Ubuntu Installation :: Could Not Start Windows - File Missing Or Corrupt

Mar 27, 2010

I used to have Windows XP Professional on my computer, then I decided to install Ubuntu but it didn't work for me it gave me really weird errors, I thought I uninstalled it, and then I installed Debian on my computer, Debian ran smoothly but when I tried to start Windows the GRUB from ubuntu appeared and when I tried to start windows again it showed and that the hal.dll was missing, I reinstalled Windows but still the same error appeared, this also affected my Debian GRUB so I had to install it again, I don't know what I should do in this case. How can I delete ubuntu's GRUB for good? I've already formatted my windows partition but it keeps using Ubuntu's GRUB.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing Windows XP Dualboot - Error Along The Lines Of A Missing/corrupt Hal.dll

Jun 30, 2010

So I have a single hard drive with two partitions, and I am trying to install a dual boot of Windows XP and Ubuntu. However, I am having an issue installing the Windows XP component.

I keep getting an error along the lines of a missing/corrupt hal.dll after the first restart in the install. This has happened every time I tried to install windows XP, from several different discs, all of which I have confirmed to work on another computer.

I have tried several things for fixing this, from repairing the MBR and boot.ini to replacing hal.dll from hal.dl_, and nothing works. However, Ubuntu 10.04 installs and boots properly.

What I can do to get Windows to install properly?

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Booting With Windows 7 - A WBM Screen Says The File: Ubuntuwinbootwubildr.mbr Is Missing Or Corrupt?

May 8, 2011

First off I must state that I am basically completely foreign to linux. I have 2 hard drives, one with windows 7 and storage partitions, and the other with my linux partition, linux swap, and unpartitioned space.I initially partitioned my drives with Disk Management in Windows 7. I created an NTFS partition on sda and installed Ubuntu from within Windows (a Wubi install I suppose). I originally intended to install by booting from the iso I burned onto a CD,but the installer was failing to load (fonts would change and it would error message). LiveCD was failing to load too in the same fashion. After hitting alt and tweaking the F6 settings, LiveCD successfully loaded (my very first taste of Ubuntu, albeit somewhat bland). I then decided to reinstall Ubuntu with proper linux partitions from within LiveCD. Now when I select Ubuntu in the Windows Boot Manager, a WBM screen says the file:

ubuntuwinbootwubildr.mbr is missing or corrupt. I do not know if this file is the problem or merely a symptom of it Below I have copied my Boot Summary (my apologies for the length and extra partitions):

Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010

============================= Boot Info Summary: ==============================

=> No boot loader is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda[code]....

Ubuntu Installation :: Error Message Concerning Swap Space - Partitions Missing

Jan 3, 2010

I was trying to install Ubuntu as a dual-boot on my Windows Vista laptop. The hard drive is 250 gb: Vista boot 157 gb partition; a partially-occupied 33 gb partition which was designated as swap-space; a newly partitioned and ext3 formatted 30gb for the Ubuntu installation. I believe there is also a hidden partition ~20 gb with "hidden" system info. During installation I received an error message concerning the swap space partition, which forced me out of the installation and back to the ubuntu partition manager screen. Now in Vista my 33 and 30 gb partitions are missing. Is there anyway I can get back to pre-Ubuntu state?

After several crashes during videos it seemed like a good idea to fsck root. Downloaded the latest systemrescuecd and ran it at boot. The error message was 'bad magic number, corrupt superblock' with a suggested command to try another superblock. That failed with the same message. Tried tune2fs to force fsck at boot and got the same message. The drive is less than 6 months old and the installed system is working more or less ok. The command I used was 'fsck.ext4 /dev/sdc2'. What am I doing wrong?

Ubuntu Installation :: Error Message At Step 5: No Root File System

Jun 6, 2010

I am getting an error message at step 5 of 8 in the installation process. I am using Ubuntu LiveCD. The caption of the error is 'No root file system' and the message itself says 'No root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu.' I enclose a screenshot of this. I had also problems with booting Ubuntu and Windows after installing Ubuntu to an external hard disk so I probably have to also create a new boot menu (may be it is differently called, 'grub' possibly, I am not really sure).

Ubuntu :: Hal.dll Corrupt Or Missing?

Sep 21, 2010

So, onto my question. I kind of messed up my desktop computer trying to remove Ubuntu 8.10. I had installed 8.10 as a dual boot with Windows XP a few years back and now wanted to remove it mainly because of my mother, who can BARELY even turn a computer on. Plus, I can't connect to the internet anyway with Ubuntu (I need the Netzero dial up application in windows, since all I have right now is dial up).

Here's what I did. I downloaded the program "MBRFIX" so I could directly fix the mbr inside of Windows XP, since I don't have an XP recovery disc. I downloaded MBRFIX because I needed to get rid of GRUB. I fixed the mbr, and Windows XP directly booted. All was said and good, except Ubuntu still existed. I poked around on the internet and found something that said for me to use the Ubuntu Live CD and go to gpartition. It said to delete the Ubuntu partitions. So, I tried that, but it said something about unmounting something (I honestly don't remember what it said).

So, I continued following instructions. It said if you couldn't delete the partitions, to go to the terminal and type in "sudo swapoff" and then "sudo umount -a". So I did that. A bunch of stuff popped up in the terminal, mainly stuff that said "cannot unmount". I tried to delete the partitions once again, but that still failed. Finally, I just went back to Windows XP. I went to my computer, manage, and deleted the Ubuntu partitions from there. Finally, Ubuntu was gone! Of course, I wanted my 50GB space back on my XP, but I still had no clue how to go about putting that back. ........

Fedora :: Got A Message That The Sda1 Filesystem Was Corrupt?

Jan 8, 2010

I had an interesting problem with my workstation this morning. When I booted the system I got a message that the sda1 filesystem was corrupt. I ran fsck on all the unmounted filesystems and found them to be clean. I then booted from the F12 live CD and checked the file systems again using 'Disk Utility' - everything appeared to be clean. However I still couldn't boot the system. I eventually reinstalled F12 from the Live CD.

Seems to be a bit strange as all the checks I ran showed the file system to be OK.

Ubuntu :: Help With Bin File - Error Message - Bash - /hldsupdatetool.bin - No Such File Or Directory

Jun 9, 2009

I am new to Linux and I wanted to setup a dedicated game server on my notebook.

I've installed Ubuntu 9.04. I than created a directory named /home/phlex/kfserver. I downloaded the application binary from Steam. I changed the file permission with chmod +x hldsupdatetool.bin and now the file attributes are -rwxr-xr-x.

The problem is when I try to run the binary file. If I type ./hldsupdatetool.bin I get an error message "-bash: ./hldsupdatetool.bin: No such file or directory. It seems the OS can't find the file. I've downloaded the file several times thinking it may have been corrupt but it's not. I can delete the file, I can rename it and so the file is there. Sometimes Linux can be aggravating to use.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 / Vista Dual Boot - Missing Or Corrupt Info On Restart

Jun 19, 2010

This morning I attempted to 'clean' up some old files/programs from my dual mounted (Vista/10.04) laptop. All seemed ok until I tried to run Vista and I got the following:
/windows/system32/winload.exe
status Oxc000000F
missing or corrupt

I then tried to reboot into Ubuntu but it keeps trying to load windows. It looks like I have somehow lost my grub, so now I have lost Ubuntu and Vista. I tried my Vista Start Up disk and at the command prompt I entered:
Bootrec.ext /fixboot
Bootrec.exe /fixmbr
on restart it went back to the 'missing or corrupt' information. Is there some way I get get back to normal?

Ubuntu Installation :: File Not Found At Boot When Using Live USB Error Is "Missing Operatoring System"

Jun 13, 2010

I'm usin Ubuntu 9.10 and installed it a couple of months ago. I was trying to figure out how to use Synaptic to fix some dependancy errors I was getting, and set it to remove a certain package. It said it had to remove other packages as well to do this, well that ended up being Gnome and a whole bunch of other stuff. Silly me.So I was alright without having Gnome and went back to writing simple c++ from this book. I wrote a program to output a range of numbers and ran it but had written it wrong, so it would have ran on for hours. So I just killed the power and tried to start the comp again.

This time after the Dell boot screen it would tell me my system battery was low and strike F1 to continue or F2 to enter setup. Hit F1 and Im told that a file wasnt found and then it goes to the Ubuntu loading screen (The logo and some dots underneath) and then a black screen. Nothing else.I figured I needed to reintall and dont have any CDs so tried to make a live CD and this time when I try to boot from USB device get a "Missing Operating System" error. Its set to boot from USB device before harddrive. Need to know what to do to install again/recover old install.

Fedora Installation :: Upgraded To FC10 - Video - Fatal Server Error: No Screens Found Gotta Go, X Session Getting Corrupt

Jun 13, 2009

I must say, the RPMfusion version of the Nvdia driver package work better with FC10 than they did under FC9 for me, which is to say: they work at all. Still get corrupted output after a few hours of work, but I imagine that's just the underlying weakness of the Nvidia driver bubbling up. Either way, now I have other problems:

First off, the Intel driver for my onboard video setup has stopped working entirely. The attempt to bring up X on the Intel setup gets me to the KDE login screen and locks the machine up hard (poweroff required). A look at the xorg.0.log shows that the server seems to be stuck in a loop trying to determine the valid video properties for the session.

Here's my xorg.conf, BTW. I have it setup to perform different configurations depending on which DefaultServerLayout line gets uncommented (lines 4 - 6). If anybody has a better way of doing this, I'm all ears. While we're on my xorg.conf, pleas view lines 64-67 and/or 75-77. This is my quickie way of changing drivers (again, all ears) which brings us to the next problem, neither the nv or nouveau drivers work with my system. Interestingly enough, both drivers tend to fail in the same relative spot in the process, I think. Please refer to line 207 of this xorg.0.log with the nv driver or line 140 of this xorg.0.log from the nouveau setup. Either way, both sessions die with the same message: (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. Fatal server error: no screens found Gotta go, x session getting corrupt,,,

I'm trying to install ubuntu 10.10 on xp,but, after waiting around 2 hours per instalation I received a error message that says:" unbuntu installer : and error occurred: coercing to unicode: need string or buffer, none Type found. for more information see log file C:1customerlocals-1 empwubi-10.10-rev197.109. I tried on one particion make just for it then I even tried on xp on C: I even put it on a pendrive but my bios is old and do not provide for usb booting. The other thing I have to try is making a boot cd but for one reason or the other , my recorder do not want to recornized my cds- rw and right now I do not have any regular blank cds . That will be my next step. Note: Ubuntu appears installed on the the control panel "add or removed programs" but not in "all programs" list. I'm a novice on this so maybe the answer was posted but I couldn't find it. Looking ahead to try it and be part of the linux team.
