Ubuntu :: Lucid On Samsung NB30 - Slow Noisy Disk Access

May 2, 2010

I have installed Kubuntu Lucid on my Samsung NB30 netbook. Got everything working, but the disk access seems extremely slow and noisy. Whenever larger files are being processed (software installation), the disk makes a kind of rattling sound - looks like the head is moving back and forth between two or more locations. The disk seems o.k. so far - no io errors under Linux and Windows XP boots without problems.

Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid On Samsung NB30 - No Wireless?

Apr 30, 2010

I installed Lucid on my Samsung NB30 netbook. The problem is the wireless. I managed to get it switched on by using the "easy-slow-down-manager" [URL].. It loads the r8192_pci module, but it does not work. listing the network hardware comes up with: *-network DISABLED I tried to install the windows driver with ndiswrapper. The problem here is that although I created a blacklist-rtwireless.conf file, the system stubbornly loads r8192_pci and wireless does not work.

Ubuntu :: Minimizing Disk Access On Slow USB Flash ?

Jul 16, 2011

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 as a full install from a USB flash drive. In other words, I've installed to the flash stick just as though it were a normal hard drive. This is not a Live USB/Persistent install.

The drive is an off-the shelf 8GB Gigaware stick, and its read/write performance is pretty slow. Any time I do anything that requires disk access, it's very sluggish and tends to hang.

I'm looking for advice on things I could do to minimize the amount of disk-access made in the course of using the system, so that it will feel snappier and more responsive.

Some things I've done already:Installed 'preload', which is a daemon that monitors what programs you use frequently, and pre-loads them into RAM to reduce startup time. Mounted /tmp as a tmpfs (RAM disk) and moved my Firefox and Chrome browser caches into RAM. Set noatime for my root and home partitions.

Should I be trying to disable the filesystem journal as well? I'm less concerned with potentially burning out the flash drive with too many writes than I am with just making the system more responsive and nicer to use.

One other thing I was reading about is the so-called "Laptop Mode" that appears to be kernel settings to allow you to spin down a laptop hard drive: [url]

Obviously a flash drive doesn't spin, but it seems like some of those same techniques could be helpful here. Is there anyone who has experience running Linux in a situation with a very slow hard drive?

The computers I'm using this flash drive with all have between 2 and 8 GB of RAM, so moving more stuff into RAM is unlikely to be an issue.

Debian Multimedia :: Very Slow Samsung Camcorder Video Playback ?

Jul 31, 2011

A relative of mine who uses Debian 6.0.2 has bought a Samsung HMX-H300 Camcorder which records videos in:

1. H.264 (MPEG4 part10/AVC) format

2. High Definition Video (HD-VIDEO)

3. Standard Definition Video.

I notice that the PC requirement for the camcorder's bundled software, apart from the usual Windows XP SP2/Vista/Windows 7, lists an Intel Core Duo 1.66 minimum CPU and an NVIDIA GeForce 8500 or higher or ATI HD 2600 series or higher.

My relative has an old Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.30GHz computer which only has an AGP GeForce FX 5200 but after copying the videos from the Memory Card to /home it is just about possible to play them using Totem Movie Player and VLC but, although the audio is OK the video is painfully slow or almost stationary.

Is there a way to view the videos recorded in these formats with this hardware? Can they be converted to another format? Or should he consider buying a better computer?

Ubuntu :: USB Disk - Slow Transfer Speeds And Slow System?

Apr 17, 2011

Whenever I transfer a movie into my 16GB USB flash disk, my whole system becomes windows-like and unusable!

When i drag the file(s) into the USB disk folder, it starts out fine and pretty darn fast (25mb/sec) then slowly decreases until it's unbearably slow (3m/sec) and as a side effect my whole system starts deteriorating. I basically have to wait for the file to finish transferring before i can use my desktop again!

This has been happening with every version since Karmic (all 64bit)- I put up with it because I don't use the USB stick that much.. but lately it's been my go to source for transfering large files to/from work.

Ubuntu Servers :: Samsung Spinpoint 1tb - HD103UJ - Has A Critical Error - Hard Disk Failure - Or Not ?

Jun 30, 2010

I have 10.04 desktop basically running xbmc sabnzbd and as a file server. the loads aren't too large as it is just for my house. But i moved from a server install to the desktop because of sound issues and running xbmc at start was a bit of a pain... so bit of background done.

My problem is that after installing 10.04 i got the disk utility pop-up saying one of samsung spinpoint 1tb (HD103UJ) has a critical error... now i didn't panic (although in the next couple of months i am intending to get another drive) but in the meantime i am simply wondering if this is a false flag? i've been getting this error for over 6 months now... pretty much from the last time i formatted the disk, i wiped it and then used dd to copy over a smaller partition, after which i used gparted to grow the partition to the whole drive. could this have created a false flag?

The 184 error is the only one, here is all the data i can glean from my system, attached is a screen of the relevent info from the disk utility, and this it from smartctl:

Code:

Selective self-test flags (0x0):

After scanning selected spans, do NOT read-scan remainder of disk.

If Selective self-test is pending on power-up, resume after 0 minute delay.

Ubuntu :: Lucid Is Loading Slow

Jun 4, 2011

I multiboot my Lucid with Win7 and any other Linux Distro (I frequently keep changing these, presently using or trying Fedora Lovelock).I have noticed that the time between Grub Menu display and Ubuntu Splash screen has increased by a good number of seconds. I have set my Grub to select my default OS (Lucid lynx) after 3 seconds and which it does. But after that a black screen with blinking _ is displayed for sometime before Ubuntu loads with its splash screen.

I wonder what caused this? It was not the case before when ubuntu splash appeared almost immediately after Grub menu.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgraded From 8.04 - Lucid: Login Slow?

Sep 28, 2010

Upgraded from Hardy where all worked fast and the only annoying bug was a total freeze every so often. So I thought it would be good to go to the next LTS version and see if it works better. However it is very slow starting up. bootchart reports 2:44 min compared to 40 sec for Hardy and that is only the start-up. Then the real drag begins after you enter your password. It's been up to 30 min!!! before the system became responsive and did not have a solid HDD light.

So my question is where do I start troubleshooting. I'll include the bootchart and dmesg log. What else is needed to tackle this issue? I'm really in a tizzy here, since it's my wives laptop and she is not as patient as I am, to put it mildly. Do I need to downgrade back to Hardy

Ubuntu Installation :: Noisy Pc. + Graphic Not Working?

Jan 22, 2010

I have recently installed 9.10 on my pc. All seems ok except there is a lot of noise coming from the tower now. It sounds like one of those old dial up modems that computers used to have. It starts right after the ubuntu starts. On the first install I had vertical lines on the screen that would become more broken the busier th computer was.So I installed again selecting to use lower graphics mode before installation. The lines have gone but I can't use avant window navigator as I get an error message saying the screen hasn't been composited. It invites me to use compiz to do this but a really can't see how. Also it won't let me select visual effects in appearance preferences. The most annoying thing is the noise like an old modem is constantly trying to connect to the web.

Ubuntu :: Noisy Sound - Possibly Fan - Kubuntu 10.10

Dec 4, 2010

I'm a bit concerned about this. I've installed Kubuntu 10.10 tonight, and had tried it a week ago briefly without updates. Both times I've had this really loud sound which I'm guessing is the fan going a bit mad. Is this related to a newer kernel or something? Is it dealt with easily? This is a Toshiba Equium laptop from 2 1/2 years ago. I've got the Powersave setting on now in the hope this might stop it happening while I'm trying to read up on this and get advice.

After all the observed Linux progress since I've been using it I'd be quite annoyed if something botched in the OS kills my laptop. The computer got quite hot, even though its feet are rested on a wooden board that normally prevents this.

Ubuntu :: Mobile Broadband Slow In Lucid With Huawei E166

It used to work fine in karmic a few days ago, used to get 800kbps (from whatismy.com), now in Lucid the speed test does not even finish sometimes, but if I open the system monitor it shows about 1kbps. Sometimes is gets slightly faster and I can browser a bit more, but then the speed goes down again, to barely useable. I have also setup the modem in xp and whatismy.com speedtest shows 900+kbps constantly. I did a clean install of lucid on my compaq presario cq60 laptop. I have disabled ipv6 and installed the usb-modeswitch_1.1.2-2_i386.deb and usb-modeswitch-data_20100127-1_all.beb but it is still very slow.

Ubuntu Servers :: Lucid Slow Throughput To Windows Machines

Jun 16, 2010

Having finally got Samba shares and printer shares working on my Lucid Lynx server, I've noticed that the throughput from/to those shares is very slow to what I was used to when I had those shares on a W2K server.Having Googled this problem, I noted that there was a known issue with this in Karmic (believe Brian Wu was looking at it). However, I don't see any results in Google as to this being a problem in Lucid.

I know ipv6 can cause a problem in this regard but having issued the command:
lsmod | grep inet6
I know that ipv6 is indeed disabled on my Lucid server. Any further information on whether the error reported in Karmic still applies in Lucid, and can this be addressed in any way?

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04 Lucid Lynx Network WiFi Slow Speed

May 18, 2010

A lot of people have the problem to find themselves with Lucid Lynx 10.04 and experience massive issues when connecting to wireless - me too. As a service, here some relevant links which promise relief:

[code]...

I tried all of them, and none reliably worked. Every solution which required re-association wtih the AP helped for some time, but nothing helped for long. First, don't let yourself fool by the disable IPv6 trap - while it is "enabled" it is acutally not used by Lucid! I have a clean install of Kubuntu 10.04 on an AMD64 Laptop with Broadcom STA driver: 03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4328 802.11a/b/g/n (rev 03) However I can reliably stabilize my connection for some time either by manually disabling WiFi with the hardware switch or disabling WiFi by software means and re-activating. This brings speed at par with Kubuntu 9.10 until some time. Can anybody confirm this behaviour?

Ubuntu Installation :: Compiz Slow In Lucid Kernel - Run Normail In Karmic

Jul 30, 2010

When Lucid released, I upgrade the Karmic in my Thinkpad R61 using

Code:

One things that remains until today is that when I'm using latest kernel (right now 2.6.32-24), the compiz run very slow, make the whole desktop unusable. When compiz is killed and using metacity, the desktop is running in normal speed.

Fortunately I still had the Karmic kernel (2.6.31-20) and booting using this kernel, everything run normally.

I just wonder what cause the latest kernel make compiz become slow. Is there any leftover application that I had to uninstall (maybe it's like pulseaudio's problem above), or any missing library/application that I need to install?

Ubuntu Networking :: Lucid: Samba Causes Very Slow Shutdown (eventually By Timeout)?

Samba doesn't seem to disconnect on shutdown except by timing out, causing a loooong Lucid shutdown. (I can disconnect manually before shutdown by unmounting the Samba shares, and shutdown is then very fast.) Apparently Network Manager is somehow involved. Ubuntu Networking :: Lucid Wireless - Web Pages Consistently Slow To Load

Sep 21, 2010

Laptop: HP 6910p Wireless Card: BCM4312 NO issues with wireless in 8.10 (intrepid) - fwcutter driver. Performed clean install of 10.04 (lucid) onto a brand new hard drive (July 2010) - fwcutter driver. NO issues with wireless in 10.04 (lucid) until a few days ago, when. my laptop shutdown because the battery died and I safe-upgraded to 2.6.32-24-generic. Currently I have chronic wireless connectivity issues - slow to non-existent. Ping tests (ping -c6 google.com or ping -c6 4.2.2.1) sometimes reveal 0% loss, sometimes 100% loss, sometimes "unknown host" - within 5 minutes of each other. Regardless of ping results, web pages are consistently slow to load. Skype will also cut out from time to time as the wireless connection vacillates. I have a MacBook Pro which I am using as my (wireless and consistently well-connected) control - and from which I am currently forced to draft this note.

Ubuntu Networking :: Lucid - Accessing Samba Shares Incredibly Slow From Win7

Since "upgrading" (ha!) to lucid I have had a number of problems that I am working my way through. The latest is accessing samba shares from a Win7 PC. It takes minutes to open the requested share from the Windows 7 PC. File transfers, once the directory is accessed, can be measured in bytes. It is an absolute trickle.

AFAIK the smb.conf is unchanged and, in any case, there is no problem accessing the shares from another linux PC.

Ubuntu :: Modprobe, Framevuffer, Udevadm, And Blkid Causing Slow Bootup In Lucid?

my brother's computer is pretty slow, but was working fine with ubuntu karmic, but I decided to finally upgrade him to lucid the other day, and recently his bootups take, at worst, 10 minutes, when in karmic it took way less. It just sits on a blank screen (not even a blinking cursor)

His pc's specs are:
1.4 Ghz processor (single core)
on-board graphics (no graphics card)
two hdd's one 80GB and one 150GB (the 150GB is split into 3 partitions)
465.7MB of ram 4.1GB of swap

I've attached his bootchart and it seems that Modprobe, Framebuffer, udevadm, and blkid are taking the most time to load, but I dont really know, i'm new to linux. Also how do i disable bootchart now that iv'e used it. p.s Heres he same bootchart just in case the one attached gets shrunk by ubuntuforums [URL]..

Ubuntu :: Disk Very Slow After Going From 9.04 To 10.04 / Make It Up?

Oct 1, 2010

My disk is very slow after I installed ubuntu 10.04 over my old 9.04. Doing some tinkering helped a little code...

But it is still far too slow. On the other version, I had a custom partition setup, with the home partition with 100GB, and ext3 (and other partitions for swap, boot, root folder and space for a windows partition I never cared to install ).

This time I am using a standard Lynx setup (2 partitions, the swap and the main one with almost 250Gb, using ext4).

Some applications I develop, that use disk for some unit tests, are now very slow to work with. Is there a way to making it faster? Going back to 9.04? Waiting for 10,10? Gparting and making partitions smaller on ext3? I don't know if any of these will work.
