Ubuntu Installation :: Could Not Start Windows - File Missing Or Corrupt

Mar 27, 2010

I used to have Windows XP Professional on my computer, then I decided to install Ubuntu but it didn't work for me it gave me really weird errors, I thought I uninstalled it, and then I installed Debian on my computer, Debian ran smoothly but when I tried to start Windows the GRUB from ubuntu appeared and when I tried to start windows again it showed and that the hal.dll was missing, I reinstalled Windows but still the same error appeared, this also affected my Debian GRUB so I had to install it again, I don't know what I should do in this case. How can I delete ubuntu's GRUB for good? I've already formatted my windows partition but it keeps using Ubuntu's GRUB.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Booting With Windows 7 - A WBM Screen Says The File: Ubuntuwinbootwubildr.mbr Is Missing Or Corrupt?

May 8, 2011

First off I must state that I am basically completely foreign to linux. I have 2 hard drives, one with windows 7 and storage partitions, and the other with my linux partition, linux swap, and unpartitioned space.I initially partitioned my drives with Disk Management in Windows 7. I created an NTFS partition on sda and installed Ubuntu from within Windows (a Wubi install I suppose). I originally intended to install by booting from the iso I burned onto a CD,but the installer was failing to load (fonts would change and it would error message). LiveCD was failing to load too in the same fashion. After hitting alt and tweaking the F6 settings, LiveCD successfully loaded (my very first taste of Ubuntu, albeit somewhat bland). I then decided to reinstall Ubuntu with proper linux partitions from within LiveCD. Now when I select Ubuntu in the Windows Boot Manager, a WBM screen says the file:

ubuntuwinbootwubildr.mbr is missing or corrupt. I do not know if this file is the problem or merely a symptom of it Below I have copied my Boot Summary (my apologies for the length and extra partitions):

Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010

============================= Boot Info Summary: ==============================

=> No boot loader is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda[code]....

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing Windows XP Dualboot - Error Along The Lines Of A Missing/corrupt Hal.dll

Jun 30, 2010

So I have a single hard drive with two partitions, and I am trying to install a dual boot of Windows XP and Ubuntu. However, I am having an issue installing the Windows XP component.

I keep getting an error along the lines of a missing/corrupt hal.dll after the first restart in the install. This has happened every time I tried to install windows XP, from several different discs, all of which I have confirmed to work on another computer.

I have tried several things for fixing this, from repairing the MBR and boot.ini to replacing hal.dll from hal.dl_, and nothing works. However, Ubuntu 10.04 installs and boots properly.

What I can do to get Windows to install properly?

General :: Boot Loader Failure - Windows Could Not Start Because The Following File Is Missing

Oct 18, 2010

I have a system with 2 hard drives. One drive (D) is my Ubuntu 10.04 system and the other drive (C) is my Windows XP system.

When I boot, I get BIOS then GRUB. If I choose the XP selection I am taken to a Boot Loader that now longer works. I get an error saying: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing. <windows root> system32hal.dll Please reinstall a copy of the above file.

Can I remove the boot loader and let Grub take me directly to the C:/windows? If so how?

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows File System Missing?

Jul 12, 2010

I have installed ubuntu 10.4 as a dual boot with Windows 7. I thought, because of a previous experience, that my music and pictures were ok in the windows file system because I would be able to access them. Well I can't. I don't even see the the Windows c: drive. I know its still there because I can boot windows.

So what do I need to do to make the c: volume / drive reappear.

Ubuntu :: Hal.dll Corrupt Or Missing?

Sep 21, 2010

So, onto my question. I kind of messed up my desktop computer trying to remove Ubuntu 8.10. I had installed 8.10 as a dual boot with Windows XP a few years back and now wanted to remove it mainly because of my mother, who can BARELY even turn a computer on. Plus, I can't connect to the internet anyway with Ubuntu (I need the Netzero dial up application in windows, since all I have right now is dial up).

Here's what I did. I downloaded the program "MBRFIX" so I could directly fix the mbr inside of Windows XP, since I don't have an XP recovery disc. I downloaded MBRFIX because I needed to get rid of GRUB. I fixed the mbr, and Windows XP directly booted. All was said and good, except Ubuntu still existed. I poked around on the internet and found something that said for me to use the Ubuntu Live CD and go to gpartition. It said to delete the Ubuntu partitions. So, I tried that, but it said something about unmounting something (I honestly don't remember what it said).

So, I continued following instructions. It said if you couldn't delete the partitions, to go to the terminal and type in "sudo swapoff" and then "sudo umount -a". So I did that. A bunch of stuff popped up in the terminal, mainly stuff that said "cannot unmount". I tried to delete the partitions once again, but that still failed. Finally, I just went back to Windows XP. I went to my computer, manage, and deleted the Ubuntu partitions from there. Finally, Ubuntu was gone! Of course, I wanted my 50GB space back on my XP, but I still had no clue how to go about putting that back. ........

Red Hat / Fedora :: Corrupt /share - All Files Missing And Can't Lstat?

Nov 8, 2010

Discovered today that my /share directory is missing or corrupt. All fields (permissions, ownership, inode, etc) read '?'. Will a fsck from single user mode fix this? Tried rebooting several times, etc. All other system functions see to be ok, except all the files in /usr/share are missing, the directory 'share' blinks red and obviously dovecot will not run - which is keeping our IMAP from running.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 / Vista Dual Boot - Missing Or Corrupt Info On Restart

Jun 19, 2010

This morning I attempted to 'clean' up some old files/programs from my dual mounted (Vista/10.04) laptop. All seemed ok until I tried to run Vista and I got the following:
/windows/system32/winload.exe
status Oxc000000F
missing or corrupt

I then tried to reboot into Ubuntu but it keeps trying to load windows. It looks like I have somehow lost my grub, so now I have lost Ubuntu and Vista. I tried my Vista Start Up disk and at the command prompt I entered:
Bootrec.ext /fixboot
Bootrec.exe /fixmbr
on restart it went back to the 'missing or corrupt' information. Is there some way I get get back to normal?

Ubuntu Installation :: Except For The Missing Screen At Start-up Everything Went Smooth?

Jun 3, 2011

As a refuge from CentOS (no way I will use KDE4 or gnome) I ended up with Xubuntu 11.04 x86_64 and I like it a lot.Except for the missing screen at start-up everything went smooth until I tried to install VMware workstation 7.1.4 (I have a full license). If I install with sudo sh VMware_____.bundle the installer makes it through just fine but if I try to start it all I get is a short splash of a screen and it's done. Starting it manually it runs through a bunch of things and shows a lot of gtk warnings until it gets stuck and that's it. No screen at all.

Out of desperation I installed it with sudo su - and then the sh VMware.....bundle. If I then start it still as root (su -, vmware &) it works just fine but it doesn't work as user.I tried a lot of the "fixes" I found on the VMware site and googled but unfortunately no success.

Ubuntu :: Corrupt File System - How To Recover

Jan 4, 2010

I have an Acer Aspire One running NBR 9.10. A few days ago it "went wonky", wouldn't boot and would just seem to start and then shut off before getting to the logon screen. I managed to boot from a USB stick and run check and fix in Gparted. It found a slew of errors in the file system. Unfortunately, it still won't boot, now it just hangs. I assume some of boot files were damaged.

Now I have two problems:

1. Is there a way to repair the damage? Or just wipe the disk and start over?

2. I need to get my e-mail off of the hard drive. I can mount the drive after booting from a USB stick, but the thunderbird directory is locked. Is there a way around this?

Ubuntu :: File System Of Mp3 Player Went Corrupt?

Nov 28, 2010

Yesterday, the file system of my mp3 player went corrupt. So I tried to format it to vfat, which in the past hasn't solved the problem and instead just made another corrupt partition. I have fixed it before by using dereks boot and nuke (dban) and filling it with only zeros so its ready to be repartitioned.

Now this time I tried to save some time by using dd instead of dban.
So I did dd if=/dev/zero of/dev/sdb

The process got interrupted by my system shutting down after about 15 min.

Now when I plug in my usb, it doesn't get recognized. It doesn't show up in gparted or fdisk. I looked at dmesg and all it gave was: usb 1-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5

Ubuntu Installation :: Missing Windows 7 Boot Option - Get Back?

just recently, while attempting to boot to windows 7, i happened to select the wrong boot option by mistake, that is the windows 7 recovery (something like that, cant remember it specifically, but the word 'recovery' is there). the option has been there eversince i installed ubuntu 11.04 on my system, of which i cant find the answer as to why it existed there. so once i selected it (which was by mistake), it took me into some recovery process which i abandoned as quickly. it restarted and the windows 7 option was no longer there. the windows 7 recovery option, however, is still there. How to get my windows 7 boot option back?

Ubuntu Installation :: From XP To 11.04 - Wubildr.mbr File Is Missing

Aug 22, 2011

I was trying to install Ubuntu for long time and abandoned the idea a few times because of the same technical problem which seems to pop over and over again. ive been trying to install it after using an XP system or a Win 7 OP, and every time i faced the same Error again again- "wubildr.mbr file is missing". i installed it from a CD and tried the Wubi program too but both gave me the same error at the end. i have a decent PC with 2 hard drives, 1 of 500gbs and the other with 160gbs(which is used for the OP's). the goal was to install Ubuntu alone with no other operation systems in other partitions. Now i thought to use the Full Format of the Win XP which takes about half an hour or probably more and then installed the Ubuntu system, i got some different error which goes like this- "Windows rootsystem32hal.dll missing"
