I have a dual boot system with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 and have been been playing around with GRUB2 in order to customize the boot menu (background image, less menu item, etc). I've been successful in doing some things but my 40_custom file in my grub.d folder is missing! Here is what happens when I try to update my grub:
euri@euri-HP-6730b-FN021UT-ABA:~$ sudo update-grub
[sudo] password for euri:
Generating grub.cfg ...
I am very new user to ubuntu and new to this community, first of all if i make anything wrong in this post please forgive and guide me,
My friend have a laptop which was running in windows 7.Last week he installed Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. But after that boot menu is not showing and it is automatically booting to ubuntu.
So i pressed Shift key during boot and checked boot menu list, which is showing only linux OS ,Linux OS recovery mode and memtest86,No windows 7 option.
So I did following things.
Step1: Tried to find out the partitions using fdisk -l
2.So i tried to add a manual entry by editing the /etc/grub.d/40_custom file like below ,and changed the permission using chmod +x update-grub command
3.Run the update-grub command
But it is not updating the manual entry,The above update-grub command output showing the update-grub command not even entering into the /etc/grub.d/40_custom file because i put echo in that file in that ,and that also not coming.
I assume to make the boot menu appear I have to add an entry into 40_custom file. Not quiet sure how to make that entry, or if it has to be positioned a certain way.
I seem to be missing a secure.log or security.log file. have Ubuntu 10.04 and can't find this file. I looked in the /var/log and ran a search command to no avail. Does anyone know where this file is or is it called something else.looking for a file that logs any change to the security settings of the system.
Previously I had setup 2 Snapstream remotes using ubuntu 7.10, see the following url: [URL] The issue I'm having is a file no longer exists (/etc/modprobe.d/aliases). This file allowed for the id setup for each remote. I searched for the file but could not find it. Can someone lead me to it or another file that will serve the same purpose?

I'm trying to use a bibtex style file from the texlive-publishing package, but bibtex cant seem to find the .bib file even though I've tried everything from placing it in the same directory to exporting the BST to: p, li { white-space: pre-wrap; } export BSTINPUTS=/usr/share/texmf-texlive/bibtex/bib/IEEEtran/ but bibtex still cant find my file.
I downloaded a .gz file. The network was disconnected a few times during downloading. I resumed the download each time with wget -c option. However after all the downloading is over, an error occurs when I try to extract the .gz file. Is there any way I can download only the missing part of the file?
I was trying to install Ubuntu for long time and abandoned the idea a few times because of the same technical problem which seems to pop over and over again. ive been trying to install it after using an XP system or a Win 7 OP, and every time i faced the same Error again again- "wubildr.mbr file is missing". i installed it from a CD and tried the Wubi program too but both gave me the same error at the end. i have a decent PC with 2 hard drives, 1 of 500gbs and the other with 160gbs(which is used for the OP's). the goal was to install Ubuntu alone with no other operation systems in other partitions. Now i thought to use the Full Format of the Win XP which takes about half an hour or probably more and then installed the Ubuntu system, i got some different error which goes like this- "Windows rootsystem32hal.dll missing"
I'm trying to view the /etc/termcap file, but it doesn't seem to exist. Am I missing something on my install? I used the Fedora Core 14 live CD to install it to my hard disk for a dual boot configuration with Win 7.
I have a pc that double boots Ubuntu Linux and Windows 7..I 've downloaded the latest version of Ubuntu, 9.1, burned the iso and then had a clean install of Ubuntu, over the last version.. After the reboot, GRUB stopped working printing ERROR 15.SuperGrub disk did nothing, so I opened Ubuntu Live and checked my hard disk for /boot/grub/menu.lst but I couldn't find it
I downloaded Wine from [URL] and installed Wine 1.1.32 and it stated that I'm missing a file can anyone tell me what the deal is? do I need something more or ignore it?
I have got four webservers and one fileserver, all running Karmic and kernel 2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:05:01 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux.A folder on the fileserver has been exported using NFSv3 with these options: rw,async,no_subtree_check and mounted on all four webservers with these options: efaults,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,noatimeThe webservers run Apache+PHP+APC. Some php-files include other php-files from the nfs mount, and are requested by users very frequently (~ 100 times per second). Sometimes but not always if I alter an included php-file using FTP (the FTP server is ProFTPD and runs on the fileserver), the file seems missing:user@webserver1: ~ $ ls --full-time -al /path/to/included/file.phpls: cannot access /path/to/included/file.php: No such file or directoryI can repeat this command for hours, but the file keeps missing. Until I query the directory:user@webserver1: ~ $ ls --full-time -al /path/to/included/ | grep file-rwxr-xr-x 1 1002 1002 14294 2010-07-04 21:11:30.000000000 +0200 file.php
I have installed ubuntu 10.4 as a dual boot with Windows 7. I thought, because of a previous experience, that my music and pictures were ok in the windows file system because I would be able to access them. Well I can't. I don't even see the the Windows c: drive. I know its still there because I can boot windows.
So what do I need to do to make the c: volume / drive reappear.
I have installed windows 7 back to its former state in after foolishly messing around with some installation options in an Ubuntu install (this caused windows to disappear, and me to repair it). In *repairing* windows, I overwrote my grub file and the boot options for Ubuntu, so that it looks something like this:
Disk 1: Primary Partition - Windows 7 Disk 1: Secondary Partition - Windows 7 Disk 1: Secondary Partition - Free Space ( this is where I have Ubuntu installed)
How can I repair my grub file so that I can boot into my Ubuntu installation?
I'm trying to use a bibtex style file from the texlive-publishing package, but bibtex cant seem to find the .bib file even though I've tried everything from placing it in the same directory to exporting the BST to: export BSTINPUTS=/usr/share/texmf-texlive/bibtex/bib/IEEEtran/ But bibtex still cant find my file.

I used to have Windows XP Professional on my computer, then I decided to install Ubuntu but it didn't work for me it gave me really weird errors, I thought I uninstalled it, and then I installed Debian on my computer, Debian ran smoothly but when I tried to start Windows the GRUB from ubuntu appeared and when I tried to start windows again it showed and that the hal.dll was missing, I reinstalled Windows but still the same error appeared, this also affected my Debian GRUB so I had to install it again, I don't know what I should do in this case. How can I delete ubuntu's GRUB for good? I've already formatted my windows partition but it keeps using Ubuntu's GRUB.
(Running Lucid Lynx) In the Personal File Sharing Preferences it won't let me to tick the box to share public files on the network as it says the required packages are not installed on my system. The options for sharing via Bluetooth are available to me however. What packages am I missing (and how do I get hold of them)?
I am trying to reinstall ubuntu on my asus eee netbook. When I try to open ubuntu an error message appears saying that this file <windowsroot>system32hal.dll.> is corrupt or missing. How to I reinstall this file/what happened?
I am missing the File menu in many programs (Fedora 13). I found a thread that said this fixed itCode:yum remove gnome-applet-globalmenu gnome-globalmenu-common sshmenu gnome-applet-sshmenubut I did that and (I'm using audacity to test) it said that it was missing gnome-globalmenu. So I did Code:sudo yum --enablerepo=updates-testing install gnome-applet-globalmenu gnome-globalmenu-common sshmenu gnome-applet-sshmenubut now audacity is again missing the file menus.
Recently made the switch from the evil OS, now running F14, KDE desktop. I use a Logitech Marble Mouse, which has no middle button but two scroll buttons, and have been trying to configure button mapping (I think this may also be called Xorg hotplugging?) to map one of the scroll buttons as a middle button. The most helpful info I have yet found was on https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php...h_Marble_Mouse which seems to provide plenty of info on the subject--enough I should have no problem mapping the buttons the way I want. The only problem is I have no 10-evdev.conf file in my xorg.conf.d folder. I opened a console and ran ls as root for good measure, but the only file that showed up was 00-system-setup-keyboard.conf .
I have 2 10gb fiber cards on a server running red hat 5.3, eth4 and eth5. After replacing the eth4 card, it doesnt show up any ifcfg-eth4 file. I tried ifconfig -a, but it doesnt show up in modprobe.conf either, although it is listed when I do a lspci. Should I manually add it? or is there something Im missing here?
