I have installed ubuntu 10.4 as a dual boot with Windows 7. I thought, because of a previous experience, that my music and pictures were ok in the windows file system because I would be able to access them. Well I can't. I don't even see the the Windows c: drive. I know its still there because I can boot windows.
So what do I need to do to make the c: volume / drive reappear.
I have a problem : " bootmgr is missing" It occurs when I plug the SATA 1 TB(data stored with windows file system).
View 1 Replies View RelatedI used to have Windows XP Professional on my computer, then I decided to install Ubuntu but it didn't work for me it gave me really weird errors, I thought I uninstalled it, and then I installed Debian on my computer, Debian ran smoothly but when I tried to start Windows the GRUB from ubuntu appeared and when I tried to start windows again it showed and that the hal.dll was missing, I reinstalled Windows but still the same error appeared, this also affected my Debian GRUB so I had to install it again, I don't know what I should do in this case. How can I delete ubuntu's GRUB for good? I've already formatted my windows partition but it keeps using Ubuntu's GRUB.
View 3 Replies View Related First off I must state that I am basically completely foreign to linux. I have 2 hard drives, one with windows 7 and storage partitions, and the other with my linux partition, linux swap, and unpartitioned space.I initially partitioned my drives with Disk Management in Windows 7. I created an NTFS partition on sda and installed Ubuntu from within Windows (a Wubi install I suppose). I originally intended to install by booting from the iso I burned onto a CD,but the installer was failing to load (fonts would change and it would error message). LiveCD was failing to load too in the same fashion. After hitting alt and tweaking the F6 settings, LiveCD successfully loaded (my very first taste of Ubuntu, albeit somewhat bland). I then decided to reinstall Ubuntu with proper linux partitions from within LiveCD. Now when I select Ubuntu in the Windows Boot Manager, a WBM screen says the file:
ubuntuwinbootwubildr.mbr is missing or corrupt. I do not know if this file is the problem or merely a symptom of it Below I have copied my Boot Summary (my apologies for the length and extra partitions):

I just completed the ubuntu 10.04 installation using the windows' installer.After the installation, the system reboot. I chose "ubuntu" from the OS selection screen.A message appeared that the system would verify the installation parameters.
Suddently, a message was shown:
"no main file system chosen. Please solve this error from the partition menu."
And it wouldn't continue!
how can I find the partition menu and set the file system for the ubuntu?? An idea would be to enter the installation cd for windows (as if I would wanted to format the pc)...wouldn't then the partition menu appear?
I'm usin Ubuntu 9.10 and installed it a couple of months ago. I was trying to figure out how to use Synaptic to fix some dependancy errors I was getting, and set it to remove a certain package. It said it had to remove other packages as well to do this, well that ended up being Gnome and a whole bunch of other stuff. Silly me.So I was alright without having Gnome and went back to writing simple c++ from this book. I wrote a program to output a range of numbers and ran it but had written it wrong, so it would have ran on for hours. So I just killed the power and tried to start the comp again.
This time after the Dell boot screen it would tell me my system battery was low and strike F1 to continue or F2 to enter setup. Hit F1 and Im told that a file wasnt found and then it goes to the Ubuntu loading screen (The logo and some dots underneath) and then a black screen. Nothing else.I figured I needed to reintall and dont have any CDs so tried to make a live CD and this time when I try to boot from USB device get a "Missing Operating System" error.Its set to boot from USB device before harddrive. Need to know what to do to install again/recover old install.

From windows 7 i select to install on same windows7 partition after installation i select ubuntu and it start up to complete the installation put i get a message: "No root file system please correct this from the partitiong"
I reinstall again on a vartual machine with windows 7 it worked ok;
I installed it with other pc with windows xp it worked ok
I installed on another labtop the same problem occured.
Ubuntu in Windows 7 (64 bits) File system installed using Wubi I got Ubuntu 10.04 LTS intalled using Wubi. That means Ubuntu resides inside Windows file / folder system. It also means Ubuntu does not have its own partition. Here is what I found out:
1) It cannot detect wireless network unlike Win 7 on this same laptop. However, when I plug in ethernet cable, it was able to detect it. Is there a fix this problem?
2) I cannot see Windows folders. How do access windows folder from Ubuntu side and vice versa?
3) I forgot to set the disk space for Ubuntu during install and I think the default is 17 GB.Would this cause me problems? If so, what do I need to do? How do I expand the disk space for Ubuntu?
I am about to get a new laptop here soon and I was planning a dual boot like I have on my current laptop (Win7 and Ubuntu), but I have something special in mind. I looked around the forum to see if there was anything like what I had or if it was even possible but I didn't see anything quite like this.I was wondering if this was even possible, and if so, would anyone be able to tell me what filesystem I should use for my windows swap partition?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora Core 13 x86-64 from the installation DVD and picked the "Software Development" installation. I notice that the Applications->System Tools menu doesn't have "File Browser" on it.
Nautilus is installed, so I can create a launcher for it. I'm merely curious whether this is a change or bug in FC 13? Or should I suspect that I myself deleted the file browser launcher accidentally? The machine is a laptop and I find the mousepad awkward to use.
Can windows read files from a home file server with an ext4 file system? or do I have to partition the drive with the server (ext4) and an ntfs partition with the files on?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a system with 2 hard drives. One drive (D) is my Ubuntu 10.04 system and the other drive (C) is my Windows XP system.
When I boot, I get BIOS then GRUB. If I choose the XP selection I am taken to a Boot Loader that now longer works. I get an error saying: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing. <windows root> system32hal.dll Please reinstall a copy of the above file.
Can I remove the boot loader and let Grub take me directly to the C:/windows? If so how?
I'm new to Linux and wanted to get experience with Ubuntu Server for my new build NAS, because just a NAS OS wouldn't be enough for me. I wanted a server so I can also setup a PDC and webserver.So currently I'm installing ubuntu server 10.04 onto my newly assembled server via usb stick(didn't build in dvd rom drive) I checked the BIOS before loading the OS onto the computer and everything is detected.
there's 1 thing that keeps bugging me. After installation i get a message that the install is complete and usb sticks and all devices should be removed to prevent it from booting the install again.However when i remove the usb stick and I reboot the server I get the following message on the screen:
missing operating system
or
can't find operating system
When I do let the usb stick in, it boots into Ubuntu Server and i can see all my configurations that I made eventhough during install I chose to install it on the HD and paid attention to it I wouldn't touch the usb stick.From here on i could configure the rest, like samba, and give my server an static ip address via the command line.Back to my problem: what can i do to make my server boot from HD without that I have the usb stick in?
I believe I have an old operating system of netbook Ubuntu and I am trying to upgrade to the latest 11 version. My netbook doesn't have a cd drive. I have tried using UNETBOOTIN with my usb drive (2GB) and have encountered problems with the install.
When I boot in it says" missin operating system". Sorry I don't have time to search I am on vacation and internet is sparse. Also i am loading unetbootin with a iso image of the latest version.

so, I shrunk my recovery in Windows 7 successfully, and booted into my Fedora 12 live cd to run Gparted, and move the partitions so that the free space could go towards fedora, I did such, and then I couldn't expand the partition to my dismay. Next, I woke up this morning, tried to boot to fedora to run SSH, grub loaded, but when I tried to boot fedora, I got the "File system check failed" error, and when I tried 7, it just went to a blank screen with a single "_" in the top left-hand corner.
I just tried to set up a computer for my sister running a 32GB XP partition and a 116GB Ubuntu partition.
Partitions are as follows:
/dev/sda1 (FAT32)
This partition is labeled "rescue" and includes an Ubuntu liveCD iso which can be booted

I just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 using the automated distro upgrade, and my resolution has been changed to 1024x768. I tried to go to System -> Preferences -> Display to see why this might be, but that entry is missing from my Preferences menu. I am using a Radeon HD 4200 video card, but I am not using any special video drivers right now. /etc/X11/xorg.conf does not exist.

View 3 Replies View RelatedFinally got Ubuntu installed on my machine and now I can not get windows to boot from GRUB.My windows partition is located at /dev/sda2 and here is my menu.lst file.When I reboot my computer GRUB will not load. It always gives me Error 21. The only way to get it to run is to turn the computer off and then back on.When selecting Windows 7 from the boot list the first time or two it will just send me back to the list after a brief blank screen then around the 3rd time I select it, it tells me NTLDR is missing.

View 9 Replies View Relatedi tried to install ubuntu on my company notebook, where already xp is installed and I have to work with on monday again ;(I have to partitions 60+60GB with XP and Data. I tried to resize the Boot one to 50 to gain some space for ubuntu. Gparted rezided and moved partition (10unallocated+50boot+60data). I guess thats when the bootloader was destroyed. Now I can not start XP anymore. JaiiXXX! But i have to.
Question now is:
-Would it help to resize again with gparted so that i have 60+60 again and can start working?
-Should i continue installing ubuntu from usb. It is recognizing all partitions correctly and asking to install in dualboot. howeber i guess, when bootloader for xp is not working now, will it work after installation of ubuntu on the 10gb or will it make things more complicated?
-My tummy says first to repair windows xp an then install ubuntu. I have no xp cd since it is company computer. will repair morde work with another xp cd? i would prefer that. i saw that there is another way b reinstalling the xp by bootloader, but it sounds to complicated to me and i am little nervous now.p.s. i recognized that now data partition is flagged with boot . dont know why but put it back to the right partition, nothing changed.

I have 11.04 installed, Gnome 2.32.0 - life has been good until I responded as normal to the update manager this morning. Upon reboot noticed my main menu, system menu and places menu are gone. Other icons and stuff like power button remain on the top toolbar but again, no menus.Googling around I found solutions that were years old and/or did not work for me (like installing XFCE - which did nothing).
View 6 Replies View Relatedjust recently, while attempting to boot to windows 7, i happened to select the wrong boot option by mistake, that is the windows 7 recovery (something like that, cant remember it specifically, but the word 'recovery' is there). the option has been there eversince i installed ubuntu 11.04 on my system, of which i cant find the answer as to why it existed there. so once i selected it (which was by mistake), it took me into some recovery process which i abandoned as quickly. it restarted and the windows 7 option was no longer there. the windows 7 recovery option, however, is still there. How to get my windows 7 boot option back?
View 9 Replies View RelatedThe problem after couple installations (10.10 --> 10.04 --> 10.10 --> 10.04-3) is that system goes to "busybox" after complaining about missing root device. I already have come to conclusion that this problem could be solved by telling the system that the root device is at sda1. However, I'm not able to start grub (by pressing "ESC") at boot before problems start. I'm able to start live-cd and I tried to install "over" the old one (same partitions without format, same username). No luck.
And in the busybox /proc/modules is empty for example. And the grub has worked with previous installations.

In *repairing* windows, I overwrote my grub file and the boot options for Ubuntu, so that it looks something like this:
Disk 1: Primary Partition - Windows 7
Disk 1: Secondary Partition - Windows 7
Disk 1: Secondary Partition - Free Space ( this is where I have Ubuntu installed)
How can I repair my grub file so that I can boot into my Ubuntu installation?
