

One strange thing is, I can go into Preferences -> Sound -> Hardware and click "Test Speakers". Of course nothing plays. However, if I then set the onboard card to "Off", and then back to "Analogue Stereo Duplex", then click "Test Speakers", the left speaker works (right is still silent). But from then on, Pulse apps can play sound, until next reboot. Having FF open on a ..... video or something similar prevents Myth from playing sounds however.

What can I do to get sound working sanely? I don't need optical out, surround or anything. Simple stereo will be fine at this point, via either the onboard or the GT210.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Skype Disconnects From Pulse Audio ( Alsa ) On 10.04?

Feb 2, 2011

When using Skype, the sound suddenly stops working, both ways (about 4-5 min into the communication). The message "connection failed: connection terminated" is displayed and when I click OK, Pulse Audio closes and Skype freezes. Actually, and I just realized this, the sound suddenly stops working on Firefox as well. (The Alsa plugin in Pulse Audio 'Playback' just disappears). However this occurs after a long period of use. I've just watched about 30 continuous minutes of live soccer through Espn3, before the audio stopped working. No message was displayed though, and just refreshing the page fixed it.

All this makes me think this is some type of Alsa-Pulse Audio problem. I really don't understand well what they are, although I believe Alsa is a driver and Pulse Audio a sound server? Sorry, I started using Linux very recently. I am using Ubuntu-Studio 10.04 and the rt Kernel (2.6.33-29-realtime). Sometimes I use Pulse Audio in Jack and vice-versa, using pactl load-module module-jack-sink and source respectively, but my problem seems to occur even if I unload the modules before using Skype. I believe all this started happening after I started using the rt kernel and/or the module-jack-sink/source.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Get Mplayer To Recognize ALSA And / Or Pulse Audio Server

Jan 4, 2010

I'm trying to get mplayer to recognize ALSA and/or pulse audio server, preferably both. On my laptop, mplayer works fine -- mplayer -ao help lists oss, alsa, pulse, and jack, among others. But here's the output of mplayer -ao help on the computer I'm trying to set up:

[Code].....

ALSA and pulse are both installed, and pulse is running -- ps -A | grep pulse gives: 3627? 00:00:00 pulseaudio Yet, mplayer fails to realize this. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong that's really simple...but what?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Karmic + ALSA - Pulse. Playback Works, But Not Record?

Jan 20, 2010

I have upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10. Both playback and record were working using only ALSA. Karmic installed PulseAudio. Looking around the forums I found a post on how to update to the latest ALSA driver (+ lib + utils) and remove pulse to take it out of the equation. With or without pulse I cannot get record working. For work I need to use my laptop as a softphone. I've tested my headset on another machine - headphones and mic both work. Any suggestions on how to resolve this would be greatly appreciated. I have a Thinkpad T61P. Below is the output of some hopefully useful commands ...uname -aLinux moes 2.6.31-17-generic #54-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 10 16:20:31 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Doesn't Work After Switching From Pulse To ALSA

Oct 16, 2010

I have made a pretty sizable mistake. I was trying to figure out why my game was having sound issues when I was told to update my sound drivers. After a bit of searching, I came across this website. I downloaded and ran the script in the first link. Minor problem: I was using PulseAudio, not ALSA. Needless to say, the script didn't work. After the machine rebooted, I had no sound at all. I was planning on switching to ALSA anyway, so I found this thread and ran the following commands:

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Microphone - Alsa - Pulse Audio - Can't Record Anything

Apr 8, 2011

I have some microphone problems. I can't record anything. (I'm using openSUSE 11.3)

My sound card was detected almost correctly (at least the chip-set was i think). I have an Asrock motherboard (k7upgrade880, with a Southbridge: VIA 8237 | Audio: CMedia CMI9761 6 channel AC'97.

I ran these commands so far with these results - while i was following the audio troubleshooting guide (SDB:Audio troubleshooting - openSUSE

But i have NO audio playback problems - movies, games, music all play well. And the Microphone guid has a broken link

I tried to change my 50-sound.conf file (i read it on a forum, I'm new to linux troubleshooting) from this:
options snd slots=snd-via82xx to this: options snd slots=snd-via82xx position_fix=1

But that did not work either. I did not get any sound with the last line.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: AC3 Passthrough Pulse/Alsa/XBMC - Acer Aspire Revo?

Jun 16, 2010

Is it possible to install XBMC onto Ubuntu Lucid and still have passthrough audio to a connected receiver (i.e. a workaround with Pulse)? I have an Acer Aspire Revo R1600 connected via HDMI to my Onkyo reciever. I am able to get desktop sounds and play MP3 files from XBMC, but passthrough has been a bear. If I tell Pulse that my sound device is analog, for some reason I can get XBMC to pass through audio. However, I would like to keep system sounds and have the passthrough ability if it's possible. As I understand it (from about two weeks of fidgeting) this is a limitation of Pulse and it's lack of pass through support. It seems so simple. I've tried multiple different .asoundrc configirations none of which have gotten me there. I've upgraded Alsa. I'd rather not run XBMC live if I dont have to. I'd like to have the ability to have a workstation for when I need it. I've upgraded to the latest NVIDIA driver available from their website - 195.36.31.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Redirect Pulse Audio Through Ssh?

May 20, 2011

I would like to redirect pulseaudio sound through ssh to a local client while seeing content through a vnc connection. Something like this:

Client: ssh -L 5901:localhost:5901 user@server.net
Client: vncviewer localhost:5901
Server: Run a web browser with flash content on the server through vnc, but sound is redirected to the client.

A good example is Facebook flash games, most flash games require flash player 10 but my local client only supports up to version 9 because of the architechture.

Why? A number of reasons:

- The local client is not powerful enough to run flash content

- The local client has an architechture that flash does not support, eg ARM, PowerPC, etc.

- Save battery power - use the resources of a server instead of the client.

Environment:

Both the client and server have pulse audio installed and working. The server does not have a physical sound card installed but the client does.

Server: Ubuntu 10.04
Client: Ubuntu 10.10

I have tried these links so far: [URL]

Ubuntu :: Pulse Audio Volume Control GUI Flashes On Then Off?

Jun 26, 2010

When I hit the Pulse Audio Device Chooser icon and then click on 'Volume Control' the volume control GUI flashes on for long enough for me to realise it has flashed on and then is gone again! If I run the chooser as root from a terminal (sudo padevchooser) I get this response when I hit the error:

Code:

**
** ERROR:(pavucontrol.cc:339):void StreamWidget::setVolume(const pa_cvolume&, bool): assertion failed: (v.channels == channelMap.channels)

Strange thing is, I have spent a lot of time working on my wife's laptop and Pulse Audio was working great (after many brain twisting, hair ripping hours of working on it) and indeed is still working despite the lack of GUI. This is all good except I want to change the output device for ringing in Skype and this is where I need to 'Move Stream ...' and can't get to it.

Ubuntu :: Skype : No Sound With Pulse, Distorted With Esound?

Dec 5, 2010

I've been working at this issue myself for two days and still haven't come up with anything. On the default system config with Pulseaudio, Skype 2.1 has absolutely no sound, worse, if I call, or somebody calls me, the program becomes unresponsive and I end up having to either reboot or log out and in again. The only option Skype gives me in the sound settings for anything is PulseAudio Server (local) which, (obviously) is incorrect. So after a few hours of trying to sort it out with pulse, I found a workaround involving the REPLACEMENT of Pulse with esound following these commands in a terminal:

Quote:

killall pulseaudio
sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio
sudo apt-get install esound
sudo rm /etc/X11/Xsession.d/70pulseaudio

This works to an EXTENT. I have output sound, Skype makes all it's little beeps and blips and what-have-you, I can hear the other person clear as day,and I'm able to select different sound card settings now. But when I talk to someone or call echo123, my voice comes through choppy, garbled and extremely distorted.Words are run together at a super fast pace, and sometimes even quickly repeat. So then I tried yet another supposed workaround, this involving modifying .asoundrc as seen here:

Quote:
#asym fun start here. we define one pcm device called "dmixed"
pcm.dmixed {
ipc_key 1025
type dmix[code]...

After applying this, I not only changed my settings to asymed, but ALL the new settings it gave me. This time my words are run together AND I sound like some kind of deep voiced monster. Now, once and for all, to save me another two days of searching through google and topics with unanswered pleas for help, can somebody tell me what is going on here and how the hell do I fix it? T_T.I'm running Skype 2.1, (latest build) on Xubuntu 10.10 with a C-Media CMI8738 sound card. Sound works on all other applications and the microphone is solid, since I just switched from Windows and it worked before now.

P.S. just to avoid people thinking I'm stupid and asking this, yes I am positive that none of the sound settings are on mute. XD

Ubuntu :: Pulse Audio Failures Running Kubuntu 9.10

Feb 23, 2010

I'm running Kubuntu 9.10, and I like it (yay!) But I've been having issues with sound. Especially under system load I've been having an error where it says that the device analog 9xxx has failed falling back to digital, then it says almost immediately device digital 9xxx has failed falling back to analog. At this point any programs playing sound seem to retain that ability as long as I don't close them, but any programs I open have no sound. This applies to webpages and flash, as well as internal programs. I have also been having issues with video, no errors, but the video skips and freezes. Flash video occasionally crashes and any flash games that submit data (e.g. high scores) to a remote system crash my browser.

I end up having to pause the video and move it back several frames, then wait as if it had to load from ..... for a while, and it will run again for some time. My hardware is a dell inspiron e1505 on which the only things I have done are to replace a broken monitor and upgrade the ram (that is, after I broke windows too many times and converted to Linux. I don't have more error data for you, I simply haven't had the foresight to stick it into a text file yet. The error is displayed in the Notifications and Jobs button in the system tray, which is not well suited to copying and pasting, and I'm admittedly unsure as to how to find the error. I learned BASH on Sun unix at my local college and I still haven't quite learned all of how to speak ubuntu's terminal.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: High CPU Load On Skype With Pulse Audio

Jul 16, 2010

There's also a launchpad bug on that with status Confirmed->invalid (due to "problem fixed in skype 2.1 beta") but looks like it's not (I am using 2.1 beta)

1. Does any1 has this problem?
2. I can't try 2nd link's approach as my skype has only PulseAudio in the settings, so I can't select Device or anything else!
