Ubuntu Servers :: File On NFS Incorrectly Reported As Missing?

Jul 4, 2010

I have got four webservers and one fileserver, all running Karmic and kernel 2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:05:01 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux.A folder on the fileserver has been exported using NFSv3 with these options: rw,async,no_subtree_check
and mounted on all four webservers with these options: efaults,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,noatimeThe webservers run Apache+PHP+APC. Some php-files include other php-files from the nfs mount, and are requested by users very frequently (~ 100 times per second). Sometimes but not always if I alter an included php-file using FTP (the FTP server is ProFTPD and runs on the fileserver), the file seems missing:user@webserver1: ~ $ ls --full-time -al /path/to/included/file.phpls: cannot access /path/to/included/file.php: No such file or directoryI can repeat this command for hours, but the file keeps missing. Until I query the directory:user@webserver1: ~ $ ls --full-time -al /path/to/included/ | grep file-rwxr-xr-x 1 1002 1002 14294 2010-07-04 21:11:30.000000000 +0200 file.php

Ubuntu :: Copied Partition Using CloneZilla -- Free Space Is Reported Incorrectly

Dec 12, 2010

I recently upgraded to a bigger hard disk. I used CloneZilla to copy my 150GB ext3 /home partition on my Ubuntu system to a shiny new 800GB ext3 /home partition. However, I've filled it up to almost 150GB, and I keep getting warnings that I have only 300MB available. It looks like the free space is being reported incorrectly. GParted recognizes the size of the partition as 800GB, and Nautilus reports the same when I boot from a live CD. I've tried using tune2fs to remove the reserved blocks and e2fsck -f to fix any errors, but nothing's changed.

After the setup of my nameservers, domains. I checked that the domains are resolving good to the mentioned IP addresses which I mentioned in the zone files but when I am checking the domains on it is showing "Missing nameservers reported by parent" error. I don't know why it is reporting me this error. For example I checked one of my domains spurstone.com & I got the above mentioned error. Although whois database is giving correct results with nameservers NS1.INDEPENDENTADVISORONLINE.COM & NS2.INDEPENDENTADVISORONLINE.COM

Ubuntu Servers :: Raid Array Incorrectly Assembled On Boot

Feb 20, 2011

I've got a couple of new hard disks that I have partitioned (3 partitions per disk) and set up in a mirrored software raid array using mdadm. They've synced, I've put file systems on them (1 x ext4, 2 x luks + ext4) and I can mount them. I've checked the partitions using fdisk. I've checked the filesystems using fsck. So far so good. Next step is that I'd like mdadm to automatically assemble them on boot. (Not bothered about mounting and crypttabing yet.)

I've used sudo /usr/share/mdadm/mkconf to generate a new mdadm.conf with the appropriate UUIDs for the new partitions. I've checked that this matches the output of sudo mdadm --detail --scan

The new lines in this file are:

ARRAY /dev/md9 level=raid1 num-devices=2 UUID=470fb8a6:45561fe0:ebda4a02:9ba7a1ed
ARRAY /dev/md10 level=raid1 num-devices=2 UUID=f351fbba:c704a4b2:ebda4a02:9ba7a1ed
ARRAY /dev/md8 level=raid1 num-devices=2 UUID=c6ccec17:2274588e:ebda4a02:9ba7a1ed

To check that the mdadm.conf is fine I have stopped the new arrays:

Ubuntu Servers :: Port 21 Reported Open By Nmap And Netcat, But Blocked By Iptables?

Oct 11, 2010

Strange issue here when trying to verify firewall on Server 8.04. No ftp service running at all on server, but both nmap and netcat report port 21 as being open, even though it isn't.I am 100% sure that port 21 is not actually accessible and iptables rules are fine. Trying to connect to the port fails, yet nmap and netcat seem to report a "false positive"?Have also checked on a number of other servers I'm running, and this "false positive" seems to apply to all of them.

General :: User Not In The Sudoers File - This Incident Will Be Reported

Mar 12, 2010

I need to install a package. For that I need root access. However the system says that I am not in sudoers file. When trying to edit one, it complains alike! How I am supposed to add myself to the sudoers file if I don't have the right to edit one? I have installed this system and only administrator. What can I do?

Edit: I have tried visudo already. It requires me to be in sudoers in the first place.

amarzaya@linux-debian-gnu:/$ sudo /usr/sbin/visudo

We trust you have received the usual lecture from the local System Administrator. It usually boils down to these three things:

#1) Respect the privacy of others.
#2) Think before you type.
#3) With great power comes great responsibility.

[sudo] password for amarzaya:
amarzaya is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.

Ubuntu :: Incorrect File System Space Reported By System Monitor?

Apr 3, 2011

In System Monitor, on the File Systems tab, the "Total", "Available" and "Used" columns don't seem to add up, and the "Used" percentage doesn't seem correct either.

My config:
/dev/sda1 = 80 GB SSD drive, / partition.
/dev/sdb1 = 50 GB FAT32 partition of an external 500 GB USB hard disk.
/dev/sdb2 = remainder of the 500 GB USB hard disk encrypted using luks.

Screenshot: The /dev/sda1 figures don't really add up well, but they're close at least (how you get "50% Used" from any of those figures I don't know!).

However, for /dev/sdb2, they're miles off:
"Free" = 146.2 GiB
"Total" = 409.7 GiB
"Available" = 125.4 GiB
"Used" = 263.5 GiB

I got Gparted to make a 5gb swap, and the rest for 10.04, all is fine, rebooted to 10.04, updated grub, it removed the entry for 10.10, but reports that my hd is only 140gb, and sda2 is a 5gb swap. What gives? Where's my disc space?

Ubuntu :: Disk Free Incorrectly Reporting?

Jan 24, 2010

I have an computer that mounts an external hard drive for backups. The Computer hard drive is about 110 GB; the external drive is 120 GB.

When I do a df -h it tells me there is 97% in use.

Checking the computer harddrive I am using about 52.8 GB (of the 110 GB) 501,579 items, totalling 52.8 GB (some contents unreadable)

The external drive is using roughly 49GB of the 120 GB available.

Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/xanadu-root
114536088 104995108 3768692 97% /
udev 1030572 328 1030244 1% /dev

It seems like the total % is a reflect of total space consumed calculated off of ONE of the hard drives.

Ubuntu :: Firefox Incorrectly Displaying Some Characters?

Jun 23, 2010

I've been seeing things like this in Firefox since installing:

Franais
Espaol

where the is a special/accented character. I've also been seeing the in places that seem likely to have some kind of quote mark, probably curved quotes. I can see straight single and double quotes. To correct this, I've tried changing the display font and the character encoding. I've also looked at the Mozilla Add-On site to see if I could find a plug-in to fix it, to no avail.

What should I try now? Currently I'm using Liberation Sans with UTF-8. I'm a native English speaker so I need a western encoding (I think), but I'd still like other characters to display properly.

when I right click a folder and select "Search For File in Active Folder, it brings up the search tool, but the folder setting is always my home folder--not the active folder. Of course I can change the folder to be searched, but the point was to search in the active folder. I got this Search For File in Active Folder function from an Internet site that I don't remember. Ubuntu Installation :: Adding SSH Users - Permissions Set Incorrectly?

Jun 14, 2010

I was just trying to add new ssh users for tonight session and really messed up badly. I first installed package ibsh (iron-bars shell). I didn't know how to use it so I just went to a new user account and added ibsh at the end of his .profile. (I wrote

Code:
sudo gedit /home/username/.profile
which I suspect is the problem, I should have written
Code:
gksu gedit /home/username/.profile
??)

Well graphical logging became impossible in my own account until I did the following in my own account:

Code:
chmod 777 .profile
chmod 777 .ICEauthority

But desktop is still empty. I have restarted the system. I cannot use Firefox (it works without output for 10 sec and then dies). Chromium says something like "Problems due to not being able to update profile" but works. (I cannot see any files on desktop. But if I do places > desktop I can see them.) All the mentioned files had -------- for permissions so I did:

Code:
chmod 777 ~/Desktop/*

How to get my system back to normal. I think I got botched up permissions. If I create new user accounts, I get several error messages in these accounts.

Ubuntu :: Ext3 Partition Recognized Incorrectly As Silicon_medley_raid_member?

Mar 21, 2011

I have a very strange issue. I have a desktop Ubuntu 10.04 system that has worked just fine for months. Now suddenly grub won't find the root partition which is an ext3 partition (/dev/sda2).The strange thing about this -- I can boot with the install CD and can mount it just fine when using mount -t ext3. If I don't supply the "ext3" type however it identifies the type as "silicon_medley_raid_member" and can't mount it. If I go into the Ubuntu 10.04 Admin>Disk Utilty -- it too identifies the type of the partition as "silicon_medley_raid_member" not ext3. Same with blkid -p. With that I get:

/dev/sda2: VERSION="42758.8269" TYPE="silicon_medley_raid_member" USAGE="raid"I have other ext3 partitions that are recognized OK. When I mount the strange partition forcing ext3 -- it too seems ok. I ran fsck.ext3 on it -- with -f - and no errors were found. I backed up the partition with tar -- again -- no errors archiving. I've even tried zeroing the first 1024 bytes of the partition -- that had no effect on this issue. So what is going on with this. Any ideas? Any ideas how to fix this issue? What am I missing?

I know there are tons of applications out there that will sync your music to your iPod however I want to still be able to use itunesu and some other features in iTunes. My plan is to run a *nix os but have xp running in virtual box for iTunes. Has anyone else done this and if you have is it a huge pain? Is there a better way to go about what I'm trying to do? I have tried to get the newer iTunes installers to work with wine but I haven't gotten it to work yet. I get errors and the errors are reported bugs on winehq.

Once I went on an uninstalling frenzy my problem was fixed, but I had to know if it was from a program I installed or the live cd I used so I tried it again and sure enough, within 5 minutes my computer was unresponsive. I was using usb flash drives for my live cd and this was on a different flash drive than the first. Just thought it should be known, and I'm not doing it again once I fix my less than a week old computer from this again.
